adorable Troll dolls that were a mainstay of toy boxes for decades now have their own hyper-colored animated adventure.

Princess Poppy (voiced by Anna Kendrick) is the life of the party with the dance-andhug obsessed Troll community until the significantly less happy-go-lucky Bergens break up the party.

Bergens are big grey-ish folks whose only source of joy is consuming the extra-happy Trolls. Poppy joins up with Branch (Justin Timberlake), the only glum and paranoid Troll, on a rescue mission full of music and positivity.

So, sure, an all-CG hyperactive toy-based movie looks like nothing by a cynical cashgrab. But there’s nothing that cynical in the runtime itself.

The movie is super-sweet with bursts of glitter and pop music, and the kind of humor where a little guy literally poops cupcakes.

He’s got what it takes.

Bryce Fields is a football player at Gray Collegiate that you are likely to see at the next level.

At 6’2” and 180 pounds, the quarterback is an exceptional football player, as well as an outstanding student.

He has been the starting quarterback for all three years that Gray Collegiate has existed. Fields led War Eagle to a winning record in Class AA Region 3 as well as a playoff berth in the 2016 season.

This year, Fields threw for close to 3,000 yards and 50 touchdowns on his way to being selected as an honorable mention on the All-Midlands team.

“Whoever gets Bryce will get a steal,” said Gray Head Coach Adam Holmes.

One of the senior leader’s better games came in a 6034 victory at Camden Military Academy. In that game the quarterback completed 21 passes of his 30 attempts.

His passes accounted for 328 yards and five touchdowns.

The standout for Gray

had familiar company on the field with him. His twin brother, Aydan Fields, played wide receiver for War Eagle.

Fields’ efforts in high school have led to some chances for him. North Greenville, Charleston Southern, and Maryville (Tenn.) are all possibilities for him to play on the college level.

Fields is also slated to take an unofficial visit to Newberry in the next week or so.

Although Maryville does not offer athletic scholarships, Fields may be able to receive a scholarship due to his dedication in the classroom. Holmes, said Fields academics are “through the roof.” He averages almost a 5.0 Grade-Point-Average. He also has earned 60 hours of college credit.

GCA is a dual-credit charter school that offers college course credit, along with high school classes.

Holmes said Fields “mentally knows the game and truly understands the offense.

He has a strong arm and can make all of the throws.”

With all of his assets, Holmes expects Fields to land an opportunity to play.

DO YOU REALLY WANT TO EAT THERE?

Local restaurants do well with DHEC ratings

Things restaurant owners most fear: • Federal health and safety inspectors, • fire marshals, and • the state Department of Health and Environmental Control.

The latter can shut a food business down on the spot.

That means owners and their employees work hard to avoid trouble with DHEC inspectors.

Local restaurants seem to be doing that well by passing their inspections with flying colors, according to a recent DHEC report.

It included grades for 37 Lexington County businesses.

Passing the test DHEC checks in with each restaurant once every quarter, depending on staff available, according to local restauranteur Ted Stambolitis.

Even with 42 years experience in the restaurant business, it's always a bit stressful, the Flight Deck owner said.

"We do our best to have everything prepared before they come in," he said.

Stambolitis, who opened The Flight Deck in Lexington 25 years ago, said. "Human nature being what it is, you might have missed something, such as a sanitation bucket not having enough (chemicals) in it, or a piece of equiment that's unknowingly broken down."

Temperatures are an incredibly important factor in DHEC inspections, from the temperature inside freezers and refrigerators to the cooking temperature of certain foods.

A broken thermometer can be costly in a review.

"We check our thermometers multiple times a day, usually every two to four hours," Stambolitis said. "And we have to document each reading."

Preventive measures To prevent critical health problems, many restaurant owners are super careful.

Lexington’s Flight Deck restaurant owner Ted Stambolitis says he takes a proactive approach.

“I make sure that there’s at least one SafeServ-certified staff member on site at all times,” he said.

