You can use a toothbrush designed for pets, a rubber toothbrushing cap that slips over your finger, a swatch of gauze wrapped around your fingertip, or even a Q-tip in cats or small dogs. It is important to use toothpaste made for dogs and cats. You should not use human toothpaste because pets don’t rinse and spit. They would end up swallowing the foam which can cause irritation to their esophagus. If your pet doesn’t cooperate for brushing, ask your veterinarian for other recommendations.

Regular veterinary exams are important no matter what the age of your pet.

If you suspect a problem, it can also be helpful for you to film what your pet is doing. This can often help in trying to identify the problem. The ultimate goal is to help your pet keep their teeth.

Pets are valued members of the family, and pet owners work hard to provide safe, secure and healthy living situations for their companion animals. A good diet and regular exercise are essential to pet health, and pets also benefit from a strong relationship with their veterinarian.

Routine vet visits are necessary to maintain pet health, but at times pet owners may have to call the vet when something is awry.

Animals are very good at hiding symptoms that may indicate they are not feeling well. Pet owners must learn to recognize certain subtleties that may indicate a dog or cat needs to visit the vet.

Here are some symptoms that may indicate it’s time to schedule a vet visit.

Restlessness: Animals that are jumpy or can’t seem to get comfortable may be experiencing pain or anxiety.

If your typically docile kitty is now pacing the floors instead of relaxing, it may mean something is bothering her.

Physical appearance: Changes in posture or other physical changes may indicate

something is wrong with your pet. Does he seem to be moving slower than usual or look pale? Is the pet avoiding eye contact?

Gauntness or excessive weight gain may be linked to certain conditions as well.

More or less vocal: Some dogs and cats are the strong, silent types, while others like to vocalize. If you notice changes in your pet’s vocalization, he or she may not be feeling well and trying to tell you.

Cold signs: Dogs and cats can suffer the common cold just like humans, but the viruses are different. Symptoms are quite similar to what people experience, including runny nose, watery eyes, coughing, and sneezing. If symptoms last more than a week, book an appointment with the vet.

Dietary changes: Many pet owners learn something is amiss when their pets exhibit changes in their eating habits. Food may suddenly sit uneaten in bowls. Dogs or cats may begin to drink a lot of water or leave the bowl

untouched. If these changes persist, contact your vet.

Digestive issues: Digestive issues also may indicate a problem. Be aware if pets are not eliminating as they normally do. Cats may not be using the litter box, or dogs may be unable to hold their waste until they are outdoors. Frequent accidents or bouts of vomiting may not be indicative of a behavior problem, but rather a symptom of an illness.

Fatigue: Dogs and cats certainly do their share of napping during the day and night. But excessive napping may be a sign of something bigger. Illnesses can cause fatigue in animals, and sleeping may be their way to banish pain.

While symptoms such as bleeding, limping or rising temperatures are clear indicators that things are awry, many pets only experience subtle symptoms when they begin to feel sick. Pet owners should keep an eye out for such issues to ensure their pet is not suffering in silence.

There are new terms in parenting these days.

Helicopter parents constantly try to do for their children.

They will blame the teacher if their child is late to class.

Free-range parents are more like your grandparents, They’re involved only when needed.

So what does this have to do with technology?

Wonder how much a helicopter parent mentality results from technology.

My mom rarely spoke to any of my teachers when I was growing up.

It wasn’t that she didn’t care. They just had no

reason to talk unless I was in trouble. And I was a pretty good kid.

Fast forward to my kids, I get weekly emails from : • The 1st grade teacher with her newsletter about what is going on that week in her classroom.

• The school telling me about what is going on.

From my 5th grader I receive a newsletter in her bookbag.

Are we creating helicopter parents because we are making it too easy to keep in contact with the school?

I never asked for all these emails. The school just started sending them.

I don’t complain because it makes me feel like I’m connected.

I am the type who kicks her kids outside on fair weather days.

I expect my 10-yearold to tell me when she needs something for school. And I appreciate that my 1st grader’s teacher lets me know via email if something is going on.

I’m not saying this is good or bad. I just wonder how much of this helicopter parenting lifestyle is because the schools are teaching us to be a bigger part of our kid’s school lives than they ever have.

FISHING REPORT LAKE MURRAY: Crappie: Slow. Some results reported by tightlining. Go shallower in the afternoon when the water warms up. Some can be found on deep brush around 20 feet. Use jigs or minnows very slow. Fish can be hard to find in deep water, so look at the mouths of creeks that split off from the main river in 12-15 feet.

