Lexington Medical Center Foundation celebrates Dan Jones and his reappointment to the Board of Directors.

Mr. Jones served as the Vice President of Government Relations with Time Warner Cable of South Carolina before retiring in March 2016.

He was appointed by the Lexington County Council to the Lexington Medical Center Board of Directors in 2010 where he served as Chairman, Vice Chairman, and Secretary. He is Past President of Brookland-Cayce High School Education Foundation and has also served as President of Charleston Optimist Club, Columbia Optimist Club Board of Directors, and Vice President for Utilities State Government Organization. He was appointed by Governor Carroll Campbell in 1987 as Commissioner for the South Carolina Water Resources Commission and Elected Chairman of Policy and Planning Committee of the Commission serving until December 1991. Mr. Jones was awarded the Stilwell Award in 2015 by the Lexington Medical Center Foundation for Achievement in Philanthropy. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Hospital Association.

Mr. Jones was born in Columbia, South Carolina, is a member of Trinity Baptist Church, and is married with three children and three grandchildren.

Foundation Program Highlight: Hospital to Home The LMCF Board of Directors granted $105,600.00 to support Hospital to Home, an internal grant submitted by LMC’s Medical Social Services.

Every year, thousands of recently discharged patients are re-

admitted to the hospital within 30 days because they lack resources and a caregiver to help them thrive at home.

They lack transportation to follow-up appointments, are forgetful about medication schedules, cannot shop for food, and struggle with mobility that prevents activities of daily living. As a result, many times they return to the hospital.

The Hospital to Home program provides at least 20 hours of in-home, non-medical care to patients deemed high risk with chronic, co-morbid diseases like heart failure, COPD, and pneumonia who may not have a solid support system.

Hospital to Home is free to all participants and the goal is to reduce hospital readmissions.

Diet Mountain Dew (honestly my favorite) is possibly the worst soda drink. A twenty ounce bottle of Diet Dew has the equivalent of 19 teaspoons of sugar and 93 milligrams of caffeine (the same as NoDoz).

Energy and Sports drinks can actually be worse than soda drinks, damaging enamel and boosting the risk of cavities, according to a new study.

“The big misconception is that energy drinks and sports drinks are healthier than soda for oral health,” says researcher Poonam Jain, BDS, MPH, associate professor and director of community dentistry at the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine.

“This study completely disproves that, because they erode or thin out the enamel of the teeth, leaving them more susceptible to decay and sensitivity.”

Jain and her team tested 13 sports drinks and nine energy drinks for acidity. They tested six drinks for their effects on tooth enamel and found both types caused damage. Energy drinks, however, were twice as bad. Damaged tooth enamel cannot be fixed with just

toothpaste or rinses, no matter what marketing hype suggests.

The drinks are especially popular among teens and young adults. Up to half of U.S. teens and young adults drink energy drinks, and more than half have at least one sports drink a day, according to the researchers.

They tested the acidity levels of all 22 drinks. They found the levels of acidity in the drinks vary between brands and between flavors of the same brands.

Gatorade Blue had the highest acidity among sports drinks. Next was Hydr8.

Red Bull, Monster, Rockstar and Von Dutch are all energy drinks with high acidity too.

So what is the answer? According to Jain, diluting the drinks with water is a great idea. Also, rinsing your mouth out with water, and waiting 30 minutes to brush your teeth is important too. (When someone brushes their teeth immediately after drinking one of these drinks, they literally brush the acid into the

enamel and soft roots of their teeth, causing ditches into the roots of the teeth and thinning of the enamel. Dentists call these erosions and thinning NCLOUO (non carious lesions of unknown origin).

So the moral of this story is to watch what you drink, whether it is soda, energy or sports drinks. If you do drink these, limit your use, and rinse your mouth thoroughly and wait for 30 minutes before you brush your teeth.

A family of veterans care for their own

They answered the most selfless call.

With God and county in mind, they served.

And when they returned, they somehow became lost to those they protected.

Many veterans find themselves without family to claim them in their final hours.

Thanks to a local American Legion post, six servicemen recently received the reverance they deserve.

“We don’t ever really know how they ended up (unclaimed),” said Stephen Goulet, 1st Vice Commander of American Legion Post 193.

“Some are homeless, some outlive their families and some have had their families abandon them and they end up being left alone.

“These folks here, they served their country, and they deserve to be buried with honor and dignity.”

Members of the American Legion and VFW regularly check with coroners and funeral homes for unclaimed veterans.

If the deceased are found to be former service members, the Legionnaires and other veterans’ groups see to their proper burial.

