County councilman: Trapping part of new cat law worth the effort?

Will anyone take the time to do this?

That’s the question Lexington County Council Chairman Todd Cullum asked about a new cat ordinance now in effect.

While the law is well-intentioned, Cullum questions whether people will embrace it.

After reading a story about the ordinance in the Sept. 28 Chronicle, Cullum wanted to ensure the public understood what’s involved in the new law.

It stipulates that if you want to do something about loose cats in your neighborhood, the county will refer you to Pawmetto Lifeline on Bower Parkway in the Har-

bison area near I-26.

That’s when your headache begins, said Cullum.

“First, you have to drive out to them to put a deposit down on a trapping cage,” he said. “Then you take the trap and set it. If you catch the cat, you bring it to Pawmetto Lifeline.

“They’ll take the cat, spay or neuter it and tip one of its ears,” he said.

“Then you have to go back, get the cat, and bring it back where you found it to release it.

“Finally, you have to take the cage back to get your deposit,” he finished. “That’s four round trips to the Harbison area.

“I doubt people in areas farther away from (Pawmet-

to Lifeline) will actually go through all that trouble.”

For a Gilbert resident, that’s about 184 miles — and four hours — of driving, consuming about seven gallons of gas. It would be even farther from Batesburg-Leesville, Pelion or Swansea Cullum also considered some potentially inhumane consequences.

“What happens if you set the trap and then leave for the weekend?” he asked.

“That cat will be trapped for days, without water or food, in potentially 100-degree weather if it’s during the summer.”

Is there another option?

County officials haven’t offered one.

iPhone’s messaging application is a white talk bubble in a green background.

The Android messaging application can be a green talk bubble with a smile on it, a white envelope with a yellow paper or, in the case of Verizon, it will be a red talk bubble.

To send a text message you will need their cell phone number. You can either type the cell phone number directly into the ‘To’ section of the text message or have it as a contact name.

Don’t be afraid to text, just make sure you do it when you aren’t driving.

On iPhones, the flashlight comes standard and easy to find.

Just swipe up from the bottom edge of your screen.

This brings up the control center. Then click on the flashlight icon.

For Androids, only the later versions have a flashlight application. Swipe down from the top of your screen to your control center. Then swipe left on all your icons.

One of them should be a flashlight.

If you do not see this, you may need a separate application to control the flash for you.

WiFi Did you know that if your cellphone is on a WiFi connection, it won’t use your phone’s data plan when you download or use the internet?

For Androids you can set up your Google Play to only auto-update applications over WiFi. That way you don’t burn through your data unnecessarily.

Just check out the settings tab in your Google Play app.

Many other applications also have a “do not do” unless under WiFi. You just have to check the settings of the application.

For instance Facebook, has the ability to not watch videos unless you are on WiFi. For Apple products, there should be an option under the settings to only allow downloads while on WiFi. As well as each settings under your applications.

Airplane Mode This is a great feature on cellphones.

Essentially, if you want to turn off all connections to your phone (WiFi, cellular, etc) you just hit the Airplane button. This stops all traffic in and out.

For Androids, you just need to use your finger to slide from the top of your screen down. This opens up a settings panel where you can find the little airplane icon and hit it.

For iPhones, swipe from the bottom of your screen up. This brings up your control center, where you can hit the airplane icon.

Just don’t forget to turn it back on in order to use your phone.

Beautiful heirloom silver creates family memories

hese lovely silver goblets are a gleaming, elegant addition to any table.

As the holidays approach, the idea of home and family comes into sharper focus. Gathering around the table for a home cooked meal has become a rarity in our modern world.

How wonderful it would be to settle back with comfort food prepared by those we love. Many of you will recall the iconic painting by Norman Rockwell of a Thanksgiving table. There are others that come to mind as well. The idea of a family dinner was celebrated in earlier times when life was more unsure and times were turbulent.

These silver goblets belong to my dear friends Pete and Karen. They have been used by them and their children as well as generations before them.

