Safely dispose of your old, unwanted medications

ast Saturday, we participated in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, a nationwide campaign encouraging people to get rid of their unused medications at collection sites that will safely dispose of the drugs.

Authors’ Showcase Dec. 2 at Lexington Library Event benefits Turning Pages adult literacy tutoring

Marv Ward is participating Dec. 2. in Authors for Literacy, benefitting Turning Pages, at Lexington County Library, 11 am to 2 pm. Ward’s book of poetry, “The Lone Minstrel,” will be available with his latest CD : “Catharsis.”

Book lovers who arrive at Lexington County Public Library Saturday, Dec. 2, will meet a baker’s dozen of top area authors.

In turn, Authors for Literacy will introduce attendees to villains and champions, lovers and comics, successes and failures – all characters showing up in this full shelf of locally-written books being showcased that day.

The Dec. 2 book event benefits Turning Pages’s adult literacy tutoring.

Ben Farley will introduce attendees to an accomplished Lake Murray sailor who sails his way through a sea of grief and finds new love on the impounded waters nearby in “Corbin’s Rubi-Yacht.”

Veronica Riccasola introduces a runner who finds inner strength to take on the expanse of the Lake Murray Dam, in “The Dam Run: Conquering Lake Murray Dam.” Jane Herlong will invite attendees behind closed doors for a humorous look at how a family can function (or perhaps dis-function) in “Rhinestones on My Flip Flops: Choosing Extravagant Joy in the Midst of Everyday Mess-ups.”

Pat McNeely will reveal a previously-unknown side of William Tecumseh Sherman.

Other authors include Tom Poland, Rachel Haynie, Marv Ward, John Bloodworth, Jerlean Noble, Debbie Yoho, Stephanie Suell, Becky Dewitt and Jerry Bellune.

Also to be introduced will be South Carolina’s only Confederate surgeon and his museum-quality collecting habits.

A little brown hunting dog and how the Boykin Spaniel wagged its way into the hearts of South Carolinians to become the state dog in 1985 will also be part of the showcase.

Attendees will have the opportunity to meet literary figures who represent local history, from centuries past and recent weeks - and many other memorable characters.

The pre-holiday event is to share local literature while supporting the Midlands adult literacy Turning Pages (for Possibilities.)

According to Turning Pages Director Chris Matthews, “Adult illiteracy is a chronic problem in Richland and Lexington counties, where 10% to 12% of adults are functionally illiterate.”

For nearly a half century, Turning Pages has worked to solve this problem in small groups and one-on-one to help improve reading and writing skills, Matthews said.

The free event is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 2 at Lexington County Library Main Branch.

The blues bled through, even into Marv Ward’s early rock and roll music.

“I love the blues, but I’ve always had a rock and roll heart,” Marv Ward has often said.

He’s sung other composers’ rock and blues, he’s sung his own compositions and arrangements, and now he’s added a new kind of performance.

He’s doing poetry readings, and it’s his poetry, some fermented over decades.

“Lyrics rhyme and my poetry is open verse — that’s the difference.”

Starting out as a kid drummer, then adding vocals for club performances when time was just starting to change his voice, Ward learned the front and back sides of performance.

Each was a refrain and response to the other, so he became a very well-rounded musician.

Performing up front or playing with a band on the road, he learned the technical side of acoustics by necessity.

And he gave as good as he took.

Licks he swiped from musicians he admired went into his own arrangements.

Ultimately, he arranged and produced for a wide range of other musicians, so the responses he’d swiped came back around and did some good for other talent.

Even in those early days, he was writing poetry.

“As the words came to me, I’d write them down — sometimes on walls of places I was staying,” Ward recalled.

“Or I’d write on bar napkins, then work the rest of the poems out later, when

I’d had time to think about how the thoughts fit together, like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.”

No wonder he named one of his songs “The Bar Napkins Blues.”

He said poetry writing “was sorta’ my homage to Jack Kerouac back then – although my biggest influence and poetry idol has been Lawrence Ferlinghetti.”

A lot of his early playing gigs were in Newport, Rhode Island.

“One year after Labor Day when the resort clubs rolled up the carpet, I looked in the mirror and told myself, ‘Marv, if you were gonna’ make it big in Rock and Roll, you’d have made it by now.’”

Time to find new direction, he decided, so he packed up his guitar and what poems he still had or could remember and headed South.

The Virginia native’s folks were back in Charlotte by then, so he stayed with them and enrolled in broadcasting school.

Before he could finish the short course, he got hired away from class to fill in for a band headed out on tour.

“When that gig was done, I finished the course and got hired again.”

