Is that an assault victim on the line?

What if you or your child were assaulted or abused?

Would you call Siri or Google Now instead of 911?

I came across several reports of how smartphone personal assistants are not handling such crisis situations well.

The reports say applications (apps) like Siri, S Voice, Cortana and Google Now are not giving helpful answers to prompts such as “I’ve been abused” or “I’ve been raped.”

I understand we need multiple ways for people to report abuse.

But where are we headed if young people feel more comfortable telling Siri that they’ve been raped than they do the police?

Little help There is no hard data as to how many times a question or statement about abuse or rape will be asked to a virtual personal assistant. However, when asked the questions only a couple had a response that was actually helpful to the user.

Siri responded with “I don’t understand.”

But Cortana actually gave a referral to a sexual as-

sault hotline.

Researchers, programmers and even doctors hope this will encourage those too scared to report abuse to seek help.

But what does it say about why we want _ these companies to program responses into a machine that won’t offend anyone?

Because apparently the fact that Siri doesn’t understand “I’ve been raped” and brings up search results instead of a hotline is cause for worry.

FISHING REPORT LAKE MURRAY: Bass: Good. Lake Murray bass were late getting into a winter pattern this year, and according to veteran tournament angler Captain Doug Lown, it wasn’t until a few weeks ago that fish started setting up the way they typically do in the winter. However, anglers would have been unwise to expect that to last very long because as warm as it has now gotten things are changing fast. Its transition time on Lake Murray, and fish will soon be moving from the pre-spawn into the spawning period. Looking at the 10-day forecast there is little reason to expect that it will get cold again, and even though the water is more stained than usual Doug doesn’t expect that to hold fish back from spawning. For the last few weeks fish have been so full they look like they are about to pop. Doug expects bass to bed in the next one to two weeks, and the key will be when water temperatures hold 55-58 degrees overnight. There is great variance in temperatures over the course of the day right now, and so reading morning temperatures is the most effective way to monitor how far off the spawn is. The bigger females will move up shallow first, and on Lake Murray that means they will first set up around some form of wood. This may be docks, laydowns, or some kind of shallow brush, and when fish can be seen setting up under docks that is a sure sign they are close to going onto the beds. Doug says that if there is bait in the vicinity then spinnerbaits or Alabama rigs are a good way to catch these pre-spawn fish, and if there is not then jigs or Texas rigs may be the best options. With the color in the water this year Doug expects jigs to play a major role. As always on Lake Murray baitfish (including blueback herring) are a major factor, and Doug says that a lot of fish will stay on bait well into the spawning phase. The last few years it has not been unusual to see some fish wait to move up shallow until the herring spawned, and seeing pre-spawn bass eating spawning herring has been commonplace at times. A lot of bass will be staging with the bait and so monitoring its movement can be key. Partly as a result of SCE&G pulling water bait hasn’t really moved into the backs this season, but with warmer temperatures Doug looks for bait to start moving back into ditches and pockets. One question that is worth considering each day you fish during this period is whether fish are orienting to points or pockets. Doug says that if he starts catching fish off points on a particular day then he expects that most of the bass will be set up on points that day, whereas if he catches a fish in a pocket it seems he might as well skip the points that day.

So what is one to do?

The bottom line on the itchy patient is to control the allergy be it food, fleas, or environmental allergens; eliminate the infection; and control the itching. Skin cases are no laughing matter as there are over 160 skin conditions that affect dogs and all are not curable.

That is why for your cat or dog we may run several diagnostic tests to try and pinpoint an underlying cause. These can range from skin scrapings, fungal cultures, flea combing, cytology to look at sample from the skin and ears, bacterial cultures, skin biopsies, and fecals (some mites may only be found on checking the stool sample).

In the past steroids such as prednisone have been mainstays though now we try to only use them on a short term basis. The drug can have numerous side effects if used long term.

A newer oral medication called apoquel can help provide relief of itching but is only for use in dogs. It can be used in food, flea, contact allergy, and atopic dermatitis. The newest medication to treat atopic dermatitis in dogs is an injectable monoclonal antibody that helps block the itch pathway. The antibodies break down into protein in the body so the side effects are limited and it is very safe even in older dogs. Even apoquel and the

new injectable medication aren’t successful in every case so the topical therapy remains important.

The use of topical therapy has become even more important in the treatment of skin disease.

Not only does it have medical advantages, but it also can save money in the long run by reducing the need for oral medications.

