13) — The catastrophic failure of the British Petroleum oil rig Deepwater Horizon is dramatized in this heroic thriller directed by Peter Berg (“The Lone Survivor”).

Against the advice of veteran oil-rig honcho “Mr. Jimmy” (Kurt Russell), higher-ups from the oil company (personified by John Malkovich) cut corners — while on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico, leaky pipes take on muck and leak volatile methane.

When the big blast happens, rig-worker Mike Williams (Mark Wahlberg) is the ordinary man rising to extraordinary heights to save as many lives as possible.

While the audience knows disaster is on the horizon, Berg is still effective at ramping up tension and establishing characters we can care

about once things go up in flames. There also is enough well-handled exposition so we non-drillers can understand the preceding events without having to read a manual.

The Birth of a Nation (R)

— Newcomer Nate Parker directs and stars in this retelling of the bloodiest slave revolt in American history. Nat Turner was a slave and a preacher, whose songs and sermons were intended by white masters to pacify and civilize unruly slaves.

As Turner witnesses more cruelty while ministering at different plantations, his tone changes and the scriptures take on a new meaning, culminating in armed insurrection.

While the subject matter has been too-hot-for-Hollywood and loaded with social and emotional weight, there is a surprising touch of cinema entertainment, with an unassailably courageous hero and action that at times looks like a changed-up adaptation of “Braveheart.”

all the plot-twisty, globetrotting spy thrillers out there these days, this one has Ben Affleck playing an underworld accountant/part-time assassin on the autism spectrum.

Christian Wolff (Affleck) has the Hollywood strain of autism — which is the kind that gives characters mathematical superpowers in exchange for poor social skills and occasional fits of overstimulation.

While working for a not-socriminal robotics company, he meets up with Dana (Anna Kendrick), and they are swept up in more trouble with a stony killer who is (really) called Brax (Joe Bernthal).

While Affleck is an unconventional hero, the movie is still bogged down by genre tropes. In trying to make an original protagonist, the film falls prey to Hollywood interpretations of disorders, and tackily implies that autism makes Wolff a more effective murderer — something that rings false to anyone who’s spent significant time with people on the spectrum.

Santa Closet provides wonderful opportunities for Panther Pals

Lexington County School District 3, its mentors, and Panther Pals, wish to sincerely thank St. John’s United Methodist Church for making the 2016 Santa’s Closet Christmas party another success.

Every activity prepared for the children went very smoothly.

The welcome desk was on task and was ready to welcome the mentors and their mentees as they gave them a huge shopping bag and Santa’s dollars to go shopping for their family.

The shopping sprees and the gifts that were available were so surreal that the Panther Pals and their mentors felt as if they were shopping in a department store.

After shopping for their family, the Panther Pals were sent to a special section to select a personal gift of their own choosing.

They then headed downstairs for the wrapping and tagging of their gifts for their family.

Everyone was excited for the mentees when they went to the wrapping sta-

tion to choose the gift wrap for their presents.

Wonderful volunteers were there to make this Christmas a special experience.

While some of the Panther Pals were shopping, others played board games and enjoyed delicious refreshments which the staff had prepared.

A special thanks goes to the youth of St. John’s for volunteering and giving up their Sunday afternoon to assist the Panther Pals.

Their interaction made the children feel very special by spending time and playing games with them.

The Lexington 3 Mentoring Program wishes to publicly thank Pastor Nurse, Mrs. Virginia Clark and the St. John’s congregation for the many years of love and affection that they have shown to the district’s mentees.

The Lexington 3 Mentoring Program has been truly blessed by the members of St. John’s United Methodist Church and the mentors and mentees are most appreciative of all their acts of kindness and generosity.

Chapin Middle School honored nationally as a School to Watch

irls on the Run-Columbia is a positive youth development program for girls in third through eighth grades. Working with small groups in an afterschool setting, GOTRColumbia teaches life skills through fun, engaging lessons that incorporate physical activity.

The program combines training for a 5K running event with lessons and discussions that inspire girls to become independent thinkers, enhance their problemsolving skills and make healthy decisions.

The 21-lesson curriculum is facilitated by volunteer coach-

es who are trained and supported by GOTR-Columbia.

Two seasons are offered (fall and spring), and each one concludes with a fun, noncompetitive 5k event.

