Paterson (R) — A bus

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (PG-13) — A band

of folks who’ve been kicked around by the evil Empire join up with the Rebel Alliance to secure secret plans revealing the weakness of the new imperial superweapon. Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) lost her father (Mads Mikkelsen) when he was kidnapped and forced to engineer the Death Star.

Jyn and crew — including Diego Luna as a brooding Rebel captain, Donnie Yen as a blind mystic and an endearing droid (voiced by Alan Tudyk) — go on a daring-butnecessary mission that sets up the events of the original “Star Wars” trilogy.

As a one-off story set in the “Star Wars” universe, but adjacent to the main heroes, this story has a darker-but-stillhopeful tone, and it works.

The Force Awakens was fun, but felt cramped for following its predecessors too closely. I saw a thrilling and emotional sci-fi epic, a welcome addition to the Star Wars canon, and one that doesn’t entirely revolve around Skywalker family dysfunctions threatening the galaxy.

(R) — When an uptight CEO (Jennifer Aniston) plans to shut down the failing branch run by her braggadocious brother (T.J. Miller), there’s only one thing to do: throw a party to woo a wealthy client, but not just any party — it must be wild, “buck wild.”

That’s the general logic and tone of this film. Jason Bateman and Olivia Munn also are on the party-planning committee, but fail to cut memorable characters from the blank page.

SNL’s Kate McKinnon managed to get some laughs out of me as the most uncool H.R. lady ever.

With the ensemble cast, and T.J. Miller’s ongoing success with “Silicon Valley,” I had some hope for this one.

Instead, it seems like directors Will Speck and Josh Gordon figured a solid combination would be to have funny people improvising in between crazy set pieces that keep the energy up. Solid log-

ic, but it doesn’t really come together.

The Bounce Back (PG-13) — Matthew Taylor (Shemar Moore) is a hunky relationship guru pushing his new book about getting over the past and starting anew (just guess what it’s called).

While promoting away,

gorgeous therapist Nadine (Kristin Peralta) calls him out, refutes his philosophies and the two statuesque beings begin an amiable public feud.

Directed by Jim Jarmusch, the film follows Paterson through his daily routines, observing life and articulating the beauty of it through his poetry.

While Paterson’s days follow a clear track, Laura is driven to constantly explore new things — baking, painting, music.

There isn’t a lot of high drama, but a lot of success showing the everyday in new ways, slowing things down for a while.

The Eyes Have It The Pet Doctor 359-6611

A

famous literary line says that the eyes are the windows to the soul. A more accurate description of the eyes is that they are windows to the health of your pet. I hope to discuss some of the more common eye issues we see in our pets.

Bloodshot eyes A bloodshot appearing eye is one of the most common that we see. Sometimes the eye is fine when you leave home and then is red when you arrive at our office.

This case is more related to stress and should resolve when you get back home.

If the eye is already red at home, there is a problem. It may be that only the white part of the eye, known as the sclera, is inflamed.

However, the conjunctiva, which is the pink tissue that lines the inner surface of the eyelids, can also become inflamed and swollen. When the redness is causing obvious pain you will notice your pet squinting the eye or rubbing at the eye or face.

Corneal ulcer The most common reason for a suddenly painful and red eye is a corneal ulcer. This is a scratch or injury on the clear surface of the eye, also known as the cornea. There are many causes such as 1. Contact with plants, thorns, or bushes 2. Scratches from another animal – cat scratches can become a big problem as the scratch may heal quickly but then trap infection within the eye.

3. Self-inflicted injury that occurs from rubbing at the eye due to another eye problem or from scratching at the ear or face.

4. Chemical irritation such as shampoo during a bath 5. Foreign body injury such as plant material getting caught under the eyelid and then scratching the eye.

A corneal ulcer is diagnosed by doing a fluorescent stain of the eye. In the normal eye water runs off the smooth surface of the eye. In the case of

an ulcer, the stain will stick to the damaged area and be a bright green in color under a black light.

In most cases the ulcer will usually heal with the application of a topical antibiotic to prevent or treat infection and atropine to relieve pain.

Your pet may also have to wear an Elizabethan collar (the cone of shame) to prevent more self-trauma. In most cases the ulcer will be resolved within 2 weeks.

Unfortunately, some cases can develop complications such as an indolent ulcer, melting ulcer, or descemetocele. If the eye should suddenly begin to look worse, become more painful, or have a discharge; get an immediate recheck.

In these cases, your veterinarian will need to take additional steps to deal with these issues; and in some cases, you may need to see a veterinary ophthalmologist.

KCS Another cause of a red eye that may be accompanied by a mucoid discharge is dry eye, also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca or KCS for short. It is less likely these symptoms are allergy related.

Basically, your dog or cat is unable to produce adequate tears to keep the eye moistened and flushed out.

The most common cause is related to genetics in dogs and herpes virus in cats. Certain dog breeds such as cocker spaniels, pugs, Chihuahua, Yorkshire terriers, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and bulldogs are high on the list.

