How to fix your computer headaches - Part 2 Hidden demons Many malware programs will hide themselves in the operating files of Windows. A safe mode run will strip Windows down to the essentials so that all 359-7633 folders get a complete scan.

Anything found _ with an anti-malware program scan can be deleted or quarantined. You may have to scan a couple times and reboot each time to make sure that all traces of the program are completely removed.

If you do several scans and you notice that it finds the same malware over and over, please stop at this point and call a professional. The malware has installed itself on the bootdrive of the computer so that each time it restarts it will reinstall itself. This is a much harder fix.

If the scans still find nothing, even in safe mode, reboot the computer.

It will automatically revert to a regular Windows full reboot. Now you will need to restore the computer to a previous day. This should leave all files just as they are but it will uninstall any updates or programs that have been installed since then.

This may be the only way to get your computer to work right.

FISHING REPORT LAKE MURRAY: Crappie: Slow. Some results reported by tightlining. Go shallower in the afternoon when the water warms up. Some can be found on deep brush around 20 feet. Use jigs or minnows very slow. Fish can be hard to find in deep water, so look at the mouths of creeks that split off from the main river in 12-15 feet. Striper: Fair. Check down the lake in the back of the big creeks. Some schooling reported up the river. Use freelining with live bait.

iping away the grime of winter doesn’t have to mean launching an attack with dangerous chemicals. As you tackle this year’s spring cleaning chores, take a note from Mother Nature and rely on the cleaning power of a surprisingly effective natural product: vinegar.

During the last century, vinegar has become increasingly recognized as a low cost and ecofriendly household product. From cooking and can­ning, to cleaning items indoors and out, homeowners are discovering that this eco-friendly, acetic liquid is as versatile as it is useful.

“Cleaning with vinegar has always been an effective way to banish dirt and grime in kitchens, bathrooms, the garage and the outdoors,” said Mike Smith, executive vice president of sales and market­ing at Mizkan Americas, the makers of Four Monks Cleaning Vinegar.

In the Kitchen

Clean off the blades of a well-worn can opener with an old toothbrush soaked with vinegar to help remove dirt and grease.

Clean your ice/water dispenser by running vin­egar through the system. Flush the vinegar out by running water through the system for 30-60 seconds.

Rid your dishwasher of mineral buildup by pouring half a cup of vinegar into the reservoir and running an empty cycle. You can also use vinegar in the dishwasher instead of another glass cleaner to keep your glassware sparkling.

Renew sponges and dishrags by placing them in just enough water to cover them. Then add one-fourth cup of vinegar and let them soak overnight.

Remove dark stains on an aluminum pot by boil­ing two cups of vinegar. For stained and smelly plastic food containers and lunchboxes, wipe them with a cloth dampened with vinegar.

To clean a grease-splattered oven door window, saturate it with vinegar. Keep the door open for 10-15 minutes before wiping with a sponge.

Deodorize the garbage disposal by pouring in half a cup of baking soda and half a cup of vin­ egar. Let sit for five minutes then run hot water down the disposal.

Avoid using toxic chemicals where you store food; wipe up spills in the fridge with vinegar.

In the Bathroom

Rid a faucet of lime deposits by tying a plastic bag containing one-third to one-half cup of vinegar around it and leaving it there for two or three hours. Wipe down with a sponge and scrub any remaining deposits with an old toothbrush. The same approach can be used to remove buildup on a showerhead.

The fizzing combo of vinegar and baking soda can unclog and remove odor from a tub drain. Pour half a cup of baking soda in the drain, then follow with two cups of hot vinegar.

What Is Vinegar?

Vinegar is the acetic liquid that results when a product containing sugar is allowed to ferment. Vinegar can be created from nearly any product containing sugar; fruit and grains, such as barley and corn, are common sources of vinegar.

The ingredients in vinegar depend on the type of vinegar produced. For exam­ ple, Four Monks uses distilled vinegar proc­essed from corn, so it’s safe for your family. All vinegars are diluted with water to the preferred acidity before bottling.

