When you drive up, look around to check that the area is clear and keep your doors locked.

Once you have the gift, put it in a secure area of your vehicle where it’s not visible, especially if you plan on leaving it in there for some time.

If a new TV or video game console is out in your back seat, thieves won’t hesitate to break your window.

Your trunk is the most secure area of your car to store gifts, but remember to periodically check that they’re still there.

Holiday shopping can be stressful, but if you take the extra steps and use caution, your biggest concern will only be whether you got the perfect gift.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are down to 354.72 (full pool is 360.00), and water temperatures are in the mid-60s.

In striped bass news, Captain Brad Taylor (803331-1354) reports that despite moderate water temperatures fish have really worked their way up the river where a lot of the better fish can now be found – in addition to the back part of creeks all over the lake.

There is some schooling activity, and you can catch those fish on double rigs and bucktails.

However, the most productive way to fish most of the time is with free lines and planer boards.

Every day the

bite is different and fish are still very scattered, so you have to keep zigzagging until you find where they want to hold on a given day.

A few birds have showed up but in the next couple of days there should be a lot more with the cooler weather.

You can still catch striper down the lake on down-lines but you really have to pick through the

little ones.

On the crappie front, Brad reports that the fishing has been good.

The fish are on the move following threadfin shad, and because of that you have to cover a “pile” of water to find them.

Broadly speaking crappie are set up in the mouths of coves and creeks following bait, and they are also around brush in 15-20 feet of water.

If you can find docks with enough water they may hold crappie.

Catfish are also biting well, and Captain William Attaway (803924-0857) reports that the bite is good in 30-50 feet on herring, shad and perch.

The action should continue to get better as it gets colder.

The Old Mill Antique West Columbia is not a haven for big box giants.

Instead, it has a reputation for catering to shoppers in search of special items.

“We have many unique gifts that you may not find at other stores,” said Welton.

She also said the store has also been the victim of an identity crisis, of sorts, in years past.

“People would not see “eclectic” house, they would see “electric,” Welton said. But over the years the name has become more solidified in the mind of the clientele.

The Crafty Cottage is a relatively new business that opened at 831 Meeting St. in West Columbia in August.

“We get a lot of business,” said Tina Floyd, manager of The Crafty Cottage. The retail business is housed in an ornate 1911 structure and displays the work of 14 different local artisans.

The Crafty Cottage offers Ms. Judy’s hand-crafted figurines, three generations of the same family that produce egg-blown art, paintings and Clemson and Carolina collectibles.

Floyd said she has appeared on WOLO-TV 25 in Columbia with Tyler Ryan.

On the televised segment, Floyd said she wanted to create a “retail venue for artisans” with classrooms and space for parties. Instructional sessions on painting, craft-making and other skills are regularly held at The Craft Cottage.

“We are a place where you can come to learn crafts,” Floyd said.

Mall, owned by Margaret Causey, recently celebrated its 30th anniversary by expanding its sales floor.

“We’re quite busy this time of the year,” said Paul Tyler, an Old Mill Antique Mall associate.

Tyler said the antique mall conducts sales specifically to bring in holiday buyers.

All year, and especially during the holidays, West Columbia offers a unique shopping experience.

Not only will you find one-of-a-kind items, the visit to these shops promises to be a warm, friendly and possibly sentimental journey.

Silver Foxes win second-straight state title

The “Payback Tour” was the “Victory Tour” for the Dutch Fork football team.

For the second straight year, the Silver Foxes are the state’s lone Class 5A champions.

The 28-27 nail-biter over Dorman at Williams-Brice Stadium last Saturday was also the third title in the last five years won under Coach Tom Knotts.

Counting his legendary days at Independence High School in Charlotte, N.C., he now has 10 state titles in his trophy case.

Their playoff winning streak at 10 games, Dutch Fork (13-1) also avenged their only other loss since the end of the 2015 season.