In cats it is more common in Persians, Himalayans, Abyssinians, Burmese and even domestic shorthairs. Fortunately, this disease is not as prevalent in cats.

Removal of a prolapsed third eyelid gland can also lead to the disease. Certain drugs can lead to dry eye along with certain diseases such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, and Cushings.

Facial paralysis can trigger a dry eye. The disease is diagnosed by testing tear production in your pet using the Schirmer tear test.

Treatment involves topical medication to boost tear production and topical tear replacements.

If left untreated, the disease can become very painful and lead to blindness and potential loss of the eye or eyes. It is

far more common to see this disease than glaucoma.

Glaucoma Glaucoma is another disease that we and our pets can both develop. This disease causes elevated pressures in the eyes and can affect one or both eyes.

It results from an inability of the fluid in the eye to drain properly. This increase in pressure causes pain and can lead to blindness.

It is diagnosed by using a tonometer to measure the eye pressure.

Glaucoma requires lifelong treatment unless an underlying cause can be reversed or successfully treated. In most cases glaucoma is not curable, and once vision is lost it will not return.

You must be diligent about topical medication as it doesn’t take long for eye pressures to spike.

In some cases, the eye or eyes may need to be removed because they do not respond to medication and cause ongoing pain. Again, your pet may need to see an ophthalmologist.

Cataracts Cataracts are the last disease I will discuss. It is related to changes in the lens of the eye.

In dogs, the majority of cataracts are inherited but diabetes, trauma, nutritional deficiencies, and pre-existing intraocular diseases can be some of the other causes.

In cats cataracts are generally secondary to chronic anterior uveitis. Cataracts should not be confused with a normal age related change called nuclear sclerosis. In nuclear sclerosis there is an increase in the central density of the lens.

In dogs, it usually starts around 7 years of age and really doesn’t impact a dog’s vision until 12 to 15 years of age.

They may hesitate in dim light or when trying to go down steps or have trouble locating that treat on the floor.

A cataract is an opacity of the lens. It can be partial or complete and prevents light penetration into the eye. A complete cataract can cause blindness in the eye and if bilateral, your pet can be completely blind.

Some pets can adapt well to the blindness but others may not. Cataracts can lead to other problems such as glaucoma.

Treatment of cataracts involves surgery by a veterinary ophthalmologist. It takes a dedicated owner to medicate their pet following surgery.

Not all pets require surgery, but you would need to see a veterinary ophthalmologist to make that decision.

Fortunately, we now have a veterinary ophthalmologist coming to the Lexington area

every other week. They hope to soon be coming every week.

I have been brief in my descriptions of these diseases and have only touched on the most common ones. Your veterinarian can discuss your pet’s eye problems in more detail. Early treatment is often the key in preserving your pets’ vision.

The Hotel Eklund By the time we reached Clayton on the New Mexico border, we were ready for food and sleep. We found a charming place, the Hotel Eklund, run by Beth Wise and her sister.

Built in 1892, the historic hotel has 26 guest rooms, two dining rooms, and in the Old West tradition celebrated in movies, a saloon.

One of our favorite mystery writers, James Lee Burke,

“We walked to a 19th-century hotel named the Eklund and had dinner in a dining room paneled with handcarved mahogany.

On the wall of the lobby was a framed photograph of the outlaw Black Jack Ketchum being fitted with a noose on a freshly carpentered scaffold.

“Another photograph showed him after the trapdoor had collapsed under his feet. Most of the patrons entering or leaving the dining room were local people and took no notice of the photographic display…

“(We) walked outside under a turquoise sky…I looked back over my shoulder at the stone rigidity of the hotel and its scrollediron colonnade…and I wondered if cattle and railroad barons had hosted champagne dinners in the hotel dining room or if cowboys off the Goodnight-Love Trail had knocked back busthead whiskey in the saloon and shot holes in the ceiling with their six shooters.”

Black Jack Ketchum must have been Public Enemy No 1.

He was hanged for train robbery, but his crimes must have been frequent as he was the only man ever hanged in New Mexico for anything less than murder.

The next morning, fortified with a big breakfast, we headed across the Texas panhandle on two lane country roads.

The speed limit signs read an incredible 75 mph.

We stopped at a roadside convenience store and gas station and spotted a van marked Midnight Sun, Anchorage, Alaska. A large tool kit and spare tire were strapped on the back.

A blonde in her 40s came out of the store and approached the van.

We introduced ourselves and asked what she was doing so far from home.

Rickie told us she and her husband work with land owners on wind farms.

Her husband spent most of his time in the lower 48.

Once their kids were grown, they sold their home in Alaska, bought a mobile home and live in it wherever their work takes them.

In late fall, they drive north through Canada to spend the winter with their families. The trip is more than 3,600 miles, and, with luck, a 65-hour drive.

Rickie said many Canadian gas stations close for the winter in October so you have to take an ample supply of 5-gallon gas cans to make it to Anchorage.

They are hardy people, these Alaskans.

Parson Brownlow: The most hated man in the history of Tennessee

F

olks in the Volunteer State disagree about many things.

