The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are at 354.66 (full pool is 360.00), and water temperatures are in the mid-50s.

Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that striped bass fishing on Lake Murray has gotten really good, with by far the hottest action up the rivers where anglers are having great success throwing at fish where they can see birds, bait and fish boiling.

Earlier in the day, fish remain a little deeper, and on warm afternoons, they move into shallower water to feed.

The most success has come on double rigs with bucktails and ice flies, but fish can also be caught

pulling bait. Fish are feeding on threadfin right now and so smaller live bait has been the best bet.

Captain Ron Davis of Edisto Island spends a lot of time on Lake Murray at this time of year, and he advises that when fish are shallow, like they have been recently, anglers might have better luck throwing smaller bucktails or lighter Alabama rigs rather than something that sinks too fast.

When fish are very shallow, throwing the conventional rigs often means that you are fishing underneath the fish.

Catfish are still biting well, and Captain William Attaway (803-9240857) reports that the bite

is good in 30-50 feet on herring, shad and perch.

There are very occasional off days, but overall the fishing has been strong.

On the crappie front, Captain Brad reports that fishing has been tough at best.

A few fish have been caught tight-lining way up the rivers 10-12 feet down in 12-15 feet of water, and there have also been a handful of fish caught around deep docks and bridges.

The Lake Murray Fall CATT Final was Dec. 16, and more bass information will be forthcoming after that. Everyone seems to be concentrating on rocks with baits like crankbaits, jigs and Alabama rigs.

BOYS Moody Classic at Northwestern H.S. It was an historic holiday season for the River Bluff boys’ basketball team.

In claiming the program’s first-ever tournament title, the Gators surpassed their school-record win total of 12 set two years ago.

They opened with a 56-45 win over Crestwood, defeated the host school 71-61 in the semifinal and upended Orangeburg-Wilkinson 6863 in the final.

“Winning the Moody Classic was great for our kids and I think we had to win games playing against various styles,” head coach Benjamin Lee said. “I think the kids began to believe in each other and that they could

The Lady Silver Foxes played host to Blythewood this past Tuesday.

Youth Basketball Clinic at Pelion High School The coaching staff and basketball players at Pelion High School will hold a clinic from 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday for boys and girls ages 6 to 14.

The clinic will include warm-up and practice drills to help improve young players throughout their season.

The lights went out, plunging the theater into darkness. A backstage door opened, letting in a draft that triggered an enormous fireball.

People fumbled blindly toward exits. But the ushers (mostly frightened teenagers) fled at the first sign of trouble without unlocking the doors. Panic turned into pandemonium. People in the balconies jumped to the floor to escape the flames.

When it was over, the scene was beyond horrible. Bodies were found stacked six deep near the

emergency exits, 27 were locked prior to the show to prevent people from sneaking in.

There was a huge fallout afterward. Several people from Chicago’s mayor to the building inspector and the theatre’s owner were slapped with criminal charges. All were either acquitted or had their convictions overturned on appeal.

In fact, only one person served jail time – a saloon owner convicted of robbing bodies that had been taken to his nearby establishment when it was turned into a temporary morgue.

At least 602 people were killed. By comparison, 492 perished in a 1942 nightclub fire in Boston, and 146 in New York’s

infamous Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in 1911. Even the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 claimed fewer victims, an estimated 250300.

Several safety advancements followed in the wake of the tragedy. Panic bars began to be installed in the U.S. (they’re now required in most high-occupancy buildings), and doors in public buildings began having lighted exit signs.

Not only were those safeguards too late for the 602 people who died in the Iroquois Theatre Fire, most Americans today are unaware that it even happened.

Obtain a 55 gallon box of Legos (or you may substitute roofing tacks). Have a friend spread them all over the house. Put on a blindfold. Try to walk to the bathroom or kitchen.

Do not scream because this would wake a child at night.

THE GROCERY STORE TEST

Borrow one or two small animals (goats are best) and take them with you as you shop. Always keep them in sight and pay for anything they eat or damage.

THE INGENUITY TEST

Take an egg carton. Using a pair of scissors and pot of paint, turn it into an alligator. Now take a toilet paper tube and turn it into an attractive Christmas candle.

Use only scotch tape and a piece of foil. Last, take a milk carton, a ping-pong ball, and an empty box of Cocoa Puffs. Make an exact replica of the Eiffel Tower.

THE AUTOMOBILE TEST

Forget the BMW and buy a station wagon. Buy a chocolate ice cream cone and put it in the glove compartment. Leave it there.

Get a dime. Stick it into the cassette player. Take a family size package of chocolate chip cookies. Mash them into the back seat. Run a garden rake along both sides of
