Miniature oil portrait on porcelain depicts Florence Nightingale

T

his small oval portrait depicts the image of a nurse. Painted near the turn of the twentieth century, this portrait has the distinction of being painted in miniature while still maintaining the integrity of the image. Painted with great skill and realism in oil, it is even more interesting to learn this is painted on a piece of fine English porcelain. The detail of the uniform of the nurse as well as her demeanor are skillfully conveyed. Her clothing, expression and posture portray someone in service to others. The portrait is about three inches by two inches within an outer frame of silver bound velvet.

Small imageS Such as these were often carried as tokens of affection or as images designed to embolden the down trodden. Small images are easy to pack for travel and have a certain magnetism as their small size makes a maximum impact.

The image on this portrait is that of Florence Nightingale. It would be a comfort to any suffering individual to see her calm face, her tray laden with items to ease discomfort as well as the classical way in which she is portrayed.

PortraitS Painted on ivory, carved into shell, stone or other natural materials, date back to the Roman era. Desiring to replicate the image of someone beloved before the invention of cameras and smart phones is something we can all understand.

There is no such thing as “secure” or “unhackable” when it comes to technology.

If you every hear anyone tell you something is unhackable, just start laughing. All it means is that the right person hasn’t come along with enough reason to try to hack their program.

Whether it’s a bank card, wireless network (WiFi), website, cell phone, tablet or even a security system, anything that we do on electronics has the potential to be hacked.

For instance, it isn’t science fiction that someone can walk past you and clone your credit cards. There really is a device for this.

Watch your bank account Yes, that means you will be doing your banking on the Internet.

While it does give another opening for hackers, it also gives you a way to know you’ve had your credit card information stolen in the most timely manner.

Watch for scams Did you know that it is actually more likely that you will give your information to the wrong person than it is that you will be a victim of a hacker taking it?

Pay attention to what you give out and who it goes to.

Not all emails are from good people. Not all websites are legit. Take the time to read about the current scams. Take the time to read about the current viruses and malwares that are taking over computers and phones.

Stop trying to be unhackable. Instead, just take precautions and be smart.

As we come up with new technologies designed to create a more secure world, the bad guys are becoming smarter, as well.

How Civil War legends got nicknames

requent Holy Cow! History readers know I’m a certified Civil War buff.

That terrible conflict has been my lifelong passion. I’m always amazed by how many generals, North and South, had colorful nicknames.

Here’s the back story on how three of them came to be.

The Battle of First Manassas (or First Bull Run to the Yankees), the war’s first major battle, was raging in northern Virginia near Washington, DC. Jackson was there as colonel of the 1st Virginia Brigade.

Things were going badly for the Southerners. South Carolina Confederate General Bernard Bee pointed to Jackson’s men and said, “There stands Jackson like a stone wall!”

From that moment on, the man was known as Stonewall Jackson and the military unit was called the Stonewall Brigade.

But here’s the mystery: was Bee being complimentary or sarcastic? He had been trying to convince Jackson to attack, which the Virginian refused to do. Some historians, plus Bee’s adjutant who was there, claim the phrase “stands like a stone wall” was a snide putdown, not praise for Jackson’s grim resistance.

We’ll never know Bee’s true meaning because he was wounded soon after saying it and died a few days later. His precise intention went to the grave with him. (Jackson followed 22 months later.)

“Stonewall” Jackson His birth name was Thomas Jonathan Jackson. His classmates at West Point (and the cadets he later taught at Virginia Military Academy) called him “Old Jack.” And so he was known … until a blazing hot Sunday afternoon in July 1861.

“Fighting Joe” Hooker If the Civil War had a party boy, it was Joe Hooker. Sandy haired and blue-eyed, he knew how to have a good time. A very good time. One prudish Bostonian smugly wrote that Hooker’s head-

While many assume that Confederate Gen. Thomas Jonathan Jackson earned his “Stonewall” nickname by exhibiting a tough resolve, the man responsible for birthing the nickname might have also meant it as a sarcastic quip.

