Keeping Up with the Joneses (PG-13) — On a

quiet cul-de-sac, two unbelievably attractive and stylish people move in, paying cash.

Karen (Isla Fisher) keeps an eye on them from across the street, because the kids are at summer camp and she needs something to do while her husband Jeff (Zach Galifinakis) works in human resources.

Snooping reveals that these new neighbors (John Hamm and Gal Gadot) are actually spies, pushing the unassuming Jeff and Karen into highstakes espionage hijinks.

There isn’t a bad member of the cast, but every action is stuck in a very tired formula.

Jokes come in predictable pacing with expected delivery.

the freedom to be a little weirder, and Hamm shows in some moments that he really does have the timing and tuning for comedy.

Ouija: Origin of Evil (R)

— Set in the late 1960s, the prequel bests its predecessor with better suspense and a relish for the old-fashioned scare flicks of its setting.

Alice Zander (Elizabeth Reaser) runs a scam psychic business out of her home, with the special effects run by her two daughters: Lina (Annalise Basso), the teen, and Doris (Lulu Wilson), who is whatever age makes the creepiest possessed-little-demon girls.

Once they bring a Ouija board into the act, Doris takes a real liking to it, opening up herself and their home to some really bad spirits. As supernatural terrors mount, Father Tom (Henry Thomas) is called in for support.

A woman goes missing (Haley Bennett) and Rachel thinks she saw something from the train, because she looks at that woman’s house from the train every day and idealizes the beautiful couple living there.

However, the missing woman was Rachel’s ex-husband’s nanny, and she looks a lot like Rachel’s ex’s new wife! Got it?

Oh, and everybody is really dreary because of all the suburban angst.

When your plot is so tangled, plot twists just look like regular ol’ plot developments.

When your characters are so consistently distraught or uptight, major emotional moments lose their flair. I can’t speak to the book, but the film had some complicated narrative threads that weren’t woven as intended.

Quarterback 2016 proves to be dramatic, memorable season

The 2016 season will truly go down in the history books.

It started with unfortunate news with the untimely death of River Bluff High School defensive lineman Lewis Simpkins. Throughout the season, the Gator community decided themselves towards honoring his memory with a special decal as well as making donations in support of his family.

For the second straight year, Mother Nature wrecked havoc on the high school football schedule. Unlike the infamous flood of 2015, Hurricane Matthew pushed the S.C. High School League schedule back two weeks.

Not only did the season end in mid-December, it also resulted in numerous roster changes for both the Touchstone Energy Cooperative North-South All-Star Bowl in Myrtle Beach and the Shrine Bowl in Spartanburg.

Through it all, Chronicle Country teams shined like never before. Through the first month of the season, there were three undefeated teams in SCHSL and SCISA from Lexington County.

who would play for championships in their respective leagues. A year after cancelling the final three games of the season due to a lack of players, W.W. King entered the SCISA ‘8-man’ Division II championship with a 13-0 mark.

The Knights were unable to give themselves a happy ending. Facing defending champion Andrew Jackson Academy, coached by former Lexington High School head coach Allen Sitterle, W.W. King was defeated in the title game.

A month later, Dutch Fork made sure its effort for a second state title was not in vain.

On Dec. 17, the Silver Foxes defeated Boiling Springs 28-21 to become the first-ever undefeated Class 5A champion.

Dutch Fork finished the season 15-0 and were one of six Chronicle Country teams to win 10 or more games along

with W.W. King, Gilbert, Batesburg-Leesville, Chapin and Brookland-Cayce.

Other notable achievements: • Gilbert High School set a school record for consecutive wins (9), victories to open a season (9) and most wins in a season (10).

• Brookland-Cayce set a school-record for victories (13)

• White Knoll advanced to the third round for the first time in school history.

• Pelion snapped Chronicle Country’s longest losing streak and ensured every county team had a victory.

• River Bluff won an emotional season-opener on the road, but lost its final nine games in the final season under head coach David Bennett.

• Chapin won 11 or more games for the fifth time in school history. All three losses suffered this season were at Cecil Woolbright Field. Quarterback Cooper Bemis threw for 2,945 yards.

• Dutch Fork quarterback Reese Nichols threw for over 2,500 yards, rushed for over 1,000 yards and had 39 combined touchdowns. Running back Ron Hoff rushed for 28 touchdowns.

• Batesburg-Leesville won four straight playoffs games on the road.

• Northside Christian Academy won three games in its inaugural season.