Throughout the course of the season, girls develop life skills which help them become leaders who are ready to face life’s challenges and avoid unhealthy behaviors.

GOTR Served over 1,000 girls in 50 locations within the Midlands in 2016.

A lesson of love

A few weeks ago, an elf (on the shelf) named Ted showed up in our classroom.

Ted emails us occasionally, and our class emails him back asking him questions about various things.

One student wanted to ask Ted, "Can you ask Santa to take toys to all of the boys and girls in Africa that don't have any toys?"

Another student added, "Can he also take them things for shelter, too?"

One more student said, "We want them to have a good Christmas, too!"

All of my students agreed, so we asked Ted if he could ask Santa about this.

I would love to take credit for this, but I absolutely cannot. This toy drive was completely student-driven.

I am so blessed to have the opportunity to teach children with such big hearts who care so deeply about those they do not even know.

Little do they know how much they teach me on a daily basis.

The National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform has named Chapin Middle School as one of its Schools to Watch® for the 2016-17 school year.

Irmo Middle School teacher receives Live Fearless grant

Irmo Middle School English teacher Robert McCloy is inspiring his students to Live Fearless.

When he heard about the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina’s Live Fearless campaign inviting teachers across the state to enter a contest describing how they would bring the concept to life in their classrooms, he had the perfect idea.

After seeing the documentary “Finding the Gold Within,” he knew the African drums and shakers used in the film would resonate with his students and benefit them in class.

With over 100 entries, BlueCross BlueShield selected Mr. McCloy as one of the three winners. He received a $950 grant towards purchasing musical instruments for his classroom. McCloy and his students excitedly received the check during class. He thanked BlueCross BlueShield saying, “I’m thrilled! I thought the idea was pretty good and

I’m glad you guys did too.”

McCloy will incorporate drumming and music into writing and reading during his classes. A drumming circle creates a sense of safety, security, and community for students.

The drumming circles will be used during journaling activities. McCloy hopes this will be helpful for students to express their writing and allow them to share their unique voices.

The experience will help students gain confidence in their reading, writing, and speaking skills, capturing the heart of the Live Fearless campaign.

The Live Fearless campaign showcases what has motivated and inspired individuals around the state. “We initiated this campaign last year to encourage and illustrate how South Carolinians ‘live fearless’ every day by breaking new ground, overcoming adversity, and expanding comfort zones,” said BlueCross President Scott Graves. “This particular challenge focused on the wonderful work of teachers who are doing some amazing things in the classroom.”

CSMS students collect donations for Hurricane Matthew victims

Students in Lexington County School District One responded to a need this holiday season by bringing in donations for seven school days in a row.

Carolina Springs Middle School launched its Giv-

ing Tree project on Dec. 8, 2016, as members of the CSMS Student Council challenged their fellow students to give back.

The school collected donations for Palmetto Middle School in Mullins, where 23 students and their families were left devastated by Hurricane Matthew.

CSMS adopted these families with the “Huskies Helping Bulldogs” project and purchased a new book bag for each student.

Student council members then asked CSMS students to fill each bag with donated items including candy, school supplies, hats, scarves, gloves and blankets to show their

support.

In the days leading up to winter break, students brought in the designated items or money from Dec. 8-16.

Students gave nearly $2,400 in monetary donations in addition to filling 23 book bags with donated items.

District 5 students excel at Junior Olympic cross country championships Special to the Chronicle

Seven students from District Five competed in the USA Track and Field National Junior Olympics Cross Country Championships in Hoover, Alabama on Dec. 10.

The 9- and 10-yearold girls team from The Storm Track Club placed fifth in the nation.

The following District Five students competed: Jais Ward (Harbison West Elementary),

Abigail Gopp (Harbison West Elementary), Abigail White (Lake Murray Elementary), Lucy Ricks (Chapin Intermediate), and Taylor Washington (Ballentine Elementary), McKenszie Meier (Dutch Fork Middle) and Alexis Vandervelde (Dutch Fork Middle).

Heading into nationals, Ward was nervous because of the large field, but said, “It was a great experience and I love my teammates. Kids should

try new things because you never know how far it can take you.” Ward finished 13th overall out of 308 runners.

“I am so proud of how well our team performed at the USATF Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships,” said Storm Coach Kimberly Taylor. “They have met and exceeded every challenge that has faced them this season. Our runners work together as a team.”