In speaking with Karen, she cannot remember a time the goblets were not on the table. The memories she has passively made for her family are ones they will remember all their lives. These silver goblets represent home, family and love.

You will notice there are two shorter goblets in the collection as well. These are older

pieces from another family member and add the thoughts and memories of that generation to the table as well.

Perhaps you will craft a beautiful table this year for your family using dishes from other generations as well as silver, linens, and other items you have. This will tell the story of your family to those who will never hear it unless you share it. Take your treasures out of storage and use them. As the world continues to be unpredictable, dining at home with family and friends will become all the more important; all the more special.

Remember to clean your silver with a soft polish, store it in white tissue paper or pacific cloth designed just for this purpose. Your silver will be easy to care for and ready to use with just a few simple steps like these.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels have stabilized around 355.18 (full pool is 360), and water temperatures have fallen into the mid70s.

Overall, the lake is pretty clear, but there are some areas where the wind has really stirred up the silt and stained it. The river is pretty dirty.

Bass are in a transition period, and veteran tournament angler Captain Doug Lown reports that with days getting shorter — as well as weather changes — bait seems to

be starting to move into the creeks in a typical fall move.

Fish are transitioning out of their summer pattern and getting shallower. They are in different places than 4-6 weeks ago, around the time that the FLW Championship was here, and Doug says that a lot of fish are in the last places they go before transitioning to the bank.

Instead of being in 18-20 feet of water, now they are more likely to be found in 8-13 feet.

While fish can still be caught in some of the same places as during the Cup, they are more likely to be smaller ones.

But until the lake turns over fish will be chasing bait/suspending and so throwing something like a Pop-R that can cover water is a good bet.

While fish are headed towards the bank, many are holding in the middle of bays and pockets as where a drain runs back into a cove.

Others are relating to subtle underwater points.

Instead of positioning your boat where you can cast onto the bank try staying two casts off of it.

Dropping water levels before the storm is another reason fish have been hesitant to get close to the bank.

For the last couple of years, most of the big fish have been caught shallow on buzzbaits. If you like fishing this way try throwing a small buzzbait or a floating worm in about 3-6 feet of water slightly off the bank.

On the striped bass

side, Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that from Burton Point to Dreher Island there has been a lot of schooling activity. Fish seem to be related to the channel, and it seems as if their positioning has a lot to do with bait migrations.

Since SCE&G stopped pulling water to lower the lake before the storm, it seems like fish have started heading back into the creeks, after briefly backing up when they were pulling last week. There

are still some fish in the extreme lower pool.

While fish can be caught in 30-40 feet on downlines or on free-lines, right now it seems that the best fish are being caught schooling.

It's a random bite and fish could come up in the morning, mid-day or evening, but if you stick with it in areas where bait is present, they will come up.

On the crappie front, Brad says that fish are starting to bite over 15-20 foot brush at the mouths of creeks.

New Lexington District 2 elementary school named Riverbank

“Riverbank” is the name of the new Lexington 2 elementary school.

Teal and white will be the school’s colors and its mascots are Sea Turtles.

Pineview Elementary School Principal Davis Simms, who will move to Riverbank, presented survey results at the Lexington 2 School Board meeting Sept. 28.

Simms said 76% of the respondents chose Riverbank over Brookland as the name of the new school.

The mascot name choices of Sea Turtles and Rapids tied at 33.7% among those voting for the name Riverbank, but Sea Turtles had a slight edge among voters who chose

Coaches in all sports have a reputation for superstition.

They also keep to a successful routine.

With all the talk about Friday the 13th, it turns out the alleged unlucky number has proven otherwise for the most part for Dutch Fork High School's football teams.

The general statistics will show you the defending Class 5A champions have outscored their last four opponents 203-23.

There are other facts which show the number 13 has served as a good omen: • 13 consecutive region victories • Running back Bryce Thompson has scored 13 touchdowns in the last 3 games.

• Has defeated Friday’s foe White Knoll 13 out of 15 meetings.

The one area where 13 does not work to Dutch Fork’s advantage: This Friday the 13th marks the second anniversary of the Silver Foxes’ last region loss at Ridge View.