Let’s hope 2017 will have more positive moments and is free of bad weather and tragedy.

TAKING A LOOK BACK ON 2016

Stories that united, divided, angered and delighted us

C

hronicle readers are well aware of the ups and downs the county experienced in 2016. There was no shortage of fuel for any emotions in this tumultuous and trying year.

Here are the stories that captured your hearts, provoked your rage or inspired you to do and give more in the years to come.

1

Lexington 1’s Title IX lawsuit

While the dust has pretty much settled on the issue, few stories garnered as much attention in Lexington County as the Title 9 lawsuit filed against Lexington School District 1.

The ordeal began when Sam Light, the parent of a Lexington High School softball player, filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights.

He alleged the district had violated Title 9 legislation by discriminating against the girls softball team.

Light’s primary concerns were the unsafe conditions at the softball field and the disparity between softball and baseball facilities.

In June, Light hired renowned Title 9 attorney Sam Schiller and filed a lawsuit in federal civil court.

According to officials, plans were being developed to improve the LHS softball field prior to the lawsuit being filed, with a finished

achitectural concept drawing dated for May 17, 2016.

Sam Light disputed these claims.

Eventually, the lawsuit was settled in September, with the district agreeing to the terms set by Sam Light.

In the settlement, the district was ordered to pay Light’s $29,500 in attorney fees, as well as complete renovations at the softball field no later than Feb. 1, 2017.

Among the renovations are: • Central heat and air for the press box, concession stand and public restrooms: • redesigned dugouts; • handicap access to the field and its facilities; • installed drinking fountains; and • black aluminum perimeter fencing to fully enclose the field, as well as a padded backstop and netting extending from dugout to dugout.

Despite the results, Lexington School District 1 denies any fault, and after the settlement issued a statement in which spokesperson Mary Beth Hill emphasized the district had not admitted to any wrongdoing.

“The district could have chosen to continue to defend the lawsuit, but felt to prolong its defense and divert its resources (time, effort and legal costs) away from the students was not in the best interest of the district or of the district’s children.

“Under the settlement agreement, the district does not admit to any Title IX violations.”

Players said they have been using the unsafe field for years, avoiding the exposed concrete backstop and leaping over storm drains in the outfield. Sam Light, parent of one of the softball players, filed a formal complaint with the U.S. Department of Education in late February 2016, and eventually filed a lawsuit in federal civil court for alleged Title 9 violations.

The school district eventually settled before the case reached the courtroom, but as part of the settlement, admitted to no Title 9 infractions.

Tough times for Chapin’s mayor

Chapin Mayor Skip Wilson lost control temporarily of Town Council agendas.

A court ruling stripped him of authority to control what council talks about.

The mayor also lost his bid to charge a 2% hospitality tax after it ran into Wilson opposition from local businesses.

And the council rejected his proposal to change town election dates, giving him a fifth year in office.

The mayor has been feuding with the council since he fired a popular town administrator without notice or their approval.

In addition to the firing of the town admin, Wilson drew a lot of criticism when he fired beloved Chapin Police Chief Troy Crump in

Wilson replaced Crump with Chapin native Seth Ziegler, formerly a captain in the West Columbia Police Department.

Despite public outcry, Wilson’s move to replace Crump was completely legal, according to the S.C. Municipal Association.

Carolina Water in hot ... water

Officials with Carolina Water Service Inc. didn’t make any new friends in 2016.

In fact, they pretty much dug a trench and put themselves at odds with multiple parties.

Currently, CWS is facing The Congaree Riverkeeper in federal civil court.

The Riverkeeper wants to end the utility’s pollution of the Saluda River.

In the first hearings, CWS said they’ve tried to tie in to

the regional wastewater system operated by the Town of Lexington — enemy No. 2 — but were denied.

The Riverkeeper argues the utility should be held accountable for not honoring their obligation to an interconnection established in 1994.

S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control denied the renewal of CWS’ permit to operate the I-20 facility in August 2015 following a protest involving hundreds of activists last year.

The suit, filed in January 2016, alleges years of illegal sewage discharges into the Saluda River.

The plant serves 2,000 customers in the West Columbia area and generates around 800,000 gallons of sewage a day.

In the meantime, the relationship between Carolina Water Service and the

Town of Lexington hasn’t improved.

The two came to an impasse earlier this year, resulting in a lawsuit being filed by CWS against the Town and the Environmental Protection Agency.

