Patrick Cobb knows how to shop.

That’s because Cobb has been shopping to fill roughly 30 food bags a week for about seven years to deliver to families in need at Saluda River Academy for the Arts.

If you’re doing your math, that’s 1,560 food bags a year.

Cobb and his organization, AARP SC, are among many Lexington County churches, businesses and other community groups that help provide food bags throughout the year to help families in need at some Lexington Two schools.

Cobb, whose parents were both teachers in Lexington Two, first got involved with Saluda River through a friend who taught at the school.

That friend put him in touch with teacher Julia

Claytor, who confirmed the need for food help.

Claytor worked at the time with churches and other organizations to gather food donations for some of the school’s families.

“I thought if I could do that, it would allow her some time back to work Cobb with the children,” Cobb said. Over time, with help from his AARP colleagues, Cobb has made it a priority to fund, shop for, and assemble and deliver food bags to Saluda River.

“I shop for the items, sort them in my garage via a shelving unit, pack the bags and deliver them to SRAA,” Cobb said. “It takes me about an hour to pack a two weeks’ supply of bags.

cups, juice boxes and other items I need to purchase. For the holidays, we packed a larger bag of food items to go home to help provide a few hot meals and breakfasts.”

Numerous churches and organizations give weekly food donations to some Lexington Two families, including Crossroads Outreach Center in Lexington, The Scooter Scott Project, Harvest Hope, Platt Springs United Methodist Church, Transfiguration Lutheran Church and many others.

Cobb said it’s important to give back, adding that the donations are “a great way to help a school with a need.”

“The bags are just a small way of making sure that kids from SRAA don’t go hungry over the weekend,” the Airport High graduate said. “You should never lose sight of your roots.”

Winning essay brings military dad home Special to the Chronicle

A Lexington Elementary fifth-grader’s father will spend the Christmas holiday with his family after his daughter won a contest for military families.

Sofia E. Monaco entered an essay contest sponsored by the Columbia Metropolitan Airport, hoping to inspire the judges with her words. As winner of the “Home for the Holidays” contest, Monaco won a round-trip ticket to bring her father home from Korea for Christmas.

Monaco penned her essay on behalf of her mother and younger sister, Sadie, who daily asks when her dad will be home to stay.

“My daddy takes care of other people and spends his free time in Korea volunteering and making his community a better place to live,” Monaco wrote. “He works very hard, and I know he loves his job and America so much.”

2 District 5 schools win ‘Champions of the Environment’ grants from DHEC Special to the Chronicle Dutch Fork Middle School and Irmo High School have been awarded “Champions of the Environment” grants by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).

Established in 1993, Champions of the Environment has been empowering youth environmental action for 25 years.

DHEC selects eight schools each year as grant winners of $2,000 to be used towards environmental learning.

“This year, Champions of the Environment grant program winners will establish wildlife habitats, and develop learning gardens and outdoor classrooms,” said Amanda Ley, DHEC’s coordinator for the Champions of the Environment program.

“Environmental education programs like the Champions program provide opportunities for students to become engaged in real environmental issues that go far beyond the classroom and hopefully make a lasting impact.”

Dutch Fork Middle’s ACTION for Unity program will use the grant to work with special needs classes on improving an outdoor classroom by increasing plant diversity to attract pollinators.

Last year, a rain garden was established on campus to resolve a storm water runoff issue.

Since that time, students have learned about erosion prevention, water quality and conservation practices.

The Mountain Between Us (PG-13) —

Two strangers (Kate Winslet and Idris Elba) charter a private plane and are marooned when their pilot (Beau Bridges) suffers a stroke, crashing the plane.

They are left alone in the snowy mountains with just the pilot’s dog.

The set-up is such that you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a survival story.

It’s not; it’s a romance.

Now, I love both these leads — I think we all know that Winslet can pull off a romance, and Idris Elba is quite attractive, but the story just doesn’t work.

Ain’t nobody in the mood for sexy time when there are snow-covered mountains and cougars and bear traps between our principal players and civilization.

Brawl in Cell Block 99 (NR) — At the heart

of this film by director S. Craig Zahler is sacrifice and murderous precision, but it’s set inside a larger story of violence and gore, at times so heavy that it is bodily painful to watch.

Flatliners (PG-13) —

Five medical students, chief among them Courtney (Ellen Page), conspire to answer the question of what happens after death by inducing a near-death experience and then resurrecting the volunteer to tell their story.

Great expectations give way to fascinating results with increasingly dire consequences. You don’t mess with the power of life and

death, I guess.

I’ve seen this movie before, and Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon are rolling in their medically induced non-graves.

Honestly, watch the original 1990 version. This remake falls flat.

Killing Gunther (NR) — A group of would-be big-league assassins kidnap a documentary crew to chronicle their attempts to topple an elite assassin named Gunther (Arnold Schwarzenegger).

So the movie is about killing Gunther, like the title says. And the whole thing is just that obvious.

Written, directed by and starring Taran Killam (of “Saturday Night Live” fame), it could — and maybe should — have been a long(ish) skit and left at that.

