PICKS OF THE WEEK Finding Dory (PG) — The

forgetful blue fish from “Finding Nemo” leads this animated sequel on a quest to find a family she suddenly starts to remember.

Dory (Ellen Degeneres) is the same friendly, fasttalking blue tang, only now she has flashes of memory, of parents and a home.

Nemo and Marlin (Hayden Rolence and Albert Brooks) assist Dory on her quest, which includes befriending a difficult octopus (Ed O’Neil) and a whale shark (Kaitlin Olsen).

Fans of the original will have plenty to love about this sequel. The movie stands on its own as a better-than-decent Pixar movie, which puts it in good company.

However, it suffers from the familiarity of sequels: It’s different enough to be interesting, but you can see how closely it’s modeled after the original.

Still, the laughs are there and the emotional moments hit their mark — almost too well.

Legally blind care giver thanks her boss

Monday, Oct. 17, is Boss’s Day, an opportunity Tiffany Smith takes to heart.

While some folks might have horror stories about their terrible bosses, Smith is grateful for hers.

Years ago, she pursued her dream of becoming a caretaker, earning her Certified Nursing Assistant license in 2010 through a Midlands Technical College program.

She aced her state board exams but knew a major roadblock might keep her from landing her dream job.

She is legally blind.

Since her birth, Smith has been afflicted with aniridia — a complete or partial absence of the colored part of the eyes, the irises. Essentially, her eyes are permanently dilated, and while she can still read and do other things, her vision is quite

limited. She often wears sunglasses due to sensitivity to bright light.

She doesn’t let it slow her down at all.

“I can’t see well enough to drive, but I get around fine,” she said. “People usually wouldn’t know unless I told them.”

Her boss, Tom Falk, owns Assisting Hands Home Care of the Midlands, a freelance caregiving organization.

Smith said Falk didn’t even balk at the mention of her blindness. He had faith.

“Because of things that have happened in the past, I don’t often disclose my blindness until after the interview,” Smith said. “But with Tom, I felt comfortable with disclosing my vision issue to him.”

He said if she was certified, she should be fine.

During her tenure with Assisting Hands, she’s had numerous surgeries, including a foot operation that kept

her from working about 10 months.

Falk wouldn’t fire her.

“He let me come back to work,” Smith said. “There are many employers out there who might have cut me loose, but he didn’t.”

Smith said she’s developed such rapport with clients that they often request her.

She has two main clients at Deepwood Estates.

Smith said Falk’s compassion has become obvious.

“I’m so grateful for the opportunity Tom (Falk) has given me,” she said. “In the three years that I’ve worked for him, I’ve seen that he understands and cares for his employees as much as he does his clients.

“I really love my job. I’d only leave for medical reasons.

“He has absolutely no idea what he’s done for me,” she said. “He’s fulfilled my dream. I love taking care of people.”

Thanks to Hurricane Matthews, it’s Week 11 or “Playoff Scenario Friday” for 12 Chronicle Country teams.

The Region 5-4A championship will be settled at Spirit Communications Park in Columbia between Chapin (7-2, 3-0) and A.C. Flora (6-4, 3-0).

The Region 5-3A title could be settled at ‘Fort Knox’ in Cayce if undefeated Gilbert (9-0, 4-0) defeats Brookland-Cayce (7-1, 4-0).

Should the Bearcats win, they can clinch the region title a week later at Edisto.

Dutch Fork secured the Region 5-5A title with its 58-13 win over Irmo and Spring Valley’s 40-33 win over Blythewood. The 9-0 Silver Foxes look to further hurt Lexington’s post-season standing on the road in the first meeting in three years.

The Wildcats, White Knoll and Irmo are locked in a 3-way tie for fourth place.

Depending on the outcomes of their final games (Dutch Fork at Lexington, River Bluff at White Knoll and Irmo at Spring Valley), two of the teams will get a guaranteed playoff berth and a third possibly an at-large berth.

Walking into a new life after 16 years on crutches

James Norton now stands on his own two feet.

"You don't know what it's like to walk on your own after 16 years on crutches," Norton said.

He lost his leg in 2000 in a hit-and-run accident and was fitted with a prosthetic leg two weeks ago.

