PICKS OF THE WEEK Independence Day: Resurgence (PG-13) —

Alice Through the Looking Glass (PG) — This follow-up to the nighpointless Tim Burton feature of 2010 boasts a return of all major players, except for Tim Burton.

This time, Alice is a grownup who returns to Wonderland because her dear friend The Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) is having some family problems that require heroic time-travel to fix.

No longer curious and quiz-

zical, new Alice just jumps in with this convoluted call-toaction, which puts her at odds with Time (personified by Sacha Baron Cohen as a clockwork jerk).

Like the last one, the movie strains to capture some ethereal weirdness, but comes off as rigid and predictable as a Disney ride with its tracks clearly visible.

Whimsy, wonder and creativity are mostly substituted by CG and nods to the last movie.

Helena Bonham Carter’s Red Queen is amusing as before, but that scarcely carries a movie or even a whole scene.

Cafe Society (PG-13) —

Woody Allen takes a trip to 1920s Hollywood with stopovers in New York City, with Jesse Eisenberg as our guide.

Young Bronx native Bobby

(Eisenberg) heads off to the glitzy gold hues of Hollywood to work with his uncle (Steve Carrell), a fast-talking, highpowered talent agent.

Bobby (neurotic and nebbish as a Woody Allen character played by Jesse Eisenberg) falls for his uncle’s assistant Vonnie (Kristen Stewart), even though the feeling isn’t totally mutual.

Bobby also gets wound up with his older brother (Corey Stall) and his mobster-y nightclub business.

It’s not laugh out loud, it’s not among Allen’s best, but it definitely has his maker’s mark and the predictability that comes with it.

Perry (Ewan McGregor) is a teacher by trade, but Dima (Stellan Skarsgaard) sees him as a trustworthy (read: able to be manipulated) middleman who can take sensitive information to MI6 so Dima can get asylum for himself and his family.

Of course, it’s not so simple, and Perry has to find some inner super-spy if he and his wife are going to survive. The movie is based on the John Le Carre book “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy”, so it’s more about

Decades after Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum saved the world, the alien invaders are back again — this time with bigger ships, cooler visual effects and much less star-power.

Since the last movie, our planet has come together in a sort of Golden Age; wars have ceased and every nation works together to make sure we’re more prepared for the next alien assault.

When the baddies do arrive, mankind is once again outgunned, but not outmatched.

Will Smith’s character is

out of this one, but his son, played by Jesse T. Usher (just be glad we didn’t get Smith’s real son, Jaden), is now a hotshot pilot nursing a rivalry with another dashing pilot (Liam Hemsworth).

Of course, they bury the hatchet in time to save the world. Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum are back on board, but still, something key is missing.

How to turn total strangers into friends MacLeod and Jerry Bellune love traveling together and spending their children’s inheritance. This is an account of their travels to the Southwest and back on blue highways, not interstates.

ore than 30 years ago, William Trogdon wrote a well-loved travel book he called “Blue Highways.”

He called himself “William Least Heat Moon,” a name he had adopted as a child in Indian Guides.

Indian Guides is a little like Scouting. It essentially is a bonding experience for boys and their fathers.

Trogdon traveled America on the blue highways on service station maps. These were the secondary roads where you could stop wherever your fancy takes you.

We have long preferred such roads. They lead you to small towns where you can stop for a home cooked meal at Mom’s Place.

Mom sets out icy pitchers of sweet tea on the tables and a dozen or so people sit together and talk about whatever they like.

I found a bench outside a shop MacLeod just had to visit and set a spell.

Another visitor drove up and stepped out of his car.

He asked where I was from. I told him.

I refrained from telling him that I was an advance scout for an enemy invasion from the Southeast.

Another visitor hearing us, stopped to ask if we had ever heard of Honea Path?

“That’s where my mother grew up,” he said.

Of course we’ve heard of Honea Path and even know where it is: • 8 miles from Belton.

• 102 from the Center of the Universe, Lexington.

The man from Greenville lives in St. Augustine, Fla. The one whose mother grew up in Honea Path lives in St. Petersburg, on the other side of the state.

