Safe mode If a scan shows nothing and your computer still acts funny, reboot it into safe mode. This is easy on a machine with Windows 7 or lower. You just hit F8 while the computer reboots and it will bring up a menu. Select ‘Safe Mode (without networking)’ and go.

FISHING REPORT LAKE MURRAY: Crappie: Slow. Some results reported by tightlining. Go shallower in the afternoon when the water warms up. Some can be found on deep brush around 20 feet. Use jigs or minnows very slow. Fish can be hard to find in deep water, so look at the mouths of creeks that split off from the main river in 12-15 feet. Striper: Fair. Check down the lake in the back of the big creeks. Some schooling reported up the river. Use freelining with live bait.

WARM UP WITH WILD RICE SOUP

Soup is an ideal meal on cold winter days.

One of the best things about soup is its versatility. Soup makes a great entre, and it also can serve as a warming appetizer or a delicious side dish. Soup also knows no bounds with regard to ingredients, making it a meal that can be enjoyed several times per week without boring the taste buds.

Those who need to warm up this winter may want to try the following recipe for Minnesota Wild Rice Soup courtesy of The Culinary Institute of America’s Book of Soups (Lebhar-Friedman).

MINNESOTA WILD RICE SOUP

Makes 8 servings 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 3 carrots, finely diced 2 leeks, white and light green parts, finely diced 2 celery stalks, finely diced 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 2 quarts Chicken Broth (see below) 3/4 cup wild rice 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste 3/4 cup heavy cream, hot 3 tablespoons dry sherry 1/4 cup minced chives 3 tablespoons chopped parsley

Heat the butter in a soup pot over medium heat. Add the carrots, leeks and celery. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

Reduce the heat to low, add the flour, and stir well.

Cook gently, about 3 minutes, stirring constantly.

Add the broth gradually, whisking well with each addition to eliminate flour lumps. Bring to a simmer.

Add the wild rice and salt. Continue to simmer until the rice is tender but still somewhat chewy, about 45 minutes.

Stir in the heated cream and sherry. Season with salt. Serve in heated bowls, garnished with chives and parsley.

CHICKEN BROTH

Makes about 2 quarts 4 pounds stewing hen or chicken parts or meaty bones, such as backs and necks 3 quarts cold water 1 large onion, diced 1 carrot, diced (about 1/3 cup) 1 celery stalk, diced (about 1/2 cup) 5 to 6 whole black peppercorns 3 to 4 parsley stems 1 bay leaf 1 sprig fresh thyme 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, or to taste

Place the chicken and water in a large pot (the water should cover the chicken by at least 2 inches; add more if necessary). Bring the water slowly to a boil over medium heat.

As the water comes to a boil, skim any foam that rises to the surface. Adjust the heat once a boil is reached so that a slow, lazy simmer is established. Cover partially, and simmer 2 hours, skimming as often as necessary.

Add the remaining ingredients. Continue to simmer, skimming the surface as necessary, until the broth is fully flavored, about 1 hour.

If using hen or chicken parts, remove them and cool slightly. Dice or shred the meat, and reserve to garnish the broth or save for another use. Discard the skin and

bones.

Strain the broth through a fine sieve or cheesecloth-lined colander into a large metal container. Discard the solids.

If you are using the broth right away, skim off any fat on the surface. If you are not using the broth right away, cool it quickly by transferring it to a metal container (if it’s not in one already) and placing the container in a sink filled with ice-cold water. Stir the broth as it cools, and then transfer it to storage containers. Store in the refrigerator, up to 5 days, or in the freezer, up to 3 months.

Label and date the containers clearly before putting them into the freezer.

Tarzan and the Elephants Q: What did Tarzan say when he saw the elephants coming over the hill?

A: “Look! The elephants are coming over the hill.”

Barometer Question This is a “TRUE” story.

The following concerns a question in a physics degree exam at the University of Copenhagen: “Describe how to determine the height of a skyscraper using a barometer.”

One student replied: “You tie a long piece of string to the neck of the barometer, then lower the barometer from the roof of the skyscraper to the ground. The length of the string plus the length of the barometer will equal the height of the building.”

This highly original answer so incensed the examiner that the student was failed. The student appealed on the grounds that his answer was indisputably correct, and the university appointed an independent arbiter to decide the case. The arbiter judged that the answer was indeed correct, but did not display any noticeable knowledge of physics. To resolve the problem it was decided to call the student in and allow him six minutes in which to provide a verbal answer which showed at least a minimal familiarity the basic principles of physics.

For five minutes the student sat in silence, forehead creased in thought.

The arbiter reminded him that time was running out, to which the student replied that he had several extremely relevant answers, but couldn’t make up his mind which to use.

On being advised to hurry up the student replied as follows: “Firstly, you could take the barometer up to the roof of the skyscraper, drop it over the edge, and measure the time it takes to reach the ground. The height of the building can then be worked out from the formula H = 0.5g x t squared. But bad luck on the barometer.”