“I've never seen anyone so proud to be able to walk,” said Ted McGee, of McGee Real Estate in West Columbia.

McGee and his brother Carroll have been helping Norton get his life back in order after years of being homeless.

“He walked to my office on Monday,” Ted McGee said. “It's amazing. Getting him a prosthetic leg has literally changed his life.”

Since getting used to walking on his new leg, Norton has reached out to family members.

“I want to call my brother,” said Norton.

In addition to passing on the good news, Norton has been filling out paperwork that should allow him to begin working. And there are more doors open, too.

“We're meeting with Butch Wallace of Congressman Joe Wilson's office,” McGee said. “We want to get James in a Vocational Rehabilitation program.”

McGee said Norton is a survivor.

“James lost a brother who was hit by a car and he had a sister who died of an overdose,” McGee said.

“We just want to get him to where his life is better.”

The most expensive part

of improving Norton's quality of life has been the cost of the prosthetic leg. McGee paid the $6,000 cost until donations help offset that.

"It's worth it," McGee said. "Helping James has been a blessing that is much better than money."

Lexington County's peaches are looking a little fuzzy, to say the least.

The area used to be known for its massive peach orchards, rivaling the notoriety of the so-called Peach State of Georgia in density.

Now, in a county famous for its annual Peach Festival, residents can't find county-grown peaches in local farmers' markets.

At its height, the peachgrowing business around Lexington boasted nearly 5,000 acres of peach orchards, Clemson Extension Agent Powell Smith said.

"Now we're down to a little more than 50 acres or so," he said. "We don't grow peaches around here. We grow subdivisions."

According to Smith, the problems began in the late 1970s and early 80s, when the cold weather strangled the local industry.

"We had a series of disastrous freezes in those years," he said. "The frost damaged most of the trees

beyond recovery. Replacing the trees is expensive. Losses were so great for some farmers that they simply couldn't afford recovery."

As time passed, large swaths of orchards continued to disappear, slain by untimely weather and abandoned for more affordable options.

Many of those orchards were sold off for other purposes, such as residential and commercial development.

"Farmers did what was necessary, and the industry never recovered," Smith said.

'Foreign' fuzzy fruits While they're not as local as many nostalgic enthusiasts might prefer, many of the peaches are still coming from within the state.

According to the S.C. Peach Council's website, eight of the nine peach growers in the state are in McBee (McLeod Farms), the Upstate or Saluda County, anchored by Monetta in an area known as "The Ridge."

Much of what's sold here comes from those areas.

"We bring in peaches from

Monetta (Saluda County) and Spartanburg," said a clerk at Cayce Farmer's Market. "Those two, I'm sure of."

Market Manager Brad Boozer of the State Farmer's Market said, "Most of our peaches come from Spartanburg and The Ridge. Only a small percentage comes from Lexington County. It's dwindled down tremendously."

Last stronghold While many have given up on peaches, one area grower hasn't.

Kathy Taylor, whose husband co-owns Wayne P. Taylor Family Farms, said they has no plans to stop growing peaches.

"Nor are we going to sell the land, as far as I know," she said. "Some of our orchards are on land we're leasing from others, and we're firm on maintaining that."

Taylor said his family has about 75 acres of peach orchards, essentially the only orchards left in an area that was well-known for them.

"It wasn't always this way," she said. "It's an unpredictable crop. So many orchards have gone. It's sad, but true."

Veteran treks 472-mile Palmetto Trail to raise money for nonprofit pantry

Soleil Black isn't afraid to take on a big challenge alone.

She is hiking the 472-mile Palmetto Trail to raise money for the Lexington Interfaith Community Service food pantry which badly needs it.

Soleil and her husband Jason Wise live near Lexington High.

Jason is a Marine infantry veteran and civilian firefighter at Fort Jackson.

Soliel became interested in LICS when she donated used clothing to the Lexington charity.

"I started reading online about their mission and it really spoke to me," she said.

She started volunteering part time and started planning her hike in May to celebrate her 33rd birthday next month.

"I decided I wanted my birthday present to be donations to LICS," she said. "Hike

For Hunger SC was born."

LICS Executive Director Robin Bowers said, “Soleil’s an amazing woman, a Coast Guard veteran. She’s undergone many hardships.