Are you a Vanderbilt fan, or do you root for the University of Tennessee?

Do you vote for the Democrats, or the Republicans? Appalachian bluegrass, or Memphis blues?

But people there unanimously agree on one thing: Parson Brownlow is the most hated man in Tennessee history.

Nearly 150 years after his death, just mentioning his name can trigger a firestorm of epic proportions.

He passionately despised (in no particular order) Baptists, the Devil, Democrats, Confederates, Andrew Johnson, and basically anyone who disagreed with him.

And he fought them all with every ounce of energy he possessed.

How did a 19th Century Methodist minister, newspaper editor, politician and all-around rabble-rouser get to be a divisive figure in the 21st Century, you ask?

William Gannaway Brownlow was born in Virginia in 1805.

Orphaned at age 10, he was passed from one relative to another until he became a carpenter at 18. A couple of years later, he attended a camp meeting.

To borrow from Hank Williams, young Brownlow “Saw the Light” and had a spiritual conversion. He put down his hammer and saw, put on the cloth and offered his divine services to the Methodist Church, ac-

quiring the nickname he would carry for the rest of his life: “Parson.”

Before we go on, you must understand something: Parson Brownlow lived in a world without shades of gray. Things (and more specifically people) were either deepest black or virtuous white. There was no in between, no middle ground. And so he charged into his ministry with a takeno-prisoners approach.

He was sent to churches in North Carolina, where he spent most of his time fighting with fellow Protestant ministers.

When that didn’t work out, he was ordered to South Carolina, where he published a 70-page pamphlet that attacked Baptists so viciously, the locals demanded he be hanged (making him beat a fast path back to Virginia).

With his fiery style, a friend suggested he start a newspaper in Tennessee supporting the Whig political party. Parson Brownlow jumped into his new career like a flamethrower going full blast.

He was as divisive as ever: folks either loved or hated him, and he was perfectly happy to be treated either way.

In 1840, he ran into a former Whig who had switched to the Democrats on a public street. They argued; Parson Brownlow beat the guy with a cane, who in turn shot the editor in his thigh.

In 1845, he ran for a seat in Congress against former tailor and future U.S. president Andrew Johnson.

It was every bit as nasty as you would expect, with Democrat Johnson winning.

That sparked an intensely personal, burning hatred for Johnson which Parson Brownlow nurtured till the day he died.

Eventually settling in Knoxville, it was more of the same: a relentless round of savage attacks on his political and sectarian opponents of all stripes.

He caused a controversy in 1856 when he published a book firing back at a Baptist minister whose own book had attacked Methodists. Eyebrows were raised because Parson Brownlow’s book contained an illustration showing a Baptist man put-

When the Civil War rolled around, Tennessee joined the Confederacy but Parson Brownlow did not.

He was such an outspoken Federalist that local Confederate leaders drove him out of Knoxville.

In exile, he was paraded around the North as an example of a “good Southerner” who had stayed loyal to the Union.

And he loved the limelight, too.

A best-selling dime novel was published in 1863 called, Parson Brownlow and the Unionists of East Tennessee, inspiring a Philadelphia songwriter to compose, “The Parson Brownlow Quickstep.”

In January 1865, a Unionist convention nominated him for governor.

He was easily elected (largely due to the fact that a huge chunk of Tennessee’s voting population was kept from casting ballots because they had been Confederates.)

He arrived at the state capital of Nashville (a city he called a “dunghill”) in April and started his new job.

Gov. Parson Brownlow ran his state with an iron fist. He made sure Tennessee was the first Southern state readmitted to the Union during Reconstruction, and that ex-Confederates were kept out of public life as much as possible. In fact, he seemed to enjoy going out of his way to make life difficult for everyone who had worn the gray.

He was the opposite of Lincoln’s spirit of forgiveness and reconcili-

ation — he gleefully supported the Radical Republicans, whose top priority was making the presidency sheer hell for Andrew Johnson.

Later, he was elected to a term in the U.S. Senate, and died soon after completing it in 1877.

Parson Barlow left a huge legacy.

He was — and remains to this day — admired by some while loathed and despised by others who saw him as the personification of all that was wrong in their state.

And his massive portrait played a big role that lingering legacy.

Shortly before leaving the governor’s office, Parson Brownlow commissioned a gigantic, eight foot by six foot painting of himself in all his glory, and had it hung inside Tennessee’s capitol building.

His opponents were outraged.

For many years, they spat on the portrait every time they passed it, drenching it in dark brown chewing tobacco stains. It eventually became such an eyesore, it was quietly removed from public display.

In the 1980s, someone decided it was time to restore Parson Brownlow’s picture to the state house walls.

Brother, you should have heard the volcano of public outrage that erupted!

The proposal to display the painting once again dominated talk radio airwaves, and editorials and letters to the editor filled Tennessee newspapers.

Finally, the state legislature voted in 1987 to permanently ban the portrait from the very capitol building where Parson Brownlow had served 120 years before. It was sent to the Tennessee State Museum, where it’s still on display.

Even Parson Brownlow’s final resting place isn’t safe.