Striper: Fair. Check down the lake in the back of the big creeks. Some schooling reported up the river. Use freelining with live bait.

Tax Facts The Gettysburg address is 269 words, the Declaration of Independence is 1,337 words, and the Holy Bible is only 773,000 words. However, the US tax law has grown from 11,400 words in 1913, to 7 million words today.

There are at least 480 different tax forms, each with many pages of instructions.

Even the easiest form, the 1040EZ has 33 pages in instructions, and all in fine print.

The IRS (Internal Revenue Service - US Taxing Authority) sends out 8 billion pages of forms and instructions each year. Laid end to end, they would stretch 28 times around the earth.

Nearly 300,000 trees are cut down yearly to produce the paper for all the IRS forms and instructions.

American taxpayers spend $200 billion and 5.4 billion hours working to comply with federal taxes each year, more than it takes to produce every car, truck, and van in the United States.

The burden of compliance is the equivalent to a staff of 3 million people working full time for a year, just to comply with the taxes on individuals and businesses.

The IRS employs 114,000 people; that’s twice as many as the CIA and five times more than the FBI. 60% of taxpayers must hire a professional to get through their own return.

Taxes eat up 38.2% of the average family’s income; that’s more than for food, clothing and shelter combined.

Possession During a readiness exercise, two Air Force security policemen were guarding entry to a bunker-like structure where aircraft were kept.

When a pilot about to do a preflight check approached without his identification in plain view, one of the Air Force security policemen asked him for it.

Complicated Order A resident in a seaside hotel breakfast room called over the head waiter one morning and said, “I want two boiled eggs, one of them so undercooked it’s runny, and the other so over cooked it’s tough and hard to eat. Also grilled bacon that has been left on the plate to get cold; burnt toast that crumbles away as soon as you touch it with a knife; butter straight from the deep freeze so that it’s impossible to spread; and a pot of very weak coffee, luke-warm.”

“That’s a complicated order sir,” said the bewildered waiter. “It might be quite difficult.”

The guest replied, “Oh, but that’s what you gave me yesterday!

A Matter of Trust As a new school principal, Mr. Jones, was checking over his school on the first day. Passing the stockroom, he was startled to see the door wide open and teachers bustling in and out, carrying off books and supplies in preparation for the arrival of students the next day.

The school where he had been a principal the previous year had used a check-out system only slightly less elaborate than that at Fort Knox.

Cautiously, he asked the school’s long time custodian, “Do you think it’s wise to keep the stock room unlocked and to let the teachers take things without requisitions?”

The custodian looked at him gravely. “We trust them with the children, don’t we?”

Shrinking A man rushed into the doctor’s office and shouted, “Doctor! Doctor! I think I’m shrinking!!”

The doctor calmly responded, “Now, settle down. You’ll just have to be a little patient.”

Medical or Surgical?

The two young boys were discussing their ailments together in the children’s ward.

“Are you medical or surgical?” asked the first, who had been in the ward for a week.

“I don’t know what you mean,” replied the second.

“It’s simple,” replied the first. “Were you sick when you came in here? Or did they make you sick when you got here?”

Cherry Tree Once there was a little boy who lived in the country. For bathroom facilities, they had to use an outhouse. The little boy hated it because it was hot in the summer, cold in the winter and stank all the time.

The outhouse was sitting on the bank of a creek and the boy determined that one day he would push that outhouse into the water.

One day after a spring rain, the creek was swollen so the little boy decided today was the day to push the outhouse into the creek. So he got a large stick and pushed. Finally, the outhouse toppled into the creek and floated away.

That evening his dad sternly told him to sit down. Knowing he was in trouble, the little boy asked why. The dad replied, “Someone pushed the outhouse into the creek today.

It was you, wasn’t it, son?”

The boy answered yes.

Then he thought a moment and said, “Dad, I read in school today that George Washington chopped down a cherry tree and didn’t get into trouble because he told the truth.”

The dad replied, “Well, son, George Washington’s father wasn’t in that cherry tree!”

Composer’s Grave When Beethoven passed

away, he was buried in a churchyard.

A couple days later, someone was walking through the cemetery and heard some strange noise coming from the area where Beethoven was buried. Terrified, he ran and got the priest to come and listen to it.

The priest bent close to the grave and heard some faint, unrecognizable music coming from the grave.

Frightened, the priest ran and got the town magistrate.

