How dangerous are apps?

As parents and grandparents during this digital age we are often warned about the dangers of allowing our children on the internet. Schools are putting assignments online and encouraging children to be more proactive on learning via websites.

Everyone is on Facebook. Facebook even decreased its age limit so that more and more teenagers could access it.

In this time where we are pushing our children more online but constantly told how unsafe it is, how do we keep them safe?

Let’s start with their phones. What apps could they be hiding that are incredibly dangerous to them?

Predatory and Bullying Apps Pedophiles are becoming very technology savvy in order to gain access to our children. Some of the easiest ways are apps

where they can message them straight to their phone.

Kik is a messaging program. You can chat with friends and groups. You can even chat with a bot or a computer. However, problem is that it _ the can be used to chat anonymously. This opens the door for bullies who don’t want to be known and pedophiles who want access.

Tinder is a dating app. It is one of the more well-known programs because it shows you people who are geographically close to you and you can swipe their picture to indicate if you are interested or not. Now imagine this in the hands of a teenager. Not only is the rating system a potential self-esteem problem, but the ability to contact and hookup can lead to anyone meeting up with a child.

Snapchat is another messaging system.

This one is dangerous because the message “self-destructs” or deletes itself after being viewed. You are alerted to a message, which can be a video or a picture or just words, and you watch it. It then is deleted completely off your phone and their servers. So now, anyone can say anything without there ever being proof.

YikYak is a small social site. You go on and post something or comment on someone’s post. The problem with this app is that everything is done anonymously. So unless you post a name in your comment no one knows who it is. This setup is ideal for bullying.

Whisper is another social site. Its whole premise is that you share a secret with strangers. Again, here is the whole anonymous posting. You can say anything you want and without some serious computer knowledge, no one will know who posted it.

Hidden Apps While the predators and the bullies are scary enough, what about apps that allow our children to hide what they are doing?

HiCalculator is an app that allows you to hide messages, pictures, videos and more in what looks like a very simple and innocent calculator application.

Vaulty is another app that allows you to hide things within the program, however this one will even take a picture of anyone who tries to access it without the correct password.

Audio Manager looks like just another music app however it protects all sorts of files with a password screen.

In an age where compromising selfies and videos are coming from every side and our children’s idols are being exposed when cell phones are stolen, make sure to check out that device that rarely leaves their hands. Yes, it is an intrusion. Yes, it is a violation of their privacy. I’d rather that than the alternative. Wouldn’t you?

FISHING REPORT LAKE MURRAY:

It’s all about shallow water on Lake Murray right now!

Crappie: Fair to good. Captain Brad Taylor reports that the crappie he has been catching are around the banks where they will take minnows or jigs under a float.

Bass: Fair. Captain Doug Lown reports that most of the bass are scattered out in the shallows right now, with more than half of the fish still pre-spawn. Smaller soft plastic baits will catch fish.

Catfish: Fair to good. Captain Chris Simpson (864-992-2352) reports that catfish are moving shallower and they can be caught on cut bait fished around humps and points.

Striper: Good to very good. Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that striper fishing is hot, with fish scattered

RAVELIN’ WITH THE CHRONICLE

Glider pilots risk life, laugh about it later

Tom Nivens graciously showed MacLeod and me around the Silent Wings Museum and told us about the maverick pilots who flew troops behind enemy lines in unarmed, engineless gliders.

MacLeod and Jerry Bellune are spending their children’s inheritance traveling the country and enjoying every minute. Here is an account of their travels from South Carolina to the Southwest and back, a 4,736-mile trip through 11 states.

The enemy may not have been able to hear them but the men in them could.

“For us, it was louder than hell,” said pilot Donald MacRae, who flew troops to France on D-Day. They were also vulnerable to high winds and weather, enemy fire and treacherous landing zones.

The pilots who flew the gliders had to have a maverick streak in them.

All volunteers, their exploits are celebrated and on display at the Silent Wings Museum here.

Of the 6,000 who trained as glider pilots, some had washed out of conventional pilot training.

This was a second chance to fly.

Why they did it

The possibility of officer’s pay and the chance to fly attracted a rare breed of risk-tolerant volunteers.

Their maverick reputation quickly spread.

Gen. James Gavin, commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, lamented the pilots’ demeanor.

But he recognized the

audacity of landing a glider behind enemy lines.

“It is a chastening experience,” he said. “It gives a man religion.”

We walked through the museum with guide Tom Nivens, a 20-year Army veteran. At 94, he looks a good 20 years younger.

We talked about the young Americans who piloted the gliders and the troops riding with them.

They had to be thinking that this might be the last day of their short lives?

They dealt with the prospect of death with humor.