SafeServ-certified staff have had special training that makes them health-code savvy about preparing for DHEC inspections.

“We usually have a few working each shift. I’m certified, all my managers are certified, and some of my waitstaff are certified. It really helps us stay ahead of things to have those knowledgeable people on hand.”

Table tops, ceilings, floors, and every other nook and cranny of a restaurant gets inspected.

The examination of the kitchen is even more comprehensive.

“It can be really tricky,” he said. “You have to be on point with everything. If you touch your face, wash your hands. If you touch a wall, wash your hands. If you hold a wet rag, wash your hands. It’s about cleanliness and reducing the threat of spreading germs.

“Everything anywhere near food has to be 100% clean, no matter what.”

Harper said the nuances that get overlooked the most by service industry workers are rules involving storage of food.

“It has to be labeled and dated,” he said. “At home, you might use half a can of something, then put it in the fridge in a sealable bag to save for later. If you do that here, you’re going to get a critical viola-

tion for it, and that costs points (during a DHEC inspection).”

Businesses are only allowed two to three critical violations before they fail, Harper explained. If a restaurant fails, they must close their doors until a DHEC official returns and finds conditions are up to code.

Flight Deck was recently inspected and received a 100% rating.

Harper said more than 300 kinds of bacteria can grow on foods.

DHEC strives to reduce them as some of these microbes can cause serious illnesses or even death.

The fastest way to get shut down, Harper said, is for DHEC to find something that can cause foodborne illnesses, such as mold or contaminated meat.

Inversely, if multiple cases of illness stem from a restaurant, DHEC reacts by closing the business’ doors until the source is found.

Once an inspection is done, Stambolitis said there’s a sense of relief.

“It’s tremendous,” he said.

“It’s not so much that they’re gone, because they’re just doing their job, but it’s a relief to know you’ve done well.

“I fully support DHEC. I think they serve an important role in our government and society.

“They make sure that you and I can eat and drink in a safe environment. DHEC has done an amazing job at meeting and exceeding national standards. The sigh of relief is that I’ve done my job right.”

Reenactors to camp at Lexington County Museum

The Lexington County Museum will hold its annual Civil War Encampment and Candlelight Tour Saturday, Jan. 28, and Sunday, Jan. 29.

The free public encampment will allow visitors to learn more about the daily lives of soldiers in the War of Southern Independence, their uniforms, equipment, and weapons.

Living historians portraying both Union and Confederate soldiers will be on hand

to explain the history of Lexington units and demonstrate daily activity in the life of a soldier.

Drill demonstrations will be performed throughout the two days.

The encampment will be open to the public during the museum’s regular hours – 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Tours of the museum’s historic buildings will be available during the museum’s opening hours at $5 for adults and $2 for children.

The museum will host a candlelight tour the evening of Saturday Jan. 28. Tours will start at 6:30 pm, 7:30 pm, and 8:30 pm.

Visitors will get a tour of the museum grounds and experience vignettes based on true events experienced by Lexington County soldiers and civilians during the war.

The cost to attend the candlelight tour is $5 for adults and free for children 12 and under.

It’s a Dog’s Life Piercing questions

Sales call

The students in my thirdgrade class were bombarding me with questions about my newly pierced ears.

“Does the hole go all the way through?”

“Yes.” “Did it hurt?”

“Just a little.”

“Did they stick a needle through your ears?”

“No, they used a special gun.”

Silence followed, and then one solemn voice called out, “How far away did they stand?”

One day a salesman stopped by a farm, knocked, and the farmer’s wife came to the door.

“Is your husband home, Ma’am?” he asked.

“Sure is. He’s over to the cow barn.” she said.

“Well, I got something to show him, Ma’am. Will I have any difficulty finding him?”

“Shouldn’t have any difficulties. He’s the one with the beard and mustache.

Brown Paper Jake

A Government Employee sits in his office and out of boredom, decides to see what’s in his old filing cabinet.

