Another 3.8 million South Carolinians did not travel, but saw the eclipse where they live.

Back to basics: Shepherd’s Center fall smartphone classes begin

exington’s Shepherd’s Center started their fall classes last week.

Once again I met lovely people and heard what they want to learn about.

Here’s a sample of what they learned.

WiFi vs. Mobile Everyone seemed curious about wifi.

What is it and why should you use it on your smartphone?

Wifi is a wireless connection to the internet. It is localized to the business or place where you are.

If the company or home owner has an internet connection and wireless router, then you can access wifi.

A lot of businesses these days will offer free wifi.

The reason you’ll want to be on wifi is because then you don’t run up your data charge to your cell phone account.

Most cell phone companies only offer so much data before they either cut you off or slow your connection drastically.

When you connect to someone’s wifi, you are then using their internet services over your own data plan. This will help curb what you use and hopefully keep that cell phone bill low.

Location Your cellphone is setup to transmit your location to various applications and companies.

Sound scary? It isn’t as bad as it seems.

It is how your maps

program knows where the phone is located. That lets your camera tag your photos with where they were taken.

It lets your weather app tell you the weather where you are.

You can turn it off. Many

people, like me, only turn on location services when I need to use my maps application and then I promptly turn it off.

The reason is data use and battery drain.

Your app works constantly. It is always looking at

The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels have stabilized around 355.18 (full pool is 360), and water temperatures have fallen into the mid70s.

Overall, the lake is pretty clear, but there are some areas where the wind has really stirred up the silt and stained it. The river is pretty dirty.

Bass are in a transition period, and veteran tournament angler Captain Doug Lown reports that with days getting shorter — as well as weather changes — bait seems to be starting to move into the creeks in a typical fall move.

Fish are transitioning out of their summer pattern and getting shallower. They are in different places than 4-6 weeks ago, around the time that the

FLW Championship was here, and Doug says that a lot of fish are in the last places they go before transitioning to the bank.

Instead of being in 18-20 feet of water, now they are more likely to be found in 8-13 feet.

While fish can still be caught in some of the same places as during the Cup, they are more likely to be smaller ones.

But until the lake turns over fish will be chasing bait/suspending and so throwing something like a Pop-R that can cover water is a good bet.

While fish are headed towards the bank, many are holding in the middle of bays and pockets as where a drain runs back into a cove.

Others are relating to subtle underwater points.

Instead of positioning your boat where you can cast onto the bank try staying two casts off of it.

Dropping water levels before the storm is another reason fish have been hesitant to get close to the bank.

For the last couple of years, most of the big fish have been caught shallow on buzzbaits. If you like fishing this way try throwing a small buzzbait or a floating worm in about 3-6 feet of water slightly off the bank.

On the striped bass side, Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that from Burton Point to Dreher Island there has been a lot of schooling activity. Fish seem to be related to the channel, and it seems as if their positioning has a lot to do

where you are.

The drain on your battery and data use adds up quickly.

On Androids, move your finger from the top of the screen down and pull down your notification bar.

The location icon looks like a bubble with a sharp point at the bottom. Tap on it. When it goes black, you’ve turned it off.

If you can’t find it, tap the little gear at the top of the notification bar and go to your settings page.

On this menu you’ll find the Location where you can turn it off or decide which apps can use it.

For iPhones you’ll want to find your Settings icon.

Once you’ve brought up your settings page, find Privacy. And within Privacy is Location Services. Here you can turn it off or decide which apps can use it.

Since SCE&G stopped pulling water to lower the lake before the storm, it seems like fish have started heading back into the creeks, after briefly backing up when they were pulling last week. There are still some fish in the extreme lower pool.

While fish can be caught in 30-40 feet on downlines or on free-lines, right now it seems that the best fish are being caught schooling.

It's a random bite and fish could come up in the morning, mid-day or evening, but if you stick with it in areas where bait is present, they will come up.

On the crappie front, Brad says that fish are starting to bite over 15-20 foot brush at the mouths of creeks.

The availability of the EA for public review was announced via notice in the following newspaper(s): The Lexington County Chronicle and Dispatch-News on August 17, 2017 and August 24, 2017. A 14-day comment period was announced in the newspaper notice(s).