When the magistrate arrived, he bent his ear to the grave, listened for a moment, and said, “Ah, yes, that’s Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, being played backwards.”

He listened a while longer, and said, “There’s the Eighth Symphony, and it’s backwards, too. Most puzzling.” So the magistrate kept listening; “There’s the Seventh... the Sixth... the Fifth...”

Suddenly the realization of what was happening dawned on the magistrate; he stood up and announced to the crowd that had gathered in the cemetery, “My fellow citizens, there’s nothing to worry about. It’s just Beethoven decomposing.”

Big Turkey A lady was picking through the frozen turkeys at the grocery store, but couldn’t find one big enough for her family.

She asked a stock boy, “Do these turkeys get any bigger?”

The stock boy replied, “No ma’am, they’re dead.”

Underage A professor at a university taught during the day and did research at night.

He would usually take a break in the evening, however, calling up an online strategy game on the Internet and playing with an online team.

One night, he was grouped with a veteran of the game who was a master strategist. With him at the helm, their troops

crushed opponent after opponent, and after six games were undefeated. Suddenly, the fearless leader informed the team his mom wanted him to go to bed.

“How old are you?” asked the middle-aged professor.

“Twelve,” he replied.

Feeling his face redden, he quickly typed, “Eight.”

Haircut Tricks After the man received the full treatment - shave, shampoo, manicure, and haircut, he placed a little boy in the chair.

“I’m going to buy a green tie to wear for the parade,” he said. “I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

When the little boy’s haircut was complete and the man still hadn’t returned, the barber said, “Looks like your daddy’s forgotten all about you.”

Couch Theater DVD PREVIEWS

The first thing viewers will notice is that it’s gorgeously creepy. Each frame is a painting, and every shadow is crawling with pointy detail. It could be that too much attention was paid to the set and not enough to the story. Either way, the mastery of color and screen space brings out the goosebumps.

Doesn’t sound so bad, though, right? New technology must supplant the old ways, and Bond has always caused more destruction than planned. Unfortunately, 007 (Daniel Craig) has it on good authority that Spectre, a super-powerful conspiracy, has plans to hijack the surveillance network, essentially giving them immense power on the global stage.

It’s slick and stylish and all that, but continuing with the current Bond trend, it’s getting more serious, more dark and more concerned with Bond’s role in the modern world. This is where it goes off-track, even for longtime Bond fans. As the stories go deeper into Bond’s background, we’re forced to wonder if we care about that as much as the fun stuff.

“Crimson Peak” (R) -- Mia Wasikowska is the girl-in-peril in this Gothic romance from Guillermo Del Toro. Edith (Waskikowska) is a quiet literary type from Buffalo, New York, around the turn of the 20th century. After the brutal murder of her father, she’s whisked away by a dashing Englishman (Tom Hiddleston) to live in his castle with him and his twisted sister (Jessica Chastain). The castle is as spooky as they come, and as Edith realizes that her life is in danger, the mysteries mount up.

“99 Homes” (R) -- Rick Carver (Michael Shannon at his most stony and villainous) turns homeowners into the homeless in the span of an afternoon. He’s a real-estate broker who uses intimidation and the police to aggressively evict people from foreclosed homes, then sells the property at a profit. With a son and a mother to look out for, Dennis (Andrew Garfield) finds himself desperate after Carver forces them from their home. To make ends meet, Dennis finds himself working for the most evil man he’s ever met, and putting people through the same hell he experienced just to provide for his own family. It’s a gripping and effective dramatization of the horrors from the recent housing crisis.

“Grandma” (R) -- Lily Tomlin stars as the titular relation, a causitic-yet-caring grandmother who goes the extra few miles to help her teen granddaughter get out of trouble and realize her mistakes. Sage (Julia Garner) is pregnant with her loser-boyfriend’s child and comes to Elle (Tomlin) for money for an operation.

Elle doesn’t have the money, but she goes on a funding-drive, hitting up old friends, acquaintances and even her too-busy-for-you daughter for necessary cash. The whole thing is surprisingly short ... and unexpectedly fun. Tomlin’s charm and edge float things along at a fine pace.

The tool of a nanny was also an elegant ornament

T

his small and realistic silver acorn was made in England in the period of 1910.

It is about the size of a small summer plum, complete with a circular ring at the top for hanging from a chain or ribbon.

As with many handmade pieces, the pattern of its construction remains on its surface with hints of its sectional construction visible on both sides.

