Did I go over your head last week?

One reader thought so.

Let me back up and start from the beginning. Your computer / phone / tablet / etc is made up of hardware andsoftware. Hardware are the pieces you can touch. Software are the programs that make all those little hardware pieces work together.

Malware (Malicious Software) is nothing more than a program that someone wrote that can have a range of functions. The function of the malware determines what we call it.

Why do they write these programs? Money and just because they can are the biggest answers.

On to the terminology.

Just for clarification malware can fit into one or more of the following terms.

A virus is any program that is hidden in another

When you download this program from the internet and go to install it, it alsoinstalls a virus. You probably will never even know it until your computer starts to run slow.

A trojan is just what it sounds like, it is a piece of software that is disguised as something else just to get you to click accept on the installation. For example, remember that program to help you alter pictures? Well this time, it will ask if you’d like to install this great search tool also.

Except, that instead of a search tool, you get malicious software installed and you agreed to it.

Sometimes it will be something worse like a keylogger that can see every time you type.

This is when your bank records are accessed. The keylogger will log as you type in the website (or click on the website link) and then as you type in your username and password.

Adware is ads. Yep, that simple. People write programs to make ads pop up

A rootkit is what helps the malware stay hidden and stay on your computer even through a virus scanner. It installs itself in the most basic functions of your computer. That way when the virus scanner detects it and removes it, this little nasty bugger can re­ install itself the next time you reboot.

A worm is a program that can replicate itself in order to spread to other computers and does not need to piggyback on another program. A computer with a worm can infect all other computers that are on the same network simply by being on that network together.

Spyware is, as it sounds, used to spy on you. These programs are designed to watch what you do and send it back to who owns

on your screen. Each time you accidentally click an ad, the program owners get money from theperson who’s ad you clicked on.

These are the big names when it comes to malware.

At some point if you have acomputer these words have been banded about by a repair person. Hopefully now, you have a bit more of an understanding as to what they were talking about and why it can be a big deal.

FISHING REPORT Lake Murray: Crappie: Fair. Lake World reports that all the best crappie fishing is on the upper end of the lake, chiefly around grass beds and brush piles in 12-20 feet of water.

Largemouth bass: Hit-or-miss. Veteran tournament angler Captain Doug Lown reports that fishing is erratic right now, with some monster bass and big 23- plus pound bags weighed in recent tournaments, but a lot of very good fishermen also struggling to put fish in the boat. For some time now the predominant pattern has been throwing an Alabama rig and a crankbait first thing in the morning when bait has pulled up shallower, but it appears that this shallow bait bite is declining now. More fish are starting to be caught around mid-depth docks on jigs and shakey head worms, and there is also a strong deep bite in about 25-30 feet of water. Expect predicted cold weather to hurt the shallow bite more than the deep bite.

Second Wife When our second child was on the way, my wife and I attended a pre-birth class aimed at couples who had already had at least one child. The instructor raised the issue of breaking the news to the older child.

It went like this: “Some parents,” she said, “tell the older child, ’We love you so much we decided to bring another child into this family.’ But think about that. Ladies, what if your husband came home one day and said, ’Honey, I love you so much I decided to bring home another wife.’”

Pneumonia A man went to see his doctor because he was suffering from a miserable cold. His doctor prescribed some pills, but they didn’t help.

On his next visit the doctor gave him a shot, but that didn’t do any good, either.

On his third visit the doctor told the man to go home and take a hot bath.

Bovine Compensation A motorist driving by a ranch hit and killed a calf that was crossing the road. The driver went to the owner of the calf and explained what had happened. He then asked what the animal was worth.

“Oh, about $200 today,” said the rancher. “But in six years it would have been worth $900. So $900 is what I’m out.”

The motorist sat down and wrote out a check and handed it to the farmer.

“Here,” he said, “is the check for $900. It’s postdated six years from now.”

What it’s like on top of Old Windy

Climbers brave the south slope of Mount Washington in the dead of winter.

MacLeod and Jerry Bellune are spending their children’s inheritance and enjoying every minute of it. What follows is an account of their travels in New England.

Mount Washington, N.H. Lets imagine for a minute that you had the nerve to climb snow-covered Mount Washington’s rugged slopes in frigid February weather.

Can you imagine what it would be like up there?

Cold, you say. You bet.

The temperature would be a balmy 10º above zero.

The wind would be just barely gale force at 40 mph.

But the wind chill factor would be 12º below zero.

And the humidity would be a crisp 33%.

But the view?

Ah, the view would be 90 miles on a clear day.

You might not be able to see South Carolina from there.

But you might just glimpse the Atlantic Ocean.

I must confess we aren’t brave enough to best the worst that winter on Mount

Washington has to offer.

We drove up its rugged slopes and near vertical Auto Road in June last year.

But the wind felt like gale force and it was cold.

The home of the gods Mount Washington is the highest peak in the Northeast at 6,288 feet above sea level.

It is famous for dangerously erratic weather.

Its weather observatory at the top held the record for the highest wind gust directly measured at the earth’s surface, 231 miles per hour on April 12, 1934.

Before Europeans arrived, Native Americans called the mountain Agiocochook, or “Home of the Great Spirit.”

Nearly all of it is in the White Mountain National Forest. But 59 acres surrounding and including the summit is in Mount Washington State Park.

The first European to mention the mountain was Giovanni da Verrazzano, the Italian navigator whose family owns the vineyards and

winery at Grave we visited in Tuscany and wrote about 10 years ago. He saw it only from his ship off the Atlantic coast in 1524.

