The old saying, you get what you pay for, is true in the tech world. Unfortunately, if you buy cheap stuff you get cheap stuff.

Keep this in mind as you pick up that slick $50 tab-

let. It may not last as long as you’d like and you may need to replace it with something more expensive in a few months.

In my opinion, cell phones make the worst gifts simply because they are very personal devices.

If you know what you are doing, take a look at websites like Amazon. Sometimes you will get better deals through them.

Cameras

Cameras always make a good gift. With cameras being so common on phones these days we forget the simple pleasure of owning Cameras always make a good gift. Think of a small digital camera with a good zoom. Most phones have a decent camera. Not all have a great zoom or sports capture.

TV TVs are a big gift every holiday season. It is the big

ticket item on my children’s Christmas list this year.

Remember that the size of a flat screen TV is measured diagonally so make sure it’ll fit in the space available.

Smart TVs will cost more because they are setup to allow wireless access.

HD TVs will be more expensive because they have a better quality picture than a regular TV. In buying a TV, consider

how it will be set up. Will it be on a stand or will it need a wall mount?

DVD players If you are going to buy a DVD player, you may want to consider a DVD/Bluray combo. It isn’t that much more expensive and that gives the person you are buying for more options when buying or renting movies.

Collect silver with confidence when you know the marks

W

ith the holidays upon us, this is the time that many of us bring out silver flatware, candlesticks, and other table ware. With a quick polish, these pieces transcend time bringing with them the memories of a bygone era.

Many silver collectors include English sterling in their collections. It was very popular to collect English silver in the 1890s so that many pieces from our ancestors are from “across the pond.”

If you own English silver or would like to begin to collect, the following dating system will help you determine age.

Old English Silver Dates Charles II 1660-1684 James II 1685-16 88 William and Mary 1689-1694 William III 1695-1701 Anne 1702- 1713 George I 1714-1726 George II 1727-1759 George III 1760- 1819 George IV 1820-1829 William IV 1830-1836 Victoria 1833- 1900 Charles VII 1901- 1909 George V 1910- 1936 Hallmarks that go along with these dates are usually a series of four or five

marks indicating the following: • One mark that indicates the Silver Standard. This is usually indicated by a rampant lion figure.

• A second mark that indicates the location of the office of assay.

• A third mark indicating the maker.

• A fourth mark indicating the date.

• A final mark indicating that duty was paid on the item.

This complicated system of marks was used for many centuries and continues to be a world standard when dating silver from England.

To locate marks on your own flatware, simply turn it over to find this series of marks stuck at the base of the implement where the bowl or tines meet the handle.

On hollowware, the marks will be clearly struck on the body of the piece, not the bottom as with American silver.

Knowing the dates and hallmarks will help you to date pieces in your own collection or add to it with confidence.

Silver styles are ever evolving, yet this system of marks and dating has remained unchanged for centuries.

The 2015 high school football season is in the books. It did not end the way Lexington High School had hoped with a 63­-13 loss to Northwestern in the Class 4A Division II final. The points scored not only tied the most allowed in a state title game, but also the most by a Wildcats’ team in the post­season.

Despite the ending, this Lexington team still firmly etched a place for themselves in school history with a bevy of accomplishments: ∙ School ­record 13 wins in a season ∙ School­record 13 wins in a row ∙ A 7­0 road record ∙ S.C. Football Coaches Association’s Palmetto Champions’ Class 4A Lower State Specialist of the Year Christian Kinsley ∙ SCFCA Palmetto Champions’ Class 4A Lower State Coach of the Year Josh Stepp ∙ Senior running back Slade Carroll rushed for over 2,000 yards this season and

over 4,000 for his career. ∙ Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl All­Star selections wide receiver Tyler Schadewald and linebacker Trey Mitchell. ∙ Shrine Bowl selections defensive back Nick Graves and wide receiver Jayson Hopper “I’m incredibly proud of our kids and our coaches,” Stepp said.

“Nothing to hang our heads about. Thirteen wins in a row is special, region championship, (Class) 4A runner­ up. Not the way we wanted to finish it, but that’s a very good football team over there and you can’t make mistakes the way we did and expect to beat a very good football team.

Congratulations to them, but I’m extremely proud of our kids and coaches.”

CURTAIN CALL Chapin quarterback Logan Bailey closed out his high school football career in spectacular fashion at the Touchstone Energy Cooperatives North­South Bowl.

The senior Eagle threw for 272 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for two more scores in leading the North to a 37­27 win over the South. Bailey was awarded North Offensive MVP honors, marking the second straight year a Chronicle Country player earned such a distinction at a post­season All­Star Game. “God has really blessed me and put me in this

position; I’m so grateful,” Bailey said. “Those guys out here on the field did a great job of getting open and my (offensive) line did a great job taking care of me. It’s just a team effort.”

Bailey finished his prep career one of two Chronicle Country players now among the Top 10 all­time touchdown leaders. Ironically, the other was North teammate Terrence Wilson of Batesburg­Leesville High who rushed for 25 yards this past Saturday at the North­ South Bowl and is the Panthers’ career rushing and TD leader.

Appendectomy A five-year-old girl answered the door when the census taker came by. She told the census taker that her daddy was a doctor and wasn’t home because he was performing an appendectomy.