I’m done with the mockumentary style over substance; I just kept waiting for Jim Halpert to pop into the frame with That Look.

If you plan to be someone else’s designated driver, stick to that commitment.

Your friends are relying on you, and you could save a life.

The holidays should be a time for celebrations and making memories, not a time of nightmares for families.

Unfortunately, alcohol at many holiday events contributes to the number of impaired drivers on our roadways.

Help us spread the message: Even one drink is one drink too many. If you feel buzzed, you are already drunk.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are down to 354.56 (full pool is 360.00), and water temperatures are in the lower 60s down the lake but in the mid-50s up the lake.

It’s been a weird fall for bass fishing on Lake Murray, and veteran tournament angler Captain Doug Lown reports that fishing is pretty tough. 15-16 pounds is a really strong tournament bag right now.

All fall fish never really got into a good shallow pattern, and now it seems as if they have skipped over the fall pattern and gone straight into a winter bite.

The best bet for catching bass seems to be fishing around rocky 45-degree

banks with a shakey head, no shallower than 6-10 feet of water.

More often 10-20 feet is a better depth range.

The Alabama rig is just starting to catch some fish, but only in certain places.

And unlike last year docks have just not been very productive.

The low water doesn’t help, but they don’t seem to even be around deeper docks.

In striped bass news, Captain Brad Taylor (803331-1354) reports that the bulk of the keepers are being caught way up the Big and Little Saluda Rivers.

That’s not to say they can’t be caught in some other areas, but the best pattern has been pulling live bait on free

lines and planer boards as well as throwing double rigs up the rivers.

There are really good numbers of fish up there.

Early in the morning fish are out over the channel in 20-something feet of water, and when the afternoon warms the bays they move into 8-10 feet.

The bite has overall been better later in the day.

When the water temperature really cooled down crappie got extremely finicky, and Brad reports that they were biting very light.

However, things are beginning to level out now and anglers are catching some fish trolling jigs and minnows.

Most of the fish are being caught adjacent to the channel, and if you can find any kind of cover it is concentrating fish. Fish are very scattered but 12-15 feet has been the best depth range.

No change on the catfish front.

Lexington-Richland District 5 names Dr. Christina Melton superintendent-elect Special to the Chronicle

Lexington-Richland School District 5 trustees announced Monday that they have picked veteran educator Dr. Christina Melton to become the district’s next superintendent.

Melton, who is currently the district’s chief instructional officer, will serve as superintendent-elect through June 30, replacing Dr. Stephen Hefner who has announced that he will retirement at the end of the school year.

The announcement was made during a Dec. 11 school board meeting.

“Dr. Melton is regarded as one of the best educational leaders in our state, and we are excited to name her the next superintendent of School District 5,” said Board Chairman Robert

Gantt. “Naming her superintendent-elect helps us ensure the district’s continued success and a seamless transition from one extraordinary superintendent to the next.”

Melton’s career in education spans 23 years, the last nine years with District Five.

She first served District Five as the principal at Nursery Road Elementary from 2007 to 2012 before taking on the director of elementary education role at the District Office.

Melton was named chief instructional officer for District 5 in March 2013, supervising the implementation and evaluation of staff development programs and ensuring district compliance with state standards, laws and regulations.

“It’s an incredible honor,

and I am humbled by the responsibility of leading this great school district,” Melton said.

“In District 5, the focus has and always will be on teaching and learning. My continued mission as superintendent will be on making a positive difference in the lives of children and teachers in our community. We have much to celebrate and much to look forward to in School District 5.”

Melton has been actively involved in several educational boards and organizations.

She has served as chair of the South Carolina Council on Accreditation and School Improvement for the South Carolina Association of Colleges and Schools.

She also sat on the board of directors for the South

Carolina Association of School Administrators.

Her awards and recognitions include: SCASA Administrator of the Year in 2016, the 2012 Superintendent’s Award for Outstanding Leadership and the 2012 Outstanding Contributions in Education Award by the South Carolina Association of School Psychologists.

She was also named South Carolina Elementary Principal of the Year for 20112012.

“I have every confidence that Dr. Melton is well prepared to serve as the superintendent of District 5,” Hefner said.

“She will provide both the continuity and stability needed to effect those changes which will move the District to even higher levels of success.”

Treasurer Curtis Loftis recognized more than 75 fifth-grade students at Oak Grove Elementary School in Lexington today for completing the Future Scholar Financial Literacy program.

“It is imperative to instill financial understanding at a young age,” said Treasurer Loftis. “The Future Scholar Financial Literacy Program is teaching South Carolina students how to make responsible money choices.”

Launched in 2015, the program has brought critical financial education to more than 20,000 students across the state at no cost to tax payers.

“Oak Grove students

had a great grasp on key financial literacy concepts like budgeting and the difference between wants and needs.” Loftis joked, “Although, there was much debate over whether or not an IPhone is a want or a need.”