I don’t envy them.

Florida is the Land of Hurricanes, Perpetual Sunshine and Exorbitant Taxes.

Here we were, three guys who had never met each other before, 1,500 miles from South Carolina and we run into each other on a street in Taos, N.M. If you are a gambler, what would you say are the odds of the three of us not only with South Carolina ties but finding it out?

This tasty croustade will tempt even non-vegetarians

I love to talk about food. To me, food is the universal common denominator, because everyone has to eat. I love talking with strangers about the foods they loved as a child, or recipes they like to prepare, because those stories are often some of their happiest memories and a window into their culture.

My special Roasted Vegetable Croustade recipe is a crowd-pleaser. It's a great appetizer or side dish for folks who aren't vegetarians, a lovely main course for those who are, and a delicious way to form a bond with new friends and old.

ROASTED VEGETABLE CROUSTADE

2. In a large bowl, mix together the remaining 1/2 cup of oil, the potatoes, squash, Brussels sprouts, green onions, carrot, celery roots, garlic, salt, pepper, Italian seasoning and sugar until the vegetables are coated.

3. Carefully place vegetables on the heated pan and roast for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring once after 10 minutes.

Allow vegetables to cool before mixing with the tofu cream filling.

To Make the Tofu Cream Filling: • 1 container (4 ounces) light whipped cream cheese • 4 ounces soft, silken tofu, drained • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese • 1/2 cup light mayonnaise • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

To Roast the Vegetables: • 1 cup olive oil, divided • 3 red potatoes, scrubbed and quartered • 2 yellow squash, sliced into 1/2-inch-thick slices • 10 Brussels sprouts, halved • 4 green onions, root ends removed • 1 large carrot, cut into 1/2-inch pieces • 2 celery roots, peeled, trimmed and cut into 1/2-inch pieces • 1 large head of garlic, separated into cloves, smashed and peeled • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon black pepper • 2 tablespoons Italian seasoning • 1/4 teaspoon sugar

To Make the Croustade: • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed • 1 egg • 1 tablespoon water

1. Heat the oven to 400 F. Pour 1/2 cup of the olive oil on a large sheet pan or jelly-roll pan, 15 1/2 by 10 1/2 by 1 inch, coating pan with the oil. Place pan in oven to heat for 5 minutes,

1. Thaw pastry sheet at room temperature for 40 minutes. The oven should already be heated to 400 F if the vegetables were roasted in it, or preheat oven as needed.

In a large bowl, mix together the whipped cream cheese, tofu, Parmesan, mayonnaise, Italian seasoning, salt and pepper until smooth.

Refrigerate for 30 minutes to blend flavors. Mix the cooled, roasted vegetables with the tofu cream filling until wellblended.

2. Unfold puff pastry on lightly floured surface. Roll pastry into 16-by-12-inch rectangle. Using butter- or olive oil-flavored cooking spray, lightly spray a shallow, round casserole dish or a round baking dish.

Place sheets of parchment paper or pieces of foil inside bowl with strips overlapping the edges to make the croustade easier to remove. Lightly spray the

parchment or foil.

3. Place pastry in casserole dish or baking dish with pastry edges overlapping the sides. Mound vegetable cream-cheese mixture in center of the pastry.

Leaving an opening in the center, fold the pastry edges around the filling, crimping edges under to form a bowl.

In a small bowl, mix together egg and water to

make an egg wash. Brush pastry with egg mixture.

Bake the croustade 20 to 30 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown. To serve, allow to cool for 10 minutes.

Using a spatula, gently loosen croustade from the baking dish or pan using the sheets of parchment or foil to help move it on to a serving dish.

Serve warm or at room

temperature.

How smart is your Smartphone?

Poor telemarketer Listen, a job is a job. We all need to find away to put bread on the table, don’t we?

To make a long story short I’m a telemarketer that’s my job and that’s what I do.

It’s not a job everyone appreciates, but it’s a job I enjoy and am proud of.