“My,” said the census taker, “that sure is a big word for such a little girl.

Do you know what it means?”

“Sure do! Fifteen-hundred bucks, and that doesn’t even include the anesthesiologist!”

Twin Birth A man came out of a hospital shouting, “my wife has given birth to twins!”

A curious guy asked him, “what do the twins look like?”

The man answered, “Like each other!”

Can’t Take It With You An old man was on his death bed. He wanted badly to take all his money with him. He called his priest, his doctor and his lawyer to his bedside.

“Here’s $30,000 cash to be held by each of you. I trust you to put this in my coffin when I die so I can take all my money with me.”

At the funeral, each man put an envelope in the coffin. Riding away in a limousine, the priest suddenly broke into tears and confessed that he had only put $20,000 into the envelope because he needed $10,000 for a new baptistery.

“Well, since we’re confiding in each other,” said the doctor, “I only put $10,000 in the envelope because we needed a new machine at the hospital which cost $20,000.”

The lawyer was aghast.

“I’m ashamed of both of you,” he exclaimed. “I want it known that when I put my envelope in that coffin, it held my personal check for the full $30,000.”

The girl said, “I don’t know. I don’t eat cats.”

Psychiatrist Confessions While attending a convention, three psychiatrists take a walk.

“People are always coming to us with their guilt and fears,” one says, “but we have no one to go to with our own problems.”

“Since we’re all professionals,” another suggests, “why don’t we hear each other out right now?”

They agreed this is a good idea. The first psychiatrist confesses, “I’m a compulsive shopper and deeply in debt, so I usually overbill my patients as often as I can.”

The second admits, “I have a drug problem that’s out of control, and I frequently pressure my patients into buying illegal drugs for me.”

The Lexington connection is everywhere

MacLeod and Jerry Bellune are spending their children’s inheritance traveling the country and enjoying every minute. Here is an account of their travels from South Carolina to the Southwest and back, a 4,736-mile trip through 11 states.

On the Natchez Trace

Lets say you’re driving a scenic parkway and spot a bright blue T-model ahead.

The coupe turns into a parking area. Wanting to know more about it and who’s in it, you turn in, too.

The Ford is a 1926 model. I’ll do the math for you.

That makes it 89 years old and it’s still rolling.

In it are Gene Bell and his wife. They started south on the historic Natchez Trace outside their home in Nashville, Tenn. They’re headed for Jackson, Miss., for a rally of vintage car owners.

“You’re from Lexington, S.C.?” Gene asks. “My brother lives there. He works for Eagle Aviation.”

Small world.

We encountered this all along our 4,736-mile round trip journey across the Deep South and Southwest.

Almost everyone we talked with has visited our tiny but beautiful state, wants to visit there or has a friend or relative who lives there.

Take it slow

For people used to the 70 miles per hour life of the American interstate, the Natchez Trace Parkway will seem sluggish.

Speeds of 50 miles an hour are relaxing and restful but they also might lull you off to sleep.

The Natchez Trace has a colorful history. We stopped at the Visitors Center at Mile Marker 266 where the history of the trace is outlined on a long mural covering two walls and watched a skillfully made film of what it did for the development of the Mississippi Valley.

The parkway traces a 444-mile trail through exceptional scenery and 10,000 years of North American history.

Early travelers

Native Americans, fur traders, settlers and a future president traveled the Old Trace on foot and horseback from Ohio, Pennsylvania and Kentucky to New Orleans and the Mississippi delta.

The Trace follows a geologic ridge line that early pathfinders — prehistoric animals — used to reach grazing lands and the Mississippi River.

Native Americans came next, following trails created by foraging bison, deer and other large game that broke their way through dense undergrowth.

Prehistoric natives settled in Mississippi along the Natchez Trace. We stopped to see 2000-yearold Pharr Mounds they left near Tupelo, Miss.

European explorers hired Native American guides of the Choctaw and Chickasaw tribes.

Jefferson’s vision

Before the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, President Thomas Jefferson wanted to connect the Mississippi frontier with the rest of the country. He had a postal road built from Daniel Boone’s Wilderness Road where it ended near present day Nashville, Tenn., and the Mississippi River.

Treaties with native tribes opened the frontier to European settlers.

In 1801, Jefferson had the U.S. Army blaze a trail along the Trace he called the “Columbian Highway.”

Those who used it had a different name — “The Devil’s Backbone” due to its remote, rough conditions and bandits who preyed on travelers.

We met hikers, bikers and antique auto buffs on the 444-mile Natchez Trace. The scenic parkway follows the historic early frontier trading and native American trail from Nashville, Tenn., to Natchez, Miss.

the journey north or south on horseback or wagon in two to three weeks, longer on foot. Today at 50 mph, you can drive the entire 444 miles in nine hours.

Critical to the Trace as a trade route was the development of inns and trading posts. Many early towns sprang up. During the War of 1812 and the Creek War, Gen. Andrew Jackson’s troops traveled south on the Trace to defend against a British invasion.

As the “Great Awakening” spurred “spiritual development,” Methodist preachers rode circuits on horseback, serving small rural communities along the Trace. By 1812 they claimed 1,067 Caucasian and 267 African American converts. Baptist and Presbyterian missionaries followed to minister to migrating Scots-Irish.