Flying Coffins

The called their gliders, flying coffins and joked that they got no flight pay or jump pay but there was never a dull moment.

They piloted America’s first military stealth aircraft – the Waco CG-4A combat glider – powered only by the prevailing winds and the guts of the men who flew them, wrote glider historian Michael MacRae..

Under cover of darkness on D-Day, the Waco gliders carried troops behind enemy lines to take out key defenses and transport hubs.

The gliders – engineless and unarmed – overcame all odds on their flights.

In the war’s pre-helicopter days, gliders were state-of-the-art in stealth, landing precision and

hauling.

The gliders had few safety features and no comfort.

Air pockets and 40-mph winds created violent turbulence. Enemy fire was constant and many pilots were killed or wounded before they could land.

Flak protection

With no parachutes, the troops took pains to protect their glider pilots.

“Some of the guys found an extra flak jacket for me – not to wear but to sit on,” MacRae said. “They didn’t want anything coming up from underneath the plane to hit anything vital.”

The CG-4A glider fuselage was 48 feet long and built of steel tubing with a canvas skin. Its honeycombed plywood floor could support more than 4,000 pounds, the glider’s own empty weight.

It could carry two pilots and up to 13 troops, or a combination of Jeeps and other heavy equipment.

The nose section could swing up to create a 5 x 6-foot cargo door of Jeeps, 75-mm howitzers or similarly sized vehicles.

With a wingspan of 83.5 feet, the Waco maxed out at 150 mph connected to its tow plane. Once the 300-ft length of 1-inch nylon rope was cut, typical gliding speed was 72 mph.

Other dangers

If enemy fire and high

winds didn’t get them, pilots faced other problems.

With more than 70,000 parts and little or no standards, some manufacturers produced a few duds with tragic results.

One accident almost ended the glider program less than a year before DDay. A Saint Louis-based contractor invited the mayor and other dignitaries to experience the excitement of a glider flight before an airshow audience of 5,000.

Spectators watched in horror as one glider lost a wing at 2,000 feet and crashed at the grandstand.

It killed all on board.

Investigators traced the cause to a faulty bolt.

Finally, with his rations gone and strength ebbing, he traded the bike to a soldier for extra rations and hiked another 35 miles to Brussels, Belgium.

MacRae and other pilots who flew troops into Normandy were awarded the Air Medal for their valor.

One pilot’s return

MacRae’s tow plane lost an engine and its pilot threatened to cut it loose over the English Channel.

After tense negotiations, the pilot agreed to wait until land was in sight.

MacRae landed safely, but about 25 miles from the intended landing zone.

His troops went off to find a fighting unit and he started walking back to his base in England.

In the Netherlands invasion, MacRae landed his troops 90 miles behind enemy lines and hit the road through no-man’s land with limited rations and a ramshackle bicycle.

We mark the female brains down because they’re used.”

Ken Jeong (“The Hangover”) and Olivia Munn join the crew, but the Tough Guy vs. Pipsqueak dynamic remains the same.

Sometimes, a good movie can make too much money. An acute and unexpected influx of box-office receipts can get infected, causing the growth of a benign sequel. This sequel fits just that prognosis -- Hart and Cube had such great success with their odd-couple buddy-cop action/comedy the first time around that a sequel became mandatory, good idea or not.

“Son of Saul” (R) -- This year’s Oscar winner for best foreign-language film is the brutal, upclose story of a man swirling in the darkness of a concentration camp. The whole film stays tight around Saul (Geza Rohrig), a Jewish prisoner of Auschwitz working in the “sonderkommando,” men who usher crowds of prisoners into gas chambers, then clean out the remains.

While the Red Army bears down on the camps and the sonderkommando plot a revolt, Saul sees a boy nearly survive execution, and

makes it his mission to find a rabbi so he can have proper funeral rites. It’s bleak and difficult, but unforgettable and well worth the trip.

“The Last Man on the Moon” (Unrated) -- Eugene Cernan is one of a handful of men who still carry memories of walking on the moon.

At around 80 years old when this documentary was made, Cernan’s descriptions are lit with vivid detail and deep perspective. Starting as an ace pilot in the U.S. Navy, Cernan was selected to be an astronaut and entered one of history’s most intriguing and exclusive memberships. The story of determination and sacrifice culminates in the 1972 Apollo 17 mission, when Cernan left the last footprint on the moon, not far from where he wrote his daughter’s initials in the unmoving dust.

The documentary is dense with imagery, from NASA footage to family snapshots, bits of Americana that recall a time when astronauts were Earth’s heroes. Cernan also should have “Epic Storyteller” attached to his list of talents. While it’s shown that he certainly earned his acclaim, there’s also sobering truth about how the hero fell short as a father.

