ne of the biggest benefits to a smartphone is all of the applications it can have.

If you want your phone to do something, you can bet there’s an app for it.

Clocks and alarms I don’t own an alarm clock, and I rarely wear a watch these days.

Why would I? I carry my phone everywhere I go and it keeps perfect time. It will even tell me the time in any timezone in the world.

I also have an alarm set on my phone — three alarms, if I want to be perfectly honest.

Lake Murray water levels are down to 354.63 and dropping (full pool is 360.00), and water temperatures are around the midto upper-70s.

Clarity has been good.

In striped bass news, Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that as temperatures rebounded fish moved back out to deeper water and pulled out of the creeks, and he has found the most fish 30-50 feet down in about 50 feet of water at the mouth of creeks.

Down-lines have been the best way to target them.

There has been some isolated schooling action but it’s not like it was.

Researchers found that those wh o cycled to work had a 45% lower risk of cancer and a 46% reduced risk of heart disease compared to those with a “nonactive co mmute.” Walking to work was also linked to lower risk of heart disease but not cancer. West Columbia Mayor Bobby Horton agreed.

He said the venue for Rhythm on the River is one of the city’s most valued assets.

“Riverwalk and the amphitheater are a treasure for West Columbia,” Horton said. “Its benefits are countless.”

The next concert is at 3 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 15) and features Carolina South Acoustic.

“Rhythm on the River grows every year,” Pinner said. “People know it, and know about it, and they are going to come to the West Columbia Amphitheater for it.”

While procuring the music is a big part of Rhythm on the River, it does not hap-

pen without a lot of coordination.

Capt. John Norman of the West Columbia Police Department said his job, with his colleagues, is to protect and serve. And nowhere is that more apparent than at Rhythm on the River.

Police can offer emergency assistance and a medical response if needed, Norman said. And officers prepare

for the unexpected. They look to see if anything is out of place.

“There is a lot of planning that goes into working a public event,” Norman said.

“We know who is supposed to be there, and we keep our eyes open.”

Police are there to help, too.

“We want people to know they can approach us,” he said. “We are here to help.”

Hall of Horrors helps special needs children

The Cayce-West Columbia Junior Chamber is presenting a Hall of Horrors for Halloween.

It is the 38th year the junior chamber has offered a scary night out.

This year's attraction is titled “Mission: Survival Zombie Experience.”

Part of the Hall of Horrors experience incorporates groups of between two-and-five people. The team goes into a winding course that has a zombie apocalypse theme.

Team members are given a Nerf gun, a timer and a lantern in order to

defend themselves against the attacking zombies.

The mission is to find the doctor and an anecdote, then get out as quickly as they can.

Wife and husband Katie and Bryan Moore are the creators of the thrilling attraction.

"The Hall of Horrors has been wellreceived again this year," said Brian.

The Moores have been a part of the Cayce-West Columbia Junior Chamber and the Halloween attraction for seven years.

Remembering a war a world away

Vietnam veterans reunited in Chapin

For 27 years, a Vietnam veterans group has reunited to remember, share and celebrate.

The veterans of Delta Company, 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division epitomize patriotism, honor, valor and love of country, family and fellow man.

They have met annually in 12 locations, some more than once: Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Texas, North Carolina, Florida, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and twice in South Carolina, including this year in Chapin.

Ten years ago and this year, Chapin residents Lt. Col. (Retired) Ron and Carol Saxton hosted 25 veterans, 21 spouses and friends from 14 states.

The veterans were members of the rifle company he commanded as a captain February-September 1968.

They stayed in a local motel, played golf, visited Fort Jackson and took a pontoon tour of Lake Murray.

They say they are brothers and sisters. Their healing bond grows stronger.

They keep in touch with emails, cards and impromptu get togethers. They keep creating memories and great impressions wherever they go.

At dinner at the Carolina Ale House in Irmo, a stranger who had just returned from a mission trip struck up a conversation with them.

When they checked out, the restaurant manager told them another guest paid

They have written a big Thank You card for the stranger who the manager said is a frequent customer.

