More than $9,000 in $20 bills was recovered.

The Secret Service said a group of hackers that could be tied to international criminal syndicates has pilfered more than $1 million in the U.S. so far.

The Secret Service said ATMs running on Windows XP, but some recent attacks included machines running Windows 7.

One person, usually dressed as an ATM technician, will physically access the ATM, hook up a computer, take it over, and leave.

A second person will come by for up to an hour as $20 bills spit out.

Anyone with information is asked to call the LPD at 358-1414.

Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels have steadily risen to 356.96 (full pool is 360.00). Morning water temperatures are in the lower 50s over much of the lake, but it’s not unusual to see temperatures push into the mid-50s on warm days.

The mud at the top of the lake has mostly settled out and so even in the rivers there is 1.5-2 feet visibility. The rest of the lake is clearer.

As one would expect with rising temperatures at this time of year, veteran tournament angler Captain Doug Lown reports that bass are starting to move up.

While it’s been warm the sun hasn’t been out very much, but with sunny conditions things will accelerate.

Two weeks ago water temperatures were ap-

proximately 47 degrees, and so there has been a pretty significant change pretty fast.

Fish are just starting to stage on secondary points and rocky places, and generally getting out of the suspended deal and more onto the bottom.

Basically, they’re getting out of winter patterns and starting to act like they should in mid-February, moving towards the bank and getting pretty near their spawning areas.

At the end of February last year, fish were already spawning, but water temperatures got lower this winter.

Doug does not expect fish to be spawning on the first full moon in March, but if temperatures stay as warm as projected it’s not impossible.

When morning surface temperatures hit 55-57 degrees there will be some fish trying to spawn in clear, protected areas – and often they will be bigger fish.

For now, there is still a crankbait bite the first couple of hours of the day that is generally over by 10 a.m., and then on sunny days, you need to look around shady banks or under docks.

Shakey heads are still working pretty well and you can also fish an Alabama rig around docks.

On the striped bass front, Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that some fish did move down the lake towards Dreher Island escaping the mud line, but overall the

dirty water settled out very quickly and the river has now cleared up well.

They are back to catching lots of fish on bucktail/ ice fly double rigs, and this morning he saw birds and striper working schools of bait. The Big Saluda has cleared up a little better than the Little Saluda.

While water temperatures are still in the low 50s, once we get some sun Brad expects the pattern to begin to change pretty quickly.

On the crappie front, Captain Brad reports that the pattern is still the same but the fishing has just gotten a lot better.

There have been some very nice catches in the rivers. Most of the crappie are still in 10-12 feet of water or less, and they are getting shallower. Tight-lining minnows and jigs is still the best pattern.

Irmo boys’ basketball dream ends with loss in state title game

Irmo High School’s 10th state title appearance under Tim Whipple may have been it’s most surprising.

The Yellow Jackets were 2-5 and lanquishing near the bottom of Region 5-5A around mid-January.

After 10 consecutive wins, including an improbable last-second win over defending Class 5A Lower State champion Blythewood, Irmo was back in the hunt for its sixth state championship.

Standing in the way, however, was last year’s defending champion Dorman High School led by a familiar face in head coach Thomas Ryan.

The former Lexington High School guard was winless as a player against Whipple, but considered him as much a mentor as Wildcats’ head coach Bailey Harris.

At the final buzzer, it was Harris handing Ryan a commemorative game ball after the Cavaliers defeated the Yellow Jackets 44-33 this past Friday at Colonial Life Arena.

The contest saw both teams held to their seasonlow in points, but saw Dorman outscore Irmo 29-14 in the second half to pull away for the victory.

Ironically, Dorman held Irmo to its previous seasonlow of 37 points in a victory last November.

The Yellow Jackets led 19-15 at halftime.

Senior center Winston Hill led an inspired effort, finishing with 13 points and leading a defensive effort which held the Cavaliers to 33.3 percent in the first half.

The third quarter was the turning point as Dorman sophomore Myles Tate took over the contest.

He sparked a 13-1 run to end the third quarter with 2, 3-pointers.

The latter on a crossover dribble sent the Cavaliers’ cheering section into delirium.

Dorman outscored Irmo 20-8 to take control of the game.

Irmo was unable to overcome 18 turnovers and

1-13 shooting from 3-point range.

