Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are at 353.88 (full pool is 360.00), and water temperatures range from 49 at the dam to the mid-40s around Buffalo Creek to the low 40s in the river.

Most of the lake has pretty good visibility.

There have been some pretty good bags of bass weighed in recent tournaments, but veteran tournament angler Captain Doug Lown reports that with very low temperatures fish will be caught in some particular patterns.

Jerkbaits and Alabama rigs are good options with water temperatures in the 40s, and you can also catch some fish on the bottom with a shakey head.

The end of Morningside Drive, at Leaphart Road, has also been closed for construction.

When the project is completed, the bridge will have a middle left-turn lane added to it.

There will also be leftturn lanes added to Chris Drive, north and south of Leaphart, and to Harbor Drive. Orchard Drive, which was closed, has been raised, and it will have a left-turn lane, too.

SCDOT crews expedited the work to open the Leaphart Road bridge after it had to be closed in March because it was hit by a tractor-trailer one too many times.

Two educators from Lexington-Richland School District Five have been announced as winners of South Carolina Council for Exceptional Children (SCCEC) annual awards.

Calvin Golson, a paraprofessional at the Academy for Success, has been named the SCCEC Para Educator of the Year. Nursery Road Elementary special education teacher Leigh Burnette was announced as the SCCEC Rookie Teacher of the Year.

“It has been such a unique pleasure to serve in District Five for the past 16 years,” Golson said. “I cannot thank the SCCEC enough for recognizing me with this award. The real winner are the students and school I serve each and every day.”

Make no mistake; chocolate rules on Valentine’s Day

Valentine's Day and chocolate are the perfect pair (although I don't need a special holiday to celebrate the joys of eating chocolate).

Women make 75% of all chocolate purchases throughout the year, but in the days before and on Valentine's Day, 75% of chocolate purchases are made by men for the women in their lives.

They must love us a lot, because more than a billion dollars is spent each year on chocolate for Valentine's Day. Recent health research supports the benefits of eating dark chocolate in moderation, including helping to lower high blood pressure.

Plant phenols — and in the case of dark chocolate, cocoa phenols — are compounds known to lower blood pressure.

Chocolates made in Europe are generally richer in cocoa phenols than those made in the U.S. Dark chocolate also contains beneficial antioxidants, which rid the body of free radicals.

Free radicals are destructive molecules that are implicated in heart disease and other ailments.

The antioxidants in about 1 ½ ounces of dark chocolate exceed those found in walnuts, grapes and cranberries.

This recipe for Chocolate Lover's Chocolate Cake should be made with high-quality, premium dark cocoa powder for the best results.

Think of it as a delicious way to improve your health while celebrating love on Valentine's Day.

Chocolate Lover’s Chocolate Cake • 2 cups sugar • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour • ¾ cup premium dark chocolate cocoa powder • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda • 1 teaspoon salt • 2 eggs • 1 cup milk • ½ cup vegetable oil • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 1 cup boiling water • Chocolate frosting (recipe follows)

1. Heat oven to 350 F. Grease and flour two (9-inch) round baking pans (or see variations below).

2. Using a large bowl, stir together the sugar, flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add the eggs, milk, oil and vanilla. Beat mixture on medium speed for 2 minutes; DO NOT OVERBEAT. Stir in boiling water.

The batter will be thin. Pour the batter into the prepared pans.

3. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes. Remove from pans to wire racks. Cool completely.

Frost with the Chocolate Lovers Chocolate Frosting recipe below.

Makes 10 to 12 servings.

Variations: One-pan cake Grease and flour 13-by-9-by-

2-inch baking pan. Heat oven to 350 F. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake 35 to 40 minutes. Cool completely. Frost with the chocolate frosting recipe below.

Three-layer cake Grease and flour three 8-inch round baking pans. Heat oven to 350 F. Pour batter into prepared pans. Bake 30 to 35 minutes. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans to wire racks. Cool completely. Frost with the chocolate frosting recipe below.

Bundt cake Grease and flour 12-cup Bundt pan. Heat oven to 350 F. Pour batter into prepared pan.

Bake 50 to 55 minutes. Cool 15 minutes; remove from pan to wire rack. Cool completely.

Frost with the chocolate frosting recipe below.

Cupcakes Line muffin cups (2-½ inches in diameter) with paper bake cups. Heat oven to 350 F. Fill cups 2/3 full with batter. Bake 22 to 25 minutes. Cool completely. Frost with chocolate frosting recipe below. Makes about 30 cupcakes.

Chocolate Lover’s frosting • ½ cup (1 stick) butter or margarine • 2/3 cup premium dark chocolate baking cocoa • 3 cups powdered sugar • 1/3 cup milk • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Using a small, microwave-safe bowl, melt butter in the microwave, about 30 to 40 seconds or until melted. Stir in cocoa. Alternately add powdered sugar and milk, beating until the mix-

ture is smooth. Add a small amount of additional milk, if needed, to make the frosting easier to spread. Stir in vanilla extract. Makes about 2 cups frosting.