District 5 GEMS Summer Camp receives $15K grant from Verizon

IRMO — For the second consecutive year, Verizon Wireless will assist in making additional education opportunities possible in Lexington-Richland School District Five.

One of the largest communication technology companies in the world presented a grant for $15,000 to The Center for Advanced Technical Studies (The Center) for the District Five GEMS (Girls in Energy, Medicine and Space) summer camp.

Last June, District Five held its inaugural GEMS camp. Sixty rising eighth and ninth grade girls selected from middle schools in District Five had the opportunity to get first-hand experience in STEM fields

that they may choose as a future career.

Campers took part in activities including engineering futuristic vehicles, hands-on lessons related to brain injuries, and science skills needed to successfully launch rockets. The camp was very successful.

Everyone involved began immediately planning for the 2017 camp with the goal to make it even better.

The Verizon grant goes a long way to funding this special opportunity.

to be more involved in these types of programs,” said Smith. “For them to see these types of career possibilities and have hands-on experience at such a young age is something that we really enjoy supporting and why we choose to help fund GEMS.” District Five Board of Trustees Secretary Ellen Baumgardner was pleased to see the continued funding of the GEMS summer camp.

“It is very thrilling to see these students catch a vision for STEM. And, it is exciting to see companies like Verizon that want to be a part of The Center’s program offerings,” Baumgardner said. “We want to expose our students to different career paths. It is especially great to see our female students exposed to STEM careers.”

Director at The Center Dr. Bob Couch added,

“This grant will help introduce the girls into the STEM program and allows participants to spend a full day in each of the different experiences offered at the camp. They can build a robot—they can build a solar vehicle—so it is

creating interest. But, it is also using their core knowledge and skill. We are thankful for Verizon’s partnership to allow these girls to grow and learn new things. We know the 2017 GEMS camp will be a great success.”

Eat some greens to bring luck in the New Year

F

or many people, the new year is a time for making resolutions and eating certain foods for "luck."

On New Year's Day, eating greens, black-eyed peas and cornbread are thought to bring financial reward.

While I'm not superstitious, I do believe in the health benefits of eating greens.

Greens include any vegetable in the cabbage family that doesn't form a compact head, like collards, mustards, turnips, spinach and kale.

There are several varieties of tasty and unusual types of greens, so be bold and experiment! Dark, leafy greens such as spinach, kale, collards and mustard greens are an excellent

source of many nutrients. Greens contain high amounts of vitamin A and iron, as well as some calcium.

Greens also are packed with antioxidants and are a wonderful addition to any diet.

If the stems of the greens are tough, don't throw them away. There are nutrients in the stems, so chop them up into small pieces and freeze them. You can add the stems to soups and stews, saute them along with onions, or add them to dishes just as you would carrots.

Pot liquor, the highly seasoned liquid that is left after the greens are cooked, is full of vitamins and minerals and is a nutritious drink.

The practice of combining different types of greens is called a "mess of greens" in the South. Cooking a

mixture of greens along with pieces of pork is an integral part of African and African-American culinary history. During times of slavery, if greens were served one day, the leftover pot liquor and a pan of cornbread often made the meal for the next. My vegetarian version for preparing a mess of greens retains the flavorful soul of the recipe, but is much healthier.

While I don't personally believe in luck or eating certain types of food on the first day of the new year, a dish of dark, deliciously fresh greens makes me feel blessed all year long!

MESS OF GREENS • 4 pounds greens (mixture of kale, collards, mustard, turnips or spinach) • ¼ cup olive oil • 1 large onion, sliced

• 1 jalapeno, diced • 6 cloves of garlic, diced • 1 tablespoon sugar • 2 tablespoons salt, divided • 2 tablespoons pepper, divided • 5 cups water • 6 sun-dried tomatoes, sliced, and the oil (optional)

1. Wash greens thoroughly: Remove any brown spots or blemishes, and wash the greens 3 or 4 times in cold water to ensure they are clean and free of insects. Roll the cleaned greens up and slice them into smaller pieces so they'll cook evenly. Remove and reserve any large stems.

2. Using a large pot, season the onions with salt and sweat them in the olive oil over low heat for about 10

to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add the garlic, jalapeno, sugar, salt and pepper to the pot, and saute the mixture for about 5 minutes.