The other day, I called a house and a real nice lady answered the phone.

She was really helpful and friendly, the type of lady that helps a telemarketer get through a long day.

After some pleasantries, I asked if Mr. Smith was in.

“I’m sorry,” she answered.

“I’m afraid he doesn’t live here, anymore.”

Now that was a real disappointment being that she was a nice lady and all, but I took it all in a stride.

“I’m sorry to hear that ma’am. Do you happen to have his new number.”

“Sure thing!” The woman cheerfully replied, listing off his new number.

I hung up the phone and quickly called the new number and was surprised to hear a recording...

“Thank you for calling Green Acres Cemetery…”

Why I’m tired For a couple of years I’ve been blaming it on lack of sleep and too much pressure from my job, but now I found out the real reason: I’m tired because I’m overworked.

The population of this country is 237 million.

104 million are retired.

That leaves 133 million to do the work.

There are 85 million in school, which leaves 48 million to do the work.

Of this, there are 29 million employed by the federal government, leaving 19 million to do the work.

2.8 million are in the Armed Forces, which leaves 16.2 million to do the work.

Take from the total the 14,800,000 people who work for state and city governments, and that leaves 1.4 million to do the work.

At any given time, there are 188,000 people in hospitals, leaving 1,212,000 to do the work.

Now, there are 1,211,998 people in prisons.

That leaves just two people to do the work: You and me.

And you’re just sitting there, reading jokes.

“Sure, I do,” was his reply. “You asked me what was different about you and I said that you were wearing contact lenses.”

“Of all things to answer,” Bob questioned curiously, “why was that the thing you noticed?”

“Well, to be honest, it was quite simple,” the employee replied. “How could you possibly be wearing glasses if you don’t have any ears?”

t’s really rare to see a flip phone these days.

Even my 11-year-old has a smartphone.

Please don’t send me hate mail on why kids shouldn’t have cellphones ... I have my reasons, such as, “Mommy can take it away, too, if you act like a drama queen.”

Any argument of yours will only make me want to let her keep it and possibly get my 7-year-old a phone.

I can be a stubborn drama queen, too.

Back on the subject: You should have a smartphone.

Here’s why: • Calendars – All smartphones can be synced with one on your computer or one in the cloud, ie Google Calendar. One of the great things

about it on your phone are the reminders. When it comes time for an event or a notification of said event, your phone will ding and remind you.

If you are like me, you will forget that next Wednesday you have an appointment with your child’s teacher. Plug it into the phone and you can forget it until that thing dings at you.

• Calculators – I’m a math person. I love math. But calculating a tip at the table is annoying, especially if I’m being yelled at by my child for the 100th time that she doesn’t like her food. Pull out the calculator, crunch the numbers and make sure you’re giving that poor server her full 20%.

• Reading – I don’t read as much as I’d like. If I am reading, it’s on my phone.

I keep around 20 books on my phone so that I always have something to read. It’s convenient, so I don’t have to put yet another thing in my purse.

The type is bigger, so I don’t have to squint to see. I won’t tell anyone if your type is so

big there are only 10 words on the screen.

• Contacts – I do not remember phone numbers, emails or addresses. I’m sorry, I just don’t. I barely remember names, so asking me to remember anything else is out of the question. My phone remembers all of that and reminds me about your birthday.

• Music – I never got into the iPod craze. However, my cell phone not only stores music but streams it via apps. I have a portable radio any time I want it with just the right music for my mood.

• Camera – My cellphone probably has a better camera than anything you have. I mean this thing takes panorama shots for me.

At this point I am truly waiting for the day that this thing will fold my laundry. Hey, there’s an idea. Where’s Steve Jobs when you need him?

If the employee would mention his lack of ears (which often they did), it would be a for sure “no” for the job.

However, if the employee would mention something else, he would hire the guy.

One year, at the yearly holiday business party, Bob approached his most recent hireling and asked

Levi had one last hurrah left in him and was elected governor of New York in 1894.

He hoped to be the GOP’s standard bearer in 1896, but the party picked Wil-
