Sing (PG) — A down-on-his-

luck Koala (with the voice of an enthused Matthew McConaughey) tries to save his theater with a singing contest and ends up with a whole menagerie of talented critters pinning their hopes and dreams on the result.

The competitors include an overworked mother of many piglets (Reese Witherspoon), sensitive teen gorilla who wants out of his dad’s gang (Taron Egerton), a swaggering mouse (Seth MacFarlane) and a hard-rocking porcupine (Scarlett Johansson).

Illumination Entertainment (The Secret Life of Pets) makes another fun, high-energy entry.

You can tell you’re not in Pixar territory, so don’t worry about too much emotional depth, subtle humor snuck in for grownups or visuals that bend your perception.

It’s like jumping in at the finale for a contest show — easy entertainment with all the backstories and best bits in one package.

Miss Sloan (R) — Elizabeth

Sloan (Jessica Chastain) is a redheaded viper of a lobbyist twisting her way to the top of the D.C. pile. She’s calculating, tighter than a knot and has seemingly scraped out the majority of her personality to make room for more ambition.

While she normally works for the juggernaut pro-gun lobby, a strange change has Elizabeth fighting for a guncontrol bill, and ultimately,

in a congressional hearing (featuring a menacing John Lithgow) over her vicious and underhanded tactics.

The movie had to make two points really stick: This is Jessica Chastain’s vehicle, and the material is so relevant that it strikes a chord despite this version of D.C. being so removed from reality.

Chastain has the muscle for the role, but the role doesn’t support her in return: Ms. Sloan looks more like a stock miserablegreedy-mean-boss-lady character than a complex and flawed protagonist.

The film is split — sometimes confusingly — between documenting the humanitarian crisis and the day-to-day life of the locals.

It’s a documentary. It has a serious message that you cannot miss, but there isn’t a bunch of voiceover or scripted outrage in the film, just a

camera that doesn’t flinch.

This year's Red Bank Invitational had significant meaning for the White Knoll baseball team.

With four wins, the Timberwolves won back-to-back tournaments for the first time in school history. White Knoll earned one-run victories over Newberry and Fox Creek, routed Saluda 9-3 and rallied to beat Strom Thurmond 11-6 in the final.

"The thing I'm proud of is that we got punched in the face and this was the first time we've been down," Timberwolves' head coach Charles Assey said. "We hadn't trailed the entire tournament...and we responded."

Flag box a hit with hardware store customers ‘THEY DON’T BELONG IN THE TRASH’

American flags are as tough as the American people, but they wear down over time.

Without disrespectfully discarding the flag, how do you dispose of a tattered flag?

Lowe's employee Kathryn Corcoran wants to help people do just that.

Corcoran, who works at Lowe's on Sunset Boulevard in Lexington, has set up a Veterans of Foreign Wars drop box where you can retire your Star-Spangled Banners properly.

She had the idea when she needed to retire her own U.S. flag and saw it was a problem.

"I did some research, and was surprised to find out how many U.S. flags are found in the trash every year," Corcoran said. "That's not the way it should be done."

She then began to wonder how she could help educate the public about how to properly dispose of their flags.

"I thought, 'Maybe if we had a box on display at the store for people to see, it would help,’" she said.

After obtaining permission from her employer, she sought the help of fellow Lowe's employee Pat Reid, who then crafted a distinguished drop box.

"I told her I'd be honored to make it," Reid said, "so I designed it, put it together and decorated it accordingly with the VFW logo and everything."

"Distinguished" is the key word. The handcrafted wooden column features a premium glossy paint that shines beneath the fluorescent lighting of the store and is emblazoned with the VFW insignia.

After receiving the OK to set up the box, Corcoran also asked for permission to reach out to Lexington VFW Post 8738 Commander Ron Greenfield for help with retiring the flags.

Greenfield was ecstatic, and volunteered to pick up the flags every week and see to their proper disposal.

VFW Post 8738, with the help of local Boy Scouts, has a history of properly retiring and disposing of flags, which involves ceremonial burning.

"I thought it would slow down, but they're still coming in," Corcoran said.

"Some are your average home-front size, others are the size of cars or larger."

Since its installation, Greenfield estimates at least 200 flags have been retired through the drop box.

“It’s a wonderful thing,” Greenfield said. “So many people have commented, ‘Wow, I didn’t know I could drop off my flag here.’”

"I think anyone who sells flags at their business should offer a way for customers to dispose of the old ones," Corcoran said. "Flags don't belong in the trash."

