When a computer misbehaves in our office, I’m the first one they run to.

Usually, it’s a pretty easy fix. But there are times even I am stumped.

Monday was one of those days. A laptop would turn on and seem to start trying to run, but all we would get is a

black screen.

I’ve talked about the blue screen of death where a computer that is already running tends to blue screen and throw an error. Well Monday, it was the black screen of death.

Generally speaking, it is not a good sign.

If a computer won’t even boot into the startup process, it could mean a hard drive failure.

It really isn’t a big deal.

Hard drives are replaceable.

But for most of us, it can be a huge pain and a huge cost.

It can also mean a bad screen.

With a bad laptop screen, the computer will sound like it is booting but the screen won’t show any sign of life.

The easiest way to check this is to hook up a monitor to the laptop.

Almost all real laptops come with a blue VGA plug somewhere on the computer. Just as you would with a desktop, hook a monitor to it and see if it shows anything.

If it does, you need a replacement screen. If not, you need to keep looking.

In this case, I knew it wasn’t the monitor because the screen glowed a bit when it turned on

but stayed generally black. I was really worried it was the hard drive.

So off to Google I went to try and find a helpful solution to get it working at least for the day. All I needed was one good boot and I could find the problem.

I found a gem of a message board that gave me an idea.

It said to unplug the laptop, power it down, take out the battery and wait 10 seconds. Then put the battery back in and hold the shift key and the F8 key while pushing the power button.

I thought, what a crazy idea but it seems like a quick thing to try.

I did each thing as it said and the computer booted not 5 seconds after I hit the power button. And it booted right on through just like it should.

I do not know exactly what failed on the computer but I do know that this darling, impatient person decided to not wait for the computer to power down and cut it off in the middle of shutting down.

A little lesson: there is a reason shutdowns can take a long time.

If none of these things work for you in a time of crisis, you may just be looking at replacing the hard drive.

Let me advise you to call and ask for prices.

Sometimes it will cost you less to buy a new computer than to try and replace a hard drive.

FISHING REPORT LAKE MURRAY: Catfish: Good. Captain Chris Simpson reports that the bite is pretty good right now and fishing has been relatively consistent. The most reliable way to locate aggressive fish has been drifting with cut herring and shad and the most productive depth range has been 25-55 feet of water. Creek and river channel ledges are holding fish but do not overlook flats that have roaming catfish scattered across them. Anglers need to be prepared to adjust to different depth ranges almost daily as the baitfish and catfish are constantly changing areas and depths. Chris’s boat has been catching decent numbers of big channel catfish as well as a bonus big blue or three on most days.

Striped bass: Fair to good. Lake World reports that striper are scattered all over the lake, but the best action has come from the mid-lake up. That is not to say that fish cannot be caught as far down the lake as Jake’s and the dam, but the best numbers of fish are further up. As always in the cooler months look for birds to help locate fish, and particularly seagulls. The presence of loons is a less reliable indicator that striper may be feeding in the area, although loons are a good indicator that bait is present. On days when fish are schooling a variety of lures will catch them, but if schooling activity is not apparent then dragging freelined live herring or dropping down-lined herring down to 20 or 30 feet can be effective. Cut bait has also been very effective on the bottom in 4-20 feet of water, particularly up the rivers.

Palmetto Champions’ Lower State Coach of the Year (Josh Stepp)

The 2015 high school football season is officially in the books.

The same is true for Thursday Morning Quarterback. After 15 weeks dating back to the dog days of August, it’s time to put this weekly column on the shelf for another eight months.

Before closing the book, how­ ever, let’s take a look back at some of the more memorable moments of the past prep foot­ ball season:

28­7 home loss to Blythewood and ended with a 63­13 trouncing at the hands of Northwestern at Williams­Brice Stadium. amazed the prep football world in South Carolina. Who will ever for­ get his epic duel with Swansea’s Chance Walker, a contest which stretched over two days and saw both players combine for 15 touchdowns and over 800 yards.

Putting up lofty numbers was a weekly habit for Bailey, who fin­ ished his prep career among the five more prolific touchdown scorers in South Carolina and Of­ fensive Most Valuable Player hon­ ors at the Touchstone Energy Co­ operatives Bowl.

CLUSION Even in 8­man football, a rash of injuries can result in a roster shortage.

This is exactly what happened to W.W. King Academy. After eight games, the Knights had run out of players and were forced to forfeit their remaining four games.

This marks the second straight year in Chronicle Country a coaching change will come due to retire­ ment.