For Lexington County’s lone undefeated team, Gilbert is riding high with the lucky number 7.

For the second straight year, the Indians are 7-0 and can match last week’s school record of consecutive wins to start a season.

Standing in the way is Strom Thurmond, a team the Indians had not defeated in 7 meetings until last year.

Lexington woman gardens with the Good Lord in mind

Some people just seem to have a green thumb.

Linda Harrelson leaves it up to God. "God is the developer of everything," she said of gardening. "It's part of God's way. He sends the rain, He sends the sun."

Originally from Loris, Harrelson has been a Lexington resident since 1972.

She's been a "gardener" since birth.

"I come from a family of farmers," she said. "Gardening is in my blood."

Try anything once In her yard on a quiet cul-de-sac near downtown Lexington, Harrelson can be found tending to her gardens.

She and her husband Walker enjoy the fruits of her labors.

Those fruits are as varied as the names of her latest adventure.

"I'll try growing anything once," she said with a smile.

Harrelson's most recent endeavor was a 3-footlong bean, also known as bora, bodi, long-podded cowpea, asparagus bean, snake bean or Chinese long bean.

The longtime gardener said her son Earl brought her the seeds and told her about the unusual vegetable — a legume with pods as long as an arm.

"Lord willing, they came out pretty good," Harrelson said, holding one of the pods in her hands.

"Some of these are definitely longer than my arm."

2 words new Harbison Theatre director loves to hear: Sold out!

When the curtain opens on the first production since Kristin Cobb became Harbison Theatre’s director this summer, a hush will fall over the audience.

The house will be silent for a few seconds — while shouting inside Cobb’s head will be two of her favorite words: Sold out!

A full week before the season opener, the ticket office gave out the good words: “We’re very close to sold out already.”

Cobb assumed her new role this summer following a similar position with Kershaw County Fine Arts Center she had held since 2007.

Some of the skills she honed there already are proving transferable.

She is counting on her background of connecting patrons with opportunities to support arts within the comCobb munity to also serve her well at Harbison Theatre.

“I want to make sure we are relevant to the entire community – through events, festivals and performances, or class programming — this will be a place to connect,” Cobb said.

What will she miss and what does she look forward to?

“Through the Fine Arts Center, I worked for many years on Camden’s Down Home Blues Festival,” Cobb said.

“But now I can look forward to blues productions here. The Blind Boys of Alabama are coming Nov. 17; they’ll be performing with Irma Thomas.”

The college has set the bar high for the theatre, Cobb said, and she says she intends to reach it.

“I already have taken countless calls from agents and management groups interested in coming here,” Cobb said.

“And I will, of course, be going in January to the big booking conference in New York where dates get nailed down — that will be for the following season,” Cobb explained.

When Midlands Technical College President Ronald L. Rhames announced that Cobb had accepted the director’s position, he noted the institution anticipates continued development of Harbison Theatre’s relationships in the Midlands community.

Her responsibilities include maintaining a high level of performance quality while delving into community dynamics to find out what other interests may be out there, waiting to be explored.

‘Because I get to help:’ Samantha’s trip to Nicaragua with Granddad

As many of readers know, I’ve made short mission teams to Central America since 2004.

Since July 2013 one of those trips was a family trip where parents and their children went together for projects with local partners connected to Lexington Baptist Church.

We have painted and done light construction, led Vacation Bible Schools, taught arts. crafts and sports, visited local families ad attended worship services in the neighborhood.

All of this is enlightening and exposes my team to new cultural experiences.

I always feel inspired and closer to God on these trips.

Last year the trips became even more special because my granddaughter, Samantha Stilwell went to Nicaragua with me for her first mission trip.

I had talked to my grandson Cole about going but he was not able to at the time.

Let me digress for a moment. Cole is 14 and Sam turns 13 in a few weeks.

Since they were born, their granddad brought them souvenirs from exotic places.

They listened to me regale them with stories about places and people.

It was natural they would have an interest in going so I promised both that when they turned 12 I would take them.