The natural surface of the acorn is revealed in the light hand hammering that covers a portion of the piece. Careful inspection will reveal the small internal bead visible through the small slit in the bottom.

Fashioned and functioning like a coach’s whistle, this lovely silver acorn was worn on a ribbon or hanging from a chatelaine.

The property of an English nanny, this whistle garnered the quick attention of children when they were summoned.

It is interesting to think of this being employed on a daily basis and used as tool of a worker in a household of many functioning parts.

The acorn has always signified strength and stability, much like the oak tree from

which it comes. It is easy to transfer this definition to the person in the home who was responsible for the well-being of the most precious of all family members.

Good things come to those who earn them.

One of the most deserving high school football players is Airport High school running back Jonathan Earl.

Airport finished the 2015 football season with a 10-2 record and the 5-11, 212-pound senior was a big part of that success, said assistant coach Trey Wallace.

Earl rushed for 755 yards and eight touchdowns. He also caught seven passes for 35 yards and a TD in getting selected for the All-Region 5-3A team.

“Jonathan represented Airport with total class his entire career,” said Wallace.

Wallace also said Earl was a role model in every aspect of his life at Airport.

“Jonathan was a perfect example of what a true student athlete is supposed to represent,” said Wallace.

“High character on and off the field and he played the game with passion.”

Earl said he chose CSU because he was impressed with its coaching staff. He also considered Chattanooga and South Carolina State before deciding on the Buccaneers.

Charleston Southern finished the 2015 season with a No. 7 ranking in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) poll.

Dutch Fork QB Ivy League-bound

Earl committed to Charleston Southern on Saturday while making his official visit to the Lowcountry school. .

“Jonathan was a very good football player for us,” Wallace said. “He played on both sides of the ball and did an outstanding job for us.”

Early in the season, after starting quarterback Brett Burnett went down with an injured leg, Earl came on strong. In a 30-0 win over Lower Richland, Earl rushed for a 129 yards and two touchdowns.

Add Dutch Fork quarterback Cole Douglas to the list of Chronicle Country players who have made college commitments.

At his Twitter account (cdougie12) Sunday, the senior confirmed his intentions to sign with Dartmouth College. Douglas chose the Ivy League school over The Citadel, where his father, Jack, played quarterback.

“I fell like Dartmouth is a special opportunity for me and my family. I know I can be successful academi-

cally and athletically during my four years, and put myself in a position to have

a great future,” Douglas said.

In Douglas’ lone season with the Silver Foes, he threw for 2,050 yards and

14 touchdowns and rushed for 1,101 yards and 16 TDs.

hether it’s relaxing at home, dining out at a restaurant or celebrating with friends and family, Americans are enjoying wine at a wider variety of occasions than ever before.

In fact, 85 percent of frequent wine drinkers now believe that wine is equally appropriate for casual and formal settings alike.

Today’s attitudes and behaviors toward wine drinking were recently captured in the second Gallo Consumer Wine Trends Survey, commissioned by E. & J. Gallo Winery.

The survey of 1,000 frequent wine drinkers found that 82 percent enjoy between one and five glasses per week, which they enjoy at a wide range of occasions.

“We are always glad to see Americans’ love of wine expand each year as they experiment with flavors, varietals and packaging formats,” said Stephanie Gallo, third generation family member and vice president of marketing at E. & J. Gallo Winery. “For more than 80 years, Gallo has strived for excellence and will continue its family tradition of crafting innovative wines that cater to Americans’ evolving wine preferences.”

A more casual approach to wine suggests that shoppers are more likely to try new wines across a range of prices. In fact, more than one-third of survey respondents classified them­selves as a “wine adventurer,” while only 3 percent of those surveyed self-identified as “wine snobs.”

Exploring and experimenting

More sipping occasions means more opportunities to try new wines. The top factors that inspire a frequent wine drinker to try something new are recommendations from friends, family mem­bers and coworkers. Additionally, 86 percent of wine drinkers would be encouraged by a server, bartender or sommelier recom­mendation, followed closely by a recommendation from a wine store employee.

Not surprisingly, millennials are more influenced by the digital world than older generations. Survey data shows that millennials are more likely to be encouraged to try a new wine if it is featured prominently and positively in the media or if it is recommended on social media.

Selecting your sips

The occasion itself still influences the wine choice for many.

While wine drinkers identified Chardonnay as the most popular choice for casual get-togethers, Cabernet Sauvignon was most often the front-runner for formal environments.

