BC Grammar No. 1 principal looks forward and back education week

BC Grammar No. 1 is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year.

That and National Education Week Nov. 13-17 has Principal Chris Dickey looking back and ahead.

This is the final year for students there. They are moving into a new school next fall.

“We have outgrown our school, and our community has changed,” said Dickey, a Claflin University graduate.

The Hook Avenue school opened in 1952, one of four Lexington District 2 schools built in the 1950s. BC Grammar’s facility is among the oldest elementary schools in the district.

And residents in the Cayce and West Columbia area – some of whom worked at or attended BC Grammar – have lovingly shared their own memories of the school.

“As we prepare for this transition,” Dickey said, “we found these scrapbooks, and they reveal a lot about the school’s rich history.”

That history is shown in pages filled with photos, PTA notices and classroom activities.

“We know how we’ve been doing as a school because of the achieved benchmarks that fill the scrapbooks,” Dickey said.

Even as they work on plans for spring activities to mark the school’s 65th anniversary, much of the focus is on what lies ahead.

Along with the South Carolina Center for Children’s Books and Literacy which handles Cocky’s Reading Express they work through teachers to engage students, parents and others in the community in literacy training.

“A team of literacy specialists from USC has started by observing classes and leading professional development for our faculty, including some teachers who once were students here.”

Dickey said having teachers who were students here adds to the strong sense of community at BC Grammar and around Lexington 2.

“Something in this community, in this school, pulls people back here.”

Involvement in the school makes this year's motto, “We are One Team,” an appropriate one, inside and outside the classroom.

Riverbank Elementary, whose mascot is the sea turtle, is part of Lexington 2’s $225 million school improvements approved by voters in 2014. It’s one of three new facilities in the building plan.

Other schools in the district, which is home to 8,900 students in Cayce, Pine Ridge, South Congaree, Springdale and West Columbia, also will be receiving upgrades.

It’s a good thing West Columbia likes Sam Williams, because he likes them, too.

With nine years behind him, Williams said he likes where he is and he’ll be here a while.

“I plan to retire here,” Williams said.

New uses for fine porcelain will make you a hip hostess

M

any of us in the South have had the pleasure of eating holiday meals around a table set with beautiful white porcelain. You may have a family member who proudly used a such a set at every opportunity. As time passes, complete sets of Porcelain are often thought of as too much trouble or an accolade of a by-gone era.

I want to suggest you do as I and many others do. Use your pieces for things they may not have been intended for when manufactured. Styles of eating and popular foods have changed over the last 150 years or so since beautiful Limoges porcelain came to America. However, with a little thought, the long-forgotten porcelain dishes of your youth can make an unforgettable memory for the next generation of your family. A typical set of Limoges included many pieces for foods that were considered luxurious and as stylish as the porcelain itself. A few to mention: Those individual small, round or oval dishes, about the size of a canning jar lid are perfect for a wet tea bag next to a tea cup, a special candy or truffle at each place setting, or pats of butter.

A use off the table would be for small jewelry, such as earrings or rings that are easily lost. Tiny dishes such as this can fit well in a bathroom or on a dresser Demitasse cups and saucers are the perfect addition to a modern table holding any sort of coffee beverage you can imagine!

Just think of the special, small servings of intense flavor you can offer to your guests.

These cups are perfect for “tastings,” as they hold about 1/4 cup of liquid.

They are also perfect to serve rich desserts such as chocolate mousse.

Bone dishes are the small boomerangshaped dishes that were intended to be placed at the edge of the dinner plate for bones from fish or fowl. In today’s world,

they are ideal for oysters, shrimp or any small intense recipe that you want to serve individual dishes. They also can be easily carried in your hand while holding a stemmed glass, ideal for party fare.

Salt Cellars, those tiny little bowls that come with little silver spoons to sift salt rather than shake it, are perfect for fancy additions to dessert, such as small candies or candied citrus. I have used mine for redhots, one or two sugared pecans or two melon balls. Be creative!

