The great thing about smart phones is that they can be so much.

They are phones, calendars, cameras, messaging systems, emails, etc. However, because they can do so much they also use up a lot of data.

So how do you keep the data usage low?

First, do you have Facebook on your phone?

If you do then make sure that the videos are not set to Autoplay.

Under the settings there is an Autoplay option. You can select it to only play on Wifi or not play at all.

Facebook will stop downloading those videos automatically and will wait for you to select the ones

to see.

Really, all social media apps use a lot of data. Videos and photos are generally big in data size. To display it, you have to download it first. This requires data space. Try and only use these apps when you are on a wifi service.

Careful, music lovers Music streaming is a big data user. Make sure that you are only using music playing apps when you are on a wifi signal.

You can also download music to your phone so that you don’t have to keep streaming it via a service.

When you are done using an app, fully close it down.

Most phones have the ability to show you all the programs that are open and you can swipe to close them.

Do this periodically throughout the day. This will cut down on any back-

ground usages.

If you don’t need it for anything, kill the GPS locator on your phone. Keeping track of where your phone is at all times uses a great deal of data. Stopping this will help cut down on unnecessary usages.

All in the game We never think about those little games we pull out and play when we have a few minutes. But those games are using data like crazy.

Managing photo data plans is a lot easier if you just get used to connecting to every single wifi connection you come across. This way as you go, you’ll stop wasting your data.

FISHING REPORT LAKE MURRAY: Crappie: Slow. Some results reported by tightlining. Go shallower in the afternoon when the water warms up. Some can be found on deep brush around 20 feet. Use jigs or minnows very slow. Fish can be hard to find in deep water, so look at the mouths of creeks that split off from the main river in 12-15 feet.

Striper: Fair. Check down the lake in the back of the big creeks. Some schooling reported up the river. Use freelining with live bait.

Lady’s diamond cloak pin served as a button

T

his large , glittering pin contains over 40 old mine cut diamonds. Each diamond is cut in the old world style which lacks the calibration and precision of stones cut after the industrial revolution.

Resting in a silver mount atop circular holes drilled into the metal, these stones glitter from within, their beauty even more evident in candle light. The entire surface of each stone is cut to achieve maximum refraction and resulting in a circular, golf ball like shape.

The floral nature of the pin showcases the love of nature often expressed in this early period of time.Each tendril and leaf is enhanced by diamonds – each tiny branch wrapped over a central branch, offering stability for this large array of precious stones.

There are several natural ‘pigeon blood’ rubies scattered throughout which add color to an already provocative appearance.

The pin was worn on the shoulder as an anchor for a cloak or fur. It was made for use as a decorative “fastener” since buttons were only seen on undergarments until the next century.

This pin was crafted to garner attention -more than 200 years after it was made it is still an object of great beauty, desire and sophistication. It is from a home in Charleston. It has been in my possession since 1989 when I purchased it from the family of the original owner.

It’s a Dog’s Life

Dancing Duck A circus owner walked into a bar to see everyone crowded about a table watching a little show. On the table was an upsidedown pot and a duck tap dancing on it. The circus owner was so impressed that he offered to buy the duck from its owner. After some wheeling and dealing they settled for $10,000 for the duck and the pot.

Three days later the circus owner runs back to the bar in anger, “Your duck is a rip-off! I put him on the pot before a whole audience and he didn’t dance a single step!”

“Oh?” asked the duck’s former owner, “did you remember to light the candle under the pot?”

Diplomatic Dance A certain dignitary, when the band struck up at an embassy function, asked: “Beautiful lady in scarlet, will you waltz with me?”

“Certainly not,” was the reply. “First, you are drunk.

Second, it is not a waltz, but the Venezuelan National Anthem; and third, I am not a beautiful lady in scarlet, but the papal nuncio.”

Unique Breakfast A man observed a sign in the window of a restaurant that read “Unique Breakfast” so he walked in and sat down.

The waitress brought him his coffee and asked him what he wanted.

“What’s your Unique Breakfast?” he asked inquisitively.

“Baked tongue of chicken!” she proudly replied.

“Baked tongue of chicken?... baked tongue of chicken! Do you have any idea how disgusting that is? I would never even consider eating anything that came out of a chicken’s mouth!” he fumed.

Undaunted, the waitress asked, “What would you like then?”

“Just bring me some scrambled eggs,” the man replied.

Stupid Question A young new teacher was trying to prove to her students that they could do the math problems she was presenting that day.

She said, “Anyone who thinks they are stupid, please stand up.”

No one stood up. After a while, a student stood up.

She asked him, “Do you think you are stupid?”

He replied, “No, but I don’t want you to stand up there all by yourself.”

Pneumonia A man went to see his doctor because he was suffering from a miserable cold. His doctor prescribed some pills, but they didn’t help.

On his next visit the doctor gave him a shot, but that didn’t do any good, either.

On his third visit the doctor told the man to go

home and take a hot bath.

As soon as he was finished bathing he was to throw open all the windows and stand in the draft.

“But doc,” protested the patient, “if I do that, I’ll get pneumonia.”

“I know,” said his physician, “I can cure pneumonia.”

Jesus Is Watching A burglar broke into a house one night. He shone his flashlight around, looking for valuables, and when he picked up a CD player to place in his sack, a strange, disembodied voice echoed from the dark saying “Jesus is watching you.” He nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked his flashlight out and froze.