“Her goal is to raise $10,000 and 10,000 pounds of food for our Food Pantry, with pledges from many supporters.”

She is hiking solo but with what she calls an amazing team of people helping throughout the state.

“My family, friends and even several fire houses are helping to house me, transport me and feed me along the way."

She became interested in mountaineering and winter sports a few years ago.

"I look for excitement, danger, and adrenaline," she said.

"This hike was actually a relaxing departure."

The best part of the hike has been the solitude.

"It allows me to connect with nature and experience it to its fullest.

“I cannot count out the beauty. Mother nature has quite the paintbrush."

Her journey was interrupted in the upstate when she twist-

ed an ankle.

Despite her pain, she had to hobble two miles to the nearest road to be taken to a doctor.

"I'm feeling great now and ready to continue."

Her goal is to finish in 40 days, just short of 6 weeks.

"I'm really looking forward

to being home for Thanksgiving dinner."

Old silver spoon was reworked to keep up with tastes of the day

T

he solid silver spoon pictured here was made in the year 1745. It is hard to imagine a piece from so long ago being as useful today as it was when it was first crafted. Perhaps this is why silver pieces for the table often transcend decorative trends and remain stylish. They were crafted as useful tools rather than decorative objects. I have written before in this column about silver and its unique anti-microbial properties. A piece of silver insured the owner of a barrier to germs and disease that claimed many generations over the millennia.

Silver pieceS Such as this spoon were singular pieces of artist merit.

They represent their specific period of time by the way in which they were handcrafted by silver artists. Details such as the joining of handle to implement as well as hand cut, rather than commonly found pressed designs, leave behind period specific details that newer silver lacks.

This particular spoon features a lunging lion crest which is found very rarely in heraldry. The aggressive posturing of this animal shows the spirit and attitude of the royal family who owned the spoon. Pieces marked with this heraldry mark were instantly and easily identifiable down to the exact owner.

The bowl of the spoon is in the form of a lovely shell. A close examination reveals the hand scored pattern of development which allowed a plain spoon bowl to be hand crafted into something as special as a shell. This spoon, being made in 1745, would never have had a shell form bowl. This form of bowl was not popular until closer to 1800. As with many pieces of silver, this spoon was reinvented into something to suit the flavor of the times. A separate silver artist, working nearly 50 years or so after the spoon was first made would have added the scoring to craft the bowl we see today.

Silver was so valued that it was rarely disposed of, just altered or added to – both with decorative accents or added parts.

Many silver julep cups have been turned into baby cups with just the addition of a silver handle.

Customers can order what they want online and have it waiting for them at a gas station-esque store where they pull up and their groceries are put in their cars.

This gives them the ease of ordering online while keeping all items as fresh as possible.

The only question is, if these Amazon and Walmart ventures succeed in our community, how long before local neighborhood groceries go out of business?

Pulling a fast one: The littlest skyscraper

iny houses are all the rage these days. A growing number of Americans are selling their grownup homes and cramming their belongings into ludicrously teeny structures the size of hamster cages.

To each their own, I reckon.

Nearly 100 years ago, folks in one Texas town decided to build something very big.

But they got something very little instead. And nobody was amused by it.

Here’s the story of how a swindler built the world’s littlest skyscraper.

It all started with Texas’ big oil boom in the early days of the 20th Century.

Nothing that immense had ever been discovered before, gigantic seas of petroleum that seemed to stretch on forever underground.

In 1912, gushers spurted in the Burkburnett Field just outside Wichita Falls, Texas, luring more than 20,000 people there in five years. Everyday folks became millionaires overnight and money flowed like, well, oil.

Wichita Falls wanted to be more than just another boom town. It wanted something that would put it on the map.

And in the 1910s, nothing did that better than building a skyscraper.

America was skyscraper crazy just then. New York was home to the country’s biggest buildings, of course. But Chicago, San Francisco and many other cities were busily erecting them as well. Newspapers eagerly reported each new record setting height. If your town wanted to be considered a serious city, it better have a skyscraper.

Which is exactly what J. D. McMahon proposed building in 1919. Sure, Wichita Falls already had its share of buildings on the larger side. But McMahon was talking big.

Big. BIG! Not much is known about the man. McMahon seems to have been a Philadelphian who turned up amid the rush of boomers and ran a company that built oil drilling rigs.