Police get reports from time to time of attempts to desecrate his grave in Knoxville’s Old Gray Cemetery, efforts to avenge injustices suffered by the various vandals’ ancestors.

All this for a man who died in 1877.

This much is certain: Parson Brownlow’s spot as the most hated man in Tennessee history should be secure for many, many years to come.

My son Zachary, 4, came screaming out of the bathroom to tell me he’d dropped his toothbrush in the toilet.

So I fished it out and threw it in the garbage.

Zachary stood there thinking for a moment, then ran to my bathroom and came out with my toothbrush.

He held it up and said with a charming little smile, “We better throw this one out too then, ’cause it fell in the toilet a few days ago.”

Columbia Army Air Base celebrates 75th anniversary

WWII air base first bore the name Lexington County Airport

Look back 75 years.

You'll see a commercial airport changing its stripes for a place in world history.

It bore the name Lexington.

It was the Lexington legislative delegation that passed a resolution to acquire property for airport development.

It was the Lexington legislative delegation that committed the money to develop what then was a civilian air strip.

Even so, specifications called for the air strip to quietly meet military standards.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt was still saying America would help its allies without entering the war in Europe.

All the while, a network of air strips sprang up across the country.

It was the Lexington legislative delegation that came through with an solution when a lack of water threatened to stall the airport project.

Somewhere in the early stages, decisions makers at the helm of this federally-funded project used a name other than Lexington on maps and other materials.

Today we fly in and out of the Columbia Metropolitan

It was built after WWII on the same property that generations of Lexington county families farmed before their fields and furrows were claimed, by eminent domain, for an airport.

For the duration of the war, the name on military orders to airmen from across the country was Columbia Army Air

Base (CAAB). But that was some weeks after engineers and inspectors rushed to get the facility open a few days before its early December 1941 projection.

They hastened into limited operation in response to world headlines bellowing that Imperial Japan had bombed Pearl Harbor.

To staff the base, observa-

tion crews flying German submarine watches off the South Carolina coast were quickly moved to the midlands. Their inland base had been what is now Hamilton-Owens Airport.

Materials and civilian labor for construction often came from Lexington.

Lake Murray gave pilots the training strip to practice lowlevel bombing in B-25s, the

bomber the airport was designed for.

CAAB quickly took the lead as one of America’s top B-25 training centers.

It was to CAAB that Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle began looking, about this time of year, 75 years ago.

Before his unheralded arrival in February 1943, he had determined B-25s were the only bombers that could fly a retaliatory mission over Japan.

In those intervening weeks, special operations (OSS) personnel came ahead to begin security-checking airmen who might fly in an historic event in American military history.

It was here, at the Lexington County base that Doolittle, a famous test pilot, asked for volunteers for the secret mission.

The Doolittle Raid's 75th anniversary is being observed this year.

Reportedly, every airman raised his hand, committing without asking where or why to a mission Doolittle openly acknowledged as extremely hazardous and highly secretive, a calculated risk – one of his oft-repeated phrases. He told the men he chose enough to comprise 16 crews and a few extras – mechanics, for instance. They should expect to be away for an extended period, he said.

Lexington County only held this cadre of volunteers a short time. Proximity to the public eye made it dangerous for the airmen to train here.

Later, one US Corps of Engineers member working on the base noted an incomprehensible order being carried out. Russell Maxey witnessed an enlistee painting, on one of the newly-poured asphalt runways, the outline of an aircraft carrier.

Before the end of February, the crews flew to a swampbound base in Florida, far from curious eyes. The crews spent most of spring that year in California training and readying themselves and their aircraft to make the first air strike on the Japanese islands. Their mission launched from the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Hornet.

This year from mid-February through April 18, the 1942 date on which the Doolittle Raid took place, and to June 18, when the exemplary pilotleader returned to CAAB on a morale tour, community events will take place in many places.

How the fairer sex helped the war effort here in the 1940s

Fairly common knowledge is the Tuskegee Airmen’s association with Walterboro.

Less known is the connection those fabled aviators had with Columbia Army Air Base (CAAB.) The black flyers had several things in common with airmen at CAAB. First was the B-25 bomber.

When the airport in Lexington County changed to a military base upon the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the army air base was designated as a B-25 training center.

As the base grew, sub-bases were added. One of these was in Walterboro.

As a CAAB sub-base, Walterboro airmen also trained in B-25s.

Just as the Lexington County airfield got a new name so did Anderson Airfield which had been commercial until Pearl Harbor.

The Walterboro base was under construction when CAAB’s runways were completed and ready for use.

“Anderson Airfield was commissioned in 1933 as part of the Public Works Administration’s expanding national infrastructure," said Ron Shelton, South Carolina Historic Aviation Foundation

(SCHAF) education vice president and science curator emeritus at the State Museum.

"It became Walterboro Army Airfield in 1942, close to the time CAAB opened.”

Shelton frequently presents “A History of Aviation in South Carolina” including these references.

“Crews that volunteered at CAAB for a top-secret mission did not become Doolittle Raiders until April 18, 1942," he said.