The EA was also available for public review at the USDA Rural Development office and website as well as Swamp Fox Solar, LLC offices. There were no comments received during the 14-day comment period.

Based on its EA, commitments made by RBS, and public comments received, RBS has concluded that the project would have no significant impact (or no impacts) to water quality, wetlands, floodplains, land use, aesthetics, transportation, or human health and safety.

The proposed project will have no adverse effect on resources listed or eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The Agency has also concluded that the proposed project is not likely to affect federally listed threatened and endangered species or designated critical habitat thereof. The proposed project would not disproportionately affect minority and/or lowincome populations.

No other potential significant impacts resulting from the proposed project have been identified.

Therefore, RBS has determined that this FONSI fulfills its obligations under the National Environmental Policy Act, as amended (42 U.S.C. 4321 et seq.), the Council on Environmental Quality Regulations (40 CFR §§ 1500-1508), and USDA Rural Development’s Environmental Policies and Procedures (7 CFR Part 1970) for its action related to the project. RBS is satisfied that the environmental impacts of the proposed project have been adequately addressed. RBS’s federal action would not result in significant impacts to the quality of the human environment, and as such it will not prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for its action related to the proposed project.

Quarterback 2017 season hits critical point at Week 7

It’s make or break time in the high school football season.

Week 7 has many fans in “Seventh Heaven” with critical region matchups which could determine who finishes on top and plays its first two playoff games at home.

There are four such matchups in Chronicle Country.

In Gilbert, the Indians (60, 1-0) look to remain the lone undefeated Lexington County team when they host Brookland-Cayce.

It was the Bearcats (5-1, 1-0) who handed the then-8-0 Indians their first loss last season. Can they repeat that on a Gilbert team 7-0 at home under head coach Chad Leaphart?

Just a few miles down the road, Batesburg-Leesville plays host to Barnwell. It’s a rematch of last year’s Class 2A final won by the B-L Panthers. The Warhorses won the regular season title, while the Panthers finished fourth and won four straight road playoff games.

Coached by former River Bluff assistant Dwayne Garrick, Barnwell (7-0, 2-0) has allowed just 40 points in winning its first eight games.

Batesburg-Leesville (3-3, 1-0) looks to move above the .500 mark for the first time this season.

In Irmo, front-runner and undefeated Spring Valley (6-0, 2-0) visits W.C. Hawkins Stadium to face Irmo (5-2, 1-2).

The Vikings are tied for Region 5-5A first place with Dutch Fork, which they face Oct. 20 on the road. After a 4-0 start, the Yellow Jackets are tied with River Bluff and Blythewood for the final playoff spot in the region.

were also dealing with my brother who fights drug addiction.

This book was a lifechanger for me at the right time.

It was an important time of self-realization of what I need to change in my own life and what to totally let go of.

I also sought the help of a counsellor who had The Counsellor living in his life.

It was up to me to develop skills to move ahead and stop trying to fix an unfixable mess.

Chapin’s music (and arts) man

The Coffee Shelf's owner Jerry Caldwell is bringing art and music to Chapin.

Caldwell, a former electrical engineer, Marine and aerospace industry salesmen, has found his niche in the world of coffee, lattes, books, and organizing festivals.

Caldwell noticed many community art and music festivals and wanted Chapin to have one.

In 2016, he organized his first Chapin Fall Art Festival.

“This is a sophisticated community,” Caldwell said.

“Hundreds of people came to enjoy the artists, food, music and more.

“It was a success,” Caldwell said, “The public embraced it.”

This year he plans the 2nd annual Chapin Art Festival Oct 21, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Caldwell moved to Chapin seven years ago and wanted to get involved in the community. His wife’s family had lived in Chapin.

They visited often and fell in love with the area.

He dreamed of owning and running his own business.

“I was making a lot of money," he said.

"It didn’t feel complete.

and coffee were a successful combination. “I wanted to go into business replicating success, not inventing success.”

The Coffee Shelf sells lattes, coffee, tea and pastries, and his bookshelves are full of books by wellknown authors and books for children.

Caldwell said, “Too many coffee houses wait for you to order, expecting you to be the latté expert, but we prefer to interact with you. I am thrilled for customers to come and hang out and stay.”

