he lovely brooch pictured here embodies the symbolism and heartfelt emotion of a time long ago. Wrought of Whitby Jet and solid gold, this brooch is from the period of 1860-70.

You will notice the clear theme of three sections or pieces. This was an essential communication during the period of mourning . After the death of a beloved family member, the brooch was worn to publicly proclaim the deep grief experienced by the wearer. The three sections signify “Father, Son and Holy Ghost.” This connection to our heavenly father and the afterlife provided significant comfort in this time of great sadness.

Whitby Jet is a wonderful element of nature. The black mineraloid jet is the compressed remains of ancestors of the monkey-puzzle tree, Salvaged from the cliffs of Whitby , England, it was burned by vagrants for warmth. The jet has been used for centuries to make beads. Clever jewelers gathered the jet and fashioned them into jewelry for the period of mourning.

Whitby jet was a favorite of Queen Victoria after the death of her husband, Albert.

This sort of jet is nearly a century older and completely different from more common glass jet from the 1930 period. Glass

jet jewelry was worn as a decorative accent. What it lacked in emotional validity it gained in visual beauty.

Golf Pointers Never try to keep more than 300 separate thoughts in your mind during your swing.

When your shot has to carry over a water hazard, you can either hit one more club or two more balls.

If you are afraid a full shot might reach the green while the group ahead are still putting, you have two options: you can immediately shank a lay-up, or you can wait until the green is clear and top a ball halfway there.

The less skilled the player, the more likely he is to share his ideas about the golf swing.

If it isn’t broke, try changing your grip.

Golfers who claim they don’t cheat also lie.

Everyone replaces his divot after a perfect approach shot.

A golf match is a test of your skill against your opponent’s luck.

It’s surprisingly easy to sink a 50 foot putt when you lie.

Counting on your opponent to inform you when he breaks a rule is like expecting him to make fun of his own haircut.

Nonchalant putts count the same as chalant putts.

It’s not a gimme putt if you’re still 3 inches away.

The shortest distance between any two points on a golf course is a straight line that passes directly through the large tree.

There are two kinds of bounces: unfair bounces and bounces just the way you intended to play it.

You can hit a two-acre fairway 10% of the time and a 2-inch branch on a tree 90% of the time.

Every time a golfer makes a birdie he must subsequently make three triple bogeys to restore the fundamental equilibrium of the universe.

If you want to hit a 7-iron as far as Tiger Woods try to hit just short of a water hazard.

To calculate the speed of a player’s downswing, multiply the speed of his backswing by his handicap. Example, backswing 20 miles per hour, handicap, 15, downswing 300 m.p.h.

There are two things you can learn by stopping your backswing at the top and checking the position of your hands: how many hands you have, and which hand is wearing the golf glove.

Hazards attract; Fairways repel.

You can put “draw” on the ball, you can put “fade” on the ball, but no golfer can put “straight” on the ball.

A ball you can see in the rough from 50 yards away is not yours.

If there is a ball in the fringe and a ball in the bunker, your ball is in the bunker.

If both balls are in the sand, yours is in the foot-

The inevitable result of any golf lesson is the instant elimination of the one critical unconscious motion that allowed you to compensate for all your errors.

Asking for Directions A man in a hot air balloon realized he was lost.

No Loitering A rookie police officer was out for his first ride in a cruiser with an experienced partner. A call came in telling them to disperse some people who were loitering.

The officers drove to the street and observed a small crowd standing on a corner.

The rookie rolled down his window and said, “Let’s get off the corner people.”

A few glances, but no one moved, so he barked again, “Let’s get off that corner... NOW!” Intimidated, the group of people began to leave, casting puzzled stares in his direction.

Proud of his first official act, the young policeman turned to his partner and asked, “Well, how did I do?”

Pretty good,” chuckled the vet, “especially since this is a bus stop.”

Earnest Prayer As John and his five year old son were headed to McDonald’s one day, they passed a car accident. Usually when they saw something terrible like that, they would say a prayer for those who might be hurt, so John pointed and said to his son, “We should pray.”

What’s inside Mississippi’s pyramids?

MacLeod and Jerry Bellune are spending their children’s inheritance traveling the country and enjoying every minute. Here is an account of their travels from South Carolina to the Southwest and back, a 4,736-mile trip through 11 states.

On the Natchez Trace

Henry Ford did all of us a favor. He offered Americans an affordable way to get wherever they were going.

The Wright brothers did, too. They lifted us to new heights, gave us the capacity to leap tall buildings, to get where we’re going fast.

But between greedy airline bosses and the fanatical jihadists, air travel has

become hell on earth.

That’s why I’ve sworn off commercial air travel.

“Where is America?” Peggy Noonan asks in her inspiring “Patriotic Grace.”

“America is on line at the airport. America has its shoes off, is carrying a rubberized bin and is going through a magnetometer.”

Laughing in line

In going through the TSA line, the security ladies ask for my photo ID. Out comes my driver’s license.

“It’s my grandfather’s,” I joke with them. “He loaned it to me after I lost mine. We look alike don’t we?”

The security ladies smile to show that, yes, they have a sense of humor. A few even laugh out loud.

I can’t do this with the TSA guys. They have zero sense of humor. I use a different tactic with them.

Their job is no fun. They appreciate thanks for professionalism in keeping us safe from mass murderers.

They know I’m no terrorist, just an old guy with a bald head and a smile.

And they know I know they know this. But we dance this little minuet because somebody in Washington says we have to.

So I’ve decided to say no thanks to airline travel.

I’ll take my chances on secondary roads where you stop for lunch if the parking lot’s full and sleep wherever there’s room at the inn.

The mound builders

There is an unexplained inner urge in those born into or who fought their way into power. They want to be remembered, to leave a legacy, to show who they were and what they did.

I call it man’s hunger for an impossible immortality.

I’m not condemning it.

Just noting that it exists.

The pyramid builders of Egypt and Mexico did it centuries ago. So did native American tribal rulers of the Mississippi valley.

They yearned to leave behind evidence of their lives and influence on others.

On the scenic Natchez Trace Parkway, we found at least three examples of this unusual architecture.

Early native Americans were attracted here by the mild climate, abundant game and fertile soil thousands of years before the rest of us arrived.

Eleven earthen mounds are the most prominent re-

mains they left behind.

The first people came about 12,000 years ago but the earliest mounds were built 10,000 years later.

Archeologists believe the mounds were built for another 1,800 years.

The rounded mounds were built as burial places for their leaders.

Later mounds were rectangular, flat-topped earthen platforms on which temples and the homes of chiefs were built.

These tribes were highly organized with roads, commerce, cultural centers and monuments designed to inspire awe ad reverence in superstitious people.

This motivation reminded us of the imposing government structures we saw in the former Soviet Union. Their builders wanted the common people to feel small and intimidated by these shrines to the all powerful bureaucrats who controlled their lives.

The Mississippi mounds are wonders of geometric precision and served as centers of tribal life.

But mound building like the mound builders were in decline as Euro-

peans brought small pox and other diseases which killed thousands of them.

Although the mounds are protected by law, most have been damaged or destroyed by modern development and looters.

Idaho bikers

We walked around a circular path past the mounds wishing we could see what was inside them.

At a picnic shelter, we met six bikers from Idaho.

They told us they were biking the Trace from Natchez to Nashville.

“That’s uphill,” I said.

They looked at me suspiciously then laughed.

It was just a little joke.

They asked where we were from and going.

We said Louisiana, Texas and New Mexico.

They said they hoped we would visit Idaho.

“It’s gorgeous,” one said.