On Friday, March 3, Goulet met with fellow Legionnaires at Chapin Town Hall as they joined members of the Patriot Guard, Vietnam Veterans of America, The Veterans of Foreign Wars and many other veterans from across the state to bury these six Army veterans: • Capt. DJJ students, staff honor unclaimed veterans at ceremony

On March 3, six unclaimed veterans were laid to rest at Fort Jackson.

Their cremated remains were placed into ornate wooden urns, much like those found at funeral homes across the state.

These urns, however, have an added special element to their craftsmanship: They're constructed by students at the S.C. Department of Juvenile Justice facility on Broad River Road.

Under the guidance of carpentry instructor Sam Bower, three students spent six to eight hours on each urn, cutting, sanding, fitting, staining and glossing the pieces that form the ceremonial pieces.

“The practicum of carpentry is anything but simple and building a cube provides the opportunity to challenge and teach the juveniles many skills and use of tools in the woodshop,” Bower said.

"Everybody needs to learn to give back," Bower said.

"This is just one way that I can help my kids in my program give back."

"I am humbled and thankful to have our juveniles help provide a dignified remembrance for those who served our country," said acting

DJJ Director Freddie Pough.

"Veterans deserve our gratitude and respect. It also serves as a reminder to our DJJ juveniles to serve as they can, where they can. DJJ wants to build and rehabilitate our juveniles to return into their community and have positive change."

It’s a Dog’s Life Two words

It was the first day of school after summer vacation.

The kids had all arrived in the high school sophomore English class, and were chatting away and making new friends.

Then, in walked a very stern-looking English teacher and a hush fell over the room as the kids scurried to their seats.

The stern teacher silently panned his gaze across all the kids.

After about a minute or so, he spoke.

“From the outset, I want you all to know that there are two words that are absolutely unacceptable in this classroom,” he said. “You cannot use them as you recite, or in any of your papers, tests, or homework. Using these words even once, will get you a failing grade for that quarter.

The first one is ‘gross,’ and the other one is ‘cool.’

Are there any questions?”

After a few moments of silence, this gawky teen at the back of the room raised his hand, and the teacher called on him.

In a pubescent croaking voice, the kid asked, “So, what are they?”

Too helpful One day my brother-in-law noticed an elderly lady slowly pushing a cart through the supermarket parking lot.

Ever courteous, he insisted on taking it over for her.

The woman struggled alongside, doing her best to keep up.

At the entrance, he said, “Here you go, Ma’am,” and gave her the cart.

Catching her breath, she said, “Thank you, but I was using it to lean on.”

The Vatican decided to go after being asked to have a panel there. The panel, titled Compassionate Disruption, has become one of this year’s most talked about events. In it, Bishop Tighe discusses the Vatican’s way to trying to reach out via social media.

Even the Pope didn’t receive a warm welcome to Twitter at first. However, a quick search and all I see are daily tweets meant to be uplifting and reminding of a Christian spirit.

I think it is pretty cool that the leader of the Christian faith can use social media to grab attention and answer questions. He uses social media to promote good thoughts instead of negativity.

If the Vatican is using social media to do good, what about you? What can you do on social media to downplay the amount of negativity on it and uplift other people?

by Southwest, in Austin, Texas.

Frog prince An 80-year-old woman was walking down the main street in her hometown one evening when she heard a low voice say, “Hey, lady.”

She looked around to see who was talking but upon seeing nobody there she shrugged it all off and continued walking.

Before she got another five feet, she heard the same voice, only a little louder, say, “Hey lady!”

She once again looked around and didn’t see anybody, but when she went to walk again she saw a frog sitting at her feet looking at her.

The frog then opened his mouth and said, “Could you please help me?”

The elderly woman was shocked at first but picked up the little frog and asked him what he needed.

How We Got Guam: It’s Easy to Win When Your Enemy Doesn’t Know There’s a War

A

dmit it: you’ve never stopped to wonder how the United States gained the Pacific island of Guam, have you?

There's no reason to. It doesn’t come up in dinner party conversations. And they certainly didn’t teach it in school.

Guam wasn’t seized in some great battle or handed over through diplomatic negotiation.

The reason we acquired it was simple: bureaucratic bungling.

As they said in the movie Cool Hand Luke, “What we have here is failure to communicate.”

Here’s how it went down.

Barely 210 square miles, tiny Guam is located in the western Pacific. There’s nothing special about the island. It was just a handy spot for sailing ships to stop on their way to distant places such as China.