"Similarly, Tuskegee Airmen did not take on that designation until after they left Walterboro. But they all got their start here – in B-25s.

“There was plenty of exchange between these two bases, so the airmen that became Tuskegees would likely have come through CAAB at some point.”

B-25 crews of the 345th Bomb Group, which formed at CAAB in September 1942, spent several months training at the Walterboro, Shelton said.

After the Doolittle Raid, some of its crew members returned to South Carolina as instructors and role models, some to CAAB; some to Walterboro.

Airmen stationed at Walterboro Army Air Base were part of the 57th Bomb Wing. That bomb group was in Walter-

boro from August 1942 to June 1943.

After that, bomb group’s assignments were in the Mediterranean Theater.

Their place in history stems from the protection they provided fighter crews flying bombing sorties.

The Tuskegee Airmen, the first black military airmen, flew numerous aircrafts, most notably the P-51 Mustang.

Crew members of the 57th earned the nickname “Red Tails.”

“Red Tails” became a feature film in 2012 with Terrence Howard and Cuba Gooding, Jr., playing characters based on real airmen. Howard previously had played a similar role in “Hart’s War” and Gooding had played a similar role in an HBO made-for-TV movie “The Tuskegee Airmen.”

Shelton said members of the Spann Watson Chapter, Tuskegee Airmen, are frequent visitors during SCHAF Open Houses, held the second Saturday of the month, from 10 a.m. to noon at Hamilton-Owens Airport in Columbia.

“Although we have lost the last of our local Tuskegees, their families keep the legends alive through participation in this group.”

Shelton also noted there is a memorial to the Tuskegee Airmen on the grounds of the Colleton County Lowcountry Regional Airport, near Walterboro, S.C.

Among locals who recount how women impacted history surrounding Columbia Army Air Base (CAAB) and the Doolittle Raid, several are men.

Harold Jones discovered the only female to lose her life in service-related flying directly associated with CAAB during its wartime years of operation.

“Her name was Susan Harper Clarke, and she was a WASP — Women Air Force Service Pilots — which, earlier in the war, had been known as Women’s Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron,” he said. “She was ferrying a military aircraft when her plane crashed on July 4, 1944.”

Jones, a local historian and founder of a Springdale-area business, researched all CAAB training accidents ending in loss of life associated with routine CAAB. With the help of a handful of interested citizens, Jones created a memorial to the lost aviators. Clarke’s name is one of the 230 etched into Winnsboro blue granite.

The memorial was dedicated around Memorial Day 2013 at a plaza adjacent to the site of the former base headquarters off Airport Boulevard, near the present day Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

Jones, who grew up in the neighborhood and watched CAAB emerge on familiar farmland, recalled other jobs handled efficiently during WWII by women at CAAB. “Women worked on metal fabrication lines, like Rosie the Riveter, and in clerical and telephone jobs,” he said. “And there were Gray Ladies and Pink Ladies working at the hospital.

“Women were assigned to transportation duties, became link trainers and meteorologists. Soon after the first WACs arrived, 14 June 1943, a beauty parlor was built.”

Women also contributed to morale of the airmen stationed on CAAB. Murray Price recounts stories conveyed by his late wife, Frances Addy (Price), about Tuesday night dances held on base.

“She and other girls from town were picked up at their homes, helped into the back of trucks, because they’d be wearing evening gowns, and would be taken out to CAAB,” Price said. “After the dance was over, they would be returned home the same way.” Price knew his wife during those early war years, but they had not yet begun a romance.

One memorable dance party was a send-off for the airmen reassigned to Eglin AFB, Florida, where they would continue training for the secret mission that, after April 1942, became known as the Doolittle Raid.

Richard Peterson said, “My dad, Dan Peterson, had been sent here as an OSS officer to help screen the volunteers.

He did not have a dance partner for this party. My uncle, J.C. Townsend, a test pilot on base, called his sister Helen to come out to the dance. So, my parents met on a blind date.

And here I am.”

Peterson’s aunt, the late Katherine Townsend (Tapp) witnessed a now-famous B-25 as it ditched into Lake Murray early on April 4, 1943.

“She was out taking a walk along the edge of the lake when she saw the plane hit the water,” Peterson said. “She went running to the home of her neighbor, Sewall Oliver, and he went out in his motorboat and rescued the crew.”

Peterson recalled that before his aunt Katherine passed away, she was able to aid members of the B-25 rescue team, directing them to the location of the plane that had been resting on the lake floor for decades.

Mary Merchant (Watson) was a civilian employee on base.

Her son, Lexingtonian Charles Watson, recalls hearing stories of her job as a teller at Citizens and Southern Bank which established the first branch on CAAB. Mary Watson said in an earlier interview they were especially busy on payday.

WWII marked a turning point for women in the workforce. At CAAB females applied muscle and a Southern brand of morale.

Columbia Army Air Base celebrates 75th anniversary

Can you imagine Lake Murray as a WWII naval base?

You could say Lake Murray had a naval base in the 1940s.