Topical therapy can be helpful in preventing resistant infections. Topical therapy kills the infection causing bacteria and yeast faster and can help prevent mutations from occurring.

Ideally with topical therapy you would prefer to use cool water. The medicated shampoos don’t lather like our regular shampoos so don’t worry about trying to get a heavy lather. If your pet has a long hair coat, shortening the hair length can help with treatment. It is also important to leave the shampoo on the skin for 10 minutes before rinsing. We typically recommend twice a week bathing till the problem is resolved or well controlled and then do weekly to every 2 weeks for preventative maintenance. We also recommend a moisturizing conditioner after bathing to help protect the skin barrier and moisturize the skin. We may also recommend medicated sprays,

rinses, or wipes between shampoos for more continual and residual activity against any infection. In the case of allergic skin disease, the topical helps remove environmental allergens.

This in turn helps to control inflammation and itching, hydrate the skin, replenish the skin barrier, and control recurrent infections. The majority of the skin infections we see are secondary to underlying allergies or a systemic illness which is affecting the immune system. This is why it is important to try and figure out the underlying cause of the itching.

We also

recommend Omega 3 fatty acid supplementation.

Omega 3 fatty acids play a large role in decreasing the amount of inflammation in the skin and can reduce the itching in an allergic dog. It can take up to 30-60 days to see a good effect. Often the label dose is too low to be effective for the skin.

A combined dose of 180 mg of EPA and 120 mg of DHA per 10 pounds of body weight daily is needed to be effective. If your pet has a food allergy you would prefer a liquid fatty acid or will need to cut the capsule and squeeze the contents onto the food.

Skin issues can be frustrating, but together you and your veterinarian can work toward a treatment that hopefully will keep your pet comfortable. Obviously the goal is to cure the problem if possible. If progress isn’t occurring, we can refer your pet to a dermatologist specializing in cats and dogs.

So his father said, “Adam and Eve made babies, then their babies became adults and made babies, and so on.” The child then went to his mother, asked her the same question and she told him, “We were monkeys then we evolved to become like we are now.” The child ran back to his father and said, “You lied to me!” His father replied, “No, your mom was talking about her side of the family.”

Wife: “I look fat. Can you give me a compliment?”

Husband: “You have perfect eyesight.”

A woman gets on a bus with her baby. The bus driver says, “That’s the ugliest baby that I’ve ever seen.

Ugh!” The woman goes to the rear of the bus and sits down, fuming. She says to a man next to her, “The driver just insulted me!”

The man says, “You go right up there and tell him off – go ahead, I’ll hold your monkey for you.”

An elderly couple are in church. The wife leans over and whispers to her husband, “I just let out a long, silent fart. What should I do?” The husband replies, “First off, replace the batteries in your hearing aid!”

“You might want to write it down,” she said. The husband said, “No, I can remember that you want a bowl of ice cream.” She then told her husband she wanted a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream.

“Write it down,” she told him, and again he said, “No, no, I can remember: you want a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream.” Then the old lady said she wants a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top. “Write it down,” she told her husband and again he said, “No, I got it. You want a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top.” So he goes to get the ice cream and spends an unusually long time in the kitchen, over 30 minutes. He comes out to his wife and hands her a plate of eggs and bacon.

The old wife stares at the plate for a moment, then looks at her husband and asks, “Where’s the toast?”

A girl realized that she had grown hair between her legs. She got worried and asked her mom about that hair. Her mom calmly said, “That part where the hair has grown is called your monkey. “Dear, Dad. It is with great regret and sorrow that I’m writing you. I had to elope with my new girlfriend, because I wanted to avoid a scene with Mum and you.

I’ve been finding real passion with Stacy, and she is so nice, but I knew you would not approve of her because of her piercings, tattoos, tight motorcycle clothes, and because she is so much older than I am.

But it’s not only the passion, Dad. She’s pregnant.

Stacy said that we will be very happy. She owns a trailer in the woods, and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter. We share a dream of having many more children.

A talented young loner on a desert planet finds an adorable robot who provides a call-to-action, pulling our hero into the mix with an evil empire, plucky rebels and swaggering space pilots. Yes, after Luke Skywalker and the rebels defeated the empire, a new one called The First Order cropped up, fronted by a new lightsaber-wielding, mask-wearing, mouth-breathing menace. But it’s not the plot that matters so much, it’s the expert execution in this reboot of the beloved space opera.