He rented space in the little brick Newby Building. As you

Investors found themselves in a world of hurt after being swindled by resident J.D. McMahon who duped them into financing a 480-inch building.

would imagine, office space was in high demand at the time. So McMahon suggested killing two birds with one stone: building a sky scraper that would provide muchneeded offices while also serving as Wichita Falls’ calling card to the world.

Blueprints were drawn up showing a 48 story annex to the existing Newby Building.

McMahon circulated them among local movers and shakers. With so much cash floating around, he had no trouble finding ready investors. Five of them ponied up $200,000,

almost $3 million in today’s dollars.

And so ground was broken, building materials were unloaded and the new building went up.

Then, almost as soon as construction started, it was finished.

McMahon’s “skyscraper” topped out at just four stories.

Each floor held only one tiny office. The structure stood 40 feet — about the same size as seven tall men — and had one of the least impressive views from any skyscraper anywhere.

Wichita Falls was now on the map, alright.

It was the laughing stock of Texas.

The five investors weren’t laughing. They immediately hauled McMahon into court, where they promptly ran into a legal wall.

When the lawyers took a close look at McMahon’s blueprints, they were stunned by what the saw. The investors, who had practically tripped over themselves rushing to get in on the deal, hadn’t read the fine print. The plans were drawn to a scale that was in inches, not feet, meaning the building raised 480 inches — not 480 feet as the men who’d put down the money had assumed.

Even worse, no evidence was found proving McMahon ever spoke the words “48 stories,” “48 floors” or anything of the sort. He had relied instead on the conman’s great-

est asset — his victims’ greed — and had swindled them with surgical precision.

The judge had no choice but to rule in McMahon’s favor; he had legally delivered what he had promised. Case closed.

Although McMahon beat the rap, hanging around Wichita Falls wasn’t a wise idea. Texans carry guns, after all, and they know how to use them. So he slipped out of town PDQ. McMahon seems to have later talked his way into a vice presidency with Rome, New York’s utilities company, then vanished from history.

For the Newby-McMahon Building, as it’s known, it was a hard-luck story. Ripley’s Believe It Or Not poked fun of it in 1920, it sat empty during the Great Depression and fire gutted much of it in 1931.

World War II gave it a second chance, when every bit of available space was needed for the war effort. The Wichita County Heritage Society later bought it and restored it, then returned it to private hands.

With its centennial drawing near, the old building is roaring into the 21st Century in fine form.

The investors and the people of Wichita Falls were eventually able to grin at their misfortune. In fact, the building is a now a historic landmark and helps draw visitors to the town, a physical reminder that despite the saying, everything isn’t always big in … oh, you know.

It’s a Dog’s Life A harmless tap

Jim grabbed his suitcase off the luggage carousel and headed outside to hail a taxi.

A taxi promptly picked him up, and they were on there way.

Twenty minutes into the ride, Jim had a question for the taxi driver.

“Excuse me, sir,” Jim said, tapping the driver on the shoulder.

“Ahhhhhhhhhhh!” screamed the taxi driver, swerving the taxi across three lanes of traffic before finally stopping the car on

the opposite shoulder.

“What the heck was that all about?” demanded Jim, thoroughly shaken.

“I’m sorry,” said the taxi driver, wiping his brow.

“This is my first day as a taxi driver. I’ve been driving a hearse for the last fifty years!”

Someone’s about to be single “Brian, what’s wrong with you? You’ve been sitting at your desk looking depressed for the last five minutes!”

“Oh Dan,” Brian respond-

Pick it up “OK, everyone,” said the the instructor at the birthing class, trying to get everyone’s attention. “We’re going to do an exercise now. It’s purpose is to help the men sympathize with their partners.

“We have here what’s called a pregnancy suit,” the instructor explained,

holding up an artificial stomach with a strap. “This imitates the feeling of being pregnant.

“Which husband volunteers to be the first one to try it on?”

“I will,” said one man, taking the suit and trying it on.

“This isn’t too bad,” the man said while walking around. “I think I could get used to this.”

“OK,” said the instructor, smiling. “Now I would like you to bend down and pick up my pen from the floor.”

“You want me to pick it up?” he asked hesitantly.