Don Dignan, retired accountant from Ford Motor Company, Livonia, MI, organized the first reunion back in 1990, with five or six attending.

Saxton said most are combat veterans of the 1968 Tet Offensive.

A few veterans who attended served in Viet Nam in 1969 and 1970.

Next year's reunion will be in New York.

One of the veterans present, Herford Clark, said he often thinks about his Vietnam buddies and the perils they went through.

“Our ranks keep thinning, losing six in less than the past two years, including one of our lieutenants in Columbia two weeks ago,” Saxton said.

Trimming things here and there: Small diet changes reap big results

hen it comes to our daily meal routine, change sometimes can be challenging.

Studies have shown that it takes between two to eight months to form a new habit.

You can create an eating style "habit" that can improve your health now and in the future by making small changes over time, such as eliminating sugary drinks and highsodium foods.

Consider making healthy changes that reflect your personal preferences, culture and traditions.

Think of each change as a "win" as you build positive habits and find solutions that reflect your new healthy eating style.

Use the tips below courtesy of My Plate (www. choosemyplate.gov/startsmall-changes) to find little victories that work for you!

Make half your plate fruits and veggies • Focus on whole fruits more often than drinking 100% juice.

• Snack on fresh, frozen, canned or dried fruits instead of cookies, brownies or other sugar-sweetened treats.

• Offer whole fruits without saturated fat, sodium or added sugars as dessert.

• Vary your vegetables to include green, red and orange choices.

• Add fresh, frozen or canned vegetables to salads, side dishes and recipes.

• Prepare your vegetables without sauces, gravies or glazes to lower the amount of sodium, saturated fat and added sugars.

‘... and no one’s been arrested’

8 years later, shooting victim’s mother still waits for answers

On Sept. 24, 2009, Debbie Powell received a phone call from someone telling her that her son, Andy, had been found dead in his home on Goodwin Road in Gaston and his prized dragon necklace was stolen.

“You give birth to this child and you raise them for 21 years,” Powell said.

“Then somebody goes in the house and they kill him, and nobody’s willing to come forward and tell what they know.

“That’s extremely heartbreaking.”

Though Powell couldn’t think of who would do that to her son, she thought the case would be solved within days.

“That didn’t happen,” Powell said. “Then a year went by, several years and now eight years. It’s a little bit scary to know that eight years has gone by and no one’s been arrested.”

However, Powell and Lt. Robby Lint agree it’s not for lack of trying.

Over the years, detectives have followed lead after lead, only for them to fall apart.

“We have followed up on every bit of that information as we’ve tried to find out who’s responsible for this crime,” Lint said “Unfortunately, we have had dead ends or the information didn’t pan out like we would like it to that’s resulted in us not being

After eight years without answers, it would be easy to assume Powell has lost faith. But just like a mother’s love, she said faith is unwavering.

When asked if she still has hope that the case of her son’s death will be solved, Powell responded with a calm assurance.

“Because I have confidence in the Sheriff’s Department…I have confidence that they will eventually find out who did

Recalling another mass killing that stunned Americans

t's difficult to fully wrap one's mind around this month’s Las Vegas shootings.

The scope of the carnage was overwhelming.

Yet horrifying crimes that target scores of innocent people are nothing new.

The husband accepted and minutes later the car was free.

The entire structure was eventually torn down and turned into Bath Memorial Park, where the school's original cupola stands in honor of those who died there.

Some victims were so poor, their families couldn't afford burial markers.

Stones were finally placed at the last of those unmarked graves in 2008.

As for Kehoe, his body was also buried in an unmarked grave in the pauper's section of a local cemetery.

His farm was plowed under, in case more explosives were buried beneath it.

None were found. The land is still farmed today, though the farmhouse was never rebuilt.

Kehoe didn't leave behind a suicide note.

But he did share a final morbid message.

When authorities arrived at his farm, they found a wooden sign attached to a fence containing these words: "Criminals are made, not born."

Andrew Kehoe's pathetic final days, and the misery he unleashed on so many innocent people, proved the saying's truth.

