It’s gift buying time.

Computers are always a big holiday gift.

In looking for one, keep in mind what it will be used for.

If the computer you are buying will be used for Web surfing and light document creation, look for one less expensive.

When computer people talk about cores, they are referring to the processor.

It’s what drives the computer. Think of the cores as an engine.

If it has a dual core, it has two engines. However, the more cores it has, the more expensive it is going to be. Only those who are using the computer for gaming or image editing will need anything more than a dual-core processor.

Hard drives are already bigger than you will really need. A 500 gigabyte (GB) hard drive will hold about

100,000 images.

The memory in a computer is one of the more important things to look at.

The smaller the memory, the quicker the computer will bog down. Go for the 6GB if you can handle the price jump.

If not, 4GB will work just fine for those general computer usages.

Keep in mind that technology has a lifetime of about 2 to 4 years. I’m not saying it will go bad or spoil. I just mean that it will become outdated for the programs and other

technology after that.

On programs, if the computer comes with Office 365 for a year, consider it a savings of almost $100.

It is my opinion that McAfee and Norton are just not good enough to pay for so I am never impressed when a computer has it already installed.

It’s just more stuff I have to remove.

White perch: Very good. Lake World reports that the most dependable bite continues to be the white perch bite, and anglers are catching fish in the very broad range of 5-60 feet of water. The prime depth range has been 20-30 feet, however, with fish schooled up near the bottom in those depths. Jigging spoons fished vertically are tough to beat once you locate the fish.

his large and impressive silver dome was made in England circa 1800. It features the crest of the royal family that owned it hand engraved on either side.

It is massive in weight – over 15 pounds.

It sits on its original base which features a “well and tree” design that allows the juices from the bird to be collected in a well at the end of the tray for use in keeping the bird moist while it sits on the sideboard.

Silver dishes like this were essential elements of a proper table all year long, yet found their proper place during the season of Thanksgiving. Cooked foods were often brought from the kitchen house so this beautiful piece was actually a kitchen tool.

It kept the bird hot and moist. The domed lid is high enough not to touch the bird yet close enough to function perfectly.

The turkey or group of smaller birds placed inside would have a striking effect on those seated at the table. The raising of the lid by a servant would signal the beginning of a meal of great distinction. Those around the table were treated to a beautiful as well as delicious meal.

The silver dome also provided a sanitary place for the meat to rest. The silver dome

and tray provided anti-microbial protection from many diseases of the day.

The handle of the dome is exceptional as it is decorated with acorns, acanthus leaves and twigs. These elements revered nature while also conveying the health, vitality and strength of the family through their artistry.

For over 200 years this lovely dome and tray have reigned over the holiday table. A centerpiece of great distinction and honor.

Items such as these are a grounding force in turbulent times. Then, as now, the dining table was a place to gather in a congenial manner; finding the pathway to better times ahead.

Space your baits on ledges that range from 5-30 feet. Once the lake clears some and water temperatures begin to drop the baitfish should move deeper, which should cause the catfish to move deeper as well and improve the drift bite.

“Spartanburg is a wellcoached and talented football team. We have to continue to prepare and play to our standard and if we do those things the scoreboard will take care of itself,” Stepp said.

Over the past six games, Lexington has held opponents to 16 points a contest. Limiting scoring opportunities and the steady play of running back Slade Carroll has figured prominently during the Wildcats’ run this season.

“Slade has had a great season and career, but our team as a whole has continued to mature and develop,” Stepp said. “We have been sound and made improvements in the key areas as the year has progressed. Our points allowed per game continues to go down and our rushing yards per game continues to go up. That is a testament to our whole defense and our whole offense. Everyone on defense takes pride in holding the opponent out of the endzone. Everyone on offense takes pride in our ability to run the ball. Total team effort.”

The winner will face either Northwestern or Nation Ford for the Class 4A Division II title Dec. 11 at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia at 6 p.m.

The 2015 Lexington High School football team has history on its side.

With this past Fridays 31-13 win over Blythewood, the Wildcats set a school record with their 12th consecutive victory. The 12th win of the season also tied the 2000 Lexington team for most in program history.

That Demetrius Summer-led team won at Spartanburg 28-24 to advance to the Class 4A Division I final. Fast forward 16 years later and this Wildcats’ edition has a chance to repeat history when they travel to the Upstate to once again face the Vikings for a spot in the state championship game.

“We are proud of the season we are having but we don’t focus on the past,” Lexington head coach Josh Stepp said. “Last week and those 12 wins are behind us. This week our focus is on being 1-0 and in order for us to do that, we have to prepare to our standard.”