“Krampus” (PG-13) -- The titular goat-legged,

anti-Santa demon of Germanic lore has been making a comeback of late, making appearances in “A Christmas Horror Story” and this frightening feature about the cost of family dysfunction during the happiest day of the year. Suburban boy Max (Emjay Anthony) is growing out of the whole Santa thing, but still hopes the Christmas spirit can help his parents (Adam Scott and Toni Collette). Max gives up on holiday cheer after an encounter with his naughty cousins, unwittingly conjuring the dreaded Krampus and its army of animated trinkets.

Tastevin aided wine tasting in France’s dimly lit caves

T

his week’s silver object is historic. The tastevin, pronounced “taht-vahn,” was developed more than 200 years ago in Burgandy, France, by the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin to taste wine in the region’s cellars. It has a hook to allow it to be hung from a chain or leather string.

You may have seen a restaurant sommelier wearing what looks like an ashtray or spoon around his neck.

The bowl of the device was never smooth, but had an irregular surface that refracted light so that the cellar master could see the color of the wine, especially the reds, in the candlelit caves.

THIS UNUSUAL SILVER piece reflects a great deal in it’s hammered surface. The delicate yet exacting hand of a master silver smith has both constructed and decorated the surface through hand hammering.

The surface hammering is at once extremely refractive yet mellow; softened by this intense textural effect.

This piece was crafted of very heavygauge silver; the perfect palette for hammering this extreme.

FURTHER ENHANCING THE surface is an indented line of hand chased silver tracery comprising acanthus leaves, pomegranate fruits and twigs. This decoration is beautifully and artfully presented. It is nearly as if there were two or more

silversmiths working on the object. The combination of a glittering hammered silver surface softened by the addition of sensual floral tracery is compelling and worthy of the attention it garners.

There is also a handle which sits atop the end. The handle has been fashioned as a loop that comes from the back and rests decoratively on the front. There are two acanthus leaves central to the handle.

The space within this loop is large enough to accommodate a silver chain or suede string.

THIS SILVER TASTEVIN bears the mark of the master silversmith of the Gorham company, Martele. It bears all of his decorative hallmarks as well, presented in the unique combination of strength and lavish beauty that define his body of work.

Lady Panthers thrive in soccer

By THOMAS GRANT JR. chroniclesports@yahoo.com Football isn’t the only successful Batesburg-Leesville High gridiron sport.

In soccer, the Lady Panthers has established themselves as winners.

Over the last three seasons, BatesburgLeesville has won 26 games and advanced to the Class A/2A playoffs three straight years.

Ranked fourth in this week’s South Carolina High School soccer rankings, B-L (91, 5-0) is two wins shy of a Region 2-2A title.

“We actually won a state championship co-ed back in 2010,” B-L assistant coach Maggee Ellis said. “These girls have played together since club (level). They wanted it.

They came out the first year blazing and we’ve continued to get better and played better teams this year.”

After an 8-0 start under head coach Marshall Harvey, the Lady Panthers were tested April 7 in West Columbia by Class 3A Airport. The 13th ranked Lady Eagles handed Batesburg-Leesville its first loss of the season 4-1.

The Lady Panthers also received a valuable lesson in defeat.

“It was a measuring stick for the team,” Ellis said. “We saw a few things that we are trying to tweak. The pace of game was a lot different, a lot faster than some of the teams that we’ve played. That was new to us. But it was good to see it before we go to the playoffs.”

B-L rebounded from the loss the next night with a 3-2 victory over Class 3A 15th-ranked Gilbert.

Nicole Lee’s goal with six minutes left broke a 2-2 tie.

With only one senior on the roster and three captains —juniors Kirkland Burkett and Kaitlyn Anderson and sophomore Paige Kaiser - the Lady Panthers look to establish a championship tradition much like the other “football” team.

Retired Brookland Cayce High School Coach John Daye has written two books on sports, ‘Glory on the Gridiron’ about the history of college football in our state and now, ‘Encyclopedia of Armed Forces Football’ about military service athletes. He discusses the book here with Chronicle Editor Emeritus Jerry Bellune.

Q. What happened to service football?

A. It is my understanding that bases around the coun-

try gradually moved away from football because of the cost. And high school, college and professional football began to flourish at an astounding pace.

One of the truly great collegiate stars of the day, Glenn Dobbs, a single wing tailback who was also a great passer.

Possibly the greatest of the early quarterbacks, Otto Graham, made his mark at the North Carolina Pre-Flight School in Chapel Hill as a single wing tailback who could also pass. He later played for the Cleveland Browns under head coach Paul Brown.

Another was Augusta, Ga., native Ben Moye who later coached at Presbyterian College and Brookland-Cayce High.
