softly glowing snooze of a tearjerker.

Starting around the 1960s and ‘70s, Mr. Church first has to win over 10-year-old Charlotte (Natalie Coughlin), who doesn’t yet know her mother (Natascha McElhone) is dying.

Mom hangs on longer than expected, and so does Mr. Church.

Murphy gives a wellhandled performance, but the script doesn’t give him much to do besides give meaningful, caring glances.

(R) — Ben Cash (Viggo Mortensen) lives in a selfmade paradise away from civilization with his wife and six kids.

They hunt their own food, and the children are homeschooled in survival tactics and the evils of consumer capitalism.

When his wife is struck with illness, Ben has to bring his brood into the real world and see just how well

he’s prepared them.

The children’s grandfather (Frank Langella) despises Ben’s parenting style and plans to take custody of the kids, forcing Ben to face to possible flaws in their off-the-grid upbringing.

It has all the trademarks of an uplifting offbeat indie comedy swirled with family melodrama, but it’s not from one of the usual directorial suspects.

Director Matt Ross handles the story well, and Mortensen nails his role as a conflicted man of conviction.

phie (Maria Bello) recently lost her husband, and now she’s talking to the severely disturbed ghost of her childhood friend.

When the lights are out, you can see her, scratching the floor or coming to claw your face. Flip the lights on, and she disappears.

Sophie’s twenty-something daughter, Rebecca (Teresa Palmer), moved out as soon as she could, but now feels she has to rescue her younger brother, Martin (Gabriel Bateman), from the evil surrounding their mother.

The movie gets all of the jumps it can out of the lights-on-lights-off trick.

The shots are filled with creeping shadows made by moving flashlights and flickering bulbs, and you’ll watch every one of those shadows for the next attack.

It’s not the most inventive or psychological horror, but the performances and direction make a tight thriller out of a gimmick that could have fallen flat.

White House chef tells his story Chronicle Editor Emeritus Jerry Bellune met former White House chef Marti Mongiello when he was in North Carolina to present an advertising program for business owners. The chef and his wife and daughter live in and operate a bed and breakfast retreat in a comfortable two-story frame home on Cleveland Street in Grover, N.C. a few miles west of Kings Mountain. The two became friends and this interview with the chef resulted.

Q. Where did you grow up and get interested in cooking?

A. I grew up in the Philadelphia, Pa., region which has a rich history of food. I was raised as a traditional Catholic and was exposed to the Italian-American lifestyle. This often meant we ate pizza long before anyone delivered it by car.

At Thanksgiving and Christmas, turkey or lamb or a fullsized roasted ham with sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie were served. But there was a full size platter of ravioli with gravy. Gravy is a code word in Italian American for tomato sauce.

This led to a natural interest in cooking but no one in my family taught me their secrets and I did not work in the kitchen as a young chef under the tutelage of my mother or my grandmother.

When I was about 4 years old I began developing a strong work ethic. My first and most famous dish was pizza prepared with a slice of white bread, ketchup and grated cheese sprinkled on top. About the age of six, I was famous for my elaborate place settings. I would have numerous glasses and 6 to 8 pieces of silverware set for myself for a private dinner.

Q. What did you have to go through to be chosen for White House duty?

A. I was first told to keep my mouth shut since I had been telling people I was considering leaving the Navy after 9 years.

I did my first four years on a nuclear submarine from Charleston, then hotel management school in Memphis and ran a hotel with 1,500 rooms in Pensacola, The Bay Shores Resort. I returned to sea on the USS Lapon, another nuclear submarine.

I was looking for new challenges. My commanding officer Patrick Casey told me about the White House military office which protected the president. He told me two Navy restaurants were under the Oval Office and the Navy chefs and hoteliers ran the most prestigious and exclusive resort in the world, Camp David.

He said the Navy chefs and hoteliers run the vice president’s house and he wanted to nominate me for interviews by the White House military office. It may take a year and a half to make it through the process including investigating my family. He could get me to the interviews but after that it would be up to me and my family.

Q. How were you disabled?

A. I was lucky to be qualified for nuclear submarine and have under sea and above sea warfare pins. I was thrilled

to visit Europe many times, lived in Japan three years and took care of 12 nuclear submarines.