Spartanburg (12-1) enters the game winners of five straight since a 20-13 setback to Boiling Springs on Oct. 16. Sick Leave Negotiations between union members and their employer were at an impasse. The union denied that their workers were flagrantly abusing their contract’s sick-leave provisions.

One morning at the bargaining table, the company’s chief negotiator held aloft the morning edition of the newspaper, “This man,” he announced, “Called in sick yesterday!” There on the sports page, was a photo of the supposedly ill employee, who had just won a local golf tournament with an excellent score.

The silence in the room was broken by a union negotiator. “Wow,” he said.

Finding It Billy was excited about his first day at school. So excited in fact, that only a few minutes after class started, he realized that he desperately needed to go to the bathroom. So Billy raised his hand politely to ask if he could be excused.

Of course the teacher said yes, but asked Billy to be quick. Five minutes later Billy returned, looking more desperate and embarrassed. “I can’t find it”, he admitted.

The teacher sat Billy down and drew him a little diagram to where he should go and asked him if he will be able to find it now. Billy looked at the diagram, said “yes” and went on his way.

A short while later he returned to the class room and said to the teacher “I still can’t find it”.

Frustrated, the teacher asked Tommy, a boy who

had been at the school for awhile, to help Billy find the bathroom.

So Tommy and Billy left the classroom together and five minutes later they both return and sat down at their seats.

The teacher asked Tommy “Well, did you find it?”

Tommy was quick with his reply. “Oh sure, he just had his boxer shorts on backwards.”

Business Acumen There was a business man driving down this country road when he spotted a little boy that had a lemonade stand. Since it was quite hot and he was thirsty, he decided to stop.

Once he got up to the little boy’s stand, he noticed a sign that said “All you can drink 10 cents,” and a single, very small glass.

Well, he thought that it was a very small glass, but since it was only 10 cents for all he could drink, he decided to get some any-

way.

He gave the boy a dime, and shot down the whole glass in one swig. He slapped the glass back onto the table and said, “fill ‘er up.”

The kid replied, “Sure thing, that’ll be 10 cents.”

To this the business man said, “But your sign says all you can drink for a dime.”

“It is,” the little boy replies, “that’s all you can drink for a dime.”

Ultimate trip: the Red Planet

MacLeod and Jerry Bellune are spending their children’s inheritance traveling the country and enjoying every minute. Here is an account of their travels from South Carolina to the Southwest and back, a 4,700-mile trip through 11 states.

What if you could go, all expenses paid, to Mars, the Red Planet?

Some of us are going to do that one day soon.

Trite as it may sound to you, all of us have a choice about our life’s journey.

We can make it a dull 9-5 existence or an exciting adventure. It’s our choice.

We are doubly blessed to live in America. We have choices and options millions of others don’t have.

MacLeod and I choose to live adventurously.

We followed poet T.S. Eliot’s dictum that “Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.”

NASA engineer Kathryn Crowe is a fine example.

Kathryn grew up in Huntsville, the Rocket City where NASA was born.

“The first rocket was built here,” she says. “When you drive through town, there’s a Saturn V sitting upright next to the main highway.

“It’s the rocket that took us to the moon.”

Kathryn now enjoys exciting work as we plan to explore new

worlds.

All of us have marveled at space shots on TV. Some may have visited Cape Canaveral and Houston.

But Huntsville is where it all started and where it continues today in our quest to travel to other planets.

In the beginning

During the final months before Apollo 11 took us to the moon 46 years ago, Wernher von Braun and his team refined the giant rocket that made it possible.

Dr. von Braun envisioned another important project — this permanent museum to show the marvels of the space program and all of the revolutionary products that helped create it.

Dr. von Braun urged Alabama officials to help create this museum and Alabama citizens voted in 1968 to pay for it with land donated by the U.S. Army at its Redstone Arsenal here.

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center was born.

Since opening in 1970, nearly 16 million people have visited it, the majority like us from out of state or from foreign countries.

We stopped outside the

main exhibit hall to take a photo of a mother and her daugther with their camera and they returned the favor.

Into space for a day

Inside we found interactive exhibits that made us feel like astronauts.

We watched children in safety harnesses go up the Mars Climbing Wall like little monkeys. This was designed to give them an idea of what they might face on the volcano known to mankind, Olympus Mons.

This is a treat for any kid who dreams of Mars. The red planet is a dangerous place — cold, rocky and lifeless — yet an extreme sports lovers’ paradise.

Endless hiking trails, the deepest canyons and the tallest volcanoes would challenge even the most adventurous athlete.

We could have spent more than a day here.

Like excited children on Christmas morning, we watched every movie and tried every hands-on exhibit we could crowd into two hours. That included making a video of MacLeod dancing in an x-ray showing her skeletal structure.