Manure will be obtained from agricultural animal producers and then provided to crop farmers to be land applied at agronomic rates as fertilizer. All farmers receiving waste must sign a contract, approved by the Department, and will be responsible for complying with all regulations for land application of agricultural waste.

Department of Health and Environmental Control (Department) becomes the final agency decision 15 days after notice of the Department decision has been mailed to the applicant or respondent, unless a written request for final review accompanied by a filing fee of $100.00 is filed with the Department by the applicant, permittee, licensee, or affected person.

2. Upon information and belief the Defendant, Stacy Gardiner, (hereinafter referred to as “Defendant Gardiner”) has a last known address which is in the County of Lexington, State of South Carolina 3. Upon information and belief the Defendant, Eric Hardenbrook, (hereinafter referred to as “Defendant Hardenbrook”) is a citizen and resident of Lexington County, South Carolina and has been so for more than three (3) months prior to the commencement of this action.

4. The Plaintiff and the Defendant Gardiner, are the biological parents of two children, Chad (age 4) and Parker (age 2). The Plaintiff and the Defendant Gardiner were never married.

The Plaintiff and the Defendant Gardiner do not expect any further children of their relationship.

5. The Plaintiff is informed and believes the Defendant Hardenbrook is the maternal Grandfather of the minor children involved in this case.

6. The Plaintiff is informed and believes the Defendant Hardenbrook and his now deceased wife, Marilyn Hardenbrook, were granted custody of the minor child, Chad in case number 2013-DR-40-1191 which was filed in Richland County. A copy of the Judicial Review Order

ending this case is attached to this Complaint and was filed on March 13, 2014, in the Office of the Clerk of Court of Richland County.

7. The Plaintiff is informed and believes following the issuance of the above referenced Order, the Plaintiff and the Defendant Gardiner resided together at the home of the Defendant Hardenbrook with the minor child, Chad.

8. The Plaintiff is informed and believes the minor child, Parker, was born on October 9, 2014, while the parties were all living at the home of the Defendant Hardenbrook.

9. The Plaintiff is informed and believes this living arrangement continued until the fall of 2015, when the Plaintiff and the minor children moved to a house he owns.

10. The Plaintiff is informed and believes the Defendant Hardenbrook’s wife passed away in January 2015.

11. The Plaintiff is informed and believes at the time he and the minor children moved from the Defendant Hardenbrook’s home, that the Defendant Gardiner 2 was in and out of the Defendant Hardenbrook’s home. The Plaintiff is informed and believes this erratic behavior on the part of the Defendant Gardiner was due to her drug use and addiction.

12. The Plaintiff is informed and believes the minor children have continuously resided in his sole care since October 2015.

13. The Plaintiff is informed and believes the Defendant Gardiner was in jail from November 2015 until March 2016. Further the Plaintiff is informed and believes since Defendant Gardiner’s release from jail she has sporadically visited with the minor children and last visited with the minor children in July 2016.

14. The Plaintiff is informed and believes the Defendant Hardenbrook does not object to the Plaintiff having custody of the minor child, Chad, and has in fact allowed and permitted the Plaintiff to have the sole care of Chad even though there is still in place an Order granting Defendant Hardenbrook custody of Chad.

15. The Plaintiff is informed and believes the Defendant Hardenbrook regularly visits with the minor children.

16. The Plaintiff is informed and believes he is the fit and proper person to have sole custody of the minor children as he has a home in which he lives with the children and is employed on a full-time basis with Wood Electric.

17. The Plaintiff is informed and believes there has been a material and substantial change of circumstances since the filing of the Order granting custody of the minor child, Chad, to the Defendant Hardenbrook and his now deceased wife.

18. The Plaintiff is informed and believes the material and substantial change of circumstances, include but are not limited to the following: a. The Plaintiff has had the minor child, Chad, as well as his sister, Parker in his sole continuous care since October 2015; b.

Younger folks and outsiders think losing traditions is good, but I disagree. As we lose traditions, we lose touch with our past, and if nothing else, a lot of traditions and customs made the good old days special.