Four Monks has 6 percent acidity, which is 20 percent stronger than tradi­tional vinegar, but gentle on everyday surfaces. This acetic quality is what enables vinegar to effectively clean while being safe for the body and the

Restore yellowed clothing by soaking garments overnight in a solution of 12 parts warm water and one part vinegar. Wash them the following morning.

Soak new garments in a few cups of vinegar for 10-15 minutes before washing to stop dyes from running in the wash.

If frequent ironing has left your iron plate dirty, make a paste from one part vinegar and one part salt to scrub it clean.

Remove scorch marks from an iron by rubbing it with a warm solution of equal parts vinegar and salt. If that doesn’t work, use a cloth dampened with vinegar.

Forgot that you left wet laundry in the machine and it now smells moldy? Pour a few cups of vin­egar in the machine and wash the clothes in hot water. Then run a normal cycle with detergent to rinse the clothes.

Prevent lint from clinging to clothes by adding half a cup of vinegar to the wash cycle.

Lonely Superbowl Seat A young man was very excited because he just won a ticket to the Super Bowl. His excitement lessened as he realized his seat was in the back of the stadium.

As he searched the rows ahead of him for a better seat, he found an empty one right next to the field.

He approached the man sitting next to the empty seat and asked if it was taken.

The man replied, “No.” Amazed the young man asked, “How could someone pass up a seat like this?”

The older gentleman responded, “That’s my wife’s seat. We’ve been to every Super Bowl together since the day we were married but she has passed away.”

Put on the headphones from your mp3 player, but don’t plug them in. Hang a paper cup around your neck with string. Go stand in front of your stove. Say, to no one in particular, “Stove manned and ready” Stand there for three or four hours. And say, again to no one in particular, “stove secured.” Roll up your headphones and paper cup and place them in a box.

Couch Theater DVD PREVIEWS

--PICKS OF THE WEEK “Creed” (PG-13) -- Years after losing its punch, the Rocky franchise returns to the ring with a strong new lead and a lot more power. Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan) never knew his father, Apollo Creed, because he was killed in a boxing match -- if you remember your “Rocky IV.” Raised by Apollo’s widow, “Donny” has grown up well-off and welleducated, but he can’t resist the urge to enter the ring. Donny seeks out his father’s old friend -- and one-time adversary -- Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) to be his trainer.

Unlike previous entries, and the hallowed original, this Rocky was not written or directed by Stallone. Directing this time is young up-andcomer Ryan Coogler, who won acclaim the last time he worked with Jordan, on “Fruitvale Station.” The film reaches the heights of the original, while staying fresh, relevant and its own picture.

“Legend” (R) -- London has a long history of well-dressed and stylish psychos working its criminal class, and the Kray brothers always get a good bit of attention. Identical twins Ronnie and Reggie (both played, stupendously, by Tom Hardy) were sort of celebrity gangsters in the 1960s. Here, Ronnie is the cool, smooth criminal, while Reggie is rather a volatile chap, with unorthodox predilections and a short fuse.

With Hardy’s performance(s) as the unmitigated highlight, the rest of flick seems lacking. The rise and fall of the dual mobsters happens at an unsatisfying pace. There are some subplots that don’t seem to support a central thrust. Everything works with Hardy, however, even when he’s sitting right beside himself playing two men who have only physical similarities.

“The Night Before” (R) -- Three friends in their thirties carry out their sacred holiday tradition of getting obliterated with various substances

and getting into shenanigans. Seth Rogen plays Isaac, a soon-to-befather whose loving wife sends him off with a care package of drugs so he can have his last hurrah with his pals Ethan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Chris (Anthony Mackie). They start out looking for some elusive party, but things just roll down the typical stoner-hijinks track with wild misunderstandings. The cast includes some very strong supporting players (Michael Shannon, Ilana Glazer).

“The Danish Girl” (R) -- Einar Wegener was already married and wellknown when he transitioned from being a man to a woman in 1920s Copenhagen. Einar (Eddie Redmayne), a praised painter of landscapes, goes on a bold and beguiling journey with his wife, Gerda (Alicia Vikan-

In small bowl, combine sugar, soy sauce and pepper flakes, cover and set aside.

