What drove me to buy a fake Christmas tree

There comes a time when one eats the words, “I will never, ever……”

The decision to buy a fake tree does not happen overnight. Most of the time a series of events leads up to it.

I bought a fake Christmas tree in 1982. Thomas and I were “newlies” and renovated our home for the Johnston Women’s Club Christmas Too-wah. For nonSoutherners that’s a “tour.”

The problem was that we had NO furniture. Enter Cuz Wayne the town decorator.

He pilfered the homes of the Herlong women. It was an excellent idea until the tour-ees walked through my home saying, “Isn’t that Josie Herlong’s fainting couch that her Momma’s second cousin twice removed left her when the family sold their lovely home on Legare Street in the SOB section of down-town Charleston back when the war of Northern aggression was fixin’ to occur?”

One challenge

We decided to call the living room the “Christmas Room” as it would house the Christmas tree.

Thomas was instructed to find a grand tree that would be the star attraction.

Thomas over-delivered.

The tree had three trunks, six birds’ nests, attack marks from a beaver and a partridge in a pear tree... Just

kidding about the partridge.

The tree made a gigantic hit with all who came.

Thomas and I were exhausted and financially spent.

Christmas came and left.

The decorations came down with the season.

The tree stayed through January but ugly, brown-ish and massive as ever.

As Valentines Day approached, Thomas knew it was past time for the tree to be removed.

He tried traditional removal. It became one of those universal mysteries… something you will ask the Lord when you meet him: “How did we get that tree into the house?”

Thomas was left with one option: the chainsaw.

Yes, in my newly renovated home one cold February day, he used a chainsaw to dismember my massive Christmas tree.

That and other traumat-

ic Christmas tree mishaps like being pinned under it at 1 a.m. while decorating alone as usual. Don’t get me started. This is why I decided to take the plunge.

Let me finish this story so I can spray “Norfolk Island Pine” scent on my tree.

However, lights can be more than decorations this time of year.

They can also be an important tool in the protection of your home.

The last thing a burglar wants is to be spotted when attempting to break and enter.

Install outdoor motion detector lights that come on when someone approaches your home at night.

You should also set a timer for indoor lights if you will be away from home for a while.

This will often serve as enough of a deterrent so potential thieves don’t want to risk getting anywhere near your home.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are down to 354.56 (full pool is 360.00), and water temperatures are in the lower 60s down the lake but in the mid50s up the lake.

It’s been a weird fall for bass fishing on Lake Murray, and veteran tournament angler Captain Doug Lown reports that fishing is pretty tough.

15-16 pounds is a really strong tournament bag right now.

All fall fish never really got into a good shallow pattern, and now it seems as if they have skipped over the fall pattern and gone straight into a winter bite.

The best bet for catching bass seems to be fishing around rocky 45-degree banks with a shakey head, no shallower than 6-10 feet of water.

More often 10-20 feet is a better depth range.

The Alabama rig is just starting to catch some fish, but only in certain places.

And unlike last year docks have just not been very productive.

The low water doesn’t help, but they don’t seem to even be around deeper docks.

In striped bass news, Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that the bulk of the keepers are being caught way up the Big and Little Saluda Rivers.

That’s not to say they can’t be caught in some other areas, but the best pattern has been pulling live bait on free lines and planer boards as well as throwing double rigs up the rivers.

There are really good numbers of fish up there.

Early in the morning fish are out over the channel in 20-something feet of water, and when the afternoon warms the bays they move into 8-10 feet.

The bite has overall been better later in the day.

When the water temperature really cooled down crappie got extremely finicky, and Brad reports that they were biting very light.

However, things are beginning to level out now and anglers are catching some fish trolling jigs and minnows.

Most of the fish are being caught adjacent to the channel, and if you can find any kind of cover it is concentrating fish.

Fish are very scattered but 12-15 feet has been the best depth range.

No change on the catfish front.

My first Christmas at Epworth

Before age 6, I knew little about Christmas.

We lived in a one bedroom house in Woodruff with my mother, four brothers, and a sister. We had an outhouse, a porch with a wringer washing machine, a tin tub where we took our baths after Mama warmed some water on the woodburning stove and a few clothes that she made on her peddle sewing machine.

Knowing little meant we didn’t miss toys. We just looked forward to our great uncles bringing us fruit, nuts and hard candies.

When I was six, we moved to Columbia to Epworth Children’s Home.