3. Add the greens and water to the pot and continue cooking for 45 minutes to 1 hour over medium-low heat, stirring once after about 30 to 40 minutes. Test the greens for tenderness by piercing the stems with a fork or knife.

Cook for another 10 to 15 minutes, if needed. Season with the remaining salt and pepper.

4. Place the greens in a bowl with the pot "likker." Serve with the sundried tomatoes and the oil, if desired, and the traditional Southern condiments: vinegar, hot sauce, hot peppers in vinegar, wine vinegar and chopped onions.

Cast-Iron cooking I 've joined the cast-iron cookware cult. We're a small but passionate group with a common cause: the restoration of antique cast-iron cookware.

I can't pass up a thrift store or garage sale without purchasing one or two pieces, as long as they're in good condition.

My cast-iron cookware is not just for display; I use it on a daily basis.

My love affair with castiron cookery began when my mother, Angeline, gave me the heavy, black cast-iron skillet that originally belonged to my grandmother.

The thing I love most about cooking in my grandmother's cast-iron skillet is that it's a direct connection to my history and heritage.

I don't fry foods very often, but my heirloom skillet is my pan of choice for the task.

As I stand there turning pieces of fish or chicken in the bubbling, hot oil, I think about all the other women in my family who have done the same with this pan.

Properly seasoned cast iron was the nonstick cookware of its day. It can stand up to high heat and almost any type of utensil.

Cast-iron cookware also leaches small amounts of iron into the food, a helpful benefit for those who have iron deficiencies. Cast iron heats up slowly, so using the cookware requires a little patience,

but once it's hot, it distributes the heat evenly and holds it steadily like an oven, and seasoned cast iron doesn't require oil to sear or blacken meats.

Recently, I purchased a large cast-iron skillet for my daughter, Deanna, which she immediately put to use to pan-sear fish.

So, from mother to daughter to granddaughter and great-granddaughter, the castiron tradition continues in our family, one fabulous meal at a time.

And to think that it all started with a single pan from my grandmother, Willie Mae.

CAST-IRON-STYLE SMOTHERED CHICKEN • 1 large fryer (3 to 3½ pounds), cut up into serving pieces • 1 ½ teaspoons coarse salt • 1 teaspoon pepper • 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning • 2 tablespoons flour • 1 ½ cups water or chicken broth • 1 tablespoon butter

1. Place a large, cast-iron skillet over high heat. Sprinkle the bottom of the skillet evenly with the salt. Wash the chicken pieces and pat dry with food-safe paper towels. Sprinkle pieces with pepper and poultry seasoning. Place the chicken pieces, skin-side down, in the hot skillet. Cook on high for 3 to 5 minutes.

2. Cover skillet with a

heavy lid and turn heat down to medium. The chicken will release juices and fats that will "fry" the chicken and crisp the skin. Let chicken cook about 30 minutes.

3. Remove chicken from skillet and set it aside on a plate. Combine the flour

with the juices in the skillet until smooth, about 2 to 3 minutes. Add the water or broth. Stir to combine. Turn heat to high to thicken. Add the butter. Turn heat down to medium. Place chicken in skillet, skin side up. Cover skillet with the lid. Cook the

Lexington 2 schools getting new furniture

There is excitment in the air among Lexington 2 Schools personnel.

Every school will be allocated funding for the 2017-18 school year for new furniture, and each school will again get to buy furniture for the 2018-19 school year.

The expenditure will be more than $1 million each year.

“The allocation can be spent on classroom furniture or playground equipment, P.E. equipment or for music or other areas in the school,”

said Lexington 2 operations manager Don Isenhower.

School furniture vendors have been at the Lexington 2 District Education Center for two days of the week, the last two weeks. Teachers and district personnel have come in to take a look at the different types of furniture in order to install it in their school.

“The furniture is more mobile and interlocking,” said Dr. Cecil McClary, Principal at Davis Early Childhood Center for Technology. “It provides for more flexibility. I’m really exited about it. It’s very encouraging, even for students.

It’s more effective and more efficient. Teachers love it.”

Lexington 2 Board Member Brad Giles said it has been 20 years or more since some schools have gotten new furniture.

“You can go into the classrooms and see a hodgepodge of different types of desks,” Giles said. He said as the district prepared needs for the 2014 bond referendum that voters passed, furniture was a priority.

“It will give a whole new feeling to the classroom.

It’s uplifting” Giles said, “It makes a difference.”