He pokes through the contents and comes across an old brass lamp.

“This will look nice on my mantelpiece,” he decides, and takes it home with him. While polishing the lamp, a genie appears and grants him three wishes.

“I wish to be on a beautiful island in the Caribbean.”

POOF! He suddenly appears on a gorgeous beach.

After overcoming his initial surprise, he states his second wish.

“I wish to be waited on hand and foot by beautiful women.”

POOF! A crowd of gorgeous women flock to him, attending his every need.

He tells the genie his third and last wish: “I wish to never have to work ever again.”

POOF! He’s back in his government office.

A sheriff walks into a saloon and shouts for everyone’s attention.

“Has anyone seen Brown Paper Jake?” he asks.

“What’s he look like?” asks one shoddy-looking cowboy.

“Well”, replies the Sheriff, “he wears a brown paper hat, a brown paper waistcoat, a brown paper shirt, brown paper boots, brown paper pants, and a brown paper jacket.”

“So what’s he wanted for?” asks the same cowboy.

“Rustlin’.”

New enemies A knight and his men return to their castle after a long hard day of fighting.

“How are we faring?” asks the king.

“Sire,” replies the knight, “I have been robbing and pillaging on your behalf all day, burning the towns of your enemies in the west.”

“What?!” shrieks the king. “I don’t have any enemies to the west!”

“Oh, no...” says the knight.

“Well, you do now.”

Three wishes

Marriage disagreements A man and woman are having marriage problems, and decide to end their union after a very short time together.

After a most brief attempt to reconcile, the couple goes to court to finalize their break-up.

The judge asks the husband, “What has brought you to the point that you are now at, where you are not able to keep this marriage together?”

The husband says, “In the six weeks we’ve been together, we haven’t been able to agree on one thing.

The wife says, “Seven weeks.”

Great discovery It was a celebratory mood with the boys at NASA; they had just made the scientific achievement of a lifetime.

As they were uncorking a bottle of champagne, Dr. Lowenstein, the head scientist at NASA, asked everyone to be quiet as he had received a congratulatory phone call from the President of the United States.

He picked up a special red phone, and spoke into it.

“Mr. President,” said Dr. Lowenstein, grinning broadly, “after 12 years of hard research and billions of dollars spent, we have finally found intelligent life on Mars.”

He listened for a second, and his smile gradually disappeared, replaced by a frown.

He said, “But that’s impossible... We could never do it...

Yes, sir, Mr. President,” and hung up the phone. He addressed the crowd of scientists staring at him curiously.

“I have some bad news,” he said, “The President said that

now that we’ve found intelligent life on Mars... ...he wants us to try to find it in Congress.”

Strong man The strong young man at the construction site was bragging he could outdo anyone in a feat of strength.

He made a special case of making fun of one of the older workmen.

After several minutes, the older worker had enough.

“Why don’t you put your money where your mouth is?” he said. “I will bet a week’s wages that I can haul something in a wheelbarrow over to that outbuilding that you won’t be able to wheel back.”

“You’re on, old man,” the braggart replied. “Let’s see what you got.”

The old man reached out and grabbed the wheelbarrow by the handles.

Then, nodding to the young man, he said, “All right. Get in.”

Tight Fit A man walks into a shoe store, and tries on a pair of shoes.

“How do they feel?” asks the sales clerk.

“Well they feel a bit tight,” replies the man.

The assistant promptly bends down and has a look at the shoes and at the man’s feet. “Try pulling the tongue out.” the clerk says.

Craftsmanship varies with country of origin

his lovely fluted bowl was made by hand in Mexico at the turn of the 20th century.

It is wrought of very heavy, alloyed silver that is the same standard as American sterling: 925/1000. It was made by a Mexican silversmith using less than sophisticated tools to craft an item with the unique flavor of the country of origin.