“Or if the sun is shining you could measure the height of the barometer, then set it on end and measure the length of its shadow. Then you measure the length of the skyscraper’s shadow, and thereafter it is a simple matter of proportional arithmetic to work out the height of the skyscraper.”

“But if you wanted to be highly scientific about it, you could tie a short piece of string to the barometer and swing it like a pendulum, first at ground level and then on the roof of the

skyscraper. The height is worked out by the difference in the gravitational restoring force T = 2 pi sq root (l / g).”

“Or if the skyscraper has an outside emergency staircase, it would be easier to walk up it and mark off the height of the skyscraper in barometer lengths, then add them up.”

“If you merely wanted to be boring and orthodox about it, of course, you could use the barometer to measure the air pressure on the roof of the skyscraper and on the ground, and convert the difference in millibars into feet to give the height of the building.”

“But since we are constantly being exhorted to exercise independence of mind and apply scientific methods, undoubtedly the best way would be to knock on the janitor’s door and say to him, ’If you would like a nice new barometer, I will give you this one if you tell me the height of this skyscraper’.”

The student was Niels Bohr, the only person from Denmark to win the Nobel prize for Physics.

Multitude of Illnesses Our neighbor used the word hypochondriac to describe the phase her teenage daughter was going though.

One day the girl was convinced that the pain on her left side was appendicitis.

Her mother explained that the appendix is on the right.

“So that’s why it hurts so much,” her daughter said.

“My appendix is on the wrong side.”

Incriminating Answer “Why are you home from school so early?”

“I was the only one who could answer a question.”

“Oh, really? What was the question?”

“Who threw the eraser at the principal?”

Well, here’s the answer: It’s simple. Nobody bothered to check the oil and we didn’t know we were getting low.

Of course, the reason for that is geographical. All the oil is in Texas, Oklahoma, and Alaska, and all the dipsticks are in Washington, D.C.

How Many Government Workers Does It Take To Change a Light Bulb?

How many workers at Rocky Flats(the former nuclear weapon components plant in Golden, Colorado) should it take to change a light bulb?

Sixteen – and that’s no joke.

An internal memo written by a manager at the U.S. Department of Energy plant recommended a new safety procedure for “the replacement of a light bulb in a criticality beacon.” The beacon, similar to the revolving red lamp atop a police car, warns workers of nuclear accidents. The memo said the job should take at least 16 people over 60 hours to replace the light. It added that the same job used to take 12 workers 4.15 hours.

The memo called for a planner to meet with six others at a work-control meeting; talk with other workers who have done the job before; meet again; get signatures from five people at that work-control meeting; get the project plans approved by separate officials overseeing safety, logistics, waste management and plant scheduling; wait for a monthly criticalitybeacon test; direct electricians to replace the bulb; and then test and verify the repair.

They said since there was no health threat that he should call the sanitation department. The sanitation manager said he could not pick up the mule without authorization from the mayor.

The preacher paused for a brief moment and then replied: “Yes, Mayor, it is my job to bury the dead, but I always like to notify the next of kin first!”

Horseradish A minister who was very fond of pure, hot horseradish always kept a bottle of it on his dining room table.

He offered some to a guest, who took a big spoonful.

When the guest finally was able to speak, he gasped, “I’ve heard many ministers preach hellfire, but you are the first one I’ve met who passed out a sample of it.”

Corrupt Juror A dishonest lawyer bribed a man on his client’s jury to hold out for a charge of manslaughter, as opposed to the charge of murder which was brought by the state.

The jury was out for several days before they returned with the manslaughter verdict.

When he paid the corrupt juror, he asked him if he had a very difficult time convincing the other jurors to see things his way. “Sure did,” the juror replied, “the other eleven wanted to acquit.”

Couch Theater DVD PREVIEWS

PHOTO: Scene from “The Good Dinosaur” Photo Credit: Disney/Pixar --PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Good Dinosaur” (PG) -- In a timeline where dinosaurs avoided extinction and developed a little civilization, one young apatosaurus named Arlo (Raymond Ochoa) befriends a wild little mammal critter named Spot (a feral human child). The little dinosaur -- and his pet boy -- are taken from home by a violent storm, and learn to overcome fears against breathtaking animated backdrops of Western landscapes.

It has all of the visual splendor we’ve come to expect from PIXAR, but the storytelling seems mighty pedestrian compared to what the studio has done in the past. It’s a surprisingly bythe-numbers tale of a lost boy trying to find his way, but it also includes a fun bit where Sam Elliott (whose voice has more Western tones than a Monument Valley sunset) voices a grizzled T-Rex rancher.

“Spotlight” (R) -- This based-on-a-true-story film gives a riveting and relevant look into the world of investigative journalism, without the pomp and bombast of sanctifying the investigators.

The Boston Globe has a special section called Spotlight, reserved for longer-term, deep-dive stories. Robby Robinson (Michael Keaton) leads a team including Mark Ruffalo and Rachel

McAdams as they take on the live-wire topic of child abuse in the Catholic church, and the systems that keep it covered up.

