What is low memory and how can you fix it?

You keep getting a notice that the computer is low on memory.

Why is that important?

Your hard drive is NOT your memory. Another term for memory in a computer is RAM (pronounced ram). They are small sticks that your computer uses almost like your short-term

memory.

The computer accesses the memory to help run programs and store information until you save it to the hard drive.

Every computer program has a memory limit. It’s necessary to its function. If you do not have enough, it may crash.

If you have a new program and it is crashing and throwing a low memory error message, that means you do not have the necessary memory in your computer for that program.

Only two solutions here:

Acquire a different program or find someone to upgrade your memory.

Unless you know what you are doing, please do not open the computer and try to change the memory yourself.

You can easily short out other parts or kill your computer altogether.

If you have had the computer for a while and it starts giving you the low memory error, chances are, you have a virus.

Malware is well known for taking over computers and using all its resources for malicious intents. I urge you

FISHING REPORT LAKE MURRAY: White perch: Very good. Lake World reports that the white perch bite is still on fire, with anglers catching fish anywhere from 5-40 feet of water. Fish are schooled up near the bottom, and for the shallower areas worms are working better while in deeper water jigging spoons have been the best bet.

Bream: Good. Lake World reports that smaller bluegills are hanging around shallow cover, although better bluegill have been hard to locate. However, the shellcracker bite is strong fishing worms on the bottom in 4-8 feet of water.

Catfish: Fair to good. Captain Chris Simpson reports that the most productive method for catching channel catfish remains anchoring on humps and points and fan-casting dip baits, shrimp and cut herring. Target ledges that allow baits to be scattered between depths of 5-30 feet. As water temperatures drop over the next few weeks the drift bite will improve, but for now it is still inconsistent.

It’s now down to two.

When it comes to weeks in the regular season, it’s true for Class 2A’s Batesburg-Leesville and Class 3A teams Airport, BrooklandCayce, Gilbert and Swansea. All managed to avoid the postponements which resulted in other non-Class 4A schools pushing back a week their respective season finales.

Pelion and Chapin are both scheduled to play games in what is Week 11 for Class 4A. The Panthers will play host to Columbia on Nov. 5, while the Eagles will meet A.C. Flora the following night at Cecil Woolbright Stadium.

Chapin (7-0) and Airport (8-0) are Chronicle Country’s two remaining undefeated teams.

The Eagles of Chapin are three wins shy of becoming the sixth team in school history to go through the regular season without a loss.

Only the 1974 team, which was part of a 28-game winning streak, managed to run the table to win the state championship.

Meanwhile, the Eagles of West Columbia are looking to join the 2009 team as the school’s only undefeated regular season teams.

Coach Kirk Burnett’s team went 10-0 and advanced to the second round of the Class 3A playoffs before losing to Lake City.

Playing Doctor Two kids were trying to figure out what game to play.

One said, “Let’s play doctor.”

“Good idea.” said the other. “You operate, and I’ll sue.”

Phone Hostage My wife was away all weekend at a business conference.

During a break, she decided to call home collect.

Our six-year-old son picked up the phone and heard a stranger’s voice say, “We have a Betty on the line.

Will you accept the charges?”

Frantic, he dropped the receiver and came charging outside screaming, “Dad! They’ve got Mom! And they want money!”

Fitting Glasses The proprietor of a successful optical shop was instructing his son on how to charge a customer.

“After you have fitted the customer’s glasses,” he said, “and he asks you what the charge will be, you say, ’$100.’ Then see if he winces.

“If the customer doesn’t wince you say, ’For the frames. The lenses will be another $50.’

“If he still doesn’t wince you say firmly, ’Each.’

Sticky Problem A carpenter was called upon to put up a bulletin board in a church vestry.

Since the walls were

marble, he tried to glue the frame on the wall rather than nailing it, but ran into problems until he tried making the frame out of burr oak.

That adhered quite successfully, leading him to admonish his young assistant, “If it ain’t burr oak, don’t affix it.”

Bottom of the Barrel A C-141 transport aircraft was preparing for departure from a base in Thule, Greenland.

They had been waiting for the truck to arrive to pump out the aircraft’s sewage holding tank.

The Aircraft Commander was in a hurry, the truck was late in arriving, and the Airman performing the job was extremely slow in getting the tank pumped out.

The Aircraft Commander berated the Airman for his lack of speed and promised to pursue punitive action.

The Airman responded, “Sir, I have no stripes, it is 20 below zero, I am stationed in Thule, Greenland, and I am pumping sewage out of airplanes. Just what are you planning to do to punish me?”

Lost Child A six-year-old ran up and down the supermarket aisles shouting frantically, “Marian, Marian!”

Finally reunited with his mother, he was chided by her, “You shouldn’t call me “Marian.” I’m your mother, you know.”

“I know,” said the child, “but the store is full of mothers.”

Broccoli at Dinner We were dining at the home of a friend one evening when the hostess passed a bowl of broccoli to my husband.

“No, thanks,” he said.

“I’ve already had some.”

He quickly added, “I think I was eight or nine at the time.”