South Carolina High School League’s new realignment plan has five Lexington County teams (Dutch Fork, Irmo, Lexington, Riv­ er Bluff and White Knoll) altogeth­ er in Region 5­4A. While Chapin is now in Class 4A, Edisto, Brookland­Cayce, Gil­ bert, Swansea and Pelion will all co­habit Region 5­3A. Gray Collegiate Academy will finaly get to play in the post­season as a mem­ ber of Re­ gion 3­2A and Batesburg­ Leesville re­ turns to the Lower State in Region 5­2A.

The South Carolina United youth boys soccer team raised money throughout the month of October for the Crystel Smith Breast Cancer Fund, a program that helps cancer patients through the Lexington Medical Center Foundation. Knock on Wood Three older ladies were discussing the problems of getting older. One said, “Sometimes I catch myself with a jar of mayonnaise in my hand, in front of the refrigerator, and can’t remember whether I need to put it away, or start making a sandwich.

The second lady chimed in, “Yes, sometimes I find myself standing on the stairs and can’t remember whether I was on my way up or on my way down.”

The third one responded, “Well, I am glad I don’t have that problem; knock on wood,” as she rapped her knuckles on the table.

She looked up and said, “That must be the door, I’ll get it!”

Bus Route Troubles Joe drove a bus for a living, but he could never finish his route right on time.

After he finished his route, he would always have to explain to his supervisor why he was early or late. “I was stuck behind a big truck,” he explained one day, after arriving ten minutes late.

Thinking that the bus driver was not taking his job seriously enough, the supervisor pressed him on the issue. “But Joe, yesterday you were ten minutes early.” reminded his boss.

“Yeah,” said Joe, “But yesterday, I was stuck behind a Porsche.”

Parrot Union A man entered a pet shop, wanting to buy a parrot. The shop owner pointed out three identical parrots on a perch and said, “The parrot to the left costs 500 dollars.”

“Why does that parrot cost so much?” the man wondered.

The owner replied, “Well, it knows how to use a computer.”

The man asked about the next parrot on the perch.

“That one costs 1,000 dollars because it can do everything the other parrot can do, plus it knows how to use the UNIX operating system.”

Naturally, the startled customer asked about the third parrot.

“That one costs 2,000 dollars.”

“And what does that one do?” the man asked.

The owner replied, “To be honest, I’ve never seen him do a thing, but the other two call him project manager!”

The Parent Test THE MESS TEST Smear peanut butter on the sofa and curtains. Place a fish stick behind the couch and leave it there all summer.

THE TOY TEST Obtain a 55 gallon box of Legos (or you may substitute roofing tacks). Have a friend spread them all over the house. Put on a blindfold. Try to walk to the bathroom or kitchen.

Do not scream because this would wake a child at night.

THE GROCERY STORE TEST Borrow one or two small animals (goats are best) and take them with you as you shop. Always keep them in sight and pay for anything they eat or damage.

THE DRESSING TEST Obtain one large, unhappy, live octopus. Stuff into a small net bag making sure that all the arms stay inside.

THE FEEDING TEST Obtain a large plastic milk jug. Fill halfway with water. Suspend from the ceiling with a cord. Start the jug swinging. Try to insert spoonfuls of soggy cereal into the mouth of the jug, while pretending to be an airplane. Now dump the contents of the jug on the floor.

THE NIGHT TEST Prepare by obtaining a small cloth bag and fill it with 8-12 pounds of sand.

Soak it thoroughly in water. At 3:00 pm begin to waltz and hum with the bag until 9:00 pm. Lay down your bag and set your alarm for 10:00 pm.

Get up, pick up your bag, and sing every song you have ever heard. Make up about a dozen more and sing these too until 4:00am. Set the alarm for 5:00 am. Get up and make breakfast. Keep this up for 5 years and look cheerful.

THE INGENUITY TEST

Take an egg carton. Using a pair of scissors and pot of paint, turn it into an alligator. Now take a toilet paper tube and turn it into an attractive Christmas candle. Use only scotch tape and a piece of foil.

Last, take a milk carton, a ping-pong ball, and an empty box of Cocoa Puffs.

Make an exact replica of the Eiffel Tower.

THE AUTOMOBILE TEST Forget the BMW and buy a station wagon. Buy a chocolate ice cream cone and put it in the glove compartment. Leave it there.

Get a dime. Stick it into the cassette player. Take a family size package of chocolate chip cookies. Mash them into the back seat.

Run a garden rake along both sides of the car.

There... ...perfect.

THE PHYSICAL TEST (Women) Obtain a large bean bag chair and attach it to the front of your clothes. Leave it there for 9 months. Now remove 1/2 of the beans.