“It wasn’t about the game,” Whipple said. “It was about the journey to get here. It was absolutely incredible. I’m really proud

of the guys.

“I know you say that a lot, but nobody who saw us play in January that thought we had a prayer of being able to get here. So the guys just stayed focus

and worked hard and I think it’s an example of what happens if you do things the right way.

“So maybe it’s an inspiration to other people and other teams.”

National Guard trains for whatever comes their way This is the first in a series of articles about what our state National Guard is doing to prepare for emergencies here and overseas.

S.C. Army National Guard soldiers from across the state are training to become Army Pathfinders.

This is the first year the course has been held in South Carolina to certify National Guard soldiers at McCrady Training Center in Eastover.

The Pathfinders Mobile Training Team runs the 15day course from the Warrior Training Center at Fort Benning, GA. “The course provides students with the skills to set up drop zones for aerial re-supply which has real-world applications,” said Sgt. 1st Class Michael Hardgrove, a mobile training team instructor.

“National Guard soldiers may have to coordinate air-drops of food, water, and fuel on active duty missions.”

Soldiers are pushed to mental exhaustion and often study late into the night.

“Students have to memorize the nomenclatures for military equipment and use mathematical formulas for time and distance planning. This is one of the most academically challenging courses in the Army,” Hardgrove said.

The final test is the Field Training Exercise where soldiers set up forward operating bases in teams and are given missions that require them to apply all the skills they have learned.

“I have never had to do that before anywhere else,” said Viteri. “I was not expecting to do trigonometry in Army training. If you come to the Pathfinder course, be prepared academically and be prepared to stay up late studying and put in the work.”

Twenty soldiers graduated from the rigorous course last month. Graduates were presented with Pathfinder wings.

Granddad’s cow-charming ’65 Chevy, Part One A local ambassador to Africa

I

first met Rev. Teresa Pryor, a member of Brookland Baptist Church at a Sunday worship service inside Kirkland Correctional Institution.

What struck me about her was her unbridled enthusiasm for evangelism.

That, and a mutual interest in foreign Missions.

I had to know more.

In 2012, her interest in missions led her to join Global Volunteer Network, an organization recommended by Bill Gates for people who want to make a difference in the world.

And soon she was on her way to Ghana.

Today, she is an ambassador to 13 churches in Ghana, Liberia, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

She helps each one develop plans, goals and ideas for improving their community.

In addition, she teaches the Gospel, conducts classes on relationships, marriage, health and well-

ness. And she mediates disputes, advises the churches on building projects, daycare and how get doctors, nurses and pharmacies to serve the communities.

When in Africa, she visits several churches on each trip. The churches provide her with food, lodging, transportation and a translator.

While in Liberia, helping a younger pastor put on a women’s health conference for 14 churches, the men there wanted information about their own health.

So the pastor agreed to take them aside and help them.

There were some nurses and a PA in the congregation who came down and helped them. She called it Divine provision.

In a battered old car, he’d bump through pastures festooned with yellow bitter weeds, clunk past a lonely persimmon tree and ranks of white-faced cattle. Herefords, they were.

From afar, those cows would amble Granddad’s way, and when his jalopy closed in, they would break into a stiff-kneed trot.

To see the old man’s car was to see feed and hay.

The children of field hands and I sat in the back of Mr. Johnny’s cars.

Sometimes we rode on the trunk, sometimes on the fenders. We were invincible and we were oblivious.

The era of Jim Crow was upon us, but Joe Boy, Sweetie, Jabe, and I knew nothing about all that.

We were comrades united in our quests to knock down red wasp nests, catch bluegills, dine on tomatored persimmons, and swim in ponds sometimes blue, sometimes muddy. We lived like kings.

Granddad could cuss the horns off a billy goat.

When I was in his presence, I felt the need to hush

up. Outside of cussing, Mr. Johnny didn’t talk much, so neither Down South did I. Maybe that was good.

For what I remember from our drives through pastures about lightning bug time pleases me still. The grassy hillsides ... the fertile fragrance of pastures ... the lowing of cattle ... the distant line of dark trees and fishponds smooth as glass where bullfrogs commenced to sing and fireflies lit up clumps of grass.

When the car shut down with a shudder, and we sat still as stones, country sounds embraced us. Wind, lowing cattle, the distant hoot of a barred owl.

