Lake Murray: Bream: Good. Lake World reports that the shellcracker bite remains very strong, both for sizes and numbers of fish. Concentrate in 4-10 feet of water and fish worms on the bottom.

Striped bass: Good. Lake World reports that striper continue to school all over the lake, and looking for schooling activity is the best way to catch keeper-sized fish. Schooling can take places in coves or out in open water, and it can happen all day long. Some days the best schooling activity has been mid-afternoon. There is also some down-line fishing as deep as about 30 feet, and with cooling water temperatures and fish moving shallower free-lining is also becoming more productive.

Sick Leave Negotiations between union members and their employer were at an impasse. The union denied that their workers were flagrantly abusing their contract’s sick-leave provisions.

One morning at the bargaining table, the company’s chief negotiator held aloft the morning edition of the newspaper, “This man,” he announced, “Called in sick yesterday!”

There on the sports page, was a photo of the supposedly ill employee, who had just won a local golf tournament with an excellent score.

The silence in the room was broken by a union negotiator. “Wow,” he said.

“Think of what kind of score he could have had if he hadn’t been sick!”

Goldfish Burial Little Tim was in the garden filling in a hole when his neighbor peered over the fence. Interested in what the cheeky-faced youngster was up to, he politely asked, “What are you up to there, Tim?” “My goldfish died,” replied Tim tearfully, without looking up, “and I’ve just buried him.”

Finding It Billy was excited about his first day at school. So excited in fact, that only a few minutes after class started, he realized that he desperately needed to go to the bathroom. So Billy raised his hand politely to ask if he could be excused.

Of course the teacher said yes, but asked Billy to be quick. Five minutes later Billy returned, looking

more desperate and embarrassed. “I can’t find it”, he admitted.

The teacher sat Billy down and drew him a little diagram to where he should go and asked him if he will be able to find it now. Billy looked at the diagram, said “yes” and went on his way. A short while later he returned to the class room and said to the teacher “I still can’t find it”.

Frustrated, the teacher asked Tommy, a boy who had been at the school for awhile, to help Billy find the bathroom.

So Tommy and Billy left the classroom together and five minutes later they both return and sat down at their seats. The teacher asked Tommy “Well, did you find it?”

Tommy was quick with his reply. “Oh sure, he just had his boxer shorts on backwards.”

Timely Speech The CEO of the company was giving a speech at the annual shareholders’ meeting. Enthused about his company’s performance and the prospects for the next year, he lost track of time and spoke for two hours.

Finally, he realized that he had been speaking for too long and apologized, saying, “I’m sorry I talked so long. I left my watch at home.”

A voice from the back of the room piped up, “There’s a calendar behind you.”

At one time the world’s greatest naval weapon, the two-block-long, 15-story tall USS North Carolina today rests in her berth on the Cape Fear River.

Appearances can deceive any of us.

Our friend Charlie Farrell was a Marine Corps rifleman when he learned he could apply for flight school.

That led to a distinguished career as a Marine Corps fighter pilot.

When I was a lowly 7th Infantry Division grunt slogging through the mud, the U.S. Army had no flight schools to offer.

But I wondered if I had not made a mistake by failing to enlist in the Navy.

The Navy feeds you three hot meals a day, gives you a warm, comfortable bunk and occasional shore leave.

It may not be home but it beats frigid foxholes.

That memory came back to me as we gingerly navigated the ladder to go below decks on the USS North Carolina berthed here.

Below decks

In the sleeping area, the admiral had a suite, the senior officers their own private rooms, the junior officers double bunks, the chief petty officers their own quarters and the seamen bunks five deep.

If you were on the top bunk, you had to do some climbing to get there.

It reminded me of the troop ship USS Gen. A.E. Anderson that transported me and about 5,000 other troops to Korea.

The bunks on the North Carolina had mattresses.

Ours on the Anderson were canvas stretched over a metal frame and stacked six bunks high.

We had emailed Heather Loftin at the North Carol-

lina to ask the best time for a visit. She emailed back to come whenever we could.

We arrived on a sunny but blustery day at 1 Battleship Road on the Cape Fear River across from downtown Wilmington.

We had a chance to visit with Heather on board and learn the ship’s history.

In the beginning

When the North Carolina’s keel was laid in October 1937, she was the first battleship built in 16 years and the first of 10 fast battleships in World War II. At the time, she was considered the world’s greatest naval weapon, armed with nine 16-inch guns and 20 five-inch 38 caliber guns.

She’s two city blocks long and 15 stories tall.

She was manned by 144 commissioned officers and 2,195 enlisted men, including about 83 Marines.

In World War II, she participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific and earned 15 battle stars.

In the Battle of the Eastern Solomon Islands in August of 1942, her antiaircraft barrage helped save the carrier USS Enterprise.

From that, her primary mission became to protect aircraft carriers.

One of her pilots performed heroically during the strike on Truk when he rescued 10 downed Navy fliers on April 30, 1944.

In all, she carried out nine shore bombardments, sank an enemy troopship, destroyed at least 24 enemy aircraft, and assisted in shooting down more.

Her anti-aircraft guns helped halt scores of attacks on aircraft carriers.