The Dorman Cavaliers routed the Silver Foxes 4919 in the second round of the Class 4A Division I playoffs and took an early 7-0 lead in the Class 5A final after a 51-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown

Trailing for the first time since the Week 1 loss to Fort Dorchester did not faze Dutch Fork. Instead, they opened the first quarter and put the ball in sophomore running back Ron Hoff’s hands.

Hoff led the Silver Foxes on two straight, time-consuming scoring drives. The first 10-plys, 74 yard and 3:43 minute drive ended with Hoff's 4-yard touchdown run.

On Dorman’s next possession, Alex Smith stripped the football from Thomas Morgan as he headed out of bounds on a long run. It was the second turnover of the game by the Cavaliers.

Hoff pounded the Dorman defense, picking up yards as he scored his second touchdown on a 2-yard run with 3:21 left in the half.

He finished with a gamehigh 188 rushing yards and out rushed Dorman by 40 yards in the first half alone.

In the second half, Dorman rallied behind backup quarterback Matthew Powell to tie the game. After

starter Ben Batson left momentarily with an injury, Powell completed a 43-yard pass to Jacob Pinckney to set up a 17-yard scoring pass to Zack Hillstock.

With 1:47 left in the third quarter, senior Bryce Thompson answered with a 27-yard touchdown to put the Silver Foxes back on top.

After Dorman tied the game again on a 5-yard jump pass by Hillstock to tight end John Gelotte, Thompson capped a 4-play, 70-yard drive with a 25-yard touchdown to make it 28-21.

The rest came down to the defense, starting with linebacker Kyle Ecton and defensive lineman Jamar Walker’s fourth down tackle of Gelotte with 3:51 left.

After Dutch Fork punted, Dorman scored on Batson’s 18-yard touchdown pass to Pinckley. They went for the 2-point conversion, only to see Gelotte stopped again a yard short of the goal line after safety Hugh Ryan's initial hit to force loose the football and Ecton and Christian Johnson's finishing tackle.

"I thought that they would have kicked it because we had trouble stopping them,” Knotts said. "I think it was a great call and a great offensive call.

We just sniffed it out and made the play at the end.

Although each guest might not get one of each cookie to take home, this makes the event more of a real party, as your guests won’t feel pressured to turn their kitchens into a bakery. Suggest that they wrap each dozen they are bringing separately.

• Avoid duplication of cookies/recipes by asking guests to RSVP and tell you about the cookies that they will bring. You might want to suggest selecting a recipe that has a special family meaning or one that is traditional to their background.

This is a great way to learn about the traditions and recipes of other cultures and ethnic groups.

• Ask each guest to bring a copy of their recipe to pass around with a little information about the origin or memory associated with the cookie. Having a list of the ingredients also ensures that

people with food allergies can protect their health.

• If the cookies or candies have been frozen, label them “Previously Frozen.”

• Set a beautiful table and arrange all the cookies as the guests arrive.

• Create separate sample cookie and exchange cookie areas -- either ends of a table or on separate small tables. Keep each recipe on its own plate.

• Design the table or areas in a layout that provides easy access to the treats from all sides.

This is a gathering where you can make your own rules and traditions, like baking these Easy Four-Ingredient Peanut Butter Cookies every year. Relax, and don’t forget to enjoy your own party!

Easy 4-ingredient peanut butter cookies • 1 cup sugar, plus 3 tablespoons for sprinkling • 1 cup peanut butter • 1 egg • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1. Heat oven to 350 F, and line a large cookie sheet with parchment paper.

2. In a large bowl, stir all four ingredients together until smooth.

3. Using a tablespoon measure, scoop out 2 tablespoons of cookie dough and roll into a smooth ball.

4. Place pre-rolled cookies on your cookie sheet about 1-inch apart. Press down with the back of a fork and then press again from the opposite direction to form a criss-cross pattern.

5. Bake for 10 minutes, turn cookie sheet and continue baking for another 5 to 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with the remaining sugar.

Cool cookies on sheet pan for 1-2 minutes before moving them to a wire rack to finish cooling. Makes 12-15 cookies.

5. Store in an air-tight container for up to 3 days.