Large platters are perfect for the roasts of today. Covered dishes offer up a sanitary way to keep food hot while passed around the table or displayed on a buffet.

We recently hosted a sit down engagement luncheon for our nephew Will and the young lady he will marry in January, Jessica. I set the tables for over 40 guests. I used old porcelain plates, brilliant crystal, silver goblets, linen napkins, napkin rings and silver flatware. All of these pieces came together to form a more memorable dining experience than a modern, matching set could ever have accomplished.

I used the pieces in ways that made sense to me. I was not confined to the ideas of the 1890 table top and was able to craft a memorable time for these two special family members. After the luncheon, we packed up the china and silver and gave it to them as an engagement gift. We gave them precious memories to take along with it.

As they begin their lives together, they may not use their porcelain every day but, when they do, the memories associated with it will be its true value to them.

So, just like with old houses, adaptive reuse is the way to go.

You might think keeping the car tucked away in a garage to warm up could prevent a vehicle from being stolen, but this can be extremely dangerous.

Your vehicle emits carbon monoxide, an odorless, colorless and deadly gas. Just opening the garage door isn’t enough – if you want to safely warm your car up, make sure it is not in any sort of enclosed space.

In the SC BASS Federation 6-man bass tournament on Lake Murray recently, the Greenwood Bassmasters extended their domination over the event and the lake.

155.39 lbs over the twoday event, while the next closest team didn’t break into triple digits.

Individual champion Stan Gunter had 37.25 lbs, more than four pounds more than the secondplace angler.

Stan’s individual weight was more than about half of the clubs’ total weights.

Stan heard that a few fish were caught on buzzbaits, and there were probably a few fish caught running the banks (although it is obvious from weights that “just fishing” was not a successful pattern. Unless you know what you are doing it’s tough out there).

For Stan individually, as well as the overall Greenwood Bassmasters, everything was caught “over cane.”

Stan caught about 20 fish Friday

when he weighed over 22 lbs, and even though he only caught five Saturday they were the right ones and he still put up more than 15 lbs.

A front came through, and he went from wearing a T-shirt and shorts to a jacket.

All but two of the fish Stan weighed came on a fluke, and most of the fish were in about 18 feet of water.

Since the FLW Cup, the fish have been beat on so much that just casting at the cane isn’t enough, and the Greenwood Bassmasters (who won the 2009 6-Man on Murray with a similar lead) have been fishing for these suspended cane fish long enough that they know how to adjust from dayto-day.

That there are three “Gunters” on the Greenwood Bassmasters and they all share information doesn’t hurt.

Matthews defined adult illiteracy as a chronic problem in Richland and Lexington counties where 10% to 12% of adults are functionally illiterate.

“For nearly 50 years, Turning Pages has addressed this problem by working in small groups, and primarily one-on-one with individuals to help them turn the pages to their own possibilities by improving their reading and writing skills — and more.”

Lex 2 pours out Hurricane Harvey relief donations Special to the Chronicle

Lexington 2 students, teachers and staff are showing their spirit of giving.

Students at Airport High School recently sent off donations collected from the district’s recent Hurricane Harvey relief drive to help some Houston, Texas, schools affected by August’s devastating storm.

M&W Towing and Transport, a West Columbia-based business, volunteered to drive to Houston with the donations, which include cases of bottled water, school and cleaning supplies, diapers and more.

Many of the Lexington 2 students who joined the drive remember getting help in the weeks following the devastating 2015 floods.

“People helped us,” Daniel Bailey, an Airport High teacher, said at the kickoff of the relief drive, “and we want to pay it forward.”

That shared experience in Lexington Two of the devastating floodwaters connected with Texas students whose families are still recovering, according to Terri Cyphers of Spring Forest Middle School in Houston.

That school’s student council will help distribute supplies collected by Lexington 2.

“My kids were overwhelmed, touched and humbled by the outpouring of generosity from all over, especially from your kids,” Cyphers said.

“They share a tragedy — my kids feel the personal connection.”