Years ago, hand-wrought silver was less desired than the nearly perfect examples of American sterling being heavily produced in America. In order to make up for a seeming lack of this same sophistication, Mexican silversmiths crafted their pieces in massive weight, sometimes double or even triple the weight of those same sort of objects made in the U.S. Perhaps without even knowing it, the flavor of Mexico transferred to the items produced there creating an entirely new genre of silver known simply as “Mexican silver.”

This bowl has been lightly hammered giving an overall glisten to the entire piece. Hammering is a construction technique and was often buffed out into a gleaming perfected surface. In the case of this bowl, it was used as a decorative technique giving vitality to a simple circular form.

The lobed shape of the bowl was achieved by scoring the bowl from underneath in even quadrants, allowing a floral form to appear.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are at 356.03 (full pool is 360.00) and water temperatures range from between 53 and 55 degrees at the dam on up to the upper 50s on warm days like today in the creeks.

The lake is clearing again after recent weather, but still has a ways to go.

Even though water temperatures have rebounded after the snow and cold weather recently, the fishing has slowed down pretty significantly since that event.

Limits have been hard to come by in recent days and tournament sacks have been light.

For a while, conditions were fairly stable and it looked like fish might settle into a pattern, but seesawing temperatures have ruined any chance of that (for now).

Fish could certainly still get into a good winter pattern, but for now they seem to be moving shallower and not repositioning themselves deep.

Veteran tournament angler Captain Doug Lown says that with days still very short, fish are certainly not getting into a pre-spawn pattern.

Instead of holding to the 45-degree banks they often like at this time of year, they aren’t in those areas. Instead, they are trying to move shallower because of the warm weather.

Some fish seem to

be moving into pockets and ditches, because when the shallows warm crayfish get more active and shad and bluegill may come up.

There is even some surface activity at times.

Right now, Doug says as good a lure for getting bit as anything is a shakey head worm, and he recommends fishing it in areas that aren’t very flat or very steep. Being relatively near deep water is a plus, and fishing rocky points, docks, wood or other shallow cover in 4-10 feet of water is a good bet.

On the catfish front, Captain Chris Simpson (864992-2352) reports that the warm weather has pulled a lot of fish back out of the river and creek channels, and scattered them across flats and main lake humps.

Drifting cut herring in 2540 feet of water is the best pattern, and overall the bite is a little more challenging than when it was colder earlier in the month.

The made-up pregnancy that caused real headaches for Britain’s queen

A

n out of wedlock pregnancy … Palace intrigue and backstabbing … A headstrong monarch scorched by public fury ...

Sounds like business as usual at Buckingham Palace, doesn’t it?

But you won’t find this story in Fleet Street tabloids. It happened 178 years ago, it ruined an innocent woman’s good name, and it taught a young royal a lesson she never forgot.

Here’s how it all went down.

Queen Victoria was just 18 years-old when she ascended the British throne.

The crown was barely on her head when she set about settling old scores.

To say Victoria and her widowed mother, the Duchess of Kent, had a strained relationship is a gross understatement. Mother ruled daughter like a tyrant.

The Duchess was under the sway of Sir John Conroy, her private secretary and rumored lover. He schemed to become the power behind the throne once Victoria eventually reached it.

The girl’s daily life was so structured, she wasn’t permitted to have a single hour alone. Victoria was treated more like a piece of valuable livestock than a person.

So it’s easy to understand why she bitterly despised everyone associated with both her ice-cold mother and the conniving Conroy. That was especially true for Lady Flora Hastings.

Flora was lady-in-waiting for Victoria’s mom, a kind of personal assistant who came from a well-connected family on the lower rungs of the aristocracy. And she fully agreed with the mother’s harsh parenting tactics.

The minute Victoria became Queen she exiled her mother, Conroy, Lady Flora and the rest of their circle to a distant part of Buckingham Place and commanded them to stay there.

When the Duchess asked if Conroy could at least be presented at court Victoria replied, “I thought you would not expect me to invite (Conroy) after his conduct towards me for some years past.”

Then things took an unexpectedly nasty turn thanks to an innocent incident.