It’s a Dog’s Life It’s phishing, Awful Raffle

In the rural South, occasionally you will find an older gentleman who still uses a mule to make a garden.

Until he was 72, my father used one and contended that if you knew what you were doing with a good mule, you never needed a hoe for the grass.

Well, there was this old man who had been using a mule for years and it finally died on him. Seeing as he really needed a large garden to hold down food costs, he made a trip to see the mule dealer.

Admittedly, they are rare, but they still exist.

At the dealer’s place he was surprised at how much prices for mules had increased in the last 20 years — mules live a long time.

After examining the available stock and the leanness of his wallet (he only had $125), he concluded he would have to settle for a mule almost as old as himself.

After extensive haggling with the dealer, they settled on a price, the old man made arrangements to return the next day with a horse trailer to pick up his purchase, and the dealer agreed to keep it overnight for him.

Early the next day, the old man returned to be faced with some bad news.

“Jim,” said the mule dealer, “that old mule died last night. I’m real sorry to have to tell you this. I know you were counting on it for your spring garden.”

Jim replied, “Well bad luck is bad luck, you really can’t do anything about it.

Where’s the mule now?”

“Oh, he’s out back, I was just getting out the backhoe to bury him. Hold on a minute while I get your money for you.”

“No, that wouldn’t be right,” Jim said. “I bought it, you were just holding him as a favor, it’s my loss, not yours. But, if you will

help me load him in the truck, I’ll see if I can recover a little for him at the dog food plant.”

Well, Jim loads up the mule and drives off.

A couple of months later the mule dealer happens to drive by Jim’s place and is astonished to see Jim working his garden on a new $4,000 garden tractor.

Leaning on the pickup horn, he calls Jim over and asks him how in the world he managed such a piece of equipment when a couple of months before all he had was $125 for a mule and the mule had died on him.

“Well,” Jim explains, “after leaving with the mule, I had this idea and I stopped off at the local print shop and had 2,500 $2 raffle tickets printed up. Grand prize...Gardening Equipment. Then I sold all the raffle tickets to people around town.”

“Yeah, out where did you get the gardening equipment?”

“From you,” Jim said.

“No, I mean the equipment you had as the raffle prize.”

“Like I said, I got it from you,” Jim answered.

“Man, all you got from me was a dead mule.”

“I know,” Jim said. “That’s what I raffled off.”

“My Goodness, Jim! You raffled off a dead mule?!

I’ll bet it really made a lot of people mad when they found out about it.”

“Naw, not really,” Jim said. “The only one really ticked off was the winner, and I gave him his money back.”

The original fake news: Reporter’s goof made America party like crazy

W

e’re hearing much these days about fake news. But it isn’t new. A century ago one incident of it drove America into a frenzied celebration.

The problem was, it wasn't factual.

Here’s how it happened.

Mankind had never seen anything like World War I. It featured such new horrors as poison gas, bombs dropped from the sky and machine guns. More than 17 million people from 32 countries died; another 20 million were wounded.

Naturally, people desperately wanted the war to end.

By November 1918 it seemed peace was finally within sight.

Which is where Roy Howard enters the story. He was president of United Press (later United Press International), a news service locked in fierce competition with rival Associated Press.

With the war winding down Howard was in Brest, France on November 7 meeting with Admiral Henry Wilson, commander of American naval forces in Europe.

Exactly what happened next is fuzzy. Wilson received word (either by telegram or phone) from a friend at the American Embassy in Paris saying an armistice had been signed that morning. The war was over.

As a former reporter, I can attest that journalists spend their entire career hoping for a scoop that big. And Howard had it all to himself.

He asked Wilson if it was OK to report the news. Sure, the admiral said.

Howard raced to the nearest telegraph office, where he violated UP’s own rules.

All dispatches coming from France had to be signed by Howard and William Simms, UP’s foreign editor. But Simms was 375 miles away in Paris. Waiting to reach him risked losing the exclusive.

So Howard simply forged Simms’ signature and sent

As for Roy Howard, he wiped the egg off his face and soldiered on.

He headed the E. W. Scripps Company in 1920, which later became the Scripps Howard newspaper and broadcasting chain. He even interviewed Josef Stalin in 1936.

Though when Howard retired in 1953, his big mistake from 35 years earlier still haunted him.

So let today’s Left and Right argue as they will. Fake news has been around for a very long time and will exist a long time from now, too. And that’s a fact.