A local knitting group from a local church made The Coffee Shelf a place to enjoy fellowship, yarn and coffee.

As for future festival plans, he would like to organize a music festival in the spring. He’d also love to backpack in the French Alps and in Tibet.

Coffee and books will continue to play an important part in his life.

“We each have our escape, and mine is to read a book," he said.

"Everything else fades away.”

University’s Launch! program helping ministries, Christian businesses flourish

ast week, I told you about the challenges Christian business entrepreneurs face as they work to build and grow successful businesses that follow biblical principles of fair, honest and mutually beneficial trade.

Launch! is a new ministry of CIU developed specifically to assist those in our area who want to start or need help growing a biblicallybased business or ministry.

It also gives CIU’s business students practical experience for when they enter the workforce or incubate their own business ventures.

“Developing ministering professionals” is how Scott Adams, the Director of CIU’s School of Business, likes to describe the Launch! program.

Adams envisioned the idea of a biblically-based entrepreneurship center after helping form several ministry organizations as part of a CIU business law class he taught.

Welcome back autumn with a healthy dose of pumpkin

know that fall and harvest time are finally here when the colors in the produce section are dominated by warm yellows, dark vibrant greens and rich orange pumpkin colors.

Pumpkins are the ambassadors of autumn, ushering in the holiday season and the promise of cooler days and nights.

The pumpkin plant originated in Central America and was introduced to the Pilgrims by the Native Americans. Pumpkins provide a hefty source of vitamin A, as well as one of the tastiest forms of goodfor-you fiber.

The gorgeous orange color is an indicator of beta carotene, also found in carrots, beets and sweet potatoes. Pumpkin seeds are rich in protein, minerals and fiber.

The seeds also have a rich, buttery taste that lends itself well to pestos, salad toppings or as a healthy snack.

I like using pumpkin to update traditional recipes, like this modern version of Beef and Pumpkin Stew.

If you’re having a busy week, you can make this crowd-pleasing stew the night before in a slow cooker. Time in the refrigerator allows the spices to infuse the dish and the flavors to deepen.

Reheat it as needed, and serve the next day with a flavorful Kale and Brussels Sprouts Salad and a crusty loaf of warm bread.

It’s a wonderful way to

• 2 tablespoons olive or canola oil • 1 beef top round steak (1½ pounds), cut into 1-inch cubes • 1 ½ teaspoons salt • 1 ½ teaspoons ground black pepper • 1 teaspoon chili powder • 1 tablespoon tomato paste • 1 ½ cups cubed peeled pie pumpkin (such as a Jarrahdale, Blue Hubbard or sugar pumpkin) • 3 small red potatoes, peeled and cubed • 1 cup (1 medium-large) peeled and cubed sweet potato • 1 medium onion, chopped • 2 garlic cloves, chopped • 2 cans (14 ½ ounces each) reduced-sodium beef broth • 1 can (14 ½ ounces) diced or crushed tomatoes (fire roasted or with bell peppers, if available), undrained • 2 bay leaves • 1 tablespoon steak sauce • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg or allspice • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper

It’s a Dog’s Life Thank God! A woman was at work when she received a phone call that her daughter was very sick with a fever. She left her work and stopped by the pharmacy to get some medication for her daughter.

When returning to her car, she found that she had locked her keys inside. She was in a hurry to get home to her sick daughter.

She didn’t know what to do, so she called her home and told the baby sitter what had happened and that she did not know what to do. The baby sitter told her that her daughter was getting worse.

She said, “You might find a coat hanger and use that to open the door.”

The woman looked around and found an old rusty coat hanger that had been thrown down on the ground, possibly by someone else who at some time or other had locked their keys in their car.

Then she looked at the hanger and said, “I don’t know how to use this.”

So she bowed her head and asked God to send her some help. Within five minutes an old rusty car pulled up, with a dirty, greasy, bearded man who was wearing an old biker skull rag on his head.

The woman thought, “This is what you sent to help me?” But, she was desperate, so she was also very thankful.

The man got out of his car and asked her if he could help. She said, “Yes, my daughter is very sick.

I stopped to get her some medication and I locked my keys in my car. I must get home to her. Please, can you use this hanger to unlock my car?”

