Most of the lake has pretty good visibility.

A hero's story: Home is where the Army sends us C

ol. Thomas (Tom) Fincher Jr. is an award-winning hero and patriot with a 33-year Army career. The Chapin resident’s latest honor was receiving the Order of Saint Maurice, Primicerius Level, at a meeting of the Chapin American Legion Post 193.

Nominees must have served the infantry with distinction, demonstrated a significant contribution and represent the highest standards of integrity, moral character, professional competence and dedication to duty.

It is named after Saint Maurice, Primicerius of the Roman Theban Legion in the 3rd century. Maurice is the patron saint of the U.S. Army Infantry.

In his military service, he earned 28 decorations including the Combat Infantry Badge, Air Assault Badge, Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star for Valor with Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart, Air Medal, and Vietnamese Gallantry Cross with Silver Star. In this interview with the Chronicle's Kay Gordon, he talks about his career and life.

I remember the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor.

My father and some other men volunteered to guard the Lake Murray Dam until relieved by the National Guard.

I went to Dutch Fork Grammar School in Ballentine and we attended Bethel Lutheran Church in White Rock.

It was an exciting time.

Troops from Ft. Jackson were often on Highway 76 on maneuvers. B-25 bombers were always in the air. I watched them bomb “Bomb Island” night and day.

In 1943 or 1944 a B-25 came over our school very low and turned over. It then spiraled down and exploded behind some trees near the school. There were no survivors. I can still see that bomber spiraling down.

Our teachers hurried us back in the classroom. My teacher did something that is not allowed in school today — she prayed for the bomber crew and their families.

In 1946 our family moved to Columbia. I graduated from Dreher High in 1954 and took three courses at USC during the summer.

We’ve been married 63 years. My mentors include many great Army officers and NCOs who helped me.

When we reached the hotel, we went to the dining room. It had been a long day and we were starved.

Israeli food was surprisingly good. Years under British occupation had not dimmed their palates.

The growing season had not yet begun back in the U.S., but here in the desert’s greenhouses using computer controlled irrigation, the Israelis grew amazing crops.

Breakfast at the hotel had always been a buffet with fresh fruits and vegetables. If you wanted eggs or waffles, they made them for you.

Most of us had more than we needed without adding anything else.

The Israeli cuisine reflected the national diversity of a people of one faith.

The food their mothers and grandmothers had taught them to prepare in countries from Russia to South America stood on the enormous buffet tables. Help yourself — and we did.

The lone rock that came through a window was where my new friends, Diane Lampert and Fred Stuart were seated.

After their marriage Diane had retained her family name. It was part of her brand as a song writer to Hollywood movies and Broadway musicals.

Concerned that they may have been hurt, I looked for signs of bleeding.

Both said they were fine.

“I knew something like this could happen,” Diane said. “It had to come through our window. If it went through another window, someone would have been badly injured.”

That puzzled me.

“What do you mean you knew it could happen?”

Ruth had battled cancer for years. When the U.S. doctors reluctantly admitted they could do no more for her, she and her

husband tried anti-cancer treatments in Mexico and Europe.

These were expensive and possibly risky. They had not been approved by the Washington health bureaucrats.

Facing the Grim Reaper at an early age was a powerful motivator to run risks.

Even these treatments did not stop the malignant advance of the disease.

Her husband traveled to Israel with his wife’s ashes in a small plastic bag in his luggage. Israeli airport security is thorough but their screening did not detect his hidden cargo.

He hired a driver to take him to the mount one afternoon and found a tree behind a low stone wall that he thought Ruth would have liked for her final resting place. That evening, he and the driver returned after dark and spread her ashes around the tree.

Diane produced from her purse a small photograph. It showed a lonely tree behind a low stone wall.

The Temple Mount could be seen behind it outlined against a steel blue sky.

F

ebruary is National Dental Health Month for pets.

Just as healthy teeth and gums are important for us, they are also very important for our pets and their health.

Dental disease is not always easy to identify in our pets because they are very good at hiding dental pain.

This instinct comes from their wild ancestors who needed to hide signs of illness and weakness to avoid being attacked.

Many of our pets’ dental problems develop slowly and are common in middle age and older pets.

You may feel your dog or cat is getting “out of sorts” when actually their mouth hurts.

Once your pet has a painful mouth, your veterinarian will need to clean and examine the teeth to address the problem.

This will likely involve anesthesia, dental x-rays, possible extractions, or even a referral to a veterinary dentist.

Ideally, we would like to avoid these issues.

What I will be discussing today is preventative dental care. The saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is definitely true in veterinary dentistry.

Start brushing their teeth as soon as possible—8 to 12 weeks of age is best.

If you brush every day your pet should become familiar with the routine

when their permanent teeth erupt.

