Never weave through a crossing gate that is down, or attempt to race or beat a train. It is easy to misjudge a train’s speed and distance from the crossing, and a train traveling at 55 miles per hour takes a mile—the length of 18 football fields— or more to come to a stop once the emergency brakes are applied.

The best way to avoid a collision with a train is to always expect a train on the tracks, and to understand and always follow the signage at railroad crossings.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are at 353.88 (full pool is 360.00), and water temperatures range from 49 at the dam to the mid-40s around Buffalo Creek to the low 40s in the river.

Most of the lake has pretty good visibility.

There have been some pretty good bags of bass weighed in recent tournaments, but veteran tournament angler Captain Doug Lown reports that with very low temperatures fish will be caught in some particular patterns.

Jerkbaits and Alabama rigs are good options with water temperatures in the 40s, and you can also catch some fish on the bottom with a shakey head. However, these are likely to be smaller keepers.

Jigging spoons are also in play right now, particularly in areas where you find bait balls in about 25-30 feet of water.

look, as these steep banks allow fish deep water access without having to go too far.

It’s worth noting that winter fish on Murray are as likely to pull out to deeper water and suspend as to get on the bottom.

In some years there is a window early in the morning in the winter when fish will still come shallow to feed, which usually lasts for about two hours.

This seems to be because at night bait will pull up shallow to feed, but once the sun comes up it will head out to deeper water. When this takes place a crankbait can be a good option.

There are also reports that some good fish have been caught on Rattle Traps.

On the striped bass front, Captain Ron Davis Jr. (843-513-0143) reports that schooling activity has dropped off with a high percentage of the very small shad that gulls feed on dead after the very cold weather in the last few weeks.

Hearty gizzard shad are resilient, though, and anglers can troll umbrella rigs with baits in the 3-4 inch range that imitate smaller gizzard shad to catch numbers of fish. 15-20 feet is a good depth range, and 1.2 to 1.6 miles per hour a

good speed to troll. For bigger fish, pulling larger herring or large gizzard shad are a good option.

The best fishing is between Macedonia and Black’s Bridge.

On the catfish front, Captain William Attaway (803-924-0857) reports that fish are still biting very well in 50 plus feet of water. He is catching a mixed bag of species drifting with cut bait.

Winter Sports Corner Lexington, River Bluff meet in Region 5-5A Top-10 clash

After getting pushed back a day due to bad weather, the Top 10 matchup between host team Lexington and archrival River Bluff took place on Jan. 18.

The third-ranked Gators bested the archrival sixthranked Wildcats 39-33 in the Region 5-5A opener.

River Bluff had an early advantage before Lexington rallied to tie the matchup at 27-27 on Walker Anderson's pinfall at 285 lbs.

Pinfall victories by Brandon Riley at 106 lbs. and John Zahm at 113 lbs. built enough of a cushion for River Bluff to get the win.

Lexington's Nick Kalmanowicz closed out the matchup with a pinfall at 120 lbs.

"I knew that (Lexington) was a little inexperienced at 106 and 113 and I felt pretty good about our chances there," River Bluff head coach Evan Moxie said. "We just had to try to keep a lead once we got back around."

The incomparable Stan Shealy: Chapin’s man for all seasons

Chapin’s Stan Shealy has worn many hats with verve and aplomb.

He served as Chapin's mayor 32 years, from 1983 to 2013.

Last month, he retired after 42 years with the S.C. Department of Transportation.

He began full time in 1975, having worked during the summers and part time while a student.

When he turned 70 last August, he figured the time was right to retire.

“Hopefully, I’ve got at least 10 good active years ahead of me,” he said. “It was just time.”

Shealy won’t be sitting idle and twiddling his thumbs.

He plans to travel, including a return visit and faith journey to Jordan and Israel. He also wants to study, take new courses, and engage in new activities.

He will continue as a partner of the online Chapin Media Group with Wendie Svoboda and Bobby Hutto.