“There stands Jackson like a stone wall!” might have been an insult. We’ll never know.

quarters was “a place where no self-respecting gentleman liked to go, and no decent lady could go.”

In 1862, he sent a report on the Battle of Williamsburg, Virginia back to the brass in Washington. He signed it, “I am still fighting

- Joe Hooker.” But the message was garbled en route and the dash was lost. It came out as “I am still, Fighting Joe Hooker.” Newspapers reporters –then as now eager for a new angle to a storyseized on it and a nickname was born.

Hooker was an aggressive fighter and with a great love of the spotlight. But ironically, this publicity hound hated the name that was pinned on him. He said “Fighting Joe” made him sound reckless, or stupid or, worst of all, “like a common bandit.” Like it or not, the nickname stuck … even after he was humiliated

by Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Chancellorsville.

By the way, there’s a widely repeated but utterly false story that Hooker’s own name became a nickname for someone else.

Many people claim the term “hooker” was inspired

by Joe Hooker’s frequent use of prostitutes. Not true. In fact, “hooker” used in connection with practitioners of the world’s oldest profession appeared in print multiple times well before Joe Hooker rose to fame in the Civil War. However, the general did turn a blind eye to army regulations and allowed prostitutes to follow the army, claiming it was good for morale.

Those women were nicknamed “Hooker’s Division,” and this certainly helped popularize the term. So in an indirect way, Joe Hooker was associated with “hookers.”

Jeb “Beauty” Stuart He began life as James Ewell Brown Stuart. As a boy he created a new name from the first initial of his three first names: Jeb. And people

called him that. But others called him something less flattering.

Stuart had a soft, weak chin as a teenager that gave his face an almost feminine quality. A classmate said the chin was “so short and retiring as positively to disfigure his otherwise fine countenance.” The guys had no trouble coming up with this snarky nickname: “Beauty.”

Stuart responded the only way he could: immediately after graduating from mandatorily required cleanshaven West Point, he grew a beard. A fellow officer said Stuart was “the only man he ever saw that [a] beard improved.”

The weak chin was hidden from view, but the nickname “Beauty” stayed with him.

In a way, Stuart got the last laugh.

The beard he sported for the rest of his short life was long, red and wavy; it, coupled with his reputation as a dashing cavalryman and the ostrich plume he wore in his hat, made him attractive to the fair sex. Stuart was an unapologetic ladies man who loved their attention.

And there you have it.

How sarcasm, a typo and snarkiness conspired to create three nicknames that are still remembered 150 years later. Regardless which side your family was on, let’s join together in honoring the memory of all who served so long ago.

It’s a Dog’s Life Customer service

I’m not saying that the customer service in my bank is bad, but I went in the other day and asked the clerk to check my balance.

She leaned over and pushed me.

Resurrected Rabbit A man is driving along a highway and sees a rabbit jump out across the middle of the road. He swerves to avoid hitting it, but unfortunately the rabbit jumps right in front of the car. The driver, a sensitive man as well as an animal lover, pulls over and lets out

to see what has become of the rabbit.

Much to his dismay, the rabbit is dead. The driver feels so awful that he begins to cry.

Another person driving down the highway sees the man crying on the side of the road and pulls over. The driver steps out of the car and asks the man what’s wrong.

“I feel terrible,” he explains.

“I accidentally hit this rabbit and killed it.”

“Don’t worry,” the other driver says, then runs to his car and pulls out a spray can.

He walks over to the limp, dead rabbit, bends down, and

sprays the contents onto the rabbit.

Much to the amazement of the man, the rabbit jumps up, waves its paw at the two of them and hops off down the road.

Ten feet away the rabbit stops, turns around and waves again. He hops down the road another 10 feet, turns and waves. The rabbit repeats this again and again until he hops out of sight.

The man is astonished. He runs over to the driver and demands to know, “What is in the can? What did you spray on that rabbit?”

