I have a confession to make. I’m cheap. If I can find a way to do something cheaper I will.

When I hear about people calling someone like Geek Squad or the like, I cringe.

The majority of computer work is nothing more than brain power. It is one person putting their time and knowledge into your machine. When we pay someone to fix something, we are paying for their knowl-

edge.

I’m a huge buy local supporter. I have owned a small business, work in one now and have friends and family who own small businesses.

So that is why I am writing this column. The next time you have a computer problem and cannot fix it yourself — buy local!

Call the local Chamber of Commerce and ask them about a reputable, small, locally-owned company and use them.

There is a huge chance that it is going to be cheaper than a national company. The one thing to remember about using a local company is that you are generally paying for one

person’s time. National companies charge so much because you have to pay the employee, managers, upper management, etc.

Why pay all that when a local person uses your money to put their kids through school or put food on the table.

They will more than likely give you a better turnaround time. They are dependent on that income.

The small business owner is going to work like crazy to meet deadlines because they need the money.

They usually guarantee their work.

Small business owners depend on the community they live in. If you take a computer to a small repair

shop and they do not fix it, you are going to tell everyone how horrible they are.

Next thing you know, that small repair shop is out of business. However, if you talk about how wonderful they are, your friends are likely to use them, too.

Use someone who will care about you and your circumstances and not just your money.

FISHING REPORT LAKE MURRAY: White perch: Very good. Lake World reports that the white perch bite is still on fire, with anglers catching fish anywhere from 5-40 feet of water. Fish are schooled up near the bottom, and for the shallower areas worms are working better while in deeper water jigging spoons have been the best bet.

Bream: Good. Lake World reports that smaller bluegills are hanging around shallow cover, although better bluegill have been hard to locate. However, the shellcracker bite is strong fishing worms on the bottom in 4-8 feet of water.

Catfish: Fair to good. Captain Chris Simpson reports that the most productive method for catching channel catfish remains anchoring on humps and points and fan-casting dip baits, shrimp and cut herring. Target ledges that allow baits to be scattered between depths of 5-30 feet. As water temperatures drop over the next few weeks the drift bite will improve, but for now it is still inconsistent.

Thursday Morning Quarterback

It’s ‘deja vu’’ all over again in Chronicle Country.

Back in 2002, Chapin and Batesburg­Leesville high schools started theseason with 6­0 marks.

At the time, both competed in Re­ gion 3­2A with another 6­0 team in Abbeville. Eventually, Abbeville defeated both the Eagles and Panthers to win the region title and advance to the Class 2A title game where it lost 21­19 to Carver’s Bay. Fast forward 14 years later and Chapin and Batesburg­ Leesville are once again undefeat­ ed after more than six weeks.

While both teams now compete in different classes, Batesburg­ Leesville again finds Abbeville standing in the way of perfection.

Through seven weeks, Chapin, Batesburg­Leesville and Airport re­ main the lone undefeated Chroni­ cle Country teams. Meanwhile, Lexington and River Bluff have run off six consecutive victories head­ ing into their region clash at Wild­ cat Stadium.

Zoo Fence A kangaroo kept getting out of his enclosure at the zoo. Knowing that he could hop high, the zoo officials put up a ten-foot fence. He was out the next morning, just sauntering around the zoo. A twenty-foot fence was put up. Again he go out.

When the fence was forty feet high, a camel in the next enclosure asked the kangaroo, “How high do you think they’ll go?”

The kangaroo said, “About a thousand feet, unless somebody locks the gate at night!”

“Sure,” I said. When the supply truck came every morning, the sergeant looked at me and said, “Hey, you. Pile it over there.”

Old Rivalry After 20 years two college rivals bumped into each other. “Do you remember how I used to be so fat and flabby?’ asked the first. “Well, I’ve been on an exercise program for a few years, and now I run marathons.”

“That’s great!” replied the other man.

“And,” the first man continued, “Do you remember how I used to be shy and a poor student? Well, I took a course in public speaking, and now I make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year on the lecture circuit.”

“That’s great!” came the reply.

“Oh, and how about you?” the first man asked.

“Have you changed at all?”

“Well, yes I have”, replied the second man. “Remember how brutally honest I used to be, and how when someone said something uninteresting, I would reply, ’I couldn’t care less?’”

“Well now I just say, ’That’s great!’”

‘Manche a gigot’ had a very distinct purpose

M

ade in France in the year 1872 and hallmarked by Christophle, this solid silver object offers a look into the dining room of over a century ago.

This lovely implement is most unusual in its function. Used primarily in France, this piece is considered an accolade of the well appointed formal dinner table.

Used as a holder for a leg of lamb, it allowed the meat to be easily and neatly sliced from the bone in an elegant, controlled manner.

You will notice the threaded post to one side which allows the bone end to be inserted allowing the attached silver handle to become securely affixed when this post is tightened.

Each place setting would have included

one of these implements. It was added to the outside edge next to the dinner knife.

Used in tandem, this was a neat and tidy way to consume the often slippery meat.

Demand was such that Christophle and other French silversmiths crafted these pieces in the fashionable patterns of the day.

The use of this implement remains a mostly French table custom and is still considered an irreplaceable object for its singular, intended function.
