FISHING REPORT Lake Murray: Largemouth bass: Slow to fair. Veteran angler Captain Doug Lown reports that some decent sacks are being caught in each tournament, but overall it is pretty tough to get bites a lot of days. The best bite has been taking place early in the morning, but after the sun gets up it has been harder to catch fish and anglers need to seek out shade (yes, this is a winter report.

Really.) Early in the morning Doug is finding action in pockets near deep water, likely where bait has pulled up overnight, but later in the day he is concentrating on steep, rocky banks.

Crankbaits, jigs and shakey head worms will catch fish. Avoid wind-blown areas and look for gulls to locate general areas where bass will be found – everything is bait dependent right now.

Crappie: Slow. Captain Brad Taylor reports that the bite was pretty good until about Christmas when the rains came through, but at that point things pretty much completely shut down. For fish to start biting again there will need to be several days without freshwater inflow to give the mud time to settle out. When that happens look for fish to set back up in the mouths of creeks and for anglers to catch them tight-lining. For now fish are holding close to the bottom, but soon they will suspend again.

Photographic Memory A soldier, serving overseas, was annoyed and very upset when his fiance sent him a letter breaking off their engagement and asking that he return her photograph.

So he asked his friends for all the unwanted photographs of women that they had. He bundled these photos together and mailed them to her with a note that said: “Regret that I cannot remember which one is you.

Please pick out your photo and return all the others.”

Old Rivalry After 20 years two college rivals bumped into each other. “Do you remember how I used to be so fat and flabby?’ asked the first. “Well, I’ve been on an exercise program for a few years, and now I run marathons.”

“That’s great!” replied the other man. “And,” the first man continued, “Do you remember how I used to be shy and a poor student? Well, I took a course in public speaking, and now I make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year on the lecture circuit.”

“That’s great!” came the reply.

“Oh, and how about you?” the first man asked.

“Have you changed at all?”

“Well, yes I have”, replied the second man. “Remember how brutally honest I used to be, and how when someone said something uninteresting, I would reply, ’I couldn’t care less?’”

“Well now I just say, ’That’s great!’”

Selling Pretzels A little old lady sold pretzels on a street corner for 25 cents each. Every day a young man would leave his office building at

lunch time and, as he passed her pretzel stand, he would leave her a quarter, but would never take a pretzel.

This went on for more than five years. The two of them never spoke.

One day as the man passed the old lady’s pretzel stand and left his quarter as usual, the pretzel woman spoke to him, “Sir, I appreciate your business.

You are a good customer, but I have to tell you that the pretzel price has increased to 35 cents.”

Great Service A woman rushed into the supermarket to pick up a few items. She headed for the express line where the clerk was talking on the phone with his back turned to her.

“Excuse me,” she said, “I’m in a hurry. Could you check me out, please?”

The clerk turned, looked her up and down, and smiled, “Not bad.”

Marriage Views Men and women have two distinct views about a wedding.

The husband to be wakes up in the morning, plays a round of golf and counts the minutes until he has to be at the altar.

The wife to be, on the other hand, wakes up in the morning and is panicking. She immediately begins to organize things, making sure everything is in proper order. In her mind she is repeating what she has to do.

“All I have to do is go down the aisle, get to the altar, and marry him.”

She repeats this over and over again, until she begins to shorten it to three words which she continues to repeat...

What Time is It? On some air bases the Air Force is on one side of the field and civilian aircraft use the other side of the field, with the control tower in the middle.

One day the tower on one particular base received a call from an aircraft asking, “What time is it?”

The tower responded, “Who is calling?”

The aircraft replied, “What difference does it make?”

The tower replied “It makes a lot of difference: If it is an American Airlines Flight, it is 3 o’clock.

If it is an Air Force, it is 1500 hours.

If it is a Navy aircraft, it is 6 bells.

If it is an Army aircraft, the big hand is on the 12 and the little hand is on the 3.

If it is a Marine Corps aircraft, it’s Thursday afternoon.”

Unlikely Hero Passengers aboard a luxurious cruise ship were having a great time when a beautiful young woman fell overboard. Immediately there was an 80 year old man in the water who rescued her.

The crew pulled them both out of the treacherous waters. The captain was grateful, as well as astonished, that such a whitehaired old man performed such an act of bravery.

That night a banquet was given in honor of the ship’s elderly hero. He was called forward to receive an award and was asked to say a few words.

He said, “First of all, I’d like to know who pushed me.”

he Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award goes to successful car dealers who support the industry and their communities. It is the automobile industry’s most prestigious and coveted award for car dealers. David Herndon, president of Herndon Chevrolet in Lexington, is one of 55 nominees across the country who will be honored at the 98th annual National Automobile Dealers Association Convention in San Francisco Jan. 23.

Q. It must be quite an honor to be nominated.

What do you think it takes to win a national award of this magnitude?

A. I am not sure what it takes to win, since every year there are different nominees. Dealers are nominated by either state or local associations of new car dealers who are members of the Automotive Trade Association. Judges at the University of Michigan Graduate School of Business Administration makes the decision based on information submitted for applicants.

Q. Who has won it that you know and what did he have to do to win?

A. I have a good friend, Mike Alford, from Marine Chevrolet-Cadillac in Jacksonville, N.C., who was fortunate enough to win two years ago. Mike was heavily involved in supporting the Marine base there.

Q. How were you nominated and how do you assess your chances of winning?

A. I was nominated by the South Carolina Automobile Dealers board of directors. It is difficult to assess one’s chances of winning the award since there are so many worthy nominees every year.

Q. To what do you attribute the growing success of Herndon Chevrolet?

A. We have been very fortunate to be in this great town. When my father, Buck Herndon, bought the dealership in 1968 from Harold Looney, the store was located where Rush’s is now. We moved to our current location in 1984 and the area has seen phenomenal as everyone knows that has been here for any time.

Our Chevrolet quality improvement over the years and taking care of our customers have helped us grow and enabled us to support many community activities.

Q. How is working in and operating a large family business like yours different from a corporate ownership?

A. Family businesses can be rewarding and challenging at the same time.

The decision makers are always on-site, which is not always the case for large corporate stores. This enables us to make decisions on which community events to support and to address issues quickly.

Q. What do you see in the future for the industry including alternative fuel vehicles?

A. The automobile business is a great business for young people. Technicians are always in demand and there is a lot of opportunity for those who are tech savvy since vehicles contain so much new technology each year.

The internet has changed the way cars are bought and sold and this is a very exciting time to be in this business.
