a kosher butcher shop in Newark to the impossibly beautiful campus of a prestigious Midwestern college, Marcus (Logan Lerman) has come far.

It's 1951, and the Korean War rages in the news, but studious and introverted Marcus only has eyes for the stunning Olivia (Sarah Godon).

He loses himself in her deep blue eyes and winsome smile, despite red flags that she has mental-health troubles.

Though he's the first to go to college from his Jewish family, Marcus is distinctly nonreligious, one thing which sets him at odds with the creeptastic dean (Tracy Letts).

The most notable thing up front is the film's visual aesthetic.

You could say it's nostalgic, but so much of it has hints of the uptight, constraining nature of the period that Marcus bumps up against.

It's enough to keep you aware that you're in a different world.

A love story behind Taos Pueblo walls MacLeod and Jerry Bellune love traveling together and spending their children’s inheritance. This is an account of their travel to the Southwest and back on blue highways, not interstates.

Who doesn’t love a love story? You have to be hardhearted and bitter not to.

As MacLeod and I walked around the Taos Pueblo village, we didn’t expect to find a love story as we stopped in shops operated by their native owners.

The tribal Pueblo residents make and sell mica-flecked pottery and silver jewelry and hand-made moccasins and drums.

Few have any signs out front. They just open their doors to customers and work on the native crafts they make and sell.

They offer no pressure to buy or even show much interest in selling anything.

MacLeod found dried corn strung into necklaces that she bought to take home to friends.

She talked with one craftsman who was making jewelry while they chatted.

He told her he learned it from his father, a self-taught artist. When she asked the source of his inspiration, he pointed to a framed photograph of his father.

We stepped into another shop owned by Owee Rae Reid, an enchanting young jewelry maker herself.

MacLeod bought one of her amulets designed to ward off evil spirits.

The amulet is supposed to remind you of those you love and connect you with your own inner spirit.

Owee showed us photos of her “loved one.” His name is Robert Mirabel.

Robert is an award-winning native American musician and flute maker. His work is featured in the Smithsonian Museum’s Native American collection.

He performs worldwide, sharing flute songs, tribal dance and storytelling.

He was twice named the Native American Music Awards’ Artist of the Year, and Songwriter of the Year award three times.

When we left her shop, Owee gave me a hug.

She probably thought of me as grandfatherly with a bald head and aged face.

There were even a few tiny eateries too small to be called cafes operated by their cook owners.

They are more like small, walk-in kitchens where the hostess is cooking several dishes on her stove.

Tribal life On our guided tour we learned more about the village and how it operates.

The Pueblo land covers 99,000 acres and the village sits at an elevation of 7,200 feet above sea level.

That’s more than twice as high as Sassafras Mountain, the highest point in South Carolina, and 1,200 feet higher than North Carolina‘s Mount Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi River.

Tradition dictate that no electricity or running water is allowed. Most members live in conventional homes outside the village but occupy their Pueblo houses for special occasions and to plant and harvest crops.

Although many gifted artists run their own businesses here, others are employed in Taos

The council also appoints a war chief and staff to deal with the protection of the mountains and Indian lands outside the Pueblo walls.

Their sacred Blue Lake is one of their concerns.

The single most dramatic event in the tribe’s recent history is the 1970 return of 48,000 acres of mountain land including the sacred Blue Lake.

The tribe’s future The Taos Pueblo is a sovereign nation within the United States. It preserves ancient traditions in spite of “modernization.”

Tribal leaders say they are encouraged by an increased population of tribal members choosing to live here.

Taos has been declared a National Historic landmark and was admitted to the World Heritage Society

The Taos Pueblo is well worth a visit if you are traveling in the Southwest.

It is open to visitors daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except when tribal rituals require closing. In winter to early spring the Pueblo closes for about 10 weeks.

After 10 weeks, the weather truly matched the football season.

Windy, chilly temperatures finally arrived just as the action is starting to heat up.

With three weeks left in the regular season, Dutch Fork, Gilbert and W.W. King Academy remain in the exclusive undefeated club at 8-0.

The Silver Foxes are off to their best start ever under head coach Tom Knotts, who’s renowned for his legendary winning streak at Independence High School in Charlotte.

This Friday against Pelion, the Indians look to extend their longest winning streak and best start ever.

Meanwhile, the King Academy Knights look to wrap up their first undefeated regular season and win nine games in a row for the first time since 2000. Because of the cancellation of the Oct. 7 contest against Northside Christian Academy, this Friday’s game at Richard Winn marks their final game before the start of the 8-man playoffs.