For a little more than three decades, he ran what was pretty much a one-man production shop for Richland (School District) One. Oftentimes his broadcasting efforts for the district

transmitted over SCETV, and all of it helped him stay current, and keep the school district current with fastchanging technologies affecting the broadcasting arena.

Because his work didn’t always fit a nine-to-five structure, his supervisors didn’t mind if occasionally he took a day when he had an opportunity to perform.

Now his decades of performance experience is playing out another way.

He is reading his poetry at literary events.

“A buddy told me I should pull all the poetry together into a book, so I started gathering it up,” Ward recalled.

“I sent the entire manuscript to Cindi Boiter of Jasper Magazine, telling her if she saw any poems she wanted to publish, she could.”

Ward was stunned some months later when “I got a text from Cindi saying Broad River Books, an imprint of Muddy Ford Press, wanted to publish the entire manuscript.”

Since the release of “The Lone Minstrel”, Ward has been booked for a steady stream of reading and signing events.

“Sometimes I read a little and play a little,” he said.

Note: Ward, who arranged, produced and played on Jellyroll and Delicious Dish’s new CD, will perform with that group at City Roots November 21.

A

nother Halloween has come and gone.

If you’re wondering what to do with your leftover trick-or-teat candy, here’s a thought: perhaps you could share it with politicians in Washington.

It seems there’s a stash of sweets hidden away on Capitol Hill. And here’s the story of how it came to be.

Back in the early 1960s, a fellow named George Murphy was looking for a new career.

Planting new churches

akeside Church was started in the Lexington County Arts Association Theater.

Some of you have noticed a lot of activity around the theater on Sundays recently.

That’s because a new church is meeting there.

It is a church planted by a group of churches that also started Seacoast in the Charleston area.

Lead Pastor Chris Martinez said he had felt the call to plant a church somewhere but didn’t know where. He joined a friend planting a church in Poplar Bluff, N.C. But he still hoped for one of his own.

He connected with Pastor Reece LeRoy in Augusta, Ga. There, he met an older couple and a man whose fiancé were looking for a new church in Lexington.

Chris and wife moved to Lexington though they hadn’t sold their home yet. As they were loading the van to move, a buyer made an offer on the house. How Providential is that?

Chris started working at Richland 1 school District and preached in Augusta with Pastor LeRoy. Almost immediately 40 people started getting the new church going. I asked Chris “why another

new church?”

He said 135,000 people in Lexington County were without a church and new churches reach those new to the area. They are attracted to be part of building something new and different.

They held their first service Jan. 22, 2017, and now have around 100 attending each week at 10:30 a.m.

Lakeside Church’s four principles are to help people fall in love with Jesus, find a church family, live in the freedom of Christ and actively find and pursue their purpose. Their service is contemporary and they have programs for K-5th grade.

Small groups meet during the week.

They have already: • Sent a missionary to Tanzania to home school the children of Wycliff Bible Translators.

• Geared up for a November “Compassion” effort to highlight existing ministries with poeplepower and financial assistance.

They plan future church plants and cooperation with other local churches.

ting for a mission to see who and what might halt the crumbling of historic Trinity Episcopal Church.

I met Bill at the Belmont Inn and we made our way to the home of a woman who understands the importance of saving landmarks — May Robertson Baskin Hutchinson. Later May, daughter, Jean Robertson Hutchinson, and Bill and I would walk the grounds at a church, beautiful still, but crying for salvation.

May, Abbeville’s matriarch, turned 95 April 5. Her 95th birthday raised $11,000 for Trinity Episcopal Church.

“Seems like the whole town came,” said May. “It was amazing.”

Aug. 31 amazed, too, a day when passing decades astonished me. I’d see a circa 1840 coastal redwood, Sequioa sempervirens (California redwood) that came from a nursery in Pomaria, Summers Nursery. Nine Hutchinson cats sleep beneath this West Coast monarch with its candy-canetwisting cedar-like bark.

Each Christmas, Jean’s grandmother would send a box of fragrant redwood boughs for decorations. Her mother, opening the box, would say: “The Christmas spirit jumped out of the box into the house.” Even though Trinity’s structure has been closed since January due to the steeple’s instability, boughs will grace the church’s doors. Falling water sets metal to ringing and a pealing suffuses the air. I stop, arrested by this unearthly music.

“High, note, low note, low note,” says Jean. “Do you drink Starbucks coffee?”

“I do.”

“See the figure on top of the fountain. That’s Melusine, goddess of freshwater, and the same figure in the Starbucks logo. She had human form everyday except Saturday when she took the form of a dragon.

Saturdays, she wouldn’t let her husband see her bathe.

One Saturday he bored a hole in the bathroom door.

Sure enough, the gargoyle resembles Starbucks’ logo, a mermaid, if you will, holding twin tails.