Leave it on for the rest of your life.

THE PHYSICAL TEST (Men) Go to the nearest drug store. Set your wallet on the counter. Ask the clerk to help himself. Now proceed to the nearest food store. Go to the head office and arrange for your paycheck to be directly deposited to the store. Purchase a newspaper. Go home and read it quietly for the last time.

THE FINAL ASSIGNMENT Find a couple who already have a small child.

Lecture them on how they cam improve their discipline, patience, tolerance, toilet training and child’s

table manners.

Suggest many ways they can improve. Emphasize to them that they should never allow their children to run wild. Enjoy this experience. It will be the last time you will have all the answers.

The kids all sat in silence.

“I’ll give you another clue,” she said. “He climbs trees and sleeps in the winter.”

Still no reply from any of the children.

“Can’t you guess?” said the teacher, sounding a little frustrated now.

“He eats nuts, climbs trees, has a big fluffy tail who could he be?”

After a long pause, one little boy put his hand up very hesitantly. “I know the answer’s Jesus,” he said, “but it sure sounds like a squirrel to me.”

We became 15-minute celebrities MacLeod and Jerry Bellune are spending their children’s inheritance traveling the country and enjoying every minute. Here is an account of their travels from South Carolina to the Southwest and back, a 4,736-mile trip through 11 states.

Lexington, Miss.

We may not be as wellknown as Santa Claus in Lexington, Miss.

But, as pop artist Andy Warhol famously said, “All of us will have at least 15-minutes of fame.”

Our minutes of fame came on the front page of the Holmes County Herald.

When we started this 4,736-mile journey by car right after the October floods hit our area, we had: • An ultimate destination, Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico.

• An idea it would be fun to visit other Lexingtons along the way and pay a visit to their newspaper publishers and editors.

Destination Lexington

We had stopped by the Oglethorpe Echo in Lexington, Ga., and visited Lexington, Ala., which was too tiny to have its own newspaper.

But we found the Holmes County Herald in Lexington, Miss., online and figured it was a must see.

Lexington has 2,000 residents in a county of 19,000 named for its first governor, a bachelor, and home of the great blues guitarist and singer B.B. King.

As we drove into town we found the main road wraps around the courthouse, a handsome two -story brick building topped with a clock tower. The clock was actually on time.

The Herald offices are just across the street in a one-story brick storefront.

MacLeod guided our car into a parking place within

easy walking distance.

The reluctant journalist

We opened the front door and stepped into the office.

It is a large, open room, apparently once a showroom for a retail store.

Now it is lined with desks and a front counter, chairs for visitors and a well-used shelf of books. I resisted the urge to check the books.

You can tell a lot about people from what they read.

General Manager Julie Ellison looked up from her desk, rose and greeted us.

“How may I help you?” she asked cordially.

“We’re interested in a full page ad,” I said.

That usually gets attention in newspaper offices.

Julie smiled broadly and said, “I can help with that.”

I removed a copy of the Lexington County Chronicle from under my arm and handed it to her.

“We’re just a couple of small town newspaper folks who came to see what you do with yours each week.”

“Oh,” she laughed. “Give me a minute. I’ll get Bruce.”

Bruce and Libby Hill are the owners and publishers.

Bruce, a man in his 60s, emerged from a back room in shirt sleeves.

Bruce, we soon learned, is one of those rare newspaper people who did not want it as a career.

Bruce grew up in Memphis, Tenn., where his father sold advertising for the daily Press-Scimitar.

Until it closed its doors in 1962, the feisty afternoon newspaper was led by crusading editor Ed Meeman who later left a fortune to foster the study of environmental sciences.

Bruce’s father helped him win a job designing newspaper ads but it was not a great experience.

When a local banker of-

fered Bruce a job, he took it only to discover the bank paid less than the Scimitar.

So hat in hand, he asked for and got his job back.

Now here he is years later, operating his family’s own small newspaper and, I hope, loving it.

In a few minutes, Libby came out from the back and joined us, as did their editor Matthew Breazeale.

Matthew brought his camera to take a photo of the visitors and make a few notes on who we were and what brought us to the Mississippi delta country.

We spent the next hour in shop talk, about how our readers are growing older and how we might harness the power of the internet to serve our communities.

I won’t bore you with the details. But I will tell you this. When we arrived home in Lexington, S.C. weeks later, a copy of the Holmes County Herald was waiting in our mail box.

And what do you think graced the front page? A photo of an aging editor and his beautiful bride.

Now we can go quietly into the night, knowing we’ve had our 15 minutes of fame in Lexington, Miss.