Speaking of wrapping up, Dutch Fork, Gilbert and Batesburg-Leesville can clinch shares of region titles this week. On the flip side, the inaugural season for Northside Christian Academy ends Friday at Laurens Academy.

Homemade microwave meals save time

I

've found that using my microwave oven saves hours of time and keeps my kitchen clean and cool.

The history of the microwave oven goes back to 1946, when Dr. Percy Spencer, an electronics genius and war hero, was touring one of the laboratories at the Raytheon Company.

The company was testing a vacuum tube called a magnetron, the power tube that drives a radar set. As Dr. Percy stood in front of the "radar box," a candy bar in his pocket melted.

Dr. Percy tried other experiments with food, including using popcorn kernels. He designed a metal box around the magnetron with microwave power.

Engineers developed and refined the idea, and the first commercial microwave oven hit the market in 1947.

However, initial response was not very good, and it wasn't until 1975 that a microwave oven was created for the consumer kitchen.

I encourage you to read the instruction book that came with your microwave oven. It's the easiest way to find out how to successfully use all of its functions.

My microwave has all of the typical functions, but I especially love the warming oven feature. It cycles on and off so that I can hold dinner for my husband when he's running late, or keep a casserole dish warm during the holidays.

You can use your microwave to prepare everything from appetizers to desserts.

It's energy efficient, as it won't heat up your kitchen, and also helps to retain more nutrients in your foods.

In some cases, a microwave is the best way to cook a dish, especially with vegetables, giving them a better taste and texture.

When cooking on any power level other than HIGH, the oven cooks by cycling power on and off, so the energy has a chance to move through the food without overcooking it.

Medium and Low power are generally used to soft-

en, melt and defrost foods, while HIGH is usually used for cooking. Carefully follow the recipe when using your microwave, and you'll have beautifully cooked meals each time!

This recipe for Quick Stuffed Bell Peppers is easy to assemble and cooks in minutes. This dish freezes well, so double the recipe, and when you're pressed for time, you'll have a homemade, microwave meal in minutes.

QUICK STUFFED BELL PEPPERS • 8 bell peppers, tops removed and cut into a small dice, white membrane and seeds removed and discarded • 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese, divided • 1 pound lean ground beef or turkey • 5 crackers, crushed into fine crumbs

• 1 egg, slightly beaten • 1 (3-ounce) package dehydrated onion soup mix • 1 tablespoon steak sauce • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon black pepper

Tomato Sauce Topping: • 8 ounces tomato sauce • 2 tablespoons salsa • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon black pepper • 2 tablespoons brown sugar

1. Using a large bowl, gently mix together the diced pepper tops, 1/2 cup of cheese, ground meat, crackers, egg, soup mix, steak sauce, Worcestershire sauce, salt and black pepper.

2. Stuff the prepared peppers with the ground meat mixture and stand them upright in a lightly greased 12-by-8-by-2-inch baking dish. Combine the tomato sauce, salsa, salt, pepper

Adventurer celebrates centennial

Paul Sturtevant smiles as his wife, Anna Sturtevant, wraps her arms around the man she’s loved for 75 years recently. Because Anna worked at Paul’s business, the couple has spent nearly every second of every day together since they married. His son, George Sturtevant, said, “They’ve always been there for us,” George said. “They’re hard-working people who put up with a lot from me.” The Sturtevants celebrated Paul’s 100th birthday on Saturday, Oct. 14, at Carolina Gardens, sharing stories and giving advice on how to handle life.

When Paul Sturtevant was born, women had no voting rights.

One hundred years later, many things have changed but Paul's outlook is as bright as ever.

Surrounded by friends and family, he celebrated his 100th birthday Friday at Carolina Gardens in Lexington.

And he reflected on what he called a wonderful life.

Places to go Before moving to Lexington, Paul and his wife Anna lived in the Lake Okeechobee area of Florida for 30 years after moving from Halifax, Mass.

Leaving Halifax was the end of an age for the family.

"The Sturtevant family had lived in Halifax for 200 years until he left," said George Sturtevant, Paul and Anna's son. "It's amazing if you think about it."

In Halifax, Paul made a name for himself as owner of an ice and fuel oil business.

More than just an entrepreneur, his daughter Dianne said he was an innovator.

"He was the first in the area who offered a coin-operated machine that vended ice," she said. "Dad was also the first in the area to install a fuel-oil system that delivered oil from a central point to more than 400 homes."

People came from all over the area to take a look at the system.