Treasurer Loftis also surprised Kimberly Trostle, a counselor at Oak Grove, with a plaque naming her Future Scholar’s Teacher of the month for December. Trostle assists with administering the program to students at the school.

Add DASH to your diet: Fighting back against all that holiday overeating

With the New Year come new promises to eat better, lose weight, exercise and improve our health and well-being.

The gluttony of the holidays combined with our good intentions for a new year have us redoing our grocery lists, our pantries and our diets.

Some people are disciplined enough to eat modest amounts of whole foods.

Others, however, appreciate more guidance, and that is when a structured meal plan can be of great value.

The DASH Diet (which stands for "Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension") was developed through research funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health as a way to lower blood pressure and reduce the use of medications.

Studies dating back to its start in 1993 show that it's an effective way to lose weight and reduce the risk of many diseases.

My recipe for The Kitchen Diva's Detox Soup is a nutrition-packed bowlful of goodness that's based on a DASH diet recipe.

This soup has a high amount of potassium, iron and calcium, and is wonderful for cleansing your digestive system and flushing out toxins to kick start a healthier new year.

It contains plant-based proteins, antioxidants and healthy fats, and best of all, you can eat it several times throughout the day, if desired.

Bob began turning the story into a poem. But while he was writing it, Evelyn died.

He was devastated. His boss suggested time off work. Bob shook his head. “I needed Rudolph now more than ever. Gratefully, I buried myself in the work. Finally, in late August it was done.”

Bob read the finished poem to Barbara and Evelyn’s parents. “In their eyes I could see that the story accomplished what I had hoped,” he recalled.

When the book was given to Montgomery Ward customers that Christmas, it was a huge hit. The company gave away 2.5 million copies. By 1946 it had grown to 6 million.

That same year a record company wanted to produce a spoken word version of the poem. But there was a problem: Montgomery Ward owned the rights to Rudolph’s story and image.

Someone took the matter directly to Ward’s big boss, the notoriously crusty, tough as nails Sewell Avery. Yet something touched Avery’s heart. To everyone’s astonishment, he handed over the rights to Rudolph.

A few years later, Bob’s brotherin-law Johnny Marks wrote the famous “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” Bing Crosby, Dinah Shore and others passed on it.

Even then it was the “B Side” to another holiday song.

But Autry changed his tune when “Rudolph” became America’s Number 1 hit song for Christmas week 1949.

It sold 2.5 million copies that year alone, eventually becoming the second best-selling holiday record behind Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas.”

Countless books, TV specials, and cartoons have told the story.

The U. S. Postal Service honored Rudolph with his very own post-

age stamp in 2014.

Bob remarried and had five more children. Rudolph provided him a comfortable income, but didn’t make him rich. He passed away in 1976.

What was his payoff? As Bob May said, “My reward is knowing that every year, when Christmas rolls around, Rudolph still brings happiness to millions, both young and old.”

And just as the other reindeer promised, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer did indeed go down in history.

The little boy looked at him happily and said, “Just keep pulling on that string.

I

t’s true. The Good Book was the genesis of scrapbooking (and, well, many things, of course.)

Remember, in days gone by, The Bible was often the only book a family owned.

Since it was the only bound volume in a home, it was handy to keep records.

Tucked between thin, fragile pages were notes in elegant long-hand verifying when babies had arrived and names they were given.

Deaths of loved ones were penned the same way.

Letters, prayers, even recipes and other information important to a family were recorded in the family Bible.

From time to time, bibles have been donated to the Lexington County Museum.

Deryl is a new Friends of the Lexington County Museum board member.

Scrapbooker was the role she accepted when she came on the board.

“My husband Frank told the Friends I was good at making scrapbooks and nominated me for this position when the museum staff said they wanted someone to manage the official scrapbook,” she explained.

Knowing Deryl would want to record their grandchildren’s development and changes, Frank Macauley had given his wife a camera as a grandmother’s gift when the couple’s grandchildren – Jacob, Colby, Gianluca Steffen and Alise – were coming along.

Deryl’s experience?

“I make scrapbooks for our grandchildren and made one for a daughter as a Mother’s Day gift. They really appreciate them.”

For the museum scrapbook, Deryl collects clippings, invitations and photographs of the history programs and other activities.

The museum scrapbook Deryl lovingly cares for is open to the public during Open Houses, such as the holiday event last weekend.

So, what does she have in common with Thomas Jefferson and Mark Twain?

Jefferson, a Colonial

scrapbooker, created numerous albums during his presidency. Their pages were filled with newspaper clippings that recorded his accomplishments in office.

As for Twain: by the late 1800s when photography was still new, the American humorist also embraced the idea of scrapbooking.

But he didn’t like the clippings sliding out of the albums, so he invented an adhesive scrapbook whose pages were pre-pasted.

Deryl slides museum keepsakes into sleeves to keep them neatly in place.

Now that you know scrapbooking is not a new-fangled idea but one from the Good Ol’ Days, you may want to stick with tradition.

After Christmas dinner, with a fresh pot of coffee, one clean fork and a sliver of pecan pie left, settle in with your family’s album and let the stories unspool.