Recently, Sam and I were reflecting on the last two trips to Nicaragua and the similarities and differences between the two trips.

She told me that last year everything was new for her and she had no idea what to expect.

She has been in a Spanish immersion program at Pleasant Hill Elementary and now Middle School. I think she speaks the language well.

Speaking and understanding skills don’t improve at the same pace.

Last year Sam felt challenged (as do I) to understand when they speak too fast.

But she was able to communicate well enough to be a big help during the VBS

What was different for her this year?

“We did more construction and had a totally new team but I knew several of them from school," she said. "Since it was my second trip, I knew what to expect.

"Since we worked at the same two churches as last year, I remembered some of the local kids and they remembered me, and it was so nice to see and spend time with them again.”

After another year of Spanish classes, it was easier for her to speak and understand them.

She spent time with Lidia, our translator on Ometepe Island who speaks English and Spanish well. If we didn’t have her we’d prob-

A favorite for all of us was the trip to Ojo de Agua (Eye of the Water) swimming hole at the bottom of a volcano.

What makes it different is crystal clear, cold water.

Sadly, this was our last trip to Nicaragua for a while.

Over the next couple of years, I’ll be taking the family mission team to Honduras to start construction of a children’s worship area at a small church on the northern coast. Both Samantha and Cole will be going with me next year.

An apple a day the easy way

There is some truth to the old saying about the health benefits of eating an apple a day.

One apple has about 80 calories and about four grams of fiber.

Be careful not to get below 32 degrees F, because freezing will quickly deteriorate fresh apples.

Turn chicken and cook on the other side. If the skin is sticking to the pan, it probably isn't finished on that side. Reduce heat as needed if the skin starts to burn before it is golden brown.

3. Turn the thighs over and continue to cook for about 15 to 20 more minutes, uncovered. When the meat closest to the bone is cooked through, the chicken is done. Transfer the chicken to a plate.

4. Thinly slice the Brussels sprouts, apple, red onion and garlic. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil to the pan.

Add in the Brussels sprouts, apple, red onion and garlic clove to the skillet, and cook over medium-high heat.

Cook, stirring, until the Brussels sprouts are wilted, about 5 to 6 minutes.

5. Stir in the vinegar,

brown sugar and the remaining ½ teaspoon each of salt and black pepper.

6. Return chicken to pan to warm, skin side up, about 2 minutes. Sprinkle with the toasted pecans.

He realized a fortune could be made in movies. Produced for just $150 (about $4,000 today), The Great Train Robbery made tens of thousands of dollars.

So Max and a partner founded Essany Studios. The buddy ran the business side and Max handled the acting, writing and directing.

It was decided Max needed a more Anglican sounding name. Since his claim to fame was a Western, he came up with one perfectly suited for that genre: Gilbert “Broncho Billy” Anderson.

(I’ve been unable to discover why he added an H to bronco, but he did.)

Essany made hundreds of silent films. One in 1909 was the first time a pie was thrown in someone’s face for a laugh. But it was Westerns where Broncho Billy made his mark. He starred in some 148 of them, cementing his title as the first Western movie star.

And yes, he eventually learned to ride a horse.

In 1914, Essany stole a young Charlie Chaplin from Keystone Studios.

He made 14 comedies (and even had a cameo in a Broncho Billy Western) before being lured away to yet another studio for more money.

By 1916, Broncho Billy was tired of moviemaking.

He sold his interest in Essany and bought a theater

It’s a Dog’s Life Custody hearing A 7-year-old boy was at the center of Chicago courtroom drama this week when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him.

The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents, and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with the child custody law and regulations requiring that family unity be maintained to the degree possible.

The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents, and he adamantly refused to live with her.

When the judge suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried out that they also beat him.

After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.

After two recesses to check legal references and confer with child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Chicago Cubs, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.

The Postal Service put him on a stamp in 1998, he was

inducted into the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in 2002, and he even got a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.

So recognition belatedly came to the man who had made it all possible by telling a little fib.