At the same time, sparkling wines are breaking out of formal occasions and becoming more popular for everyday moments.

Interest in Rosé is also expanding beyond the peak summer months of June, July and August as more wine drinkers reach for blush wines in April and September.

However, looks still matter in the wine aisle. Millennials are four times more likely than baby boomers to select a bottle of wine based on its label, frequently looking for personality and originality. Baby Boomers, by contrast, look for region of origin and tasting notes on the label.

When it comes to food and wine pairings, the proper match can exponentially improve the eating experi­ ence – no matter what the occasion. The key is to choose wines and foods that complement each other in their components, richness and textures. To help get you started, Gallo Family Vineyards recommends the following pairings: n Fresh fish: Complement garlic butter baked salmon or another favorite fish with a glass of Chardonnay for its rich fruit flavor and lush texture, or Sauvignon Blanc for a more crisp finish. n Barbecue: Pair grilled items, such as shish kabobs, burgers or corn on the cob, with a Riesling for its vivid and sweet flavors. n Red meat: Enhance the robust taste of roast beef or grilled steak with Cabernet Sauvignon for its black fruit and spice notes. n Chicken: Serving an oven-roasted chicken with medium-bodied Pinot Noir will bring subtle flavors of cherry and sweet fruit. n Dessert: Complement a slice of cheesecake, chocolate covered straw­ berry or chocolate chip cookie with Moscato. Thinking inside the box

Mirroring the changes in wine drinkers’ shopping habits, the wine industry is thinking “inside the box” these days.

Boxed wine has evolved consid­erably in the minds of consumers, thanks in large part to its convenience. The extended freshness of boxed wine allows wine drinkers to enjoy it at their own pace and the box’s portability allows for easy transport to all types of occasions. In fact, 1 in 4 surveyed agree that boxed wine is best for large social gatherings and is becoming higher quality.

Wine in a can is a relatively new concept that more than one-fourth of frequent wine drinkers expressed interest in trying – particularly for outdoor excursions. Among fans of alternative packaging, outdoor events remained the primary occasion for the use of these products, which also include mini bottles and tetra packs.

“The increase in popularity of these new packaging options is unde­niably making wine more portable, practical and possible to enjoy anywhere,” Gallo said. “A singleserve package, in particular, offers a convenient option for those who reluctantly grab a beer simply because it is easier.”

Overcoming wine fears

As wine culture becomes more approachable, common fears among wine drinkers are less prevalent. The survey found that fears, such as mispro­nouncing a wine’s name or being judged for wine choices, are still on the minds of some wine drinkers, but those who enjoy it regularly are not dramatically affected by these concerns.

“As an industry, we must continue working to remove these barriers in order to nurture wine’s expansion into everyday occasions,” Gallo said. “By exploring the more emotional implications of wine culture and sharing these findings broadly, we hope to welcome more people into wine.”

We all know people who are “younger” than their chronological age.

These people are usually active, are “young at heart”, and “ positive” in their outlook on life. We often hold these folks in high esteem.

Conversely, we also all know people who are “older than their years”. Plagued by aches and pains, maybe prematurely gray or balding, sometimes overweight or out of good physical condition, these unfortunate folks appear burdened by life. Life has “taken its toll”.

But everyone is trying to look and feel younger these days. How many times do you hear things like “40 is the new 30”, or maybe “50 or 60 is the new 40”? This may be true with the way our body looks or feels.

How about how our teeth look and feel?

We can divide a person’s dental age into three categories. These are often not “chronologically dependent”. The esteemed dental educator, LD Pankey , founder of the Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education, described “dental age” by three categories; Youth, Adult, and Elder.

A Dental Youth is categorized by little to minimal dental treatment, other than regular, preventative dental care. These patients have had regular cleanings, maybe previous orthodontic care, a few restorations (fillings), some sealants and wisdom teeth removal.

These patients often benefit greatly from teeth whitening. These patients are often teenagers or young adults, who grew up with fluoridat-

ed water and regular dental care. These are typically patients in their teens to maybe thirty and beyond.

Many have reaped the benefits of fluoride in the drinking water, and grew up with regular preventative maintenance. Some just were born with the right genes.

Maybe their only dental treatment, other than regular “cleanings” has been some cosmetic work. Sometimes elective, and sometimes out of necessity. Personally, I was born with fluoridated water, and have reached my later fifties without a cavity! I did however, get in the path of a racquetball racquet while in college, and have had extensive cosmetic dentistry done to my front teeth.

Ouch!

