Donate: Last call for local flood relief program BY ROB COTTINGHAM cottinghamrob@yahoo.com

It’s not too late to donate. Hundreds of flood victims are still looking for help. Local relief program leader Marilyn Gray and her staff are making a final push to help as many affected families as possible. Gray’s project, the St. Vincent de Paul Society’s House in a Box, will lose its grants Dec. 31. “But we can still help these families,” she said. “And we’re going to do so till the last minute of our grant.” In the meantime, the char-

ity has applied for more grants, but won’t have a confirmation until mid-December. So far, the program has helped more than 200 families since the October 2015 flood that ravaged much of the Midlands by supplying a house full of furniture. Originally, cases were processed through a warehouse on Shop Road in Columbia. The group relocated to Lexington, and now the process is streamlined with less than a weeklong turnaround, thanks to Furniture Services Inc. “FSI has been amazing for us,” Gray said. “They’ve made it easier for us to help

these families. We can get this furniture to our clients in less than a week, from the interview till delivery.” Since moving to a new location, the charity organization has changed its name to St. Vincent de Paul SC Disaster Relief. Recently, Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church donated $8,500, helping the nonprofit provide furniture for 10 families. Help is also coming from far-off places. St. Mary’s Church in Texas donated $9,000, providing eight families with much-needed relief. Gray said the average cost

per family has dropped to about $850. SVDP SC Disaster Relief is a 501(c)(3) charity and sends letters for each donation. Every donation is tax deductible. “Mothers still have children sleeping on the floor,” Gray said. “Many people don’t realize how many families are still without homes and other basic needs. I urge others to help out as much as they can.”