I was offered an opportunity to become a command duty officer and became the first cook ever to qualify for water space management working with numerous allies across half of the world. Admiral Joseph J. Krol, Jr. asked me to assume the position of public affairs officer and represent the United States in matters ranging from nuclear talks to the opening of Jordan to Free Trade Agreement status. This was the first Muslim country ever to receive this. It was signed by then-president Bill Clinton.

On different missions I received imminent danger pay in operation Southern Watch, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

I volunteered for duty in Bosnia with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and lived in Honolulu negotiating $2.6 billion in food contracts and taking care of 37 nuclear submarines.

I accepted an offer to work at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Brussels, Belgium where I hosted hundreds of dignitaries and diplomats and took care of a private home for my 3-star admiral. I was advanced in rank to Senior Chief Petty Officer.

I had graduated first in my class in the Law Enforcement Academy and the Department of Defense and from security and anti-terrorism schools conducted by the Marine Corps. Serving as a squad leader for an anti-terrorist force came in handy in Belgium as 9/11 occurred while I was on duty.

I am a member of the Iraq Afghanistan Veterans of America and the Wounded Warrior Project. The toughest disabilities I am dealing with involve being in pain every day from my knees and right foot, lower back and right leg from an injury on a nuclear sub and was operated on off The Horn of Africa on the USS Saipan.

To quote Yogi Berra, “It’s déjà vu all over again.”

For the second straight year, Mother Nature has washed out Week 7.

Once again, the South Carolina High School League pushed back the scheduled games to Week 11 on Nov. 4.

In addition, the playoffs in all classifications will begin Nov. 11 and the state championships will take place Dec. 9 and 10.

In SCISA, Northside Christian Academy and W.W. King Academy will not have to worry about making up its Week 7 clash. The game was canceled and the two teams will finish out the regular season with just nine games.

Week 8 action will start a day early Thursday when Lexington visits Blythewood. The Wildcats (6-2, 2-1) is 6-2 alltime against the Bengals (52, 2-1) and have won the last four meetings.

Lexington has won its last three games, while Blythewood is coming off a 35-13 loss to top-ranked and undefeated Dutch Fork on Sept. 30.

By the Numbers

Dutch Fork has won 10 straight regular-season games.

Swansea holds a 14-8 advantage in the series against Pelion and has won the last four meetings.

Gilbert is seeking to set a school record for consecutive wins to open the season against Strom Thurmond. It would also be the first-ever win in seven meetings against the Rebels.

Batesburg-Leesville is 2-0 all-time against Bamberg-Ehrhardt and is facing it for the first time since 1979.

W.W. King is 6-0 for the first time since the 2013 SCISA

She explained that about 90% of the villagers today are Catholic.

Christianity is practiced along with the ancient Indian religious rites which are an important part of the pueblo life.

Pueblo religion is complex yet it does not conflict with the Catholic church.

She said her ancestors’ spirituality differed from Christianity, Judaism, Islam and other religions.

Ancient Americans didn’t hold organized worship services. Instead they practiced their faith in the way they conducted their daily lives.

In their rituals they asked for success in hunting and farming. They believed this would ensure success in the harvest and the hunt.

European adventurers considered the natives’ spirituality as superstition.

The adobe buildings were likely erected more than 2,000 years ago.

They looked much as they do now when the first Spaniards arrived in New Mexico in 1540 in search of the fabled golden cities of Cibola.

The two structures called Hlauuma (north house) and Hlaukwima (south house) are believed to be the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the U.S. The Pueblo is made entirely of adobe — dirt mixed with water and straw, then poured into forms or made into sun-dried bricks.

The walls are several feet thick. The roofs of each of the five stories are supported by large timbers hauled from mountain forests.

Smaller pieces of wood are placed side-by-side on top and the roof is covered with packed mud.

The outside surfaces must be continuously maintained by replastering with think layers of mud. Inside walls are coated with thin washes of white earth to keep them clean and bright.

The Pueblo is actually many individual homes, built side-by-side and in layers, with common walls but no connecting doorways.

In early days the homes had no doors or windows and entry was gained only from the top. The inhabitants pulled up the ladders at night for security.

Red cabbage a staple during Oktoberfest, amazing when paired with sausage

Certain foods remind me of fall.

A tray of beautiful red cabbages with a hint of purple and blue on their ruffled leaves resembles a bouquet of flowers.

Raw red cabbage is a flavorful addition to salads, or it can be slow-cooked to sweet perfection as a side dish.