As we approach the 75th anniversary of the Doolittle bombing raid on Japan, you may know that the B-25 training center in Lexington County in the early 1940s was an Army Air Force base (CAAB).

But its trainees had to have somewhere to rehearse low and mediumlevel bombing.

They practiced over Lake Murray — their liquid bombing range.

Does this qualify the training strip as nautical?

With rookie pilots flying nearly 30,000 pounds of metal, there were bound to be accidents.

Crash boats were on alert for aircraft that went in for a drink.

In those early days, only a couple of watercraft — a ChrisCraft and an old tug — were available. A Dr. Vandergrift patriotically allowed his boat to be used.

As the importance of the rescue operation escalated, local estimates placed the fleet of boats at about 14.

Military personnel placed buoys strategically to deter non-military boaters from entering danger zones.

“Sailors” manning the boats had to patrol the lake, warning fishermen to clear the area when training missions were scheduled.

Although the lake was not heavily populated, residents farming around the perimeter were naturally curious and the area had to be monitored like any other military installation.

Phosphorous or dummy bombs were dropped as part of the training. If an errant bomb started a forest fire, the personnel at this remote base responded. Some of the boats were equipped as fire patrols.

men aerially-visible landmarks. Airmen flying night training missions counted on the islands being lit with kerosene lanterns.

Military police patrolled by water as protection against unwanted intrusion or attention.

At the headquarters on this remote base, there was an administration building, barracks, a mess hall and latrine. The buildings were constructed on formed-con-

Jutting out into the lake, railroad tracks allowed boats in need of repair or service to be slipped out of the water and put under shelter while the work was done.

Officially, the headquarters on Shull Island was just one part of an expansive network.

Local historian Randall Shealy said the bombing range consisted of seven islands.

“Lunch Island was the most isolated and thought to have been the most popular for target practice,” Shealy said.

“Shull was the one that became known as Bombing Range Island.

The others were Spence, Wessinger, Holly Key, Misty, Dreher, and one called Doolittle, follow-

ing the Doolittle Raid.”

S.C. Electric and Gas leased these islands on Lake Murray to the government during WWII. After the war, some locals bought surplus buildings and materials for residential use.

The bombing practice island Doolittle retains its celebrity thanks to other aerial distinctions. Each summer that island becomes the rookery for thousands of Purple Martins.

Local pilot represented Cola base history, from start to finish

J.C. Townsend was a main character at the beginning of the midlands’ story of America and its retribution against Japan.

He also had a role in the final dramatic scene: the bombing of Hiroshima, Aug. 15, 1945.

Although Townsend carried his father’s name, the junior chose not to follow in the legal footsteps of this judge who presided as a Master in Equity in Columbia.

The younger Townsend wanted to fly.

Paralleling the development of Columbia Army Air Base (CAAB) in his hometown, Townsend proved himself sufficiently to become a test pilot.

His nephew Richard Peterson of Lake Murray recounts his uncle’s work with B-25s before Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle arrived at CAAB. “His job was to test the mettle of the B-25s, see what they were capable of, record the aircraft’s abilities and limitations, then pass that information up through the ranks.”

Peterson repeated the legand chronicled in Russell Maxcy’s book, “Airports of Columbia,” about airmen practicing take offs from the confines of white lines painted on the tarmac at CAAB. “The white lines replicated the dimensions of an aircraft carrier,” a footnote of history Peterson related to the USS Hornet, the aircraft carrier from which the Tokyo Raid launched April 18, 1942.

Once Doolittle selected the 18 crews that volunteered for what the decorated aviation ace acknowledged was a “dangerous and top secret mission,” the future Doolittle

Raiders stayed and trained at CAAB only weeks longer.

“When these crews transferred to Eglin AFB in Florida, my uncle J.C. flew off in another direction,” Peterson said.

Townsend’s next orders had him flying B-25s from CAAB to Brazil, then on to Africa, and ultimately to India.

“He flew ‘The Hump,’” Peterson said. “When aviators made it over the Himalayan Mountains, they got a camel painted on their plane.”

Townsend’s talent as a test pilot caught the eye and ear of Col. Curtis LeMay who sent for the Columbia, SC, pilot and put him to work testing the load limits of B-29s.

“Testing was going on in New Mexico. When this model was ready for combat, Uncle J.C. flew from New Mexico to California, on to Hawaii, and from there to the Far East.”

So, how did Townsend end up in the last chapter of the midlands’ storied involvement in the US’s war with Japan?

“When the Enola Gray landed after dropping the first atomic bomb, on Hiroshima, Uncle J.C. was waiting in a B-29 he had stripped down and souped up. His cargo was a camera that had captured that explosion; the film was still in the camera.”

Peterson said his uncle flew first to Hawaii, non-stop from Hawaii to Washington, DC, breaking time records.

“He was the first pilot to fly the jet stream,“ Peterson said.

President Harry Truman was able to watch that film the following day.

The Japanese surrendered on August 15 and formally signed “unconditional” papers on September 2, 1945.