Spain claimed the place in the 1660s and it remained a remote outpost of that far-flung empire for nearly 250 years.

Until the Spanish-AmericanWar. After the battleship USS Maine exploded amid shady circumstances in Havana Harbor in early 1898, Congress declared war on the crumbling Spanish Empire on April 21.

Under the command of Capt. Henry Glass, the USS Charleston engaged the tiny Pacific island of Guam “in combat” on June 20, 1898, by firing several cannons at Fort Santa Cruz as part of the Spanish-American War. In response, a small — and oblivious — company of Span-

ish soldiers approached the American vessel and thanked them for the gun salute. The Guam regiment had no clue Spain and the U.S. were at war, as messages still traveled by sea at the time.

Places like Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines became American possessions following fierce battles at San Juan Hill and Manila Bay. Since we were gobbling up so many Spanish territories, the brass in Washington decided grabbing Guam was a wise move.

The Navy’s role was vastly expanding in the Pacific and Guam would make a nifty coaling station. (Steam ships used plenty of coal and often needed to pick up an additional supply en route.)

The fort didn’t fire a single shot back. The Americans thought that was odd.

So they sent a boat over to the Japanese ship to inquire about the eerie silence.

Then something strange happened.

While the boat was rowing toward the Japanese vessel, another boat bearing a Spanish flag was rowing toward the Charleston. The four men in it waved friendly gestures.

was ordered to take the cruiser USS Charleston and seize the little island.

She was accompanied by three steamers filled with troops. If the Spanish were willing to defend Guam, Uncle Sam was ready to fight for it.

The little flotilla arrived on June 20. Glass left the transports at sea and boldly sailed into Guam’s major harbor.

All he encountered was a harmless Japanese merchant ship. So the Charleston dropped anchor and fired 13 cannon blasts toward Fort Santa Cruz, a decaying relic from

White Knoll High dominated this year’s Lady Wildcat Invitational at Pine Grove Softball Complex.

The Lady Timberwolves won five straight games to claim the tournament title. They went 2-0 on Day One, routing Irmo 15-5 and Fort Mill 12-2.

On Day Two, White Knoll defeated Spring Valley 11-1 and Gray Collegiate 15-11 to advance to the final.

In the championship game, the Timberwolves defeated last year’s winner North

Davidson 11-3. Taylor Antley had a 3-run homer in the fifth inning, the team’s fifth of the Invitational.

The Lady Timberwolves outscored the opposition 64-21, had 32 singles, seven doubles and three triples.

Pitcher Andrea Lyon had 14 strikeouts.

In the gold championship, Gilbert fell to Fort Mill 8-2. The Lady Indians went 3-2 in the tournament, winning a pair of one-run games 13-12 over River Bluff and 8-7 over James Island this past Saturday.

day. After the loss to Gilbert, they fell 104 to North Davidson and lost 21-12 to Gray Collegiate in the Silver championship.

After going winless on Day 1, host team Lexington won three straight games to claim the bronze championship. They defeated North Davidson 5-2, shut out James Island 10-1 and downed Spring Valley 11-6.

The platinum championship between James Island and Irmo did not take place.

The Lady Yellow Jackets had to forfeit because they did not have an available pitcher.

They dropped a rope ladder and the Spaniards came aboard.

The port commander, its doctor and the two others smiled broadly. They were thrilled by the surprise visit, they said.

They thanked the Americans for “saluting” the Spanish flag with the cannon fire.

They sheepishly admitted they were out of gunpowder, but if the Americans would be so kind as to give them some they

would happily fire a salute in return as required by military etiquette.

It was quite a surprise when Glass informed the Spaniards they were prisoners of war.

Now it was their turn to the confused.

How could they be prisoners of war, they asked, when there was no war?

The war was real alright.

But Madrid hadn’t bothered to inform Guam’s garrison about it. In the days before radio communication, all messages were delivered by ship. And the last time the Spaniards had heard from the mother country was April 14, seven days before war was declared.

The Spanish weren’t in a position to resist.

The garrison consisted of a ragtag collection of 69 men with four cannons that didn’t work. And even if the guns had been serviceable, they didn’t have the gunpowder to fire them.

So Guam became an American territory — until Dec. 7, 1941, when Japanese troops seized it hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The U.S. reclaimed the island after a bloody battle in the summer of 1944. Old Glory has flown over it ever since.

What exactly is the moral of this story, you ask?

After searching high and low I could only come up with this: when your country is at war, “failure to communicate” can carry disastrous consequences.

Oh, and make sure the gunpowder gets there, too.