Befriended by a songwriter for the stars Between now and Easter, Chronicle Editor Emeritus Jerry Bellune will share with you his adventures in the Holy Land. The experience gave him a greater appreciation of Christian and Jewish history and shared values.

Jerusalem, Israel

Diane Lampert befriended me in the Sinai Desert.

We were there with other journalists to observe the evacuation of Israeli settlers. It was a condition of the peace agreement U.S. President Jimmy Carter orchestrated between the Egyptian and Israeli governments.

Diane was one of these sweet people who adopt stray cats and journalists.

I didn’t realize it then but later learned what an amazing career she had.

She wrote lyrics to a long list of pop and rockabilly hits and the title songs for more than 20 movies starring Bob Hope, Cary Grant, Buster Keaton and others.

Her songs were performed

by Brenda Lee, Harry Nilsson, George Jones, the Seekers and the Lettermen.

Her movie credits included film title songs for “The Snow Queen,” “I’ll Take Sweden, “Billie,” and “Silent Running” plus songs for “The Wild and the Innocent” and “Trees Lounge.”

She immediately asked me for my birth date and looked at me as if that said a lot about my character.

She wrote my name and the date in her notebook.

I was puzzled and asked her what it meant?

She looked into my eyes and said, “I’ll tell you when we know each other better.”

Did you see that?

Her husband Fred Stuart was in the movie business, too. He did something you may not be aware of: He placed products in movies.

It was a subtle way to brand products from autos to beer to almost any product whose makers and distributors wanted to build consumer recognition.

If you watched a movie star smoking a particular brand of cigarette, driving a specific model car or imbibing a particular kind of booze, the company paid Fred and the producers big bucks to make their product visible on the screen.

Fred later told we he read scripts almost daily to find opportunities to place products in their productions.

If you loved reading and movies, it was a good way to make a living.

He and Diane, I found on later visits to them in New York, owned an expensive and expansive apartment in a building with a doorman and security guards on Park avenue in Manhattan. That kind of lifestyle isn’t cheap.

Being a West Pointer, he was quickly made a colonel in the Union army … and then kept rising higher and higher with more and more general’s stars.

Now, here’s the thing about Ambrose Burnside: he naturally, and without effort, presented

the aura of a guy who had it all together. When people met him for the first time, they came away thinking, “Wow!” It’s not that he tried to deceive or pull the wool over anybody’s eyes; quiet, personally decent and almost soft spoken, he nonetheless gave off a successful vibe that left people in awe.

But an officer who served under him said, “You had to be around him for a while to realize he just wasn’t that smart.”

He proved that with the blood of his soldiers in September, 1862 at the Battle of Antietam, when he ordered repeated attacks across a beautiful stone bridge.

Some 450 Georgians on the hilltop opposite it held off 14,000 Union troops for hours during charge after charge, killing a lot of good men.

Only later did someone discover you could easily wade across the creek a short way downstream, avoiding the Rebel stronghold.

Then, on the heels of that disaster, President Lincoln made Burnside commander of the entire Army of the Potomac!

I can’t find the exact quote, but historian Bruce Catton wrote something very close to, “It was to Burnside’s eternal credit that he told Lincoln he wasn’t up to the job, and to Lincoln’s eternal discredit that he didn’t listen to him.”

Because less than 90 days after the bloodbath at Burnside’s Bridge in Maryland, he hurled the entire Union army uphill at entrenched Confederates waiting for them in the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia.

The result: 12,653 men were

mowed down in a few hours.

Burnside was then bounced from one second-tier wartime command to another for the remainder of the war.

He was in Washington when Lee surrendered, and decided to celebrate the end of the conflict by going to see a play. Yup, you guessed it: he was sitting directly below Lincoln’s box in Ford’s Theatre when John Wilkes Booth crept up from behind.

In fact, the president was looking down at the time, and Burnside was among the last faces Lincoln ever saw.

Here’s what really boggles the mind: after this unbroken string of failure, Burnside returned to Rhode Island with his popularity intact.

He was elected Governor, helped found the National Rifle Association (NRA), served as national commander of the GAR (a Union veterans organization, like the VFW or American Legion), and capped it off by winning election to the Senate.

He died of a heart attack in 1881 at age 57.

Even in death, Burnside was unlucky one last time. All his life, he was famous for the fantastic, distinctive hair worn on both sides of his face, extending down to his shaven chin.

At the time, people called the style “burnsides.” But poor Burnside was denied his claim to fame.

Somehow, his name was inverted: you and I know them as “sideburns.”