The case was dismissed

by U.S. District Judge Margaret Seymour in late September.

She ruled that such matters aren’t within her federal jurisdiction, but should instead be handled by the state of South Carolina.

Town of Lexington Mayor Steve MacDougall has maintained the Town wants to purchase and improve the I-20 facility, but discussions have resulted in a stalemate.

It’s a Dog’s Life The Head

A naval command instructor was indoctrinating his new naval command recruits.

He said, “You are all in the Navy now and in the US Navy we have our own language.

For instance, in the Navy we don’t call it a bathroom; we don’t call it a toilet; we don’t call it a latrine.”

A young Naval Command recruit raised his hand and asked, “What do you call it?”

“Son, we call it a ’head’.

Now tell me son, what is the difference between a ’head’ and a ’hole in the ground’?”

The naval recruit said, “Well, I don’t know.”

The naval command Instructor said, “Son, how do you expect to command a US Naval ship if you don’t know your head from a hole in the ground?”

Harvard grads Two young men who had just graduated from Harvard were excited and talkative about their future plans as they got into a taxi in downtown Boston.

After hearing them for a couple of minutes, the cab driver asked, “You men Harvard graduates?”

The cab driver extended his hand back to shake their hand, saying, “Class of ’63.”

Longer life

A Kentucky horse breeder had a filly that won every race in which she was entered, but as she got older she became very temperamental.

He soon found that when he raced her in the evening, she would win handily, but when she raced during the day she would come in dead last.

He consulted the top veterinarians and horse psychologists to no avail.

He finally had to give up

A man approaching retirement went along to see the company doctor for one final checkup.

To his horror the doctor said, “I don’t know quite how to put this, but your heart is on its last legs and you have only got six months to live.”

“Is there nothing I can do?” asked the shocked man.

“Well,” said the doctor, “you can give up alcohol, and cut out smoking. Don’t eat rich foods, no dancing, and don’t even think about having marital relations!”

“And this will make me live longer?” the man asked hopefully.

“No,” replied the doctor, “it will just seem longer!”

SCE&G agrees to halt rate hikes

Cayce-based S.C. Electric & Gas has been under fire all years from its critics.

Under pressure, SCE&G agreed to these concessions which regulators approved: • Lower its Return on Equity — money SCE&G keeps from rate increases — from 10.5% to 10.25%.

• Ask no future rate requests before Jan. 28, 2019.

In a new development, state Reps. Todd Atwater and Mac Toole of Lexington County are pressing state regulators for data that could lead to reforming a state law which made the SCE&G rate hikes possible.

They want to know if: • SCE&G electricity customers pay more than customers in other states.

• Other states have a better system for protecting customers from excessive electricity rate hikes.

So long, dear Stephano’s

After 39 years, Karen and Steve Lollis retired and sold Stephano’s.

Karen expressed her gratitiude to the community and stressed how lucky she and her husband were to have operated Stephano’s for such a long time.

“Steve and I are blessed that we were able to work and encourage each other,” she said. “Where I lacked, Steve could produce and we made it work.

“Lexington has been good to us,” Karen added. “We’ll miss our customers who have been loyal all these years.”

It was the end of an era, but Ashley and Blair Sims kept the tradition of locally owned going by re-opening the restaurant as The Root Cellar.

“We feel it reflects the farm to table, and southern heritage of great food,” Blair Sims said.

Sims said they will offer “modern food with Southern roots. We would love to see more operators in Lexington buying local and putting

LMC begins $400M expansion

Lexington Medical Center started work on its $400 million, 550,000 square foot expansion this year.

The hospital also bought land off I-20 for future expansion in Lexington.

New CEO Tod Augsburger said it will take three years to build the largest such expansion in the state.

The hospital’s greatest challenge is keeping up with rapid growth.

Lexington County is expected to grow from 275,000 residents today to 365,000 by 2030 and to 476,000 by 2040.

Caskey replaces veteran House leader Bingham

State House Ethics Committee Chair Kenny Bingham of Cayce decided this year to retire.

Bingham The former Lexington 2 board chair and House Republican Majority Leader wanted more family time.

A veteran 11th Caskey Circuit solicitor, Micah Caskey, 34, of Springdale won his seat.

Caskey is a decorated Marine Corps officer with tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Caskey prosecuted murder and child rape cases.

Trump victory tops 2016 news

What do you consider the most significant news event of the past year?

Not everyone will agree on one single event.

