Lake Murray: •Bream: Good. Lake World reports that the shellcracker bite remains very strong, both for sizes and numbers of fish. Concentrate in 4-10 feet of water and fish worms on the bottom.

•Striped bass: Good. Lake World reports that striper continue to school all over the lake, and looking for schooling activity is the best way to catch keeper-sized fish. Schooling can take places in coves or out in open water, and it can happen all day long. Some days the best schooling activity has been mid-afternoon. There is also some down-line fishing as deep as about 30 feet, and with cooling water temperatures and fish moving shallower free-lining is also becoming more productive.

Government Inspector A cocky Department of Agriculture representative stopped at a farm and talked with the old farmer; “I need to inspect your farm.”

The old farmer said, “You better not go in that field.”

The CDC recommends that if a pet is in the home of an Ebola patient, veterinarians, in collaboration with public health officials, should evaluate the pet’s risk of exposure (close contact and exposure to blood or body fluids of an Ebola patient). Based on the evaluation, appropriate measures, such as close monitoring of the exposed pet while using necessary precautions would be started.

At this time, there have been no reports of dogs or cats becoming sick with Ebola or of being able to spread Ebola to people or other animals. Even in areas in Africa where Ebola is present, there have been no reports

of dogs and cats becoming ill with Ebola. There is limited evidence that dogs can become infected with Ebola virus, but there is no evidence that they develop disease. The risk of Ebola outbreak affecting multiple people in the United States is very low. Therefore, the risk to pets is also very low, as they would have to come into contact with blood and body fluids of a symptomatic person sick with Ebola.

A contaminated hair coat could be a possible source of infection. It is important to keep people and animals away from blood or body fluids of a person with symptoms of Ebola infection.

If there is a pet in the home of an Ebola patient, the CDC recommends that public health officials in collaboration with a veterinarian evaluate the pet’s risk of exposure to the virus (close contact or exposure to blood or body fluids of an Ebola patient). Based on this evaluation as well as the specific situation, local and state human and animal health officials will determine how the pet should be handled. Any exposed pet should be monitored for

a minimum of three weeks following the exposure.

There has never been a documented case in a dog.

The virus has never been isolated from a dog, only antibodies to the virus have been discovered in dogs.

This would indicate the dog was exposed though the dog never became sick.

There would not be any reason to test a dog or cat for Ebola if there was no exposure to a person infected with Ebola. Currently, routine testing for Ebola is not available for pets.

CDC regulations require that dogs and cats imported into the United States be healthy. Dogs must be vaccinated for rabies before arrival into the United States.

Monkeys and African rodents are not allowed to be imported as pets under any circumstances. Monkeys are at risk for Ebola. Symptoms of Ebola infection in monkeys include fever, decreased appetite, and sudden death. Monkeys should not be allowed to have contact with anyone who may have Ebola. Healthy monkeys already living in the United States and without exposure to a person infected with Ebola are not at risk

for spreading Ebola. Each state and U.S. territory has its own rules for pet ownership and importation, and these rules may be different from federal regulations.

Airlines may have additional requirement.

Fruit bats in Africa are considered to be a natural reservoir for Ebola. However in North America, bats are not known to carry Ebola. Therefore, the CDC considers the risk of an Ebola outbreak from bats occurring in the United States to be very low. However, bats are known to carry rabies and other disease here in the United States. To reduce the risk of disease transmission, never attempt to touch a bat, living or dead.

There are no approved vaccines, drugs, or products specifically for Ebola available for purchase online or in stores. The information I have provided in this article was from the CDC and the American Veterinary Medical Association. The good news is that risk of exposure or disease is very low.

Did you know that most Americans are unhappy with their smile? The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) states that almost 90% of people wish that they could change their smile.

The AACD also states that about the same number of people think that a great smile improves a person’s chances to get a raise or a job promotion. And that a great smile makes someone sexier and more appealing.

Google the term “cosmetic dentistry” and you will get millions of listings for cosmetic dentists and types of dentistry, like “Lumineers.” All too overwhelming and confusing.

Cosmetic Dentistry can range from simple whitening of teeth, to orthodontics, to the most well known and popular treatment, porcelain veneers. Veneers were invented by a California dentist named Charles Pincus. At the time, they fell off in a very short time as they were held on by denture adhesive. They were, however, useful for temporarily changing the appearance of actors' teeth.