He said, “Sure”. He walked over to the car, and in less than one minute the

car was opened.

She hugged the man and through her tears she said, “Thank You So Much! You are a very nice man.”

The man replied, “Lady, I am not a nice man. I just got out of prison today. I was in prison for car theft and have only been out for about an hour.”

The woman hugged the man again and with sobbing tears cried out loud, “Oh, Thank you God! You even sent me a Professional!”

But city leaders realized something else: “Barbara Fritchie” was good for business. Tourists came to town, eager to see where the famous confrontation took place.

Her name adorned products and tourist-related services. Frederick’s movers and shakers quietly adopted a “Don’t kill the goose that laid the golden egg” attitude.

Thus when President Franklin Roosevelt brought Britain’s visiting Winston Churchill there in 1943, (stunning FDR by reciting all 60 lines of the poem from memory), it was Barbara Fritchie’s name that Churchill spoke, not Mary Quantrill’s.

And so the poem still reads today. Some locals in Frederick would like to see Quantrill get some type of recognition, be it a marker at her gravesite or elsewhere.

A final footnote to this bit of historical unfairness. One fact is beyond dispute: the real Barbara Fritchie did, indeed, own a small American flag and her family says she did wave it (in cheering, not defiance) when Union troops marched past her house a week after the Confederates came through.

But they don’t write poems about that.

Taking a trip into the past — 12,000 years ago

I love to travel and have been fortunate to visit four continents and 20 countries.

I’m always delighted to find interesting and historic places nearby.

Our state has many famous points of interest, especially in and near our state parks.

But I want to tell you about one right in our own back yard.

The 12,000 Year History Park at Congaree Creek in Cayce includes a civil war battle site, the site of a pre-revolutionary trading post, revolutionary war Fort Congaree, a portion of the Cherokee Trail, and archeological evidence of human occupation for 12,000 years.

More recently, new discoveries are pushing that back prior to 12,000 years ago. Who knows what will be found in the future?

I have lived in the midlands since I was 8 years old — since 1956, to be exact — and I’ve traveled all over the area, from Lower Richland to the Lexington county boondocks, but never heard of the site until three years ago, when my friends, tour guides Doug Patterson and Otis Stewart, invited me and others to visit the site.

About 15 of us took the grand tour of the two major sites: Congaree Creek battle site and Fort Congaree. That tour hooked me, immediately.

Now, I am a tour guide for the Civil War Battle of Congaree Creek.

Let’s go back a few years to the origins of the park.

SCANA Corp. donated the property to the City of Cayce.

A few archeological digs around the Fort Congaree site uncovered artifacts from multiple eras.

The River Alliance decided it was an important spot that needed to be preserved and researched.

A group was formed to do more research by the University Of

Charleston all the way to the Piedmont area. Historians believe humans have inhabited the Congaree River area of Cayce for more than 12,000 years.

South Carolina Archeology Department, Congaree National Park, National Park Service and others.

They are waiting for grants to pay for more exploration.

A planned visitor center will house thousands of artifacts found in the area when funds for construction are secured.

Four different tours in the spring and fall are conducted in a beautiful setting of trees and shrubs

along wide sidewalks adjacent to Old State Road, the first government built and maintained road in the state. The tours will commence on Oct. 7.

You can take the first tour, the Battle of Congaree Creek.

The battle was one of the last battles of the Civil War against Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman’s troops. It was one of several battles to slow down Sherman’s army

as it advanced towards Columbia.

While the Confederate troops were defeated, they bought valuable time for warehouses in Columbia to empty themselves of materials and supplies to go by rail to Charlotte.

You will see some of the best preserved earthwork fortifications in the country.

The second tour takes you to the site of Fort Congaree which was established to regulate and control trade with native Americans and settlers.

The fort was one of several that stretched from the coast near Charleston all the way to the Piedmont. These forts allowed Americans and Europeans safe places to establish nearby towns and communities.

Your next stop is the native American tour which teaches visitors about how native people lived and survived the revolutionary and civil wars with emphasis on their culture and beliefs.

The tours are conducted by descendants of the original Cherokee people.

Your last stop is the natural history tour which examines native plant and animal life with an emphasis on natural resources and history of the property.

All tours will give you a good understanding of real everyday history in our own backyard.