Although Japanese radio announcements claimed six times that the North Carolina had been sunk, she survived many close calls including a Japanese torpedo which slammed into her hull. Her crew’s quick response allowed her to keep up with the fleet.

By the end of the war,

she lost only 10 men in action and 67 wounded.

She was decommissioned in June 1947 and placed in inactive reserve in Bayonne, N.J. for the next 14 years.

Save Our Ship

In 1958, the Navy announced plans to scrap her.

World War II veteran James S. Craig rallied his Wilmington American Legion post members to take action and develop a plan to bring the North Carolina to her home state.

Community leaders in all of North Carolina’s 100 counties started fundraising for the Save Our Ship (SOS) campaign.

The effort succeeded.

The battleship arrived in her current berth in October 1961 and was dedicated in April 1962 as the state’s memorial to its World War II veterans and the 10,000 North Carolinians who died in the war.

The ship is open every day of the year.

Summer hours: Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day 8 to 8, except Independence Day when it closes at 5.

Winter hours: 8 to 5 except Christmas Day when the ship opens at noon.

The self-guided tour takes at least two hours.

Admission 12 and over: $12, seniors 65 and over $10 and active or retired with military ID $10.

RONT orch P F Quarry battle a fight to maintain a way of life

LEESVILLE — If you could see it, residents say, you'd understand.

Out of sight from the county's main roads, sits a little piece of heaven in Lexington County near Leesville.

Drive through God's green acre here and you'll find winding roads framed by dense forest that suddenly give way to open vistas of rolling hills, farmland, ponds and lakes.

While the county has boomed, this quaint area off U.S. Highway 1 has stayed much the same, populated largely by deeply rooted families and farms that go back generations.

Stop for a spell and get out of your car and the sound of silence is overwhelming, and peaceful.

But, perhaps, not for long.

The area has layer upon layer of granite that the Alabama-based Vulcan Materials Company wants to mine to use as fill, construction material and other purposes. To get at it will require big equipment and big explosions, and big trucks to take it to market.

Residents here fear the worst: noise, pollution, dust, water degradation and depletion, among other things, they fear will ruin not only their land but their very way of life.

Jane Griffin, a retired widow who lives right next to the proposed quarry, frets as she sits with fellow residents in her parlor and points out a window to a spot where one day she expects to see and hear explosions.

“I've been here over 50 years,” said Griffin. “Of course I don't want to be looking at it right out there in my front yard. If the quarry comes, what am I supposed to do? Where am I going to go? I don't really know what to do.”

Warriors to the end

On a beautiful, serene day at Miss Jane's house sit a band of warriors. They consist of Catherine Hite, Mundina O'Driscoll, and local farming couple Nelda and P.C. Rikard. With the exception of O'Driscoll, all live within easy distance of the proposed mine and have lived on their properties for decades.

Moving is not an option, they say. So instead they fight.

They are all members of the Ridge Protection Coalition, a group organized to fight the mine. It's been tough sledding so far. The group feels that the County Council, which they say has never visited their area, has left them in the lurch against the bully that is Vulcan. So they hope for the best from the state when Vulcan eventually seeks permits to mine its hundreds of acres off Windmill Road.

Failing that, they said, they are willing to fight the mine all the way to court if

necessary.

They also contend that if county residents only knew this hidden jewel existed, more could be done to stop Vulcan, and perhaps more future mining in the county, which they believe is inevitable. The county is not only rich in subterranean rock, but also special sands that could be mined for use in the fast-growing practice of natural gas fracking.

“This is not one little deal that's going to effect a little five-mile area, this is Lexington County as a whole,” Hite warned.

O'Driscoll, who lives 15 miles away but has a daughter living in the area, has taken the Vulcan fight head on. She said she and others aren't opposed to mining.

But here? she asked. “This just isn't the area to be doing that,” she said.

“The County Council hasn't driven out here. The governor hasn't driven out here,” O'Driscoll said. “We have a feeling that a lot of people are thinking this is a trailer-trash kind of community. But it's not. It's a gem

out here.”

The Rikards farm the area, which is fed entirely by wells. The mine, said P.C. Rikard, will ruin and deplete the water in the Hollow Creek watershed, impacting not only farmers but all others in the area as well.

And, adds O'Driscoll, an earthquake fault runs through the proposed site, prompting fears of seismic activity from explosions used in mining operations.

Local bee colonies also will be severely impacted from the dust kicked up by the mine, Griffin said. And truck traffic in and out of the mine will only add to their headaches, making this quiet corner of the world unbearable to live in.

Hite said the stress of it all has caused a lot of sleepless nights.

“This land has been in my husband's family since the 1800s,” Hite said. “He still farms the land. We have cattle. This is home. I have a hundred acres. I could sell that land and go buy a new house. But I don't want that. You can't

Yes, Hite said, if people could only see this place, they'd understand.

“Come out and look at what they're going to destroy,” she said. “We have

townspeople who ride out in this area in the fall just to see the beauty. The golden leaves, the soybean fields, the cattle and the hay. A lot of people in Lexington County don't realize this

type of area still exists.”

“It's a gem,” adds O'Driscoll, her voice rising.

“And they want to put a quarry in the middle of it!”