When he heard nothing more after a bit, he shook his head, clicked the light back on and began searching for more valuables. Just as he pulled the stereo out so he could disconnect the wires, clear as a bell he heard, “Jesus is watching you.” Freaked out, he shone his light around frantically, looking for the source of the voice. Finally, in the corner of the room, his flashlight beam came to rest on a parrot.

“Did you say that?” he hissed at the parrot.

“Yep,” the parrot confessed, “I’m just trying to warn you.”

The burglar relaxed.

“Warn me, huh? Who are you?”

“Moses,” replied the bird.

“Moses” the burglar laughed. “What kind of stupid people would name a parrot Moses?”

“Probably the same kind of people that would name a rotweiller Jesus,” the bird answered.

Excuses for missing work I set half the clocks in my house ahead an hour and the other half back an hour Saturday and spent 18 hours in some kind of space-time continuum

loop, reliving Sunday (right up until the explosion). I was able to exit the loop only by reversing the polarity of the power source exactly e*log(pi) clocks in the house while simultaneously rapping my dog on the snout with a rolled up Times. Accordingly, I will be in late, or early.

My stigmata’s acting up.

I can’t come in to work today because I’ll be stalking my previous boss, who fired me for not showing up for work. OK? I have a rare case of 48-hour projectile leprosy, but I know we have that deadline to meet...

PHOTO: Lake Bell, Simon Pegg in “Man Up” Photo Credit: Allstar/StudioCanal --PICKS OF THE WEEK “Bridge of Spies” (PG-13) -- Tom Hanks plays a stalwart American attorney dutifully defending a Soviet spy in this tense Cold-War drama directed by Steven Spielberg.

James B. Donovan (Hanks) is appointed to defend Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance) after Abel is caught smuggling intel in 1957. The judge, prosecutor and everyone else but Donovan sees this as a show trial leading up to an execution. Donovan fights for his client’s life and the principles of the Constitution, leading to a prisoner-swap deal under the shadow of the newly built Berlin Wall.

The film has a few bursts of deftly directed energy -Spielberg’s still got it -- but overall goes for a more moody and nostalgic tone. Hanks is understated in his performance, inhabiting the role of the Everyman who hasn’t yet lost his mind to the hysteria of the era.

“Suffragette” (PG-13) -- Maud (Carey Mulligan) lives in early 20th-century London -- and not the whimsical chipper part. She works long hours at the same industrial laundry plant that scalded her mother to death; she barely sees her own child; she lives in one of the world’s great metropolises, but she can’t even vote. Maud is drawn into the Women’s Social and Political Union, where she takes to the frontlines of women’s rights, facing a violent backlash from the status quo.

The story is based on true events, but takes dramatic liberties in combining and creating characters to serve the storytelling. Helena Bonham Carter has a nice supporting role as one of Maud’s intrepid friends, and Meryl Streep delivers a weighty cameo as feminist leader Emmeline

Pankhurst.

“Man Up” (R) -- This British romantic-comedy manages to put refreshing fun back into the formula without becoming an overt parody of the genre. Much of that is owed to its stars, Simon Pegg (“Shaun of the Dead,” “Star Trek”) and Lake Bell (check out her writing/directing/ starring debut about voice-actors, “In a World ...”). The wacky circumstances of their courtship start when Jack (Pegg) mistakes Nancy (Bell) for his blind date. Nancy, in a flash of spontaneity, overcomes her cynicism and goes along with the date, until all sorts of chemical reactions start taking place.

“Truth” (R) -- Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford star in this dramatization of a journalist-drama from our recent past. During the 2004 presidential election, “60 Minutes” veteran journalist Mary Mapes and venerated newsman Dan Rather were publicly disgraced and lost their careers after a piece that questioned George W. Bush’s military service in the Texas Air National Guard. The reporting

was based on a military memo, one that turned out to be a fraud. This film, based on Mapes’ memoirs and directed by first-timer James Vanderbilt, unpacks the conflict and looks at the scandal anew, questioning whether Rather and Mapes deserved to go down the way they did.

It has been an unexpectedly rough year for Brookland-Cayce senior Keyshawn James.

He began the 2015 football season as a 6’ 2” 220-pound linebacker and defensive end with impressive prospects awaiting.

“He was a player people were watching,” head coach Rusty Charpia said.

“But he got hurt.”

In the first game of the season, a road win versus the powerful Fairfield-Central Griffins, James showed the level of play that had college recruiters looking closely at him.

Not only did James disrupt the Griffins’ game, he had an interception.

But the Fairfield Central game was also the game that a bone in his foot was broken.

“He played hurt all year,” Charpia said.

The injury lead to James gaining weight. It was not until the end of the year that James foot began to heal.

He had a great playoff game versus Hanahan, Charpia said.

The Bearcats went to Charleston and knocked off the top-ranked and heavily-favored Hanahan High Hawks in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs.

James was all over the Hanahan offense.

But there is another question. Along with the earlyseason injury, James has

a bit of an “in-betweener” issue.

Is he a defensive lineman or a linebacker?

He is not the size of a prototypical defensive end but needs the speed to play linebacker in college. That should not prohibit him from playing at the next level.

The late-season surge by James has some colleges looking at him again. Fairmont State in West Virginia has contacted Charpia about James. Other schools showing interest are The Citadel and South Carolina State.

Charpia notes that James is a good student, and has qualified for a college scholarship.

He just needs to find the right situation.