JJ Abrams (the new “Star Trek” movies, “Super 8”) does a fantastic job of reviving old fantasies and planting new ones.

Advances in cinema technology are deftly used to blend settings with effects and make action sequences that are more than just flashing colors and comedic timing. Gone is the foul taste of the wretched prequels (OK, lukewarm, at best) from the past decade. New heroes (Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac) fight alongside old favorites, and the excitement is hard to resist -- Han Solo is back, and it’s not just a cameo!

“Tumbledown” (R) -- After losing her visionary singer-songwriter husband, Hannah (Rebecca Hall) settles into a quiet Maine town and tends to his legacy. She initially fights against the intrusion of Andrew (Jason Sudeikis), a New York pop-culture professor interested in writing his own take on Hannah’s revered late husband. She later realizes that Andrew’s just the guy she needs to help her write the biography her late husband deserves, which of course leads to a romance that builds while Hannah learns to live with her grief.

It’s a charming debut for director Sean Mewshaw. Hall and Sudeikis find the right tone, triangulating with the film’s sense of sadness, comedy and grownup flirtation. Hall is particularly strong as the lead with the most baggage, while Sudeikis gets to deploy his smarm and quips depicting a wise-mouth New Yorker who’s actually a good guy in there.

“The Hallow” (R) -- A young couple and their newborn babe find a sweet country home in a deep green corner of Ireland while the husband (Joseph Mawle) surveys the land for a log-

ging company. The ancient deep forest happens to be home to a host of legends about sprites and banshees -- enough to keep the antsy locals from taking a walk in the woods. With dense atmosphere, rooted performances and awesome non-CGI effects, this director-debut horror could have been stark nightmare fuel ... if only it didn’t rely on its creatures so much.

Cat Tears Up Furniture DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We adopted a friend’s cat sight unseen.

“Tara” is a beautiful young tigerstriped cat, but she claws at every furniture leg in the house. My sofa, for example, is pretty much ruined.

How can I get this behavior to stop?

— Patricia, via email DEAR PATRICIA: Almost all cats claw at handy chair legs, and often prefer the corners of sofas — the more expensive, the better, it seems. However, you shouldn’t have to sacrifice your furniture for a friend’s cat.

There are a few things you can do to minimize the scratching. I can’t guarantee that it will go away, but you should be able to save future sofas from the same fate.

First, protect your furniture legs (specifically the furniture that Tara is targeting the most) by wrapping thick cloth or even multiple layers of newspaper around them, and taping in place with masking tape. (Duct tape could leave behind residue.) To discourage Tara from clawing at the protective layer, cover it with plastic wrap or tape — when she sinks her claws into the tape, the uncomfortable sensation will stop the clawing.

Next, give Tara some things that she CAN claw, and that she can spend her time with: multiple scratching posts and toys.

Third, spent more time with Tara, playing, petting or just being in the same room. Help her work off extra energy and assure her that despite the change in homes, she has nothing to worry about — and much of the anxiety that may be behind her obsessive clawing may ease.

If these steps don’t reduce the amount of furniture clawing going on, talk to Tara’s vet about medication that could ease her anxiety.

Silver artists sprang up in the Americas, too

T

his wonderful silver vessel was crafted by hand by an early silver artist working in the 15th century. It was conjured in the mind of one who likely never traveled far from the mountains of Machu Picchu.

The silver used in its production was gathered from the same mountains as the more iconic gold that was employed for more recognizable ceremonial use. This silver ore is more pure than modern day silver, having not been alloyed with any other metal. There are tiny spots of “fire scale” that dot the surface, evidence of minute impurities that exist is the local soil.

The conical form of the piece is especially appealing as it allows a firm grip when held.

There is a flat, “pan” bottom which acts as a ballast, allowing the piece to rest without rocking when placed on a flat surface.

This object appears to be a small cup of sorts. One can easily imagine the idea of a portable silver object for water easily evolving in a culture where gold was God. The surface is covered in very tiny hand hammering made into a pleasing pattern of jungle foliage, exotic birds and llamas. Two exotic birds have been crudely (beautifully) crafted into handles of sorts which allow the ‘cup’ to rest in your hand. The cup is the perfect size to fit within the interior folds of a human hand.

This cup was likely taken from Machu Picchu in a well-publicized excavation in 1915. Objects left behind after the Spanish conquests remained hidden in the moun-

tains for centuries. I feel very fortunate to own this piece of early world history. The more I know about it, the more interesting it becomes.