It’s an important movie, especially for the way it depicts journalists not as Saints of the Truth, but as passionate people doing a hard job. Keaton and crew are humble and open to admitting mistakes. The story is made that much more powerful by keeping the heroes human.

“Secret in Their Eyes” (R) -- A group of counter-terrorist investigators are shaken to the core when they find the daughter of one of their own has been brutally murdered. Jess (Julia Roberts) carries the grief with her for 13 years after her daughter’s killer is let go. Her colleague and friend Ray (Chiwetel Ejiofor) continued working on the case all that time, and brings a new lead to Jess and district attorney Claire (Nicole Kidman), setting off a violent vendetta. There’s tense drama and a stellar cast, but it’s unfortunately bogged down in the trappings of an overlong police procedural.

DOG OF THE WEEK “Extraction” (R) -- A veteran CIA operative (Bruce Willis, looking like he’s still wondering why he got out of bed for this) has been kidnapped, and the only one who can save him is his son (Kellan Lutz, Generic Action Guy). There’s a technoMacGuffin that could kill the whole Internet, so Generic Action Guy has gotta grimace and punch and shoot as best as he can until he fixes it. In all of 80 minutes, just about every cliche is checked off (bar fight, girl sidekick with romantic past, nightclub fight, warehouse standoff) and every one is left untouched and intact, like a hobbyist’s collection.

Silver basket was woven in Czarist Russia

his artful and expressive silver basket was made in Russia in 1821. Wrought of Russian silver and crafted by hand weaving, this basket is a diminutive marvel of artistic and technical skill.

Comprised of thin, fully circular silver strands which were heated and woven into distinctive, squared design, this basket rivals more conventional natural fiber baskets in its ability to capture and define this genre of hand work.

Look closely and you will see a beautiful , tiny pattern of applied decoration to the surface of the borders. This work is achieved by a repetitive pattern of tiny dots which merge into a curvilinear shape.

RAVELIN’ T WITH THE CHRONICLE

. . . Off we go into the wild blue yonder MacLeod and Jerry Bellune are spending their children’s inheritance traveling the country and enjoying every minute. Here is an account of their travels from South Carolina to the Southwest and back, a 4,736-mile trip through 11 states.

Mound, La.

Have you ever thought about going off into the wild blue yonder?

Did you ever wonder where it might be?

Is it over, under or behind the rainbow?

Our dictionary says that if you go off into the wide blue yonder, you go somewhere far away that seems exciting because it is unknown territory to you.

That’s where we were heading for most of three weeks on backroads across the south and southwest.

Finding quite by accident the Southern Heritage Air Foundation Museum just across the Mississippi River in Louisiana was for us a delightful surprise.

We had stopped to chat with the ladies at the Louisiana Information Center on I-70, one of the few times we took interstates.

We had to take it as it was the shortest route across the Big Muddy.

The fighter planes

We had seen a model P51 fighter at the information center and the ladies confirmed that there were other real P51s at the Southern Heritage Air Foundation museum not far away. We just had to go.

The P51 Mustang helped ensure Allied air superiority over the European, North African,

MacLeod’s father, Col. Preston Hardy, had flown P51s with the 48th Fighter Wing from England over France and Germany during World War II. He had been one of the U.S. Army Air Corps pilots who flew fighter cover on the Berlin bombing raids.

Following their directions, we took the first exit heading west. It brought us to the Vicksburg-Tallulah Regional Airport.

The airport is about the size of the one in Pelion.

We parked and walked

He agreed to give us a tour and we walked down an apron on the runway to large sliding doors on a hanger larger than the terminal building.

Dexter told us the museum was a passion of its owner, building contractor

Dan Fordice of Vicksburg.

Dan’s father, former Louisiana Gov. Kirk Fordice, died in 2002.

His son spent years talking with World War II pilots about their experience.

Many of them rarely talked about it with their families or friends. They knew that, unless you had been there and similarly experienced the horrors of modern warfare, you could not relate to their stories.

Their families rarely saw their service records and memorabilia from the war, stored away in boxes.

When they died, their families threw their stuff away or sold it on eBay. Fordice asked these families that if they have anything from World War II, to donate, loan or sell it to him for the museum. He also found a lot of memorabilia on eBay, Dexter said.

His goal for the museum is to teach people, especially younger generations about World War II. When Dexter rolled back the hangar door wide enough for us to enter, we saw the P51 Mustangs and other light aircraft.

The third had been flown to an air show.

We stopped in front of a glassed-in display of pictures and model of a Navy F6F Hellcat fighter.

Dexter told us the story

of St. Clair Bienvenue of Waterproof, La. His fighter lost its engine in a crash while landing on a carrier deck in heavy seas.

Bienvenue said that hearing the voices of the people outside the plane, he knew he was okay.

A P51 bore the Greek letter pi near its tail.

The plane’s crew chief had two other planes he maintained that had the letter Y in that spot. Their pilots were shot down.

He decided to change the letter in hopes of changing their luck. It worked.