“If it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all.” In Ambrose Burnside’s case, truer words were never sung.

In West Columbia, two focal points for health maintenance include Lexington Medical Center’s Health Directions and Riverwalk, where walkers and runners gather outside to get active.

Tanailyn Pernell is the health promotion consultant at Health Directions in West Columbia. She said the fitness center is hopping in the first of the year.

“It’s always the case that we see an increase in activity and traffic flow in January and February,” said Pernell.

She said there are more new members, and more of the existing members start back with their fitness training. The spike in numbers, said Pernell is close to 20%.

Health directions offers boot camps in addition to programs like “Exercise is Medicine.” Pernell also said one of the goals of LMC is to teach high-risk participants proper exercise routines so they can implement training at home. An LMC Foundation program funds that effort.

While the comfort of the indoor fitness center is attractive, activity on West Columbia’s popular Riverwalk increased as temperatures rose into the 60s or higher.

Genevieve Johnson recently moved to Columbia from Northern Iowa to take a new job. Since discovering the West Columbia Riverwalk she has become a regular.

“I come here every day,” said Johnson.

And she brings her dogs, Hunter and Precious. “This is nice,” she said. Johnson also said she found out about Riverwalk via the

Christian Hall, 16, of Gaston will represent the National Guard in the 2018 Military Child of the Year® (MCOY) Award competition. 2018 marks the 10th anniversary of this event.

Johnson, who lived close to a lake in Iowa, said she also enjoys the warmer weather in West Columbia, compared to the winters where she lived before.

Guy Prince is a pastor who lives in Irmo.

He said he comes to Riverwalk to get exercise. Prince said he began to take his fitness a little more seriously in November with the birth of Lucy, his first grandchild.

“I walk and I pray and I work on my sermons,” said Prince, who pastors at the Columbia Church of Christ in West Columbia.

“It’s so beautiful here,” he said of Riverwalk.

Prince also said he is thankful for the warmer weather that began in the last week or so. He said he was not as consistent in his exercise routine when the weather was cold.

Anita Barnes lives in Sumter and works at Lexington Medical Center.

“A girl I work with lives in Cayce. She told me about Riverwalk. This is the first time I’ve been here. It’s beautiful over here.

And I didn’t realize how close it is.”

Barnes said she will be sure to come back to the West Columbia Riverwalk.

Michael Taylor recently moved back to Columbia after living in Western Kentucky.

“It’s nice to see something being done to help people enjoy the river,” said Taylor.

He said before he moved away there was no development, and little access to the river.

Emma Fairchild and Bailey Williams are from Lexington, but both USC freshmen live on-campus. They are runners and use Riverwalk to exercise. Wednesday was their first day back on Riverwalk in the new school year.

“We come out here in the summer, too,” said Fairchild. She said she is glad the weather is warmer and she expects to come more often in the spring semester that ends in May. Williams said she enjoys Riverwalk more since the stretch of the trail that included the boardwalk under the Gervais Street Bridge was repaired. “I’m so glad they fixed it from the damaged caused by the flood,” said Williams.

Helen Holbrook is a veteran user of West Columbia’s Riverwalk. She said she and her husband, Nathan, used to come walk on the scenic trail before they were married. That was four or five years ago. Now Helen brings the couples’ 19-month-old son, Mathias, to Riverwalk for rides in the stroller.

Holbrook, who lives in the Red Bank area, said her husband is in school at USC, and she comes to Riverwalk while he is in class.

She said she depends on Riverwalk and it’s important to have a place to get outside for her and her son.

“We come several times a week,” Holbrook said. “It’s very impressive.”

Riverwalk has become such a focal point of West Columbia. And that is most apparent to those who want to start 2018 on a track to increase their fitness plans. And if it’s not quite warm enough for an outside fitness activity, West Columbia offers indoor facilities that allow working out in climate controlled comfort.

GMS robotics team competes at regionals

GMS students earn chair in region orchestra

Students from Gilbert Middle traveled to their first robotics competition of 2018, finishing in the top 12. The Einstein Tribe Robotics Team represented GMS at the FIRST Lego League Columbia Qualifier on January 6 at Meadow Glen Middle School. Coached by GMS STEM Teacher Anthony C. Bertone and Assistant Coach Edward McGee, members of the Einstein Tribe Robotics Team include Braden A. DuBois, Gilbert G. Elkins, Connor H. Layson, Dorian G. Parriott, Nathaniel W. Patterson and Damon L. Ratliff.

The talent and hard work of two Gilbert Middle School students earned each of them a chair in a regional orchestra group this winter. Eighth-graders Craig R. Heflin and M. Quinton Curry performed with the Region 3 Orchestra Nov. 17–18 at Irmo High School. Heflin plays the viola; Curry performs on bass.