The driver turns the can

around so that the man can read the label.

“Hair spray,” the label reads.

“Restores life to dead hair and adds permanent waves.”

Isn’t it obvious?

A fire started on some grassland near a small farm.

The fire department from the nearby town was called to put the fire out.

The fire proved to be more than the small town fire department could handle, so someone suggested that a rural volunteer fire department be called.

The volunteer fire department arrived in a dilapidated

old fire truck. They drove straight towards the fire and stopped right in the middle of the flames.

The volunteer firemen jumped off the truck and frantically started spraying water in all directions.

Soon they had snuffed out the center of the fire, dividing the flames into two easily controllable parts.

The farmer was so impressed with the volunteer fire department’s work and so grateful that his farm and crops had been spared, that he presented the volunteer fire department with a check for $1000.

PICKS OF THE WEEK Kubo and the Two Strings (PG) — A one-eyed boy with a supernatural heritage and a magic musical instrument embarks on a gorgeously animated adventure through ancient Japan.

Kubo (voiced by Art Parkinson) lost his eye to the Moon King, his evil grandfather who also can become a terrifying dragon. While adventuring, Kubo has a protective white monkey (Charlize Theron), a dopey warrior made from a transformed beetle (Matthew McConaughey) and his magic music that can make origami come to life.

Laika Studios (“Coraline,” “The Boxtrolls”) has a great track record of adapting stories with enchanting stopmotion animation. It goes off

the beaten trail, and makes offerings that can be genuinely scary (“Coraline” got pretty creepy, and “Kubo” has some spooky monsters) or sad, while still remaining engaging and appropriate for the little ones.

Colleen (Lily Rose Depp and Harley Quinn Smith), are teenage best friends who really only care about their phones and their private yoga lessons (taught by a bushy Justin Long).

They get roped into a scheme involving an undying Nazi and a peculiar Nazihunter (Johnny Depp).

The girls are dogged by walking, talking bratwursts that have been indoctrinated with fascism.

There are very few laughs, but the two leads perform well together, and it should not be held against them that their fathers are Smith and Depp.

War Dogs (R) — Back

in the heady days of 2008, David Packouz (Miles Teller) gets recruited away from his dead-end massage gig into the sleazy world of semi-legal arms dealing, as introduced to him by old pal Efraim (Jonah Hill).

Efraim rolls up in a nice car, cackling maniacally, shooting guns in the air and throwing cash around, and we’re supposed to sympathize with David, who views this as a stable option for supporting his pregnant girlfriend.

Their moral descent sees them supplying arms to shady characters in Afghanistan.

It’s sort of trying to be “The Wolf of Wall Street” but with guns instead of bonds, but neither lead ever really takes it there. Hill is playing it big and sleazy, but the movie just isn’t as smart as it thinks it is.

Hell or High Water (R)

— When the bank threatens to take their mother’s Texas home unless they can come up with the cash, two brothers decide the best place to get the money is from that same bank.

Tanner (Ben Foster) have checkered pasts and a lot of baggage, but not enough to stop them from robbin’ banks for dear ol’ momma. Marcus the Texas Ranger (Jeff Bridges) is archetypally getting too old for this, but he’s quick to catch on to the Tanners’ plan, setting the stage for

Riverland Park residents endured two floods but got their park.

Donald Morris Price, 45, of Leesville, was arrested on Oct. 25 by the Lexington County Sheriff's Department after an extensive investigation conducted with the assistance of Price the S.C. Attorney General's Office.

Price has been charged with: • 4 counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, which carries a punishment of up to 25 years for each count; • 1 count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, which carries a possible sentence of up to 15 years; • 8 counts of first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, which carries a punishment of up to 20 years for each count; and • 1 count of second-degree criminal exploitation of a minor, which carries a punishment of up to 10 years.

Altogether, Price faces up to 285 years in prison for the charges.

According to reports, investigators with the LCSD's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force discovered images containing child pornography were distributed from an address linked to Price.