Once their children were gone, the Sturtevants moved to Florida to live the leisurely life.

A wonderful life Paul and Anna raised three children; Dianne, Donna and George. They have given them eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Their children are incredibly thankful to have been a part of the ride.

"I'm so fortunate to have been raised in this family," Dianne said. "It's been a wonderful life."

Her brother was just as grateful.

"They've always been there for us," George said. "They're

Largely reflective on his birthday, Mr. Sturtevant summed up his life so far in 10 words.

"It's been all about work, play, travel," Paul said. "It's been beautiful."

"She's put up with me for 75 years," Paul said with a chuckle. "She's struggling for the 76th."

"It's been very interesting," Anna said.

"For his 65th birthday, he wanted to come south — because we were snowbirds

— on a motorcycle," she said. "And the one provision I made was, 'I'll do, but no I-95 route.' Instead, we did all the barrier islands."

Even more impressive is the fact that the Sturtevants, in their 60s, didn't spend a single night in a hotel on their 1,400-mile trip. They slept in a tent each night from beginning to end.

The family once drove from Massachusetts to South America to see a family friend. Paul's fun-seeking outlook on life is his No. 2 piece of life advice for others.

"You have to make life an adventure," Paul said. "Make memories and have fun."

His top advice, however, is to pray.

"Prayer is about the best thing I can think of," he said. "'Bless us and help us remember to help others.'"

‘African Silver’ fork now tells its story in national museum

T

he simple silver fork pictured here was made in America before the turn of the 19th century. Wrought of coin silver, it appears before us in the iconic early pattern known as “fiddle.” It is well-balanced as early , hand-wrought pieces can be. Ease of use is implied through it’s undecorated, austere design.

Ownership of a fork such as this was reserved for those with enough extra coins to melt to craft them. This fork is approximately seven inches long, the ideal size to use daily yet small enough to be made portable for use when traveling. At this time in history, cutlery was not owned by everyone, let alone fine silver pieces such as this example. Traveling with your silver was an accepted practiceby those of greater means.

This piece came from a home on State Street in West Columbia. How it made it to this location and traveled through four or five generations of a family before I purchased it is a mystery. We will likely never know the exact pathway the fork took through South Carolina history. We will likely never know the precise story hidden on its glowing surface.

Deepening the mystery are the words written on the back. Stated very clearly in the manner used by early silversmiths—two simple words— ”African Silver”.” This fork has been studied by leading experts in America and Europe, as well as myself, all having never seen another.

It was concluded by all that this rare and wonderful piece may very well be the only one like it known in America.

Beginning on September 17, with the opening of the Smithsonian’s African American Musuem, this fork is on permanent loan for thousands of people to see and learn from. It was donated with the idea of its story continuing in the hearts of all who see it. several early silversmiths in America were known to employ and apprentice African Americans, teaching them the skills that would have evolved into the creation of a fork such as this. Having no hallmark of their own, the use of the words “African Silver” on the reverse would have indicated the special and precise origin of its maker.

I dare say the aritistic hands that crafted this fork could never have imagined it would one day have a place on the world stage. It represents South Carolina and captures the ideals of this early time and interpersonal relationships as few pieces ever will.

Jesse James’ death was just the start

A

pril 3, 1882, was a bad day for Jesse James. A very bad day, in fact.

I’ve always been intrigued by his shooting.

It happened in St. Joseph, Missouri, the city where I was born. St. Joe, which was the eastern terminus of the Pony Express, calls itself the place “where the Pony Express began and Jesse James ended.”

when the body was on public display … my family’s only connection to that grisly time.

(At least, as far as the old folks ever told us. Unpleasant things weren’t talked about back then.)

I don’t have a rosy, romanticized view of Jesse James.

He put innocent men in the ground and stole money from innocent people. Murderous thievery, regardless of the motivation, doesn’t make one a hero.

Still, there was a sad quality to the way his life ended and an odd poetic justice for the man who dispatched him to the Great Hereafter, too.

Let me tell you about it.

The heat was on back in the early spring of 1882, so Jesse and family were laying low in a plain little house on Lafayatte Street in St. Joe. He rented it under the name Mr. Howard, an alias he had used before.

The James Gang had fallen on hard times, and Jesse was trying (in modern terminology) to “put the band back together” for a criminal comeback. But with many old members dead or in prison, it was time for new blood.

Brothers Bob and Charley Ford were handsome men in their early 20s. They were also snakes. For while they were worming their way into Jesse James’ world, they

were also secretly negotiating with Missouri’s governor for the $5,000 reward on James’ head.