Bill walks over to the fountain, drawn by the melodic cascades spilling into three metal basins and a catchall basin where water flows up anew. “That is exquisite,” he says in a hushed tone of reverence. This fountain is beyond extraordinary.

The foundry that built it also helped build the United States Capitol dome. It built as well the fountain (1858) in Savannah at Forsyth Square. Colonel Jehu Foster Marshall, the major benefactor of Trinity’s church building, placed the fountain in his garden in the mid-1850s.

And then she makes an earthshaking pronouncement. “I was the only child in the United States who never had a teddy bear.”

She had a monkey. Well, that’s all right. In time she would live in a home soaked to the beams and joists in history. May’s house, designed by architect Gustavus Theodore Berg, was built in 1880. Berg also worked on designs for the South Carolina Statehouse some 76 miles distance as the crow flies. About that teddy bear.

Time was on May’s side, not so the church she loves.

Overdose deaths drop in Lexington County Coroner reports 30-plus deaths so far this year

So far, 30 people have died from drug overdoses in Lexington County.

That’s down from 44 last year.

Of the 44 last year, opioids were found in 65% of the victims.

It is considered the primary contributor to such fatalities.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher reported 30 opioid related deaths this year with 5 pending confirmation.

A concerned subscriber wants to know how the county fares in its recycling efforts.

Lexington County Public Information Officer Harrison Cahill fielded the reader’s questions and provided answers to curiosities other readers have shared.

Q. Once recycling is dropped off at one of the county sites, where does it go and how is it sorted and handled?

A. Materials collected for recycling from the curbside (95-gallon carts), dropped off at the County Collection and Recycling Centers and collected at businesses, are transported to a Material Recycling Facility (MRF) for sorting and marketing the segregated materials. Most of the materials in the area are transported to the SONOCO MRF in Columbia.

Several other facilities such as at Pratt Industries only process paper and cardboard.

Once the materials reach the MRF, they are sorted and compressed into bales.

Glass is processed separately.

The bales are loaded into tractor trailers and transported to companies that process the materials for new products.

Q. In what ways does recycling benefit the county?

A. County residents benefit from the recycling program several ways: - Waste that would normally fill up our land fills are available for new products.

- Reducing the the landfill volume extends the life of the landfill for waste that cannot be recycled.

- Recycling directly benefits taxpayers by reducing the cost of transportation and disposal of waste at the landfill. During Fiscal Year 2015-16 (July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016) a total of 22,324 tons of household waste were recycled.

It would have cost about $820,000 in landfill disposal costs.

Q. Does the county make money from recycling program?

A. The county annually receives revenue for sale of recycled materials such as cardboard, paper, glass, aluminum and metal.

The county also markets compost and mulch from yard waste.

The prescription medication normally related to the overdoses is hydrocodone with heroin being the illicit drug usually related to the death. Seven who died were over the age of 50. Others are from 27 to 49.

For perspective, 44 deaths last year are just one shy of the 45 lives claimed in motor vehicle incidents across the county in 2016.

The numbers were similar in 2015, as 46 people died by accidental overdose with 54% testing positive for opioids.

Of the 44 deaths in 2016, 22 victims were aged 41 or older.

The prevalence of opioid addiction and overdose death has

caused national concern in recent years, culminating in President Donald Trump’s emergency declaration on Oct. 26.

“This epidemic is a national health emergency,” President Trump said. “As Americans, we cannot allow this to continue. We can be the generation that ends the opioid epidemic.”

The President said opioid drug overdoses are currently the No. 1 cause of unintentional deaths in America.

More people are dying from these prescription drugs than car accidents and gun homicides combined, he said.

S.C. Attorney General Alan Wilson said President Trump’s decla-

ration will help South Carolina by allowing access to federal resources to treat addiction.

“The opioid epidemic is devastating to South Carolina families,” Wilson said.

“Last year, South Carolina ranked 9th in the nation in opioid prescribing rates. Since 2011, more than 3,000 South Carolinians have died from prescription opioid overdoses.

“We welcome the president’s declaration and the additional resources that come with it.”

Wilson has filed a lawsuit against Purdue Pharma, a maker of oxycontin and other opioids.

The suit alleges unfair and deceptive marketing tactics by

Trump’s emergency declaration will allow: · The Department of Health and Human Services to redeploy public health workers and researchers from working on other health issues to work on opioid addiction. · The HHS secretary to make it easier to get drugs that treat addiction and overdoses. · HHS can also waive rules to make it easier to get inpatient drug treatment through Medicaid. Normally, Medicaid cannot reimburse for drug treatment in residential facilities with 16 or more beds.

Required Skills: • Ideally, candidates should have experience with covering multiple beats, including crime, government, and education.