Coat 5-quart slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray. In slow cooker, combine potatoes and onion. Pour pineapple and its juice over top. Place pork loin filet on top and sprinkle with black pepper. Cover and cook on high for 4 hours (low: 8 hours).

Remove pork and place on cutting board for 10 minutes.

In slow cooker, add butter to potato mixture. Using potato masher or fork, mash until well blended.

Slice or coarsely shred pork.

Spoon potatoes onto serving platter then top with shredded pork. Stir soy sauce mixture and spoon over pork and potatoes.

PEPPERY COUNTRY PORK STEW

cook on high for 4 hours (low: 8 hours).

Combine cornstarch and remaining water until dissolved; stir into pork mixture with peas. Cover and cook on high for 15 minutes to thicken slightly. Add salt, to taste.

Serve pork stew in shallow bowls over egg noodles.

Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 8 hours and 15 minutes Servings: 4 1 tablespoon olive oil, divided 2 Smithfield Peppercorn & Garlic Marinated Fresh Pork Tenderloins, cut into 1 1/2inch cubes 1 1/2 p ounds carrots, cut into 1 1/2-inch slices 2 medium yellow onions, quartered 2 medium red bell peppers, cut into 1-inch pieces 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons water, divided 2 teaspoons beef bouillon granules 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves 2 tablespoons cornstarch 1 cup frozen green peas, thawed salt, to taste 8 ounces dry egg noodles, cooked according to package instructions

In large skillet, heat 1/2 tablespoon oil over medium-high heat. Working in two batches, brown pork, about 4 minutes each batch, turning occasionally.

Add remaining 1/2 tablespoon oil for second batch.

Meanwhile in 5-quart slow cooker, combine carrots, onions, peppers, 1/2 cup water, bouillon granules and thyme. Top with browned pork, cover and

Silver cannisters made for cleanly storage

T

his silver over copper canister reflects the copper under the silver as well as the silver on its surface.

This piece was crafted in the true method of silvering copper made possible in the 1800 period in Sheffield, England. Layering sheets of silver over hot copper made less than solid pieces appear silver. Copper, being on the periodic table of metal next to silver, made it the perfect choice for using as the base metal.

Pieces such as this tea caddy are more collectible and rare than modern day sterling. Crafted over 200 years ago pieces such as this showcase the skill o,f the 18th century silversmith.

This piece was used to store precious tea leaves, which would easily mold in an environment other than one both airtight and clean.

The lid of this piece fits as perfectly as when first crafted. There is a “pop” when the lid is removed. It achieves this precision without the use of threading and the “pop” lets you know that the tea inside is still safe to consume.

Tea bags were not common until near 1915, so vessels like this were necessary and used daily. Their function today is still

as relevant as when they were first crafted.

They continue to be useful in a modern world.

The Cats Kick Cancer campaign has helped to generate more than $50,500 in donations and pledges to charities, according to head coach Will Gettys. Those funds have helped send cancer patients ages 5-18 and their parents to a one-week camp at River Oak Retreat Center at Honea Path.

The centerpiece of the campaign is the annual 3-day soccer tournament at Lexington High School. Starting Friday, the Wildcats will compete with seven teams for the championship and use their feet to raise funds.

Lexington will donate $1 from each ticket sold and locally-owned Larry’s Giant Subs and Knead Pizza has pledged $5 per goal scored in the tournament up to 50 goals.

“I’d love to sell 1,000 tickets during the weekend and see at least 50 balls go into the back of the net for another $500,” Gettys said. “It costs $500 to send one child to Camp KEMO. Our goal for the weekend will be to send three more kids to a great summer camp.”

Along with improving on last year’s 8-16 mark, the Wildcats also want to exceed last year’s totals raised during the tournament ($1,000) and through the regular season ($4,805).

“We definitely need to be more dangerous this year,” Gettys said.

“We really struggled to score last year, so hopefully we can create and finish a lot more chances this season.”