Nary an ambulance, fire truck, or police siren. “Sighreen” as the country folk are wont to say. “Did y’all hear that sigh-reen last night?”

Most of what pleased me as a boy took place on that farm.

And so I associate Granddad’s old cars with treasures—varnished cane poles, red-and-white bob-

bers, mats of algae that bewww.tompoland.net trayed tompol@earthlink.net snakes’ serpen_ tine wanderings, jelly-like clumps of frog eggs, and the heavy wooden boat Granddad made with its ever-present snakes beneath—treasures like no others.

Grandmom taught me to dig worms from beneath cow piles.

We marveled at a great pine of another epoch that served as a place to butcher cattle. We tread by it with reverence.

That farm was our Disneyland adventure, and Granddad’s old car carried us o’er its pastures, bottoms, and woodlands.

When we were on foot, we found mischief.

There was a time when a western section of Granddad’s pasture looked like a junkyard. Old cars, old tractors, farm implements, and all manner of scrap metal gave red wasps places to hang their waxy papery nests, which we gleefully clobbered with flint rocks.

I’d do it all again. All. It’s a shame we grow up.

By the time I was in college and too big for my britches, Granddad used a 1965 Chevrolet Bel Air as his truck.

Green like copper patina it was. He fueled it up at his own pump.

That pump stood between the house and the barn — all three gone, relegated to the dustbin of history, but this past Sunday, I stood right where the old pump stood, a yard from where Great Uncle Searles tried to knife Dad one heated Sunday afternoon.

You don’t forget things like that.

As for Granddad’s car, the only places it went were pastures, Dad’s saw shop, and Price’s Store, a classic country store with its roof now open to rain.

Granddad and Grandmom’s house burned two years ago.

Someone tore down the old barn where a million fleas would hop on you, and Price’s Store is mortally wounded.

Damn, if everything we love doesn’t just rot away.

History begs: “Not so fast.”

Fortunately for the legacy of Midlands aviation, the late Bill Hamson hung onto a treasure trove of photographs he took while assigned to Columbia Army Air Base during WWII. Local history is richer for it.

He often carried a wellordered notebook with him, yellowing plastic sleeves filled with stillsharp 8½" x 11" hard-copies of compositions that caught his keen eye on base, whether he was on or off-duty.

Having the notebook tucked under his long arms enabled him to offer anyone interested a chance to flip through pictures he had taken when he was stationed here in the 1940s for a quick lesson in local aviation history.

Hamson became interested in photography as a high school student in his native Boston.

After graduation and senior-year work on his school’s yearbook, he studied at Boston School of Graphic Design until, at age 18, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corp.

His background and skills won him an assignment as a Gunnery Training Photographer when he was sent to the Lexington County base.

Hamson’s images often are the only visual record of buildings, structures, vehicles and personnel that characterized the base, as well as ceremonial events that took place on this former family farm and in the capital city.

Hamson also allowed this author to include his vintage images as illustrations for “Cornfield to Airfield: A History of Columbia Army Air Base.”

Training was the goal of

many of Hamson’s shooting assignments – both in-air and on ground. Innovation that was cutting edge when he snapped his shutter experienced many improvisations over years of military progress.

He also was assigned to cover military involvement in the community, such as parades and reviews.

Being sent off-base for such assignments introduced him to the Capital City, which he chose to make his home for the remainder of his years, becoming a leader in the business community and his church, Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church in West Columbia.

He met, fell in love with and married a local teacher, Ann Elinor Awrey, who survives him. They shared 73 years of marriage.

William Arthur Hamson, passed away on February 16, 2018 at age 97.

In addition to his wife, Mary, he is survived by daughters Carol Whittaker (Don) of West Columbia; Virginia Hamson, of Lexington; Marilynn Bellmann (Charlie) of Charlotte, NC, and Barbara Kinney (Steven) of Duncan, SC; and son, David (Nancy) of Eutawville, SC; 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his nephew, Arthur Worringham of Denmark, Maine.

Hamson left a personal legacy to all of us.

In his 80s, he did two valuable things with his collection.

He donated it to the Richland County Library’s Walker Local History Room.

Manager Deborah Bloom transferred it to a digital collection providing access to researchers and posterity.