A Dental Adult is categorized by more problems and treatment. Numerous teeth have been restored, some multiple times. Some teeth may have been lost, and are replaced with bridges or implants. They may have been treated for gum disease, or have had root canals and crowns. Cosmetic care for these patients usually involve porcelain crowns and veneers. This is a typical adult patient in my dental practice. They usually come in as a new patient looking for an exam and cleaning, sometimes with a specific problem, and sometimes by word of mouth referral or introduction, looking for solutions to a specific problem. Some are looking for sedation dentistry, to get many things done in a short period of time, while they snooze, and to relieve their dental anxiety.

A Dental Elder is often the victim or result of incomplete, inadequate or nonexistent dental care or “patchwork”. They often are missing teeth, which are replaced by partial dentures or complete dentures, or nothing at all. The teeth may be misaligned and the patient often has “bite” issues and trouble chewing their food properly. Some-

times they have to “gum it”.

Often they take medications which cause a “dry mouth”, so they suffer from dental decay and have trouble wearing their dentures or partials. Did you know that losing all of your teeth, regardless of dentures, will cost you up to ten years of your life? This is because you cannot eat or chew the foods that you need to eat to be healthy. THIS IS NOT WHERE YOU WANT TO BE! I have many patients in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s who are “Dental Youths” . They are blessed with good genetics, but also are proactive with their dental care, in the office and at home.

I also have patients in their 20’s and 30’s who are “Dental Elders”. They are missing many or all of their teeth, and based on their age, are really dentally crippled. The causes could be genetic, neglect, or unfortunate circumstances (trauma, poor past dental care).

Maybe their diet or habits are bad (like sipping Mountain Dew throughout the day without brushing).

They often can be successfully and comprehensively treated with dental restorations, but the treatment is complex, and can be very expensive.

So what is Comprehensive Dental Care?

The best definition of comprehensive dental care is whatever type of dental treatment that is required to either maintain your dental health (if you are a “dental youth”), or to restore your dental condition to be as close to a dental youth or dental adult, as possible.

How do people get into trouble with their teeth, and why should we restore these teeth? After all, many of us have that family member or relative who is able to eat anything with a minimum of teeth.

There are really four reasons why people get into trouble with their teeth.

Decay. Did you know that there are between 32 and 37 types of bacteria in our mouths that cause dental decay? Scary, huh?

Dental decay is definitely on the decline, thanks to fluoride, availability of regular dental care, and education about the importance of regular dental care. But for some people, with “bad genes” or who take many medications , dental decay can become rampant and debilitating.

Gum Disease (periodontal disease, or what used to be called ”pyorrhea”). Back in the “old days” of dental care, this was often ignored because there were so many decay related problems to treat! But now, with the

well-known and published links between gum disease and heart disease, these problems can no longer be ignored. Fortunately, the treatment of gum disease has probably advanced more than any other aspect of dental treatment.

Stress. This can be stress on your teeth from improper alignment or bite, or stress that causes abnormal wear (grinding).

Your dental bite is influenced by many things; the health of the jaw joint and associated chewing muscles, the alignment of the teeth, the direction that you chew and the muscle activity of the muscles of your face.

About 10% of people grind their teeth at night (actually about 20% of people grind their teeth during the day!). Many of these folks are totally unaware of this condition, but grinding (bruxism) can accelerate the wear on teeth 10 to 20 times normal!

A dental bite (occlusion) that is misaligned can put extra, unbalanced forces on teeth and chewing muscles.

This can also cause extra wear on the teeth or headaches from muscle strain.

Medical or systemic problems. Did you know that 25-50% of patients suffer from Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) and are totally symptomless?

The only sign of the disease is inappropriate wear or loss of enamel on the teeth.

So half of all GERD patients could only be diagnosed by your dentist. Unfortunately, undiagnosed or untreated GERD can lead to the precancerous condition of Barrett’s Esophagitis. Many medications today (or just Father Time) can cause “dry mouth syndrome”. Patients with deficient salivary flow often develop extensive tooth decay. Diabetes is another common cause of deficient salivary flow.

Comprehensive dental care is about dentistry that is predictable and long lasting. It considers every aspect of your life, medical condition, and your dental condition. It’s about the dental care that is best for you. We often call this “adult dental care”.

You want to ask questions, look at cases similar to yours, ask for testimonials, and ask for credentials and training that the dentist has completed.

Comprehensive care can mean some time and money investment, but the dividends that it will pay will last the rest of your life!