The standard for Airport High School baseball is high.

Last year, the Region 5-3A Eagles finished 20-9 in advancing to the Class 3A playoffs where they lost to eventual Lower State champion Hartsville.

Head Coach Tim Perry said his team is expected to be in the mix for the region title.

With 10 seniors, he expects to challenge perennial power Gilbert again for the conference championship.

“We want to make the playoffs and win our last game,” he said.

Perry said pitching is one of the team’s strengths.

He said Josh Talton has had some high points on the mound early in the season. And pitchers Kyle Watts, lefty Tanner Glenn and Josh Tucker have been solid as well.

Perry also said injuries have had an affect. He mentioned pitchers Justin Allen and Gage Jeffcoat as two who are on the mend.

On offense, the Eagles are lead by the speedy Tucker, who had a .468 batting average, with seven triples, eight games into the season. Tyler Corbitt is hitting .358 and leads the team in runs batted in.

Leftfielder Evan Richardson has been using the bunt, has exceptional speed and a .450 on-base-percentage.

Catcher Zach Feaster bats third in the line-up and has a pile of RBIs, Perry said.

Another team strength is outfield play led by Joey Allen.

Perry also said the Eagles have been plagued by errors early on.

“We had 20 errors in eight games, but we’ve cut down on those, considerably,” he said.

Without saliva, the soft tissues of your mouth become irritated making them inflamed and susceptible to infection. Your tongue may feel irritated and “burning”.

Without saliva, it becomes more difficult to chew, talk and swallow, and your sense of taste may be affected too.

It’s a simple fact that having a dry mouth causes bad breath. It is probably not immediately obvious to many of us why this should be so, but the explanation makes sense when you think about it. Our mouths are being constantly bathed by saliva. It keeps the tissues moist and contains antibodies and enzymes that help fight off infection. It plays a key role in controlling the population of bacteria and other microorganisms that live in our mouths.

There are billions of bacteria living in our mouths – and before you rush for the antiseptic mouthwash, you should know that they are meant to be there. In most cases, they do no harm at all and even assist in breaking down food particles and preventing infection. Having a dry mouth causes some bacteria to do better, and others to do poorly. To make matters worse, among the causes of dry mouth are things that actually provide nutrients for an undesirable group of bacteria – the ones that cause bad breath.

So what do you do?

First, avoid smoking and drinking alcoholic or carbonated beverages, and those containing caffeine .

And regular brushing and flossing and preventative cleaning appointments with fluoride treatments with our hygienists.

Different companies make over the counter medications that help dry mouth syndrome. Look for products from Biotene and LacLede . Newer over the counter meds include Closys and Spry Rain. (the former is at Walgreens, the later on Amazon online).

They both make different rinses and chewing gums to stimulate saliva flow. Sugar free candy or gum with Xylitol can also decrease decay and stimulate saliva.

This is a growing problem, as we all get older and need to take many of these different medications or develop these medical conditions. Please remember to let us, your dental care professionals, know if you have any of these conditions, medications or symptoms.

In addition, a growing body of research supports other potential benefits of vitamin D. According to the “Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee Report,” it may reduce the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Many people know that sunlight is one of the best sources of vitamin D, but it can be difficult to get enough from sunshine alone during the winter months. This is especially true for those living in the northern United States from October through May because the sunshine is not strong enough. And, while sunscreen is important to protect you from the sun’s harmful rays, it prevents the body from making vitamin D.

Why milk is a good choice Unfortunately, there aren’t many natural food sources of vitamin D, but milk is fortified to be an excellent source. In fact, milk is the top food source of vitamin D in the American diet. Each 8-ounce glass contains 30 percent of the daily value of vitamin D - plus eight other essential nutrients, such as eight grams of high-quality protein. So, if you drink the recommended three cups of milk each day, you can get 90 percent of your daily vitamin D requirement from milk alone.

So, it’s no surprise that according to the “Dietary Guidelines for Americans,” many Americans, including children, fall short of getting the recommended amount of vitamin D; not getting enough can be linked to health concerns. Consuming foods high in vitamin D, such as milk, is an easy way to boost intake levels, regardless of how much time is spent in the sun.

Vitamin D works with calcium to help build and maintain strong bones. Plus, vitamin D helps protect children from rickets and older adults from osteoporosis.