A reader told me recently he thought nothing in 2016 compared with the October flooding in 2015.

I wondered if he slept through the presidential campaign this fall.

Obvious Solution The boss ordered one of his men to dig a hole 8-feet deep.

After the job was completed the boss returned and explained an error had been made and the hole wouldn’t be needed. “Fill ’er up,” he ordered.

The worker did as he’d been told. But he ran into a problem. He couldn’t get all the dirt packed back into the hole without leaving a mound on top. He went to the office and explained his problem.

The boss snorted. “Honestly! The kind of help you get these days! There’s obviously only one thing to do. You’ll just have to dig that hole deeper!”

Can’t take it with you An old man was on his death bed. He wanted badly to take all his money with him.

He called his priest, his doctor and his lawyer to his bedside.

“Here’s $30,000 cash to be held by each of you. I trust you to put this in my coffin when I die so I can take all my money with me.”

At the funeral, each man put an envelope in the coffin. Riding away in a limousine, the priest suddenly

broke into tears and confessed that he had only put $20,000 into the envelope because he needed $10,000 for a new baptistery.

“Well, since we’re confiding in each other,” said the doctor, “I only put $10,000 in the envelope because we needed a new machine at the hospital which cost $20,000.”

The lawyer was aghast.

“I’m ashamed of both of you,” he exclaimed. “I want it known that when I put my envelope in that coffin, it held my personal check for the full $30,000.”

Honest Phlebotomist During a visit to a military medical clinic, I was sent to the lab to have blood drawn.

The technician there was friendly and mentioned that his mood improved every day because he was due to leave the service in two months.

As he applied the tourniquet on my arm, he told me that taking the blood wouldn’t hurt much. Then, noticing my Air Force T-shirt he asked me what my husband did.

When I replied that he was a recruiter, the technician smiled slyly and said, “This might hurt a little more than I thought.”

But after a long talk in New York, Trump announced he would nominate her to be the U.S. ambassador to the U.N. That means Lt. Gov. Henry McMaster who has long desired to serve as governor will

It also opens a thorny question: Who will replace him as lieutenant governor?

The state Supreme Court has been asked to rule on the validity of a state Constitutional amendment approved by voters but secretly changed in the Senate.

The amendment would give the governor authority to pick the lieutenant governor starting in 2018.

The date requirement was eliminated in the Senate.

Who’s the Boss?

Donald Trump was supposed to take over the Republican Party, but the question going forward will be whether the Republican Party takes over him.

So far the early legislative agenda of Republicans after the Trump revolution is shaping up to be what you would have expected prior to the Trump revolution. It's a cookie-cutter GOP program that any Republican who ran for president in the past 40 years would feel comfortable signing, with its prospective centerpiece being another round of across-theboard tax cuts.

This is why the Democratic approach to Trump so far, besides being insane, is wrongheaded. The Democrats are preparing to fight what they consider a kleptocratic handmaiden of Vladimir Putin, an unprecedented threat to the American republic that justifies cockamamie schemes like calling for the Electoral College to ignore the results of the election.

There is no doubt that Trump is unlike any prior president. But Democrats will in all likelihood find their opposition to Trump running in a familiar rut -- Republicans are heartless tools of corporations and the wealthy. They don't care if people lose their health insurance. They are cutting taxes for the rich. They are deregulating bankers. Etc., etc.

The candidate who issued thunderous jeremiads during the campaign against a globalized elite that had literally stolen from smalltown America has assembled a Cabinet that by and large could have been put together by Ted Cruz, or for that matter, Mitt Romney.

Then there's the congressional agenda. The early indications are that Republicans will pass a partial repeal of Obamacare out of the gate that could further destabilize the law's

rickety exchanges and lead to people losing their insurance.

Next, congressional Republicans want to move on to large-scale tax reform. The starting point will likely be House Speaker Paul Ryan's already well-developed plan for acrossthe-board income-tax cuts and a lower corporate tax rate. For all its merit, Ryan's reform could have been incubated by any conservative think tank before anyone imagined Trump might run for president, let alone win.

What's the point in having a populist Republican in the White House if congressional Republicans can't find a way to couple some replacement measures with their Obamacare repeal to give people other options for getting health insurance? Or if congressional Republicans can't make their tax plan more oriented toward the middle class, perhaps including a cut in payroll taxes?

All of this is subject to change, and Trump can potentially blow up the best-laid plans of congressional Republicans with one tweet. Of course, Trump will be heard from on infrastructure, trade and immigration, where he is in a different place than much of his party.