Cyphers said Spring Forest was hit particularly hard because of the release of the reservoirs, adding that Houston neighborhoods in the direct path had 4-6 feet of water for weeks.

In a neighborhood of 660 homes, she noted, only 57 were spared.

“When we have had so many conversations about the entitlement, greed and evil that we see today, the inherent goodwill and spirit in complete strangers really means a lot to them,” Cyphers said.

“We live by ‘Believe there is good in the world; Be the Good’, and your generosity is a perfect example.”

A shot at revenge for Dutch Fork, Brookland-Cayce

The old adage “Revenge is a dish best served cold” is apropos in late November.

As temperatures and wind cheer factors increase the level of clothing worn outdoors, it’s the perfect setting for high school teams looking for a measure of on-field payback.

Exhibits A & B are Dutch Fork and Brookland-Cayce high schools.

The two Chronicle Country teams not only seek invitations to Williams-Brice Stadium for the “Weekend of Champions,” but avenge past losses in the Lower State finals this Friday at 7:30 p.m.

CLASS 5A Fort Dorchester at Dutch Fork Temperatures were hot both literally and figuratively at Dutch Fork stadium when the two teams met on Sept. 1.

Motivated by two losses last year to the eventual state champions, the Patriots took out their frustrations in a 4125 victory against the thentop-ranked Silver Foxes.

University of South Carolina commitment quarterback Dakereon Joyner scored four touchdowns and Dutch Fork had four turnovers, ending its 16-game winning streak. It also gave the Silver Foxes something to simmer upon for two weeks following the postponement of the Summerville game due to Hurricane Irma.

Over the past 10 games since the loss to the Patriots, Dutch Fork has outscored its opponents 488-98.

Much of the attention has focused on senior transfer Bryce Thompson, whose streak of eight straight games with 3 or more touchdowns ended in this past Friday’s 28-8 win over Summerville.

His emergence, along with the return of sophomore Ron Hoff and improved play from quarterback Ty Olenchuk and wide receiver Jailen Harris, has provided a dominating offense to go with an intimidating defense which has held opponents to 9.8 points a contest during the win streak.

he holiday season is almost here and whether you are staying home or traveling with your pet, you need to plan ahead to keep them safe.

It’s hectic enough during the holidays. The last thing you need to deal with is a visit to an emergency hospital with your pet.

The risk of injury or ingestion of toxic material can increase over the holiday season if you aren’t careful.

It’s true that an “ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

You should pet-proof your home once you start putting out holiday decorations.

Puppies and kittens are usually looking for items to chew on and you are giving them lots to choose from at the holidays.

All the pretty lights mean electrical cords. Both cats and dogs may chew on the cords which can lead to electrocution or severe burns

within the mouth. Be sure to try and hide or cover the electrical cords.

Ribbon and tinsel can get caught up in the intestinal tract of cats and dogs.

Batteries and ornaments, especially glass ones and those that make noise, are also a potential hazard for your pet.

Holiday plants can also be a source of danger: Poinsettias can cause irritation to the mouth and stomach and may cause mild vomiting but are not deadly.

• If holly is ingested it can cause vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy.

• Mistletoe ingestion usually only causes gastrointestinal upset. However, some mistletoes are more toxic than others and can cause cardiovascular problems, liver failure and seizures.

• Lilies are often deadly to cats. Don’t forget the potpourris whether dry or liquid.

• Christmas tree water may contain fertilizer or be stagnant and contain bacteria. In either case it can lead to vomiting and/or diarrhea if ingested.

Sometimes you can’t take your pet with you and have to board them.

I recommend checking out the facility where you plan to board ahead of time.

If your pet has special needs or requires medication, can the kennel take care of the needs or administering medication? Does the kennel have a veterinarian associated with them? How do they handle the animals, and is the kennel clean? What is the daily schedule for the animals?

Another option is to have an in-home sitter so your pet can stay in their own place. If you do use a pet sitter, be sure and check their references and see if they are insured.