You may need to stop brushing while your pet is losing its baby teeth.

This typically happens between 4 and 6 months of age. Their mouth will be a bit sore and handling may cause more pain. Continue brushing once all the permanent teeth come in.

Brushing your pet’s teeth is the single most effective way to maintain oral health between veterinary dental checkups.

Ideally you do want to brush every day or at least 4 times a week.

The reason for this is the plaque or bacterial film that forms on the teeth after eating begins to transition to tarter or calculus within about 48 hours.

By routinely brushing your pets’ teeth you disrupt the plaque formation.

Work with your pet’s mouth. Try and be patient and make it fun. Use love and praise, and try to practice at the same time each day to establish a routine.

Choose a quiet time, such as late in the evening when your pet may be a little more cooperative.

If your pet is highly motivated by food, try just before dinner so your pet will be rewarded for cooperation.

You can start by handling the muzzle and touching your pet’s lips.

Gradually work up to rubbing the teeth and gums with your finger.

You can put a few drops of water flavored with low-sodium chicken or beef bouillon for dogs and tuna juice for cats in their mouth, and they will hopefully begin to look forward to these sessions.

You can use a bouillon- or tuna-flavored washcloth or a piece of gauze wrapped

around the end of your finger to gently rub the teeth.

Finally, use a finger brush or a soft veterinary or human toothbrush to brush the teeth using the bouillon water or tuna juice.

For cats and small dogs, a Q-tip can prove to be very useful and easier to manage than a toothbrush.

If using a brush, try and hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to the tooth and brush gently back and forth or in a circular pattern from gum to tip.

Brushing the tongue side of the teeth is less critical, but still good if your pet will allow this.

Most of the tarter develops on the outside part of the teeth that faces the lips.

Do offer rewards and treats when your pet allows you to brush to keep it a good experience.

You can use several other dental tools to help maintain dental health.

veterinary toothpastes, water additives, and gels to use for your pet.

Ask your veterinarian which product may be best for you and your pet.

These products all enhance your home care program, but daily brushing is best.

You do not want to use people toothpaste because the fluoride and detergents in the toothpaste can be harmful if swallowed.

Our pets don’t rinse and spit as we do.

Hydrogen peroxide can be harsh on the gums and shouldn’t be swallowed either as it can cause nausea.

Baking soda should not be used especially in older pets due to its sodium content.

Pick kibble and rubber chew toys that will help keep the teeth clean.

Avoid natural bones and hard nylon products which can potentially fracture your pet’s teeth.

If your pet doesn’t like chew toys you can smear peanut butter or soft cheese on the toy to get them to chew.

The chew toy only works if they chew on it routinely.

Ideally you should monitor your pet when chewing on a treat or toy to make sure they don’t swallow any large

pieces. Your veterinarian can recommend diets designed to aid in the control of plaque and tarter.

The other benefit to routine dental care is that your dog or cat’s breath should smell a little better.

When I can walk in an exam room and smell the patient’s breath before I get close, I know we have dental issues.

If your pet has really bad breath, talk to your veterinarian and have their teeth examined.

It will go a long way to making your cuddle time with your pet a much better experience.

Internal Grant Award: Smoking Cessation

he Foundation provides funding for the Smoking Cessation program at Lexington Medical Center, so it can be offered to any person in our community who would like to attend.

This is the only smoking cessation program in the area that is offered free of charge.

In the past year, this 8-week program has expanded service to one

clinic at LMC Irmo, two clinics at the LMC Main campus, and three clinics at LMC Lexington.

The program is looking to further expand to the Batesburg-Leesville area.

Already, 144 participants have completed the program, with a success rate greater than 50%, which is almost 3 times the national average of similar smoking cessation programs.

So you can get that big wide “Julia Roberts” smile, but some better breathing too!

And finally, the dentist can construct some sort of breathing aid, usually called a Mandibular Advancement Apparatus.

These appliances hold the lower jaw forward and open, to enhance the size of the airway.

Patients who struggle with CPAP compliance can be great candidates for this type of therapy.

Unfortunately, people with jaw joint problems may not be able to wear the MAA appliance.

More and more, researchers and physicians are finding out the importance of proper childhood development. Followthrough in later life with proper nasal breathing can enhance and lengthen your life!

You’ve probably heard this advice often: Don’t go shopping when you’re hungry.

I’d like to share some healthy shopping advice with you that benefited me.

According to Janell Yule in “The 21-Day Detox Challenge,” just because you are shopping at a local grocery does not mean every item is a good choice.

• When you are shopping for produce, check the numbers on stickers.

If it starts with a 3 or 4 it’s been grown conventionally.

If it starts with an 8 it’s genetically modified. If it starts with a 9 it’s organic.

If you can buy organic, that is ideal.