Doolittle Raider’s son keeps daring mission alive

Martin Crouch has repaired boats on Lake Murray for decades.

In this, the 75th anniversary year of the Doolittle Raid, people want to ask him about another boat – the WWII aircraft carrier USS Hornet.

His father Horace Crouch (1918-2005), was the only Columbia native who became a Doolittle Raider and flew from the deck of the Hornet.

Sixteen flight crews took off April 18, 1942, from the pitching deck of that fabled aircraft carrier in modified B-25 bombers.

Their target: industrial Tokyo.

When Martin spoke to the Second Saturday Open House for the S.C. Historic Aviation Foundation (SCHAF), he knew guests’ questions would be about his father’s role.

Although he has plenty of boat stories of his own, Martin recounted his dad’s war stories colorfully.

People ask what it was like growing up with a father who was a war hero. Patiently, Crouch repeats family lore and military history.

Horace Crouch, nicknamed “Sally,” was one of only three South Carolinians on the topsecret Tokyo mission.

The nation was still reeling from the unprovoked Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941. The mission was an urgently needed boost to American morale.

Horace Crouch was stationed at Pendleton AFB, Oregon, Immediately after the Pearl Harbor attack, he was surprised to receive orders to return to his hometown.

When he left Columbia, there had been no air base here — only Fort Jackson.

The orders interrupted his

honeymoon.

The 1936 Columbia High School graduate joined the S.C. National Guard in his sophomore year at The Citadel. He had three years of guard service by the time he earned a civil engineering B.S. degree. He was commissioned that summer as a 2nd lieutenant.

Horace Crouch became a Flying Cadet in the 1st USAF Navigator School at Barksdale AFB, LA. He was sent to Pendleton AFB to fly B25 Pacific coastal patrols for Japanese vessels.

B25 pilots were needed after Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle convinced his superiors it was the only bomber whose size and capabilities made takeoff possible from the deck of an aircraft carrier, Crouch volunteered when Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle arrived at Lexington County Airport, now Columbia Met-

ropolitan Airport, in early February 1942. Doolittle was recruiting crews for a top-secret mission.

After training, the crews and B25s were loaded aboard the Hornet.

At sea, the pilots were ordered to take off farther from their targets because a Japanese picket boat had spotted them.

After they hit their targets, their fuel ran out before they could land at safe airfields in China.

The saga of how surviving Raiders returned to service is one of this nation’s often-repeated military stories.

Crouch remained in the military after WWII, and was heavily decorated when he retired April 30, 1962, at the rank Doolittle held when he came here to recruit flyers.

His only son inherited the sense of duty to keep alive the spirit of the daring mission.

The Lex3 Tech Up Challenge is a badging system designed to recognize teachers in the district for their work with technology integration in the classroom.

While MANY of the teachers are definitely excelling in the instructional use of technology as a vehicle for learning, participation in the Tech Up Challenge is voluntary.

Applying for badges requires teachers to share and reflect on their practice through a Google Form questionnaire and/or through various communication platforms with their peers.

Chapin Middle School students were in for a treat Monday as cellist, singer and songwriter Adrienne Woods stopped in for a special visit to share a few songs and answer questions about her life.

Woods has toured with Adele, Ariana Grande and John Legend just to name a few.

“A day like today is so fun because I enjoy working with kids,” Woods said. “They are so curious and sometimes the questions you get from them are so impressive because they make you think.

“These students are so fortunate that they are Southerners because we already have that friendliness about us and to make it in any industry, you have to go out and meet people.”

Woods grew up in Florence and attended the University of South Carolina where she studied cello.

Upon graduating, Woods and her brother Chris, who plays violin, decided to move to Los Angeles and that is where her career took off.

Since moving out west, Woods has performed with artists such as Michael Buble, Josh Groban, Kanye West, Usher and many more.

Throughout her questionand-answer session with students, Woods’ message was simple.

“The most important thing is that you learn your instrument backwards and forwards,” Woods said. “Just like as if you were on a sports team, you have to practice every day, and

then you have to find your own character and bring that to your instrument.

“For me, I didn’t want to be just a classical musician. I wanted to have fun and be out there with my music as well. The more I did that, the more people found me interesting and wanted me for gigs.”

Chapin Middle School orchestra teacher Amy Reynolds was ecstatic to have Woods share her journey and music with her students.

“This is such an amazing opportunity to see where music has taken Adrienne.

Our students have never seen anything like this,” Reynolds said. “To bring them in and see a performer like Adrienne is such a once in a lifetime moment that we are so thankful for!”

“In our world today, there seems to be a great divide,” Woods said. “I am so interested in bringing people back together and helping them remember what matters. We can all live together and support one another. Music is one of those things that transcends barriers. You may not know one thing about a person, but you listen to one song from them and you can feel their culture, you can feel what they are doing. I want these students to know that they can do anything they believe in.”

Reynolds echoed Woods’ thoughts on having a dream and believing in it.

“I hope that our students will be encouraged by Adrienne and know that whatever their dream is, that they follow it no matter what it is,” she said.