The Abenaki people dared not climb the mountains out of fear because they believed their gods lived on the tops of them.

First up the mountain Explorer Darby Field claimed to have made the first ascent of Mt. Washington in June of 1642.

He climbed it to show the Abenaki chief Passaconaway that the Europeans bargaining for tribal land were not subject to their gods.

It was a climb calculated to allow European settlers to expand westward.

Field later climbed Agiocochook in October 1642 as part of a survey to map the land as far as Maine.

A geology party, headed by Manasseh Cutler, named the mountain in 1784 to honor our first President and Father of Our Country.

The Crawford Path is the oldest mountain hiking trail in the country, laid out in 1819 as a bridle path and has been in use ever since.

Ethan Allen Crawford built a house on the top in 1821 but a storm destroyed it in 1826. It was not until the mid19th century that the mountain was developed into one of the first tourist destinations in the nation with more bridle paths and two hotels.

A stone Summit House hotel opened in 1852 anchored by four heavy chains over its roof as protection against high

winds. . In 1853, a competitor, the Tip-Top House was built and the Summit House was rebuilt of wood with 91 rooms in 1872–1873.

The Summit House burned in 1908 and was rebuilt in stone in 1915.

Mountain newspaper For 40 years, Henry Burt published a daily newspaper called Among the Clouds on the summit each summer until 1917.

Copies were circulated on the Cog Railway and by coach to surrounding hotels and res-

taurants.

The Tip-Top House today is a state historic site.

The original shingle-clad building has been chained to the ground lest the wind take it with it.

Other Victorian era attractions included a coach road built in 1861, now the Mount Washington Auto Road which we used on our ascent to the summit.

The Mount Washington Cog Railway built in 1869 is still operating to take you to the summit.

West Columbia native puts on his boxing gloves

By Terry Ward Lexchront@yahoo.com State Treasurer Curtis Loftis may be the state's most popular political official.

He attributes that to his success in reforming how state tax money is spent.

The West Columbia native was elected in 2010. He was the first to ever defeat an incumbent, Converse Chellis, in a statewide primary.

Loftis was unopposed and reelected in 2014 with almost 99% of the vote.

Loftis lives not far from Westover Acres where he grew up. He went to Saluda River Elementary School and Northside Middle. He is a graduate of BrooklandCayce High School and the University of South Carolina.

Loftis traveled a lot in his youth. He spent time in England and was fascinated with the maneuvering and operation of the British Parliament.

As a business man, Loftis has a long and successful run as owner of Home Pest Control.

But the terms in the Treasurer's office for Loftis have been anything but a lovefest. He campaigned on a theme of “transparency and accountability.” And Loftis is credited with following through.

But it has been “bloody,” Loftis said. Specifically, he was speaking of his effort to reform policy related to the state's approximately $30 billion retirement fund.

“When it gets bloody, everybody bleeds,” Loftis said.

In 2013, Loftis charged that the SC Retirement Systems Investment Commission (RSIC) was paying more than $300 million a year to Wall Street, but getting low returns on investments.

Loftis said the state was paying top-tier fees, but the pension fund was at the bottom in performance.

He also said the RSIC staff pulled in large salaries with big bonuses despite underperforming returns.

The RSIC Board responded by accusing Loftis of bullying. Loftis called the bullying charge “a stunt and a personal attack.”

As a result of his stand, Loftis has been profiled in the New York Times, Bloomberg business news and many other financial publications. There is even a chapter in the college textbook, “Asset Management”

While the fight was messy, it had a purpose.

“There have been over 100 important changes” made at the RSIC, Loftis said.

He said there should have always been internal audits at the RSIC. “Now they have them,” Loftis said. “I'm pleased with the outcome.”

Voters have supported Loftis' willingness to fight.

He had no opponent in the last election. Potential candidates, Democrat or Republican, chose to leave the Treasurer's race alone.

Others have portended a run for governor for Loftis, but he discounts the talk.

sues - that a gubernatorial candidate must address are not what motivates him as Treasurer.

Loftis also said the fight he is in now is personally laborious.

He said he spends overtime and weekends studying contracts and looking over policies because the flaws that unfairly cost taxpayers are often hidden -purposely - in the details.

Loftis likes to hunt, hike, camp, and work on his property on the banks of the Saluda River. But he has not made time for much outside the office lately.

“I don't have time to exercise and I've gained weight,” said Loftis. “I've had to buy

new clothes twice.”

While Loftis expresses satisfaction with the the reforms being made at the RSIC, there is more to do.

The General Assembly is considering a $48 billion proposal to upgrade the state's crumbling roads. The 30-year plan, supported

by Gov. Nikki Haley, would raise gas taxes.

Loftis opposes the plan.

He said it invites abuse and waste. He said consultants, lobbyists and fees paid for other bureaucratic services that do not include infrastructure construction are prevalent.

“I believe in planning,” Loftis said at a Statehouse rally last week. “But I also

believe that an extra commitment of $48 billion tax dollars to a 30-year infrastructure wish list may cause funding crises in the basic functions of government such as education, health care, and security.

"The tax is real. The rest is a promise.”

He called the gas tax a “boondoggle.”It is a pig in a poke. It is a dog that won’t hunt, and no matter how much lipstick you put on that pig, it’s still gonna be a pig.”

Loftis is putting on his boxing gloves. And if the past is any indicator, it could get messy.