Officers then executed a search warrant at Price's residence, where several electronic devices were recovered.

Examination of items found in the home uncovered numerous pictures and videos depicting Price performing sexual acts with a minor victim.

Investigators think more victims might be involved in the case, and urges residents to

“Investigators have determined Dytrych robbed the Pop’s convenience store on South Lake Drive Saturday morning while armed with a handgun and then immediately carjacked a getaway car from the Bojangle’s next door,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said. “Detectives tracked Dytrych to a location on Old Barnwell Road Saturday evening and arrested him.

The car he got away in was recovered at the same location.”

In addition to the charges levied by his department, Koon said Dytrych will likely be served warrants connected to a robbery at the RiteAid on West Main Street by the Lexington Police Department.

Woman charged in baby’s death A Lexington County woman has been charged in the death of an infant.

Elizabeth Ashleigh Thompson, 36, was arrested by officers with the Chapin Police Department on Tuesday, Oct. 25, and Thompson charged with one count of unlawful conduct toward a child.

According to reports, Thompson’s charge stems from an infant death case that occurred in the 300 block of Firebridge Drive in Chapin.

Toxicology tests indicated the infant had been exposed to methamphetamine in utero.

Thompson is currently pending bond at the Lexington County Detention Center.

Red Bank house fire kills 1 County officials are investigating a house fire that claimed the life of a Lexington-area resident.

Just before midnight on Sunday, Lexington County 911 received a phone call concerning a structure fire in the 100 block of Darian Drive in the Red Bank community.

The Lexington County Fire Service and EMS responded just before midnight, and upon arrival observed smoke and flames coming from within the home.

Firefighters went into the home to perform a primary search. They recovered a single victim.

Once outside, personnel confirmed the victim was deceased.

The Bearcats handed Gilbert its first loss of the season with a 35-18 victory to win the Region 5-3A title. It was their first region title since 2003 and first for head coach Rusty Charpia.

Over at Spirit Communications Park, the Eagles held off A.C. Flora 24-17 to claim the Region 5-4A title.

It was their second straight region title and third in the past four years under head coach Justin Gentry.

Having clinched the Region 5-5A a week ago, the Silver Foxes made more history with their first undefeated regular season at 10-0. They and 9-0 W.W. King Academy (which opens the SCISA 8-man Division II playoffs at home Friday against Patrick Henry) have kept Lexington County as the home of the Midlands' lone undefeated teams.

Grant funding brings GPS students protection from sun’s harmful rays

GILBERT, S.C. — Gilbert Primary School recently cut the ribbon on an important addition to its playground.

The new shade structure may not appear as fun as a new slide or swingset, but it will offer students and teachers much-needed protection from the harmful effects of the sun.

GPS won an $8,000 Shade Structure Grant from the American Academy of Dermatology to build the structure on the school’s largest playground.

GPS staff and PTO members worked together to obtain the grant, and students helped cut the ribbon on Friday, September 30, 2016.

As a condition of the grant application, GPS adopted a sun safety program to teach students about ways to be safe in the sun. They enjoyed the sun safety lessons held during PTO events, school events and library sessions.

The grant funded a majority of the cost associated with the shade structure, and the PTO established a campaign to raise the remaining funds.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the Shade Structure Grant Program awards grants of up to $8,000 to public schools and nonprofit organizations for installing permanent shade structures for outdoor locations that are not protected from the sun, such as playgrounds, pools or recreation spaces.

A Lexington County School District One school takes extra steps to go green and encourage healthy habits in its students.

Forts Pond Elementary students make sustainable and health-conscious choices thanks to the support of donors from across South Carolina.

FPES School Nurse Sharon Fairey worked with a group of FPES staff to raise $1,226 on DonorsChoose.org to bring a water bottle refilling station, the first of its kind in Lexington District One, to the school.

“There is a lot of research available to support the need for hydrating throughout the day to increase brain function and focus for students,” Fairey explained.