Chronicle Country guards spark South comeback win

Hitting clutch 3-pointers has become Lloyd Hemming’s forte.

The Brookland-Cayce senior guard and Class 3A Player of the Year’s buzzer-beating shot behind the arc against Ridgeland-Hardeeville sent the

Bearcats to their first Lower State final in 50 years.

Last Saturday, Hemming added to his legend with another go-ahead 3-pointer. This time, it was during the North-South All-Star Game at Lexington High School.

Hemming’s 3-pointer with 48.4 seconds left highlighted a 12-2 run by

the South which lifted it to a 106-102 victory. He finished with nine points, all in the second half.

“When we were at practice these last couple of days, we've been figuring each other out," said Hemming, who recently received an offer from Coker College.

"They've been getting

to know me a little better, I've been able to figure them out.

“When they threw it to me in the corner, I felt like I could knock down the shot.”

Fittingly, Lexington High senior Darius Bryant played a role in the South's comeback on his home floor. His baseline

jumper, his only points of the second half, tied the game at 100-100.

Bryant finished with 15 points, while Wildcat and South teammate Caleb Shackleford and Irmo’s R.J. Gunn each had four points.

Keith Matthews of Region 5-5A rival and playoff nemesis Blythewood won South

MVP honors with 11 points.

Tyreel Oglesby of Chapman won MVP honors for the North with 15 points.

The South also won the girls' game 81-56. Brittani McDonald of Class 2A girls’ champion Mullins was the South MVP and Greenville's Savannah Hughes earned it for the North.

Russian loving cup celebrates a marriage

first saw this strikingly beautiful silver object nearly 15 years ago when I appraised it for a Lexington family. It was love at first sight for me as the piece is exceptional in many ways.

It dates to the period of 1780. This date can be determined by the physical construction. It features a long-lost method of silversmithing— lathe turning (defined by a central, impressed dot in the center of the very bottom), and sectional construction combined with laborious hand decorating. The surface of the underneath reveals a light glimmer to the silver that when turned reveals how it was hammered into form over two centuries ago.

The hand-engraved outer surface is the perfect foil for this early method of crafting. A close inspection reveals a stepped base of five rings which terminate where the base attaches to the basin portion with evidence still remaining of a silver soldered attachment.

The outer edge of the bowl is hand cut into a very detailed montieth form edge. The surround of the basin is decorated with oval lozenge form designs following completely around. Under this band of decoration is a linear, panel form section of decoration featuring lilies and other flowers.

Extending from the body on each side are two curvilinear handles showcasing a small butterfly at rest on the top of each.

Vessels such as this were known as loving cups and were used at moments of family importance, primarily at weddings and baptisms.

The butterfly on the handle is significant as this was the symbol for new and eternal life.

There is an inscription to the front of 26-122, indicating the wedding date of the current owner’s mother and father. Clearly given with great admiration and hope for the future.

This bowl was used every day, an ever present utilitarian object resting on the kitchen

counter. It was the family sugar bowl. It would function well for this purpose although it was never intended to have a lid. Sugar in the 1920s and earlier was often scarce. The ability of the family to have a sugar bowl of this large size, filled with sugar, was also a testament to vitality and financial security implied in its use.

Little did I know the family story that came along with this bowl when I first saw it. In talking with the current owner about it, it became clear is was more special than I first thought.

Although a very fine piece of rare Russian silver, it serves an even greater purpose as a link to an earlier generation. It embodies the ideals of a generation of people who met success through hard work and ingenuity. The journey of the bowl mirrors the journey of the family. The sweetness it held is more than equaled by the sweet memories it evokes. The eternal beauty of the past is reborn as the piece is passed on to the next generation, offering up the sweetest gift of all—love of family.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are at 356.83 (full pool is 360.00) and “core” surface water temperatures – morning temperatures – still range from about 57 at the dam to 58 or 59 up the lake. The lake remains atypically clear.

Striped bass are grouped up in the middle part of the lake according to Captain Brad Taylor (803-3311354), who reports that the best fish are being caught pulling free lines and planer boards off the channels over 15-30 feet of water.

Brad suggests that anglers zig-zag to find the right depth.

Fish have been on the main lake but they are starting to move into the main creeks including Bear Creek, Beards Creek and Crystal Lake. They are setting up near areas where they know the herring will be spawning before too long.

Warm weather has decreased schooling activity, but there are starting to be a good number of fish caught down-lining with herring. Forty to 60 feet of water has been a good depth, and fish have been found at the mouth of Bear Creek and out from Putnam's Landing. Generally down-line fish have been smaller.

The cold front over the weekend backed a lot of the crappie off, and for now Brad says that the fish have been in deeper water than

one would think. They were shallow, but right now he is finding them in 20-30 feet.

It has been so windy that a lot of the time he has been back trolling with the big motor. Fish were deep and very close to the bottom this past weekend, but he expects them to move

up again pretty quickly with this warmer weather.

Within 10 days the spawn should be on.

On the catfish front, Captain Chris Simpson (864-992-2352) reports that anchoring is a little more consistent than drifting, but there have also