Programming Language Differences The proliferation of modern programming languages (all of which seem to have stolen countless features from one another) sometimes makes it difficult to remember what language you’re currently using. The same applies to Operating Systems.

OS/2 After fueling up with 6000 gallons of gas, you get in the car and drive to the store with a motorcycle escort and a marching band in procession. Halfway there, the car blows up, killing everybody in town.

Linux You get in the car and begin to drive to the store.

Halfway there, you realize that the steering wheel is missing and you submit a bug.

AS/400 An attendant locks you into the car and then drives you to the store, where you get to watch everybody else buy fillet mignons.

Served by Weight A man and his wife went out to dinner to a casual dining restaurant.

For dinner, they had ordered the chicken tenders plate.

When it arrived, the woman stopped the waitress. “Why do I have only 4 pieces when my husband has 5?”

“The dinners are served by weight,” replied the server.

“Weight???” asked the surprised woman. “No one weighed me when we came in!”

Macwich Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes Servings: 4

8 slices garlic bread, frozen

1 package Bob Evans Macaroni and Cheese

4 slices cheddar cheese 16 dill pickle chips (optional)

1 can tomato soup, prepared (optional for dipping) In large non-stick skillet over medium-low heat, heat 8 bread slices for 3 minutes and flip over to evenly warm through.

Prepare macaroni and cheese according to package directions.

Place 1/2 slice of cheddar cheese on each piece of garlic bread.

On 4 pieces of garlic bread, evenly spoon 4 ounces (about 1/2 cup) of macaroni and cheese on top of cheddar cheese/ garlic bread slices.

Place remaining 4 slices of garlic bread on top of macaroni and cheese stack.

Toast both sides for an additional 2 minutes or until bread is toasty brown and cheese is melted. Serve with dill pickle chips and tomato soup for dipping.

Orzo with Italian Sausage, Mushrooms and Spinach Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Serves: 4

4 tablespoons butter, divided

1 cup uncooked orzo pasta

1 can (14.5 ounces) low sodium chicken broth

1 pound hot or Italian sausage 1/2 cup diced onion

1 cup sliced mushrooms

1 tablespoon freshly minced garlic 10 ounces baby spinach 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese salt and pepper, to taste In a large sauce pan over medium-high heat, melt 2 tablespoons butter and add orzo. Stir until lightly browned. Add chicken broth and bring to boil. Cover. Reduce heat and simmer about 15 minutes, until orzo is tender and liquid is absorbed.

Meanwhile, in large skillet over medium heat, add sausage and crumble with potato masher until fully cooked, about 5 minutes.

Add onion and mushrooms, and continue to cook until onions are translucent and mushrooms are tender. Add garlic and saute 30 seconds or until garlic becomes fragrant.

Turn heat down to low. Add spinach and cover pan to allow spinach to wilt. Set aside until orzo is done.

When orzo is done, add sausage mixture and Parmesan cheese and mix well. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.

Mixed Berry Cobbler Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 1 hour, 30 minutes Serves: 6-8

1 package Bob Evans Glazed Apples

1 cup frozen sweet cherries

1 cup blackberries or raspberries

1 cup pear, diced Heat oven to 375 F. In large mixing bowl, mix together glazed apples and fruits.

Pour into 9-by-13-inch baking pan. Bake uncovered for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.

While fruit is baking, mix together ingredients for streusel.

Streusel Topping

1 cup packed light brown sugar

1 cup uncooked rolled oats 2/3 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon cinnamon

8 tablespoons (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces Mix together brown sugar, oats, flour and cinnamon until evenly combined. With fingertips, blend in butter pieces until small clumps form and butter is well incorporated, about 2 minutes.

Sprinkle topping evenly over fruit and place back in oven uncovered. Bake until streusel is lightly browned and fruit is tender, about 30 minutes.

Remove from oven and let set 5 minutes before serving.

Rare, female silversmith created works of art

T

his remarkably beautiful silver chocolate pot was made in the late 18th century by female, English silversmith Hester Bateman.

Female silversmiths were rare in the 18th century. Her skill and attention to detail remain the hallmarks of her body of work. Many of her pieces were made for English royalty and are found in important silver collections around the globe.

The chocolaTe poT pictured here is a special vessel crafted for the service of a rare and wonderful 18th century treathot chocolate! At the time of manufacture, the only way to have such a luxury would be to combine rare sugar, rough chopped chocolate placed inside the pot and then covered with steamed milk.

Silver is very reactive, so the hot metal would instantly absorb the heat of the milk and help to melt the chocolate. The pot would be held and swirled around to incorporate each ingredient with the others.

The end result would be a luxurious fluid reserved for those of wealth and taste.

The hot chocolate mixture would have been poured into small cups as this was a rare and delectable treat. It was served in the library or gathering rooms of large houses of the period.

The concert will be held at the Guignard Brickworks Development (180 Knox Abbott Drive) in Cayce, near the Blossom St. Bridge, and will be raising funds for the Central Carolina Community Foundation’s SC Flood Relief Fund.