Isenhower said schools will have half of the furniture replaced in the 2017-18 year and the other half in the 201819 school year.

He also said the needs for each school may be different, and principals can present a budget that targets their priorities, including the cafeteria, playground or music rooms.

In addition to upgrading furniture at existing schools, Lexington will be furnishing the new elementary schools in Cayce and West Columbia and the Career and Technology Center.

It’s a Dog’s Life The Head A naval command instructor was indoctrinating his new naval command recruits.

He said, “You are all in the Navy now and in the US Navy we have our own language.

For instance, in the Navy we don’t call it a bathroom; we don’t call it a toilet; we don’t call it a latrine.”

A young Naval Command recruit raised his hand and asked, “What do you call it?”

The naval recruit said, “Well, I don’t know.”

Temperamental Filly A Kentucky horse breeder had a filly that won every race in which she was entered, but as she got older she became very temperamental.

Longer life A man approaching retirement went along to see the company doctor for one final checkup.

“Is there nothing I can do?” asked the shocked man.

“Well,” said the doctor, “you can give up alcohol, and cut out smoking. Don’t eat rich foods, no dancing, and don’t even think about having marital relations!”

“And this will make me live longer?” the man asked hopefully.

“No,” replied the doctor, “it will just seem longer!”

Obvious Solution The boss ordered one of his men to dig a hole 8-feet deep.

After the job was completed the boss returned and explained an error had been made and the hole wouldn’t be needed. “Fill ’er up,” he ordered.

The worker did as he’d been told. But he ran into a problem. He couldn’t get all the dirt packed back into the hole without leaving a mound on top. He went to the office and explained his problem.

The boss snorted. “Honestly! The kind of help you get these days! There’s obviously only one thing to do. You’ll just have to dig that hole deeper!”

“Well, since we’re confiding in each other,” said the doctor, “I only put $10,000 in the envelope because we needed a new machine at the hospital which cost $20,000.”

The lawyer was aghast.

“I’m ashamed of both of you,” he exclaimed. “I want it known that when I put my envelope in that coffin, it held my personal check for the full $30,000.”

Honest Phlebotomist During a visit to a military medical clinic, I was sent to the lab to have blood drawn.

The technician there was friendly and mentioned that his mood improved every day because he was due to leave the service in two months.

As he applied the tourniquet on my arm, he told me that taking the blood wouldn’t hurt much. Then, noticing my Air Force T-shirt he asked me what my husband did.

When I replied that he was a recruiter, the technician smiled slyly and said, “This might hurt a little more than I thought.”

Hillary has only herself to blame Stop hatred in its tracks online

The Democrats have a simple explanation for Hillary Clinton's loss — the Russians did it.

The party that has had a decades-long soft spot toward Moscow and been reluctant to believe that the Kremlin might have aggressive intentions or, say, cheat on an arms-control agreement is in a frenzy over Russian hacking that supposedly denied Hillary the victory that was rightfully hers.

John Podesta, the chairman of a Hillary campaign that considered accepting the results of an election part of American writ as of about two months ago, refused several times on "Meet the Press" last Sunday to say the presidential election was "free and fair."

In a contest this narrow, anything might have been decisive. But the monocausal Russian explanation for Hillary's defeat ignores her myriad political and ethical vulnerabilities that the Democrats were determined to disregard, despite the obvious evidence of them for years.

Vladimir Putin couldn't have hand-picked a worse champion for them this year.

There was no reason to believe that Hillary Clinton was

a good politician who could deliver a compelling message, since she had never done it before.

The Democratic establishment rushed into the arms of a candidate who, it was clear from the beginning, could well lose to Donald Trump, especially if a few things bounced the wrong way -and is now shocked and outraged that she indeed lost when a few things bounced the wrong way.

Yes, the Russian interference was among those things. But some perspective: The hack of the Democratic National Committee disrupted the early going of the Democratic convention, but the convention was still a wild political success.

Certainly none of them had the effect of the James Comey letter 11 days before the voting, which dominated the coverage for days and led to an immediate slide in Hillary's poll numbers.

This is why Democrats tend to lump in James Comey with the Russians when arguing that the election was hacked, even though he's the director of the FBI, not the FSB. Comey is a public servant who had to grapple with the unprecedented circumstance of a major political party knowingly nominating a presiden-

tial candidate under FBI investigation. Who thought this was a good idea?

