PrayforWay: Sandy Run toddler battles cancer

Only 2-and-a-half years old, Wayland Whitten was diagnosed with neuroblastoma on Sept. 22.

The cancer manifested in a tumor in his abdomen and has invaded his bone marrow.

Wayland and his parents, Tyler and Tracy Whitten, live in Sandy Run. There is a Facebook page set up for him titled: "Pray4Way." Wayland is scheduled to have a bone marrow transplant in early 2018, in addition to the challenges he’s already facing.

“He just finished his third cycle of chemotherapy,” said Rebecca Whitten Cobb, Wayland’s aunt.

Cobb was part of a fundraiser earlier in November to help the Whitten family.

Freedom Spradley helped organize the event.

“At the Pray4Way fundraiser, 400 barbecue chicken plates sold in less than two hours and ultimately helped raise $15,000 for the family,” said Spradley.

Her initial request for a donation of chicken had to be expanded based on the success of a fish fry conducted for Wayland by the Sandy Run Fire Department.

“We realized we’d need more food for the Nov. 11 dinner,” she said.

The House of Raeford plant in West Columbia, through Chuck Underhill, ended up donating 400 pounds of chicken leg quarters for the barbecue event.

“It was so amazing to see the community come together in support of this awesome little boy,” said Spradley.

“You would not know he is sick, except that he lost his hair,” Cobb said. She also said in his last treatments, Wayland was given two types of “very aggressive” chemotherapy.

The Sandy Run Volunteer Fire Department is holding a raffle that ends Dec. 23.

Cobb and her brother, Tyler (Wayland’s dad), are members of the fire department.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are down to 354.72 (full pool is 360.00), and water temperatures are in the mid-60s.

In striped bass news, Captain Brad Taylor (803331-1354) reports that despite moderate water temperatures fish have really worked their way up the river where a lot of the better fish can now be found – in addition to the back part of creeks all over the lake.

There is some schooling activity, and you can catch those fish on double rigs and bucktails.

However, the most productive way to fish most of the time is with free lines and planer boards.

Every day the bite is different and fish are still very scattered, so you have to keep zigzagging until you find where they want to hold on a given day.

A few birds have showed up but in the next couple of days there should be a lot more with the cooler weather.

You can still catch striper down the lake on down-lines but you really have to pick through the little ones.

On the

crappie front, Brad reports that the fishing has been good.

The fish are on the move following threadfin shad, and because of that you have to cover a “pile” of water to find them.

Broadly speaking crappie are set up in the mouths of coves and creeks following bait, and they are also around brush in 15-20 feet of water.

If you can find docks with enough water they may hold crappie.

Catfish are also biting well, and Captain William Attaway (803924-0857) reports that the bite is good in 30-50 feet on herring, shad and perch. The action should continue to get better as it gets colder.

PICKS OF THE WEEK Logan Lucky (PG-13) — Director Steven Soderbergh is back in the game with a gang of Southernfried charmers hoping to filch a fortune from the Charlotte Motor Speedway during the busy Memorial Day weekend.

Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum) is not the luckiest of guys. Fired from his construction job and facing a visitation problem with his daughter, he hatches a plot to rob the raceway along with his onearmed brother Clyde (Adam Driver) and a safecracker jailbird named Jimmy (a hilariously lit-up Daniel Craig).

Between the cast of crazy characters — Riley Keough, Katie Holmes, Seth MacFarlane, even Hilary Swank as a dogged FBI agent — the laughs from dim-witted, over-the-top antics come at a steady clip, and yes, there's a sweet ending to put it all right.

I Do Until I Don't (R) — A jaded, zealous filmmaker posits that marriage as a lifelong partnership is not the thing, and that it should be treated as a seven-year, renewable contract.

We meet three couples with which she presumes to prove her thoughts on the subject: an older couple (Mary Steenburgen and Paul Reiser), who spend their time being sarcastic; a young hippie couple (Watt Cenac and Amber Heard), who spend their time making out; and Ed Helms and Lake Bell (also writer, director and producer), who play a couple struggling to start a family.

It's billed as a comedy, but it's not really funny, nor is it poignant or scathing or ... anything.

Fighting illiteracy Turning Pages Director Chris Matthews called adult illiteracy a chronic problem in Richland and Lexington counties, where between 10% to 12% of adults are functionally illiterate.

For nearly a half century, Turning Pages has sought to address this problem by working in small groups and primarily one-on-one with these individuals to help them turn the pages to their own possibilities by improving their reading and writing skills and more, Matthews explained.

Cayce to hold several Christmas events

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Cayce.

The City of Cayce is sponsoring many annual “Christmas in Cayce” events beginning Nov. 30.

“Cayce is a great place to be all year round but especially at the holidays," said Cayce Mayor Elise Partin.

“Come join us for all the family-friendly, free events.

They're a great way to come together as a community, to get away from the hustle and bustle and to get in the spirit of the season. We look forward to seeing you."

Cayce's 40th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony is at 6 p.m. on Nov. 30.

The event is sponsored by The Woman’s Club of Cayce.

Proceeds from the sale of lights are given to God’s Helping Hands.

The Woman’s Club also sponsors the “Cayce Cares” food drive. Tree lighting attendees are asked to bring canned goods and non-perishables for God’s Helping Hands.

The Tree Lighting includes a community reception and it is free to the public.

Cayce’s neighborhoods have joined together to provide a little Christmas spirit of their own.

Each participating neighborhood will line their streets with lighted trees giving you a ride through a fantasy “winter wonderland.”

Carols Along the River-

walk at Cayce Riverwalk Park is from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Dec. 1.

The event begins at the N Avenue entrance, at the Riverwalk Pavilion.

Several area church choirs and local musicians

will be singing and playing throughout the first half mile of Riverwalk. Riverwalk will be lighted with luminaries and there will be free refreshments.

Gaston Solar, LLC: Notice of Availability of an Environmental Assessment AGENCY: Rural Business & Cooperative Programs (RBS), USDA ACTION: Notice of Availability of an Environmental Assessment SUMMARY: Notice is hereby given that the RBS, as required by the National Environmental Policy Act, is issuing an environmental assessment (EA) in connection with possible impacts related to a project proposed by Gaston Soar, LLC, of Swansea, Lexington County, SC. The proposal is for construction of a 10.2 megawatt (MW) solar facility located on approximately 102 acres located west of the intersection of George Derrick Road and US Highway 321 approximately two (2) miles north of Swansea, SC. The approximate 102-acre tract is a portion of the parcels identified by Lexington County Geographical Information System with parcel Numbers 011900-02-035 and 011900-02-03. Gaston Solar has submitted an application to RBS for funding of the proposal.

S&ME, Inc., an environmental consultant, prepared an environmental assessment for RBS that describes the project, assesses the proposed project’s environmental impacts, and summarizes as applicable any mitigation measures used to minimize environmental effects.

RBS has conducted an independent evaluation of the environmental evaluation of the environmental assessment and believes that it accurately assesses the impacts of the proposed project. No significant impacts are expected as a result of the construction of the project.

Questions and comments should be sent to RBS. Also, review of the environmental assessment may be done at RBS Office located at 1835 Assembly Street, Room No. 1007, Columbia, SC. RBS will accept questions and comments on the environmental assessment for 14 days from the date of publication of this notice.

Any final action by RBS related to the proposed project will be subject to, and contingent upon, compliance with all relevant Federal environmental laws and regulations and completion of environmental review procedures as prescribed by 7 CFR Part 1970, Environmental Policies and Procedures.