Researchers found in 1982 that porcelain could be etched with a special type of acid which allowed the dentist to permanently bond the porcelain to the enamel on the outside of a tooth.

Around 1984, a technique called Mastiques was developed as “primitive veneers.” As the porcelains improved and the bonding materials and techniques got better, dentists could predictably change smiles (and lives) with bonded porcelain veneers.

Veneers (sometimes called Laminates) are thin pieces of porcelain that cover the front, and sometimes the sides of a tooth. Veneers can mask discoloration, restore the length and the look of your teeth! They are held on to the teeth by complex dental bonding procedures.

Porcelain veneers are made by a dental laboratory. The usual procedure for a patient with porcelain veneers goes something like this. The dentist will reshape and recontour the teeth for the veneer.

Because a porcelain veneer has some thickness (about one half of a millimeter!), the teeth need to be shaped to accept the thickness of the veneer. Without this shaping, the final, restored tooth would look too thick and possibly lead to gum problems.

After the teeth are reshaped, the dentist makes an impression of the teeth for the dental lab, and places some sort of temporary veneer on the teeth. After the lab fabricates the veneers, the dentist recalls the patient, removes the temporaries and bonds the permanent veneers into place. Most times, the patient has to be anesthetized (numb) for the reshaping appointment, and the bonding procedure.

You may have seen a type of veneer called ”Lumineers.” This technique has been recently marketed heavily to dentists and prospective patients, but is actually similar to a technique that was developed in the late 1980’s. Lumineers, which claim to require “no removal of painful tooth structure” usually is only appropriate for a small number of patients.

Veneers are often called “Instant Orthodontics.” The dentist can use porcelain veneers to give the illusion of a perfect smile, by skillfully reshaping the teeth and working with an excellent dental laboratory. Often the thought of wearing braces for two to three years can be daunting to many people, especially people who speak or deal with the public. Veneers can be a great alternative to straighten their smile in just a few short visits!

Porcelain veneers can last 10 to 20 years (or more) and may need to be redone several times over the life of a typical adult. So, for children or young adults, they often are not the best choice of treatment. (Often, children are better suited for orthodontics or cosmetic bonding with tooth col-

Patients with extreme wear and tear on their teeth often ask about porcelain veneers, but also may not be appropriate patients for just veneers. Often these folks have worn their teeth because of a pathologic or destructive “bite.”

They may grind or clench their teeth during the day or night, or have habits that have caused the destruction of their teeth. Unfortunately, the porcelain will wear out sooner than the enamel of your natural teeth. Often a skilled dentist can design a smile with a “bite” that allows the patient to grind their teeth without destroying the veneers. Often the patient can help by wearing some sort of nightguard or device that eliminates or reduces grinding habits at night, and protects the veneers.

The American Dental Association does not recognize a specialty in cosmetic dentistry (unlike orthodontics or oral surgery). There are several organizations in dentistry (like the AACD) which have their own accreditations or awards, which some dentists participate in.

How does a prospective patient judge or pick a cosmetic dentist?

Many dentists call themselves “cosmetic dentists” but just like every other aspect of dentistry or healthcare, some dentists are more skilled, trained or experienced than others.

A good way to start is to ask the dentist to show you pictures of other patients similar to you.

Many dentists who are trained in cosmetic dentistry are very adept at taking pictures of their patients. (this is also very important for communication with the dental lab.)

Does the dentist use a skilled dental laboratory? Some dental laboratories are better at cosmetic dentistry than others.

Does the dentist study your “bite” prior to helping you with your new smile? This is extremely important. As we said earlier, without a thorough analysis of the patient’s bite, the new veneers can be doomed to breaking or wearing out too soon. A skilled cosmetic dentist will usually make impressions of the patient’s teeth prior to treatment and study the “bite” on an instrument called an “articulator.” This simulates the jaw movements of the patient, so the dentist knows where the pa-

Can the dentist simulate what your new smile will look like before starting? Some dentists can take a photo of your smile and enhance it to show you what your new smile could look like. This is always a great starting point for the patient.

Does the dentist spend a lot of time and energy on your temporary veneers? Most cosmetic dentists use the temporary veneers as a “prototype” for the permanent veneers. They act as a preview for the patient, and help the dentist communicate with the dental lab exactly how the final product needs to look, in color and shape.