Democrats just assumed that everything related to the investigation would go Hillary's way.

She escaped indictment, but two of the worst moments of her campaign came courtesy of Comey, whose public explanation of her handling of her emails wounded her in the summer.

It is true that late-deciding voters broke against Hillary, although it's impossible to disentangle the effect of WikiLeaks, the Comey letter and natural factors, i.e., she was the known quantity running as the quasi-incumbent at a time of great voter discontent, setting her up for a fall at the end.

Democrats are calling for an investigation of Russian interference in the election.

This is entirely appropriate.

But everything points to the Democrats not being able to handle the fundamental truth of what happened on Nov. 8 — they took a flier on a historically weak candidate out of a misbegotten attachment to the Clinton dynasty, and paid a grave price for their foolish mistake.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report BASS: It continues to be a pretty tough fall for bass fishing on Lake Murray, and veteran tournament angler Captain Doug Lown reports that it’s been hard to establish a consistent pattern for catching fish.

Even when anglers find numbers of fish, it has been hard to find good ones – a 4½ pounder has been a big bass in most recent tournaments.

For the most part, Doug says that the fish that he and his tournament partner have been catching have been fairly shallow, and they haven’t caught much in more than 10 feet of water.

Fish are not scattered out in certain depth ranges but instead are holding to certain little spots, and it has been hard to locate them as they move around a lot.

Doug suspects that constantly dropping water levels have forced the fish to constantly reposition.

Vest had served in the Confederate Army. He was elected to the Confederate House of Representatives in 1862, and was appointed to the Confederate Senate in January 1865 — a job lasting as long as the Confederacy itself did, another 90 days.

Back home, Vest started practicing law, and quickly became known as a lawyer who won victories where other attorneys had failed. Vest took Burden’s case, saying he would either win it, “or apologize to every dog in Missouri.”

The small, simple matter involving a dog’s murder was now front page news, with the state’s so-called Big Four lawyers representing each side.

The Old Johnson County Courthouse in Warrensburg was packed when the next trial (the fourth, if you’re keeping count) began on Sept.

21, 1870.

Opening arguments were made.

The defense showed Old Drum was sighted at Haymaker’s Mill and shot there around the same time a different dog was shot at Hornsby’s farm. Things were looking good for Hornsby.

It was time for Vest to make his closing summation. He totally ignored the evidence and merits of the defense, ending instead with what historians consider the most eloquent purple prose ever spoken in a courtroom. He played on the juror’s emotions by praising dogs in general.

Here’s what he told them: “The best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. “He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains.”

The result: Vest’s closing comments won over the jury. It quickly decided in favor of Burden: $50 and court costs. The speech tugged at Victorian heartstrings. It was printed as “Eulogy of the Dog” and appeared in newspapers all around the country.

This led to a widespread (and erroneous) belief that Vest coined the phrase, “A dog is man’s best friend.”

Not true; Prussia’s Frederick the Great said it in the 1700s. But Vest’s speech certainly popularized it.

Hornsby’s lawyers refused to give

up. They appealed all the way to the Missouri Supreme Court, which ultimately sided with Burden in 1872, settling the matter once and for all.

The story went on to be retold many times on film. In fact, there was a even a TV version where Ronald Reagan played George Vest in a “Death Valley Days” episode in 1964.

Vest rode his popularity to the U.S. Senate, where he served with distinction for 24 years. His chief claim to fame: learning that railroad special interests wanted to corner the market on lucrative concession stands in Yellowstone National Park, he won the passage of legislation stopping it, and winning him the nickname “The Protector of Yellowstone.”

Even the late, lamented Old Drum had his post-mortem day in the sun. A statue of him stands outside the Johnson County Courthouse in Warrensburg. There’s also a bust of him inside the Missouri Supreme Court Building in Jefferson City. Not bad for an animal who gained fame simply by wandering onto a neighbor’s farm.

What does all this have to do with losing Sally, you ask? Nothing, really. It just reminds me yet again that dogs are truly special creatures that fill a place in our hearts carved out just for them.

I’m no theologian, and I refuse to jump into the debate over whether animals go to Heaven. But permit me to close with this: if they do go to Heaven, and if I make it there myself, a certain brown-eyed golden retriever/chow mutt will be standing beside St. Peter and wagging her tail in welcome one day.