I can remember my first experience writing a letter to Santa Claus. I didn’t know you could do such a thing, writing to someone named Santa who could bring you a toy.

Sitting at a table in the playroom with other girls my age and making a list of what I would like for Christmas was awesome. on Christmas morning we gathered in the playroom where there were stacks of gifts. Each one of us had our turn at opening our gifts but not before we had our devotion time.

Every morning we had devotions and Christmas morning was no different.

After hearing a story about the birth of Jesus, we were allowed to open our gifts. After breakfast, we joyously played with our toys or tried on our new clothes.

My first Christmas at Epworth is still one of the highlights of my childhood.

PCFCU Supports LMC; Foundation Gives back to Harvest Hope Internal Grant Award: No Mo Nausea Bands

Palmetto Citizens Donated over $10,000 to support the Campaign for Clarity

Palmetto Citizens Federal Credit Union generously donated $10,104.06 to the Foundation on November 15. The gift comes from employees and members across the Midlands who purchased pink tumbler cups to support breast cancer programs in

our community during October.

This contribution will support the Campaign for Clarity, helping the Foundation cross the $1.4 million mark raised to date for 3-D mammography at Lexington Medical Center.

The Lexington Medical Center Foundation provided $4,000 for NoMo Nausea Bands, which will be used on all gynecologic surgical patients. These bands are a safe, effective, and non-invasive device that aid in lowering nausea and vomiting post-surgery.

Postoperative nausea and vomiting is a common complication affecting almost 30% of patients with outpatient surgical procedures.

The goal is to expand the use of these bands to all high risk postoperative nausea and vomiting patient populations.

oliday season usually means a lot of activity in the kitchen making holiday treats for family and friends.

What if you wanted to include your cat and/ or dog on the treat list?

What would be a healthy good snack for your pet?

I will give you some tips and recipes. One word of caution, if your pet has a food allergy, check with your veterinarian before making the treats.

You really want to avoid bones as they can cause choking, intestinal obstruction or tears and cracked teeth. You would be better off to try vegetables. Large carrots can often satisfy your pets desire to chew. Baby carrots can be used as training treats or just as a regular treat. You can also try celery, broccoli, zucchini, asparagus and cauliflower. You never know which might appeal to your pet the most.

ommendation for a treat swap for rawhide treats.

You can make your own dehydrated sweet potato wedges. Slice ½-inch to ¾ inch wedges and bake at 250 degrees Fahrenheit for 3 hours. Sweet potatoes are rich in beta carotene, antioxidant vitamins A and C, manganese, and copper.

As long as no one in your house has a peanut allergy, you can use the following recipe to make soft or crunchy treats for your pet. The ingredients are 1.) 4 tbls powdered peanut butter 2.) 2 tbls ground flax seed 3.) 2 tbls ground chia seed 4.) 1 tbls turmeric powder (with black pepper extract if you can find it) 5.) 1 tbls honey 6.) 3 tbls warm water Mix all the dry ingredients together. Next add the warm water and honey. Mix until combined.

For soft treats separate the mix into about 40 bite-sized pieces. I recommend about the size of a dime.

For crunchy treats place the bite sized pieces on a cookie sheet and bake at 300 degrees Fahrenheit for 20-25 minutes or to a pre-

For example, when the queen shocked European royalty by getting married in a white wedding gown, Hale blessed it with her editorial seal of approval.

That started the custom of American brides walking the aisle in snowy white.

But Victoria, and Hale through her, made the biggest impact on the holiday season. Victoria’s husband, her cousin Prince Albert, brought the German tradition of the Christmas tree with him to England.

In 1848, the Illustrated London News published a cover drawing showing the royal family gathered around their Christmas tree.

Britons instantly embraced the Christmas tree and a new tradition was born.

Hale was wildly supportive, of course, and the following year published a copy of the drawing in Godey’s – although she removed Victoria’s tiara and Albert’s royal sash to give the family a more democratic appeal.

Just as had happened on the other side of the pond, Americans went Christmas tree crazy.

By 1860, large pine, spruce and fir trees were harvested in Minnesota, floated down the Mississippi River on flatboats, and sold to eager Christmas tree customers in New Orleans and other Deep South cities.

Hale continued editing Godey’s

Ladies Book until retiring in 1877.

She died two years later at age 90.

That same year, Thomas Edison recited “Mary Had a Little Lamb” into his new phonograph, making them the first human words ever recorded.

And Hale’s greatest legacy of all, the Christmas tree, remains a cherished holiday tradition to this day.