Shealy also writes, reports and takes photos of local events, people and places.

He is Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative’s Operation Roundup Trust Board Chairman, a Chapin Ruritan board member and is active at Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church, where he teaches Sunday School.

Born and bred in Chapin, he never intended to be mayor until his father, Chapin Mayor Esthern Shealy, died in 1981. He took his duties as mayor seriously.

Among his honors are the Order of the Silver Crescent, the American Legion of S.C. Distinguished Public Service Award, the Chapin Chamber of Commerce Visionary Award and the Stanley E. Shealy Community Service Award, given annually to individuals for their service and

He had fun appearing in costumes on floats in the annual Chapin Labor Day Parades.

It started when the Rev. Dick Webber asked him to ride as “Batman” in a black Corvette he called the Batmobile.

He was such a hit that the people clamored for more every year and to their delight, it was always a surprise. He’s appeared as Mr. Rogers, Captain America and in 2013 as a Nascar driver. He continued to work for DOT. Writing is in his blood.

And the highway department has been in his life from the beginning.

His father was a Richland County maintenance foreman for DOT. He sometimes took his son to work with him.

“I was enamored with the typewriter,” he said.

“They would let me type in the office.”

He has always written stories. He attended Chapin Elementary, Chapin High School and the University of South Carolina.

After graduating from USC with a degree in journalism, he worked six years for the Greenville News, covering six counties.

He met his wife Vicki in Greenwood. She was a reporter for the Index-Journal while he was Bureau Chief in Greenwood for the Greenville News.

They competed for news with each other, married and moved to Lexington briefly before moving to Chapin in the late 1970s.

His wife was Metro Editor of the Lexington County Chronicle until she retired.

In 1975, the S.C. Highway Department included a motor vehicle division and the Highway Patrol.

Shealy's department did public relations for all the branches. Initially, his job was writing news releases and working with news media. He also wrote for and became editor of the magazine, Carolina Highways. They added a newspaper, The Connector, to his duties.

In recent years, the internet came into play at work with social media, editorial content on the web page, Facebook and Twitter.

Safety has always been DOT’s main priority, Shealy said, and having the money to do what needs to be done with the infrastructure has always

been a challenge.

While he will miss his DOT colleagues, he won’t miss the Interstate 26 traffic and Malfunction Junction every day.

He is looking forward to spending more time with his cat, Lena, his friends and family and the new chapters that lie ahead.

The second Mrs. Wilson didn’t like Colonel House one bit. From the moment she moved into the White House, Edith Wilson began conspiring against her new husband’s BFF. House’s downfall was a longtime coming. Perhaps the adage “familiarity breeds contempt” was to blame. Maybe the friendship had run its course. Gradually, friction developed between the two.

The breaking point came during negotiations over the Treaty of Versailles after World War I. The Colonel accompanied Wilson to Paris as part of the American delegation.

House had a talent for compromising; Wilson simply could not.

Struggling to devise a treaty that was agreeable to the various Allied nations, Wilson saw the Colonel’s flexibility on his cherished Fourteen Points as personal betrayal.

That created bitterness, with Edith Wilson fanning the flames.

With the treaty signed, House escorted Wilson to the train station for the first leg of the president’s return home. The two men never saw or spoke to each other again. That simply was that.

U.S. President Woodrow Wilson walks alongside his then-best friend, “Colonel” Edward House in New York. The “bromance” ended abruptly when the two men could not agree on how to craft the Treaty of Versailles after World War I.

For his part, Colonel House didn’t trash talk his former patron, publically or privately. There was no nasty memoir or bombshell tell-all interview.

It was like the relationship had never existed.

“And how will you buy her a beautiful engagement ring, such as she deserves?” asks the father.

“I will concentrate on my studies,” the young man replies, “God will provide for us.”

“And children?” asks the father. “How will you support children?”

“Don’t worry, sir, God will provide,” replies the fiancée.