Among the top returning players are All-Region senior midfielder Conley Waters, junior midfielder and leading scorer Sam Plumer, sophomore AllRegion goalkeeper and forward Cameron Smith was All-Region, junior defender Charles Shealy, junior forward Kolin Fringer, senior forward Bryce Holdman, junior midfielder Bradley Anderson, junior defender Connor Johnson, sophomore defender Alex Karp and senior goalkeeper Andrew Ehrlich.

Beardless in Duck Dynastyland

MacLeod and Jerry Bellune are spending their children’s inheritance traveling the country and enjoying every minute. Here is an account of their travels from South Carolina to the Southwest and back, a 4,736-mile trip through 11 states.

West Monroe, La.

Almost 90 years ago, New York Gov. Al Smith ran for President of the United States.

His critics charged that the governor was too parochial to represent the interests of the entire country.

Reporters asked him about the concerns of voters in states west of the Mississippi River.

To that, the governor quipped, “What states are west of the Mississippi?”

Perhaps the governor was just having a bit of fun with the reporters. Could he have been that stupid?

We’re not exactly dunces.

We know there are states west of the Mississippi.

The real America

We know they’re there because we have seen them from our airline window at 35,000 feet on our way west to California.

They have names like Arizona, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

We just had to go find them by car on our country’s blue highways.

Those are the secondary roads where you find the real America — small towns, plain-spoken people and Mom’s Cafe where the tea is always ice cold and the barbecue and fried chicken always piping hot.

These are the real Americans, the backbone of the most exceptional nation on the face of the earth.

presidential candidates and their handlers are courting in hopes of gaining enough votes to win a seat in the Oval Office and retire inside the Beltway, not to be heard from again except on the telly and the newspapers until re-election time rolls around in four years.

Tiger troubles

We thanked Dexter Perryman for his guided tour of the aviation museum just across the Mississippi River in Mound, La. Without a staff of historians and other experts, Dan Fordice and his volunteers have built a remarkable small museum at the Vicksburg-Tullulah Airport.

We headed south toward

Monroe, La., Why should you know that name? Because it’s the home of the Robertsons, the Duck Dynasty boys who like hunting and fishing and cracking jokes and making scads of money off their TV show and the products it has spawned.

We wanted to find a place to stay and check in early because the Carolina Gamecocks were playing football with LSU’s Tigers down in Baton Rouge and it would be on TV. Despite the Vegas gamblers, we were hoping the Gamecocks would surprise the Tigers on their home turf and upset them.

I’d like to tell you the game went according to plan and the Gamecocks came home a winner.

But I suspect you probably watched the same game on TV in South Carolina that we watched in Louisiana. The score wasn’t anything to write home about.

LSU 45 Carolina 24 Coach Steve Spurrier wasn’t saying anything but resigning had to be weighing heavily on his mind.

Duck stuff

The next morning was a bright and beautiful Sunday and we figured the Duck Dynasty boys had other things — spiritual

perhaps — on their minds.

Surely none of the bearded ones shaved. And you’d hate to see their pretty ladies hide behind a beard.

I haven’t had a beard since they were the rage back in the 1970s. Going into Ducky Dynasty country without a beard might be downright dangerous.

Miss Kay’s Biscuits

You’ll need 2 cups biscuit mix, a cup of sour cream, ½ cup Sprite or 7Up and ½ stick butter Heat oven to 350º and mix sour cream and Sprite or 7Up with biscuit mix.

Sprinkle a little biscuit mix on a pastry sheet or wax paper and add dough.

Press down dough and cut with a biscuit cutter.

Melt butter in an iron skillet and dip cut biscuits in it. Then place biscuits on a baking sheet and bake 20 minutes till golden brown.

Peanut Butter Cookies

You’ll need an egg, a cup of sugar and a cup of peanut butter. Come to think of it, you’d probably better triple that or you might not get one after your family descends on the kitchen.

Heat oven to 350º and mix all ingredients in a bowl. Spoon on to a cookie sheet about 2” apart. Bake for 8 minutes. They won’t look done but they are.

Let them cool a bit and they’ll be perfect.