One of my favorite recipes for red cabbage comes from award-winning cooking instructor Rick Rodgers's cookbook "Autumn Gatherings: Casual Food to Enjoy With Family and Friends" (Morrow Cookbooks).

Featuring red cabbage, sausages and apples, it's a classic example of German cooking and celebrates the bounty of the season.

Rodgers says that he "learned early in my cooking life not to try and rush the cabbage, as it needs plenty of time to soften into the melting mass of sweet and sour ingredients that makes it so unique, and becomes the perfect place to cook your favorite sausages."

The apples and apple juice enhance the sweetness of the cabbage, and the vinegar preserves its color.

The flavors of the dish intensify the next day, so if possible, prepare the cabbage ahead of time.

Nestle the sausages in the pot, let them cook while the cabbage is re-heating, and enjoy the flavors of fall!

OKTOBERFEST SAUSAGES WITH RED CABBAGE • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided • 6 slices thick-sliced bacon, coarsely chopped • 1 large onion, thinly sliced • 2 Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored and cut into ¼ -inch-thick wedges • 1 (2½-pound) head red cabbage, cut into wedges, core removed and thinly sliced • 1 ½ cups apple juice • 1/3 cup cider vinegar • ½ cup packed light brown sugar

• ½ teaspoon dried thyme • 1 bay leaf • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 12 assorted sausages, such as bratwurst, Weisswurst, hot links and knockwurst, pricked with a fork

1. To make the red cabbage and apples, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a very large Dutch oven or flameproof casserole over medium heat.

Add the bacon and cook, stirring occasionally, until crisp and browned, about 8 minutes.

Using a slotted spoon, transfer to paper towels to drain, leaving the fat in the pan.

2. Add the onion and cook, stirring often, until golden, about 10 minutes.

Transfer to a bowl.

3. Add remaining 2 tablespoons oil to the Dutch oven and heat until hot but not smoking. Add the apples and cook, stirring often, until lightly browned, about 3 minutes.

Add the cabbage, apple juice, vinegar, brown sugar, thyme and bay leaf, and stir well to coat the cabbage.

(The vinegar helps the cabbage hold its color.) Bring to a boil over high heat.

Reduce heat to mediumlow and cover.

Simmer, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender, about 1½ hours.

Season with salt and pepper to taste.

4. Bury the sausages in the cabbage and cover.

Cook until they are heated through, about 12 minutes.

Using a slotted spoon, transfer the cabbage and sausages to a large serving bowl, removing the bay leaf, and tent with aluminum foil.

Bring the cooking liquid in the pot to a boil over high heat and cook, stirring often, until reduced to about ½ cup, about 5 minutes.

Pour over the cabbage and sausages and serve hot.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report BASS: Fair. Veteran tournament anglers Stan Gunter reports that there have been a couple of productive patterns.

One way to catch fish is with topwater lures fished off points for suspended fish, and the other main pattern is throwing a buzzbait early and then flipping docks up the rivers

CATFISH: Fair. Captain Chris Simpson (864) 992-2352) reports that fan-casting a variety of baits — including dip baits and cut herring — in 10-25 feet of water has been most effective for channel catfish.

that the best fish are being caught on free-lined herring fished in the lower pool; water quality is too poor for a deep, down-line bite.

Get me a drink John walks into his 5th floor apartment after a long day of work, he exhaustively sinks into his favorite arm chair, puts up his footrest, turns on the TV, and turns to his wife, Hannah, and says, “Honey, please get me a hard drink.

I think it’s about to start.”

Hannah rolls her eyes, heads to the kitchen, takes out a beer from the fridge, and brings it to John.

“Honey,” said John two minutes later, “please get me another one, quickly, before it starts.”

“What in the world is wrong with you, you lazy good-for-nothing?” Hannah screamed. “Do you think I’m your personal waiter? You plop yourself down on your easy chair and expect me to be at your beck and call? Is that all I’m good for?!?”

John sighs, and mutters under his breath, “It started…”

20/20 “Harry,” whined Mary, to her husband of 20 years.

“What should I do?! I’m not ready for old age! I’m only 40 years old but I look and feel like I’m over 55! My face is all wrinkly, my back is bent over, and my hair is all thinned out.”

“Well,” said Harry after looking her up and down, “There is one thing about you that still works as good as new.”

“Oh Harry!” said Mary sitting down next to her husband, “you always know just what to say!

What are you referring to?”

“Never mind” said Harry looking down.