Neither wing of the GOP may like it, but the Reaganites and the populists are now in an uneasy alliance. It behooves the champions of a highly traditional Republican platform to think about what Trump's victory means and to be more mindful than in the past of the interests of working-class voters. And it behooves Trump the firebrand to consider the responsibilities of governing.

There is a balance to be struck. The Republican establishment may welcome a more "normal" Trump, but so, in the end, will Democrats.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report BASS: It continues to be a pretty tough fall for bass fishing on Lake Murray, and veteran tournament angler Captain Doug Lown reports that it’s been hard to establish a consistent pattern for catching fish.

Even when anglers find numbers of fish, it has been hard to find good ones – a 4½ pounder has been a big bass in most recent tournaments.

For the most part, Doug says that the fish that he and his tournament partner have been catching have been fairly shallow, and they haven’t caught much in more than 10 feet of water.

Fish are not scattered out in certain depth ranges but instead are holding to certain little spots, and it has been hard to locate them as they move around a lot.

Doug suspects that constantly dropping water levels have forced the fish to constantly reposition.

CHANNEL AND BLUE CATFISH: The bite is still pretty strong, although Captain Chris Simpson (864-992-2352) warns that the recent warm weather has scattered fish out and slowed the bite just a little.

How a murdered hound became ‘Man’s Best Friend’

W

hen Milton Levine returned from World War II, he had some very common, but very pressing, problems.

First, he didn’t have much money.

That was doubly urgent because he brought a lovely young war bride from France with him.

Second, he didn’t have a job. With 15-plus million service members returning to civilian ranks at the same time, and with the economy shifting from wartime back to peacetime footing, there just weren’t enough jobs to go around. Plus, he had led a platoon that built combat bridges in Europe; that skill set wasn’t in high demand Stateside.

So rather than waste time searching for a non-existent position, Milton decided to go into business for himself. Which presented another problem: just what should that business be? He read in The Kiplinger Letter, a weekly publication forecasting business trends, that the best fields for returning ex-GIs were toys or bobby pins.

I’m not sure how bobby pins turned out, but the toys part was a home run suggestion. Millions of veterans were marrying and starting families. Overnight, America had a Baby Boom on its hands. And as they grew, those kids wanted toys.

Milton made the right call. He partnered with his brother-in-law and started a small mail-order plastic toy business. It took time, but they learned the ropes and gradually made a go of it. They placed ads in almost every comic book of the era, offering “100 Toy Soldiers for $1” (eventually creeping up to $1.75). They sold imitation shrunken heads to hang on rearview mirrors. (Some could still be seen when I was kid in the 60s.)

And they also sold the Spud Gun. What on earth, you ask, was that?

Just what it sounded like. You stuck the gun barrel into a raw potato, then fired the chunk as a projectile.

So Milton and his brother-in-law were doing ok. They weren’t getting rich, but they were paying the bills.

And then a pool party changed everything.

Inspiration often strikes at the most unlikely times. This was one of them. Because when Milton’s sister decided to host a 4th of July picnic beside the swimming pool at her southern California home in 1956, she had no way of knowing it would lead to a revolution in the toy industry.

The families were relaxing poolside. The kids were playing games.

Milton happened to notice a mound of ants, and bent over to watch them.

He remembered visiting his uncle’s farm in Pennsylvania when he was a boy, where he dug up ant colonies, put them in Mason jars and watched in fascination as they built tunnels and crawled through them.

Then it hit him: why not build an ant observation toy? And with that, his small business suddenly had a new product unlike anything else on the market.

Milton was doodling ideas on a notepad by the time the fireworks started.

Milton also said, “I found out ants’ most amazing feat. They put three kids through college.” That’s because those tiny ants and those plastic Ant Farms made Milton Levine a very rich man.

He bought out his brother-in-law in 1965 and changed the company’s name to what you know today: Uncle Milton’s Industries, featuring Uncle Milton’s Ant Farm.

For years he heard the tired old joke, “If you’ve got all these ants, where’s the uncle?” So he gave that title to himself.

By the time Uncle Milton sold his company in 1997 (reports said he got as much as $40 million for it), more than 20 million Ant Farms had been sold. And they’re still selling about 30,000 every month, too.

Uncle Milton died in 2011 at the ripe old age of 97. World War II veteran, loving family man, self-made millionaire … I challenge you to show me a better example of the American Success Story.