Due to FPES staff sharing about the “Water Bottle Filling Station — FPES Goes Green!” project on social media, it only took a few days for it to be fully funded. Parents, staff, and community members fell among the generous donors.

The school installed the bottle filling station onto an existing water fountain on September 12, and students quickly lined up to give it a try. They can now bring a refillable water bottle from home and enjoy cold, filtered water all day.

“Many of our teachers already encourage students to bring water from home, but

Bouknight named 2016-17 Lexington 3 District Teacher of the Year

Batesburg-Leesville Middle School Art teacher Amber Bouknight, was named as the 2016-17 Lexington 3 District Teacher of the Year during the District’s annual Teacher of the Year Banquet held on Oct. 27.

Amber was selected from the four finalists, including: Melanie Lorick, Batesburg-Leesville Primary; Brandee Quarles, Bouknight Batesburg-Leesville Elementary; and Jim Desrosiers, Batesburg-Leesville High.

In her fourth year as art teacher at Batesburg-Leesville Middle School, Amber Bouknight shares her love of art and making things with her students on a daily basis.

Her decision to become an art teacher was because she likes art and then found out that she actually liked children, too.

Amber’s great contributions to education have nothing to do with the subject of art.

As much as she dreamed of becoming a teacher/artist and jet setting to art shows every weekend, she is so glad that she became so much more.

She feels that her biggest contributions are the smiles on the faces of her students when they know they are coming to their favorite class of the day; as well as the end-

The core beliefs about teaching for Amber have evolved throughout the years.

She feels that teachers must try new things constantly to come up with the best learning opportunities possible.

An adventurous spirit led her to hike to feed those in need S oleil Black of Lexington is hiking the 350 miles of the Palmetto Trail opened so far to raise $10,000 and 10,000 pounds of food for the Lexington Interfaith Community Services food pantry.

Q. Where did you grow up

and who had the most influence on you in those years?

A. I grew up in a small town outside of Augusta, Ga.,

— Grovetown. I think my older brother and my grandmother had the biggest influences on me.

My grandmother, even in her golden years, has always been a bit of an explorer and a wild child. I always joke that she and I are twins, separated by 60 years.

My older brother always walked to the beat of his own drum and has found success and happiness in life by being different and forging his own path. He showed me how to be confident in my own skin.

Q. Where has your schooling and career taken you?

A. I graduated from college in 2006 but still didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do with my life. So I joined the Coast Guard and flew on

H-60 helicopters for a couple of years and on C-130 planes for a year. Our main focus was search and rescue and I loved living a life so fun, fulfilling and dangerous.

Q. How did you meet your husband?

A. I met my husband Jason in Augusta as I was spending a night out with friends. He was the most beautiful man I had ever seen and I just was drawn to him. It was definitely love at first sight.

We just celebrated our anniversary last week. We built our marriage on mutual re-

spect, support and shared values. I can definitely say that he is my better half.

Q. What do you find that you like best about living in Lexington?

A. I love the small community. I think I know everyone who works at Publix and I can spend hours talking to the people at the local pet store. Everyone rallies around each other in this town and its wonderful.

Q. What are your future plans as a mom and LICS supporter?

A. I want my child to live a healthy, happy life. Past that, I have no plans. My family is the center of my world and the three of us are close. I hope that never changes.

For LICS, I hope that in a couple of years I will find more free time to be able to become a regular volunteer there.

I also hope that I can play more of a role in their fundraising in the future.

Q. What would you say to attract others in our community to help LICS? A. LICS mission is to help.

Its that simple. If you need help, LICS will be there to help you. They do not judge on background, on income, on race, on religion.

LICS has a staff that is so full of love and all they want to do is spread it to others. If you need help, they will welcome you with open arms.

On the other side of the coin, if you have the ability to help others then think about donating to LICS. They use every single penny and donated item to help those around us.

They are literally our neighbors helping our neighbors.