Ideally, have them stay at your home; but if this isn’t possible, have them come multiple times a day to check on your pet. Be sure and leave them with contact numbers in case of emergencies and where to take your pet if an emergency occurs.

Be sure and spend time with your cat or dog to encourage play and ease their stress level.

It helps with their behavior and also with their waist line.

Chickens in Irmo issue Welders will have a new place to call home with opening of Lexington 2 Innovation Center not plucked despite vote

Most people just drive over bridges. BrooklandCayce High School welding instructor Laird Thompson marvels at them.

Thompson spent 23 years in the steel fabrication market, working as a welder, fitter, machine operator, superintendent and in other jobs.

But it’s the projects he worked on that make him most proud -- from the Congaree River bridge along I-77 in Columbia to football stadiums for the Washington Redskins and Cleveland Browns, to the aquatics center for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, and high rises across the nation.

“To me when I see a stadium on TV that I worked on, I remember all that went into the project, and how cool it is to see something you have worked on standing, with people all over it,” said Thompson, whose 15th group of seniors is graduating from Brookland-Cayce High this year.

It’s that pride and excitement that Thompson instills in his Lexington Two students in welding, a process that joins together materials, like metals, through heat.

And that excitement is growing, with next year’s opening of the new Lexington Two Innovation Center.

After the recession in the steel industry in the mid- to late 1980s and the push to steer high school graduates toward four-year academic degrees, there is a shortage today of skilled welders and other trade workers across the United States, according to industry publications.

“In the early ’90s we saw construction rebound but we did not have support from our career centers (post-secondary) to help supply craft programs.

The welding industry all but dried up for welders,” Thompson said.

The American Welding Society notes the average welding operator is 57 and nearing retirement.

But places like the Lexington Two Innovation Center are working to train welders for the future, whether in traditional careers or in artistic pursuits, like creating one-of-a-kind art pieces or wrought iron works.

Thompson, who has 60 students in welding programs this year, said his students have gone on several paths after graduation.

private industry with structural steel plants, specialty plants and the petroleum industry, while others have gone on to become engineers.

All have benefitted from Lexington Two’s business partnerships with local industries.

These businesses advise on the latest technologies and trends for programs and help students with workbased learning opportunities.

“These (CATE) places are doing a great service delivering better-than-entry-level employees,” Thompson said.

One of Thompson’s students, 2015 BrooklandCayce grad Chris Brant, was a PLTW completer who went on to study engineering at Clemson University, entering as a second-semester freshman after getting a jump in Thompson’s classes.

And at the University of South Carolina, Lexington Two has an articulation agreement in the engineering program, allowing students to earn college credit for the course work they complete in an Innovation Center program.

That’s the beauty of the Innovation Center, according to director Joni Coleman.

“Our career and technology programs teach our students skills and competencies needed in today's workforce,” Coleman said.

For Thompson, it’s about passing on pride in a profession.

“A craftsmen's life is to leave behind something that can stand forever,” Thompson said. “That feeling of accomplishment has no words.”

While the Nov. 7 elections resolved many local municipal uncertainties, some legends never fry.

In Irmo, voters were posed a question that’s plagued the town for what seems like forever: Are they going to let them have King the clucking chickens or not?

In the end, 62.61% of Irmo voters said they don’t want chickens in residential neighborhoods.

But Irmo Mayor Hardy King said the referendum served little purpose, prolonging the argument.

“It was a non-binding referendum,” he said, “which means owning chickens in residential areas could still be passed like any other ordinance.”

King said such items only require an Irmo Town Council member to add them to the agenda.

If the item survives three consecutive readings with approvals, it becomes an ordinance, regardless of the results of a non-binding referendum.

‘That’s why I was against it to begin with; it was a waste of time.

King said many residents have been pushing for the legalization of “chicken keeping” in Irmo for years.

The mayor said many people do it, anyway, despite what laws exist.

In June 2016, nearby West Columbia signed an ordinance into law that allowed its residents to keep up to four chickens on their properties.