The conversation proceeds like this, and each time the father questions, the young man insists that God will provide.

Later, the mother asks, “How did it go, Honey?”

The father answers, “He has no job and no plans, but the good news is he thinks I’m God.”

black pepper • 1 small yellow onion, cut in half and peeled • ½ lemon (reserve the rest for 2nd recipe) • 2 cloves garlic, peeled (reserve the rest for the 2nd recipe) • Olive oil for drizzling • 2 tablespoons poultry seasoning 1. Heat oven to 425 F. Line a rimmed sheet tray with parchment paper.

2. Pat the chicken dry with paper towels. Place chicken on sheet tray.

Sprinkle salt and pepper inside and outside of the chicken. Place the onion, half a lemon and the garlic into the cavity of the chicken. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle the poultry seasoning on the outside of the chicken and rub the mixture all over the chicken.

3. Roast chicken for 1 ½ hours, until the juices run clear and a thermometer inserted in the thickest part of the thigh reads 165 F. Remove from oven and rest for 20 minutes before carving.

Makes 4 servings.

Creamy lemon chicken pasta • 1 pound penne or ziti • 3 ounces cream cheese • ¼ cup heavy cream • 1 small clove garlic, finely chopped • 2 teaspoons grated lemon zest • 2 tablespoons lemon juice • 2 tablespoons poultry seasoning • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper • 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes • 2 cups frozen peas, thawed • 2 cups cooked, skinless, shredded chicken

1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Stir in pasta and cook according to package directions.

2. Using a small bowl, mash cream cheese, cream, garlic, lemon zest, lemon juice, poultry seasoning, ½ teaspoon of the salt and pepper and the pepper flakes together with a fork.

3. Set aside ½ cup of the pasta cooking liquid and drain pasta. Return pasta to pot and add cream cheese mixture, peas and chicken.

Stir in cooking liquid. Season with remaining salt and pepper. Makes 4 to 6 servings.

The Frontiersmen travel to Washington them. We fought them off with the help of several Citronella candles.

We visited the Yorktown Battlefield and the White House of the Confederacy. Finally we drove to a farm outside of Manassas, VA., where we set up base camp.

The next day we headed into Washington where we attended the Presidents’ Church. It is an unusual experience to go from camping in a secluded cow pasture to dressing up to walk around the nation’s capital.

We visited sites such as the Lincoln Memorial and the Smithsonian Institute.

At the Capitol building, Sen. Tim Scott took time to meet us and even do a two-minute filibuster.

ou have to want to go somewhere badly to get up at 4 a.m.

We were bound for Washington, D.C. to learn about our history and government.

But let me first tell you how and why this came to be.

The Frontiersmen, my group at Fair Play Camp School, decided we wanted a bus trip on American government and history.

Fair Play Camp School is a nonprofit, volunteer organization run by the Mennonite Church in Westminster in the mountains of far northwestern South Carolina.

Fair Play helps boys who have behavior issues change their lives in a outdoor, small group setting.

Our plan

Our first step was research for the trip and food to take with us.

We planned every item we wanted on every single meal in our nice, warm Chuck Tent.

For example, if you want ketchup on your hot dog you better remember to put it on your shopping list. Once we had three weeks worth of meals planned we made our Master Food List.

Our warehouse and commissary list had everything from our tents to our cooking spray.

We did a lot of extra work to earn money for different tours so we could have fun.

We periodically met with camp director, Daniel Hochstetler, to discuss the itinerary.

After months of hard work and research, we created a final itinerary.

Our 18-day bus trip would take us to five locations including a week in Washington, D.C. Once we bought all our food, we bagged and labeled each meal. One of my favorites was a deep dish, Dutch oven pizza.

The next two days we hustled to make sure we packed every-

thing we needed from our food to our tents into a trailer. The night before we left, we got to meet former Congressman Gresham Barrett. He was able to teach us more about how our government works.