A deal was cut: kill James and get the cash, plus a full pardon.

April 3, 1882, was an unusually warm Monday. After finishing breakfast in the little

rented house, James noticed a picture was hanging crooked on a wall. With his guns resting on a nearby table, he was straightening it when Bob Ford shot him from behind.

Jesse James was no hero; but shooting an unarmed man from behind was the ultimate in cowardice. Conspiring to

collect $5,000 for it added a Judas Iscariot dimension, too.

But while Jesse James’ story was over, Bob and Charley Ford’s tale was just beginning.

They wired the governor to collect their ill-gotten gain, then turned themselves in to authorities.

Imagine their surprise when they were indicted for murder, tried, found guilty and sentenced to hang — in just one day.

Two hours later, the governor spared them from the gallows with a full pardon.

But he ripped them off on the reward by paying only $500, a far cry from the $5,000 they were promised.

(Thievery wasn’t limited to outlaws back then.)

It was all downhill from there for the Brothers Ford.

Killing a celebrity made them celebrities, but in a bad way.

Bob was viewed much like John Wilkes Booth, who also shot Lincoln from behind.

Even people who loathed Jesse James felt he didn’t deserve an ending like that.

Bob and Charley tried to cash in on their new-found fame. Bob posed for pictures in cheap arcades, a forerunner to Pay Per View. The brothers re-enacted the shooting on stage, but the audience’s dislike of them and their inability to act doomed the show.

Two years later, Charley, rid-

dled with tuberculosis and addicted to morphine because of the pain, committed suicide.

Bob Ford stumbled from job to job. He opened a saloon in New Mexico Territory, tried his hand at being a policeman in Las Vegas, and finally wound up in Colorado where he opened another saloon/ casino.

When it burned down, he reopened in a tent. Then it was on to yet another saloon in yet another town.

He was working in it on June 8, 1892 when a man walked in and said, “Hello Bob.” As he turned around, Edward O’Kelly fired both barrels of a double barrel shotgun, killing Ford instantly.

O’Kelly became known as “The Man who killed the man who killed Jesse James,” until he himself was killed in 1904 while trying to shoot a policeman in Oklahoma City.

And so the bloody string of inter-connected killings finally ended. It just goes to show you never know what chain of events your actions can set in motion, nor can you predict how and when they will stop.

The long, deadly path that produced such a high body count started 134 years ago this month in that little frame house in St. Joseph, Missouri with a betrayal by a supposed friend.

They told him, “Before you meet with God, I should tell you we’ve looked over your life, and to be honest, you really didn’t do anything particularly good or bad. We’re not really sure what to do with you. Can you tell us anything you did that can help us make a decision?”

The newly arrived soul thought for a moment and replied, “Yeah. Once, I was driving along and came upon a person who was being harassed by a group of thugs.

“So I pulled over, got out a bat, and went up to the

leader of the thugs. He was a big, muscular guy with a ring pierced through his lip.

“Well, I tore the ring out of his lip, and told him he and his gang had better stop bothering this guy or they would have to deal with me!”

“Wow that’s impressive,” they replied. “When did this happen?”

“About three minutes ago,” came the reply.

A dog was ambling down the street and saw the sign.

He looked at it for a moment, pulled it down with his mouth, and walked into the manager’s office, making it clear he wished to apply for the job.

The office manager laughed and said, “I can’t hire a dog for this job.”

The dog pointed to the line: “An equal opportunity employer.”

So the manager said, “OK, take this letter and type it.”

The dog went off to the word processor and returned a minute later with the finished letter, perfectly formatted.

The manager said, “Alright, here’s a problem.

Write a computer program for it and run it.”

Fifteen minutes later, the dog came back with the correct answer.

The manager still wasn’t convinced. “I still can’t hire you for this position. You’ve got to be bilingual.”

The dog looked up at the manager and said, “Meow.”

To be six again A man asked his wife what she’d like to do for her birthday.

“I’d love to be six again,” she replied.

On the morning of her birthday, he got her up bright and early and took her to a local theme park.

He put her on every ride

in the park: the Death Slide, the Screaming Loop, the Wall of Fear — everything there was.

Five hours later, she staggered out of the theme park, her head reeling and her stomach upside down.

The couple then wandered right into McDonald’s, where the husband ordered a Big Mac along with extra fries and a refreshing chocolate shake for his wife.

Then it was off to a movie — the latest Star Wars epic — where they ate hot dogs, popcorn, M&Ms and drank soda.

Finally, she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed onto the bed.