Bloom, manager of Walker Local History Room, said, “Richland Library is, of course, honored to be not only the home of the photography collection, but also as a tribute site to Bill and his service during WWII.” She added, “Because he never went overseas, Bill Hamson often minimized his WWII service; however, his photographs of CAAB, taken as a staff photographer, remain as one of the few remnants of the airbase.”

The City of West Columbia’s Kinetic Derby Day will be Saturday, April 21.

“Our intention is to present something new and exciting for our residents, and to give visitors to West Columbia a day of unique fun and adventure,” said West Columbia Mayor Bobby Horton.

Erin Didyoung, vice president of operations for Gosnell and Company Event Management, said there are only three other Kinetic Derby Days in the country.

“The events are best defined as an elaborate sculpture parade followed by soapbox car racing and plenty of art, food and family fun to make it the most-anticipated event of 2018.”

The idea to bring Kinetic Derby Day to West Columbia came from Mark Plessinger, owner of Frame of Mind Eyewear on State Street.

Plessinger is a strong supporter of the arts. At a planning meeting for the event, he said Kinetic Derby Day should be considered an arts festival but not a traditional one.

“There will be a small representation of art tents and vendors, but overall it will be more interactive than that,” he said. “I’m just excited to work with people to get everyone to understand their creative side.”

Registration for Kinetic Derby Day events has just begun. Organizers are planning to educate area residents about kinetic sculptures and how to participate.

Bee Sense A long time ago, there was a beehive in the middle of a forest.

Every day, the worker bees would go out into their fields, gather pollen from the flowers, and bring it back to make honey.

The bees had a problem, though, because every so often an intruder would come around, such as a bear who wanted the honey, or kids who thought it’d be fun to throw rocks at the hive.

Finally, the bees got tired of it. Being the intelligent bees that they are, they built an alarm system for the hive.

They built it such a way that when one bee would pull a lever, it would trigger an alarm that the bees could hear from the fields.

When the worker bees hear the alarm, they could swarm back to protect their home.

There was one bee who was exclusively assigned the job of setting off the alarm, and he was aptly named the “Lever Bee.” His job was to watch for signs of danger and pull the lever to sound the alarm.

Now obviously, the security of the hive depended on this one Lever Bee. So he had to be constantly ready and on the alert to be able to do his job.

And that, friends, is why people say, “I’m as ready as a Lever Bee.”

Fast food from the freezer

L

et's just face it, after a long day at work (or play), most of us don't want to prepare a meal.

But with just a little planning, your freezer can become your favorite "fast food" place.

Filling your freezer with pre-prepared meals saves time and money.

It also ensures you'll be eating something that is healthier than the typical fast-food meal.

When you freeze meals in advance, you control the quality of the ingredients and the amount of salt.

Almost everything from appetizers for dinner parties and breakfast dishes to complete meals and desserts can be frozen in advance with the proper planning and preparation.

I usually prepare all of my family's meals for the week on either Saturdays or Mondays.

Sometimes, I just cook all the meat or main dishes. Then all I have to do is steam some vegetables or prepare a salad, and dinner is served.

I also prepare a few extra meals — using some of the same meats, spices or ingredients I already have on hand — and freeze them.

By using a few freezer fastfood tips, you can serve a wellbalanced meal in minutes, and save money by preparing meals in advance and freezing them.

Preparing meals in advance means you'll have large amounts of food to shop for and to put away.

Plan your meals, make a list and shop in advance. It's never a good idea to cook on the same day that you grocery shop.

It's better to plan the shopping trip for one day and cooking for another day.

This also allows you to take advantage of any sales you might find on meats or vegetables. You

also can cook several different kinds of meats or main dishes and stock your freezer so that you have enough "fast food" meals for two to six weeks.

I try to use recipes with similar ingredients or cooking times so that I can chop up all the vegetables I need at one time, or bake more than one dish in the oven.

You also can stock your freezer by doubling the meals you make during the week.

You can serve one of the dishes and then stock your freezer with the other.

Make sure you securely wrap and seal your make-ahead meals to prevent freezer burn.

Write the name of the dish and the date on a label or on the plastic wrap or plastic freezer bag to make the dishes easier to identify.

Using freezer- and microwavesafe divided plates is one of the best ways to store individual, homemade frozen dinners.

Leftovers are the perfect choice for these frozen dinners.

The divided plates make the meals easy to defrost and reheat in the microwave.
