What’s your favorite cookie?

Chocolate chip? Peanut butter? Oatmeal raisin?

No, sorry, I have no recipe to share in this column.

Although if you have a good one for cookies please send it over. I’m always open to new ones.

What exactly are cookies on your computer and are they bad?

A cookie is just a small file with packets of data.

Here’s how it works. You access a website and start to browse. Maybe this site has a shopping cart and you add something to your cart. Now at this point you don’t finish the purchase and click off to another site or the browser gets closed.

The next time you end up on that site you notice it saved what you had in your cart!

How did it do that?

The website downloaded a small file called a cookie onto your computer and when you accessed the site again it read that file and used that information to try and sell you.

A tracking cookie will actually track what you’ve

looked at on certain websites and then use that information on other websites for the advertisements. Which is why when I look up my favorite pens all of a sudden Facebook seems to know this and ads to purchase them are all over my Facebook feed.

Are cookies dangerous?

Not unless you like looking at dangerous things on the internet. A cookie only stores information that we have freely given.

For example, those pens that I love to look at on eBay. Does it really pose a security risk if Facebook knows this and uses it to try and get me to purchase them via their links? The

only risk is to my bank account.

What about my cart that sticks around each time I visit the site? It would be like putting a cup in your buggy the next time you go to Walmart and leaving it there. Each time you visit Walmart that cup is still sitting in that buggy waiting for you. Someone might notice the cup and know that you are interested in it.

However, there is nothing about it that would pose a security risk to you. It is the same with a cookie.

They are just small files that hold public information so that your web experience is customized just for you.

FISHING REPORT

The only real problem they pose is that it can slow your computer down.

Make sure to clear out these temporary files so they don’t bog things down.

White perch: Very good. Lake World reports that the most dependable bite continues to be the white perch bite, and anglers are catching fish in the very broad range of 5-60 feet of water. The prime depth range has been 2030 feet, however, with fish schooled up near the bottom in those depths. Jigging spoons fished vertically are tough to beat once you locate the fish.

Catfish: Fair to good. Captain Chris Simpson reports that the most productive pattern is still to anchor on humps and points and fan-cast stinkbaits, shrimp and herring for channel catfish. Space your baits on ledges that range from 5-30 feet. Once the lake clears some and water temperatures begin to drop the baitfish should move deeper, which should cause the catfish to move deeper as well and improve the drift bite.

On a personal note I would like to tell everyone that a very special person is retiring from our office on December 1st. Pat Bender has been with Cherokee Trail Veterinary Hospital for 37 years. She started as receptionist/vet assistance but finishes as the office manager though she still occasionally pitches in as receptionist/vet assistance/ Mom to the staff and all around jack of all trades.

There are so many details she takes care of each day that

sometimes I don’t even know all that she has handled. She takes care of our clients and their pets and does it with a smile and calm demeanor. We will definitely miss her at the office, but she wants and deserves to have the time to spend with her husband, children, grandchildren, and Juan. I can never thank her enough for what she has done for me through the years. She was there when I started working summers while going to college. We have been through more than one crisis together and managed to survive.