“C’mon Harry, please tell me what you were referring to.”

“Mary, please don’t make me.”

“Harry I insist.”

“Well I was going to say ‘your eyesight seems to be working just fine!’”

Drop dead John, Sam, and Abe, 3 retired friends, would get together every night, rain or shine, to play poker.

It was a nice way to pass the time and the men enjoyed it immensely.

John’s wife wasn’t so fond of her husband’s poker playing.

She thought it was a dirty and low way to fill his time, but she had long ago resigned herself to her sorry fate, although inside of her, there was always a low flame on the back burner, waiting to erupt.

One Wednesday night, after a few nights of boring games, something exciting happened.

Sam watched in amusement as John and Abe, each convinced that they had the better hand, slowly put their life savings into the pot.

Things started to get really intense when John, running out of available cash, added his car and house into the pot. When there was no money left to bet on they each showed their cards.

The geniuses over at Facebook have brought us closer to family and friends (and acquaintances), probably more than we really ever needed.

To bring work relationships and projects into a more close knit group, those same Facebook geniuses have created Workplace.

Essentially it is Facebook for the office. It isn’t tied to your personal account, but it does have the same features.

You have a wall, groups, reactions, news feeds, ability to video call and much more.

Their idea is to create collaboration no matter the location of your employees.

A company called Slack created something similar back in 2013 and has more than 3 million daily users. This gave Facebook the challenge to offer something similar.

If you want to try it, be prepare to pay a $3 monthly user fee.

Marketplace For many years Facebook users have created groups and pages to help sell or trade unwanted items.

In an effort to capitalize on that, Facebook created Marketplace.

It is similar to Craigslist and eBay, just prettier. And it lets you browse and buy items locally.

Facebook didn’t roll out products without it being filled with extras.

You’ll be able to filter based on price, category and location, even discuss the transaction and share items elsewhere.

They’ve also made it easy by adding a new tab inside your Facebook mobile app.

Facebook Marketplace can only be viewed by those 18 and older. As long as your child has their correct birthdate on their profile, you shouldn’t have to worry about them getting into trouble via Marketplace.

coln did a mea culpa and accepted responsibility for the whole matter. Shields, with the display of Lincoln’s upper arm strength still fresh in his mind, swiftly accepted.

The matter was settled.

But Lincoln being Lincoln, it couldn’t end without one bit of humor.

As the people back in Alton anxiously awaited word of the duel's outcome, a boat came into view.

As it drew closer, they were horrified to see a bloody body slumped over the bow. Folks surged toward the river bank as the boat docked.

Up close, they discovered it was a log with a bright red shirt pulled over it. Lincoln and Shields stepped onto the dock, howling in laughter at having pulled a fast one. The crowd soon joined in, and everyone went home happy as clams.

The two men remained on good terms for the rest of their lives. Shields moved around a lot and went on to serve as U. S. Senator from Illinois, Minnesota and Missouri. (That's right; 3-count'em-3 different states. Now that's a political hat trick!)

When the Civil War began he was living in California and was sent east as a brigadier general.

In March 1862 Shields became the only Yankee general to ever defeat the legendary Stonewall Jackson in battle. But that turned out to be his one and only good day on the battlefield. The rest of his military record was dismal. He was soon promoted to major general; then the promotion was withdrawn; then it was considered again; finally it was shelved. Embarrassed by the big brass’ lack of confidence, Shields resigned his commission and left the army. The War Department didn’t stand in his way. Still, Shields represents Illinois in Statuary Hall in the U. S. Capitol, where he has stood in uniform since 1893.

And Lincoln ... well, you know how his story turned out.

As far as great duels go, Lincoln-Shields doesn’t rank up there with the Burr-Hamilton affair. But in spite of its absurdity, it still teaches an important lesson today.

Two people can overcome any difference, if they’re only willing to meet halfway. No trip to Bloody Island required.

Coffee May Preven t Liver Disease Drinking two cups of coffee a day may red uce the risk of developing cirrhosis of the liver by 44%, according to a new study. Researc hers studied 400,000 pa rticipants and found the risk of cirrhosis decreased as the number of cu ps of coffee consumed increa sed (3 cups a day low ered risk by 57% and 4 cu ps, by 65%). Rese archers caution that while dri nking coffee may low er risk of cirrhosis, it won’t counteract the harm ful effects of excessive alcohol intake or the damage that results from being ov erweight or obese.
