Get smart about protecting your smartphone

Have you thought about security for your phone?

Smartphones are tiny computers.We really need to learn to take care of them as we do our desktops and laptops.

Now, Apple’s iPhone and iPads are easy to keep clean.

Apple’s proprietary software doesn’t allow a virus. It is the same reason that the FBI had such a hard time accessing information on a terrorist’s iPhone. Apple doesn’t allow access to their code. They only allow you certain access points so that applications can be built to go into their app store. Hackers cannot easily access iPhone programming to change it.

Android is an open source program to allow more and “better” apps.

That makes it easier for hackers to access to its programming. That means you’ll want to install antivirus software.

To make your decision easier, I’ve narrowed it down to the top five.

• Bitdefender, $9.95 / year, uses a cloud based system to scan your phone. While it helps boost speed so that a scan only lasts seconds, it also means that the scan doesn’t work without an internet connection.

Silver tea set respresents both chasing and repoussé

T

his silver tea set was crafted by hand near 1900. It features the accolades of fine silver made at this period. Silver at this time was in use and functioned on a daily basis. not just reserved as a decoration for a sideboard or dining room.

A close inspection will show the wooden handle on the tea pot which is in place to prevent the intense heat used in the tea making process from burning our hands.

You will also notice the sugar bowl is larger than most. This helps to date the set as sugar was considered rare at the turn of the century so a large sugar bowl such as this showed the wealth of the household that was able to fill it and serve it to those in attendance.

The body of each piece is hand made with a difference size base to each.

MURRAY: Bass: Fair. Captain Doug Lown reports that cool temperatures and wind have made for some tough fishing, but expect a lot of fish to move up next week on the full moon. Smaller soft plastic baits will catch fish.

Striper: Good. Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that striper are scattered out around the lake from 3-50 feet of water. Free-lines, planer boards, and cut bait fishing have all been catching fish.

Crappie: Fair to good. Captain Brad Taylor reports that a lot of post-spawn crappie are pulling out to deeper docks, bridges and brush.

Catfish: Fair. Captain Chris Simpson (864-992-2352) reports that catfish have backed out into deeper water with the cool weather but they will take cut bait.

This is also a way to understand the age; modern silver has a more mass produced look with each base being the same size.

In the case of this tea set, the base of each piece was crafted to ideally suit its use.

The body of each element is punched from underneath (repousseé) as well as surface decorated (chased), which allows a pleasing pattern to evolve.

The border decoration on each piece is cast and applied to each piece individually in the iconic turn of the century pattern known as LaVigne. This vine pattern represents a connection to the spirit and the body with the vine connecting generations.

A tea set like this represents so much more than three beautiful pieces. It beautifully reaches across the years to connect us to the ideals of earlier times, still valued today.

What Caped Crusaders can learn from bats

MacLeod and Jerry Bellune are spending their children’s inheritance traveling the country and enjoying every minute. Here is an account of their travels from South Carolina to the Southwest and back, a 4,736-mile trip through 11 states.

Carlsbad, N.M..

Did you grow up on such heavy reading as Marvel and D.C. comic books?

Yeah. We did, too.

Superman, Batman and Capt. Marvel were the big hits, followed by Wonder Woman, Plastic Man, the Green Lantern, on and on.

Those were our super heroes of those days. But Batman was a big favorite because, unlike most of the truly gifted super heroes from Krypton or somewhere else, he was a flesh and blood guy like us.

Sure he was wealthy but he used his cash to fight crime and help the cops with the bad guys.

Now why in the world are you reading a travel piece about comic books?

Do you hope somewhere along about here we might forget the Caped Crusaders and start telling you something interesting about places you may want to visit one day yourself.

Wait, there’s more

So here goes.

Back home in Lexington

County, many home owners were still baling out from the flooding. We had baled out the Chronicle office and figured it was time to head for firmer ground.

At this point, we had been on the road from South Carolina eight days, driven through seven states, stopped to visit newspaper editors and publishers, librarians, cafe owners and other folks in every state that had a Lexington and were headed for New Mexico’s famous Carlsbad Caverns.

We crossed the border at Stateline, TX, and stopped for a cool drink at one of those ancient gas stations that appeared to have been built shortly after the War of Northern Aggression.

You have to borrow a key attached to a brick to get into the restrooms.

The lady loading the drink machine winked at me and said that in a strong wind I’d find myself in New Mexico.

“Thanks, ma’am,” I said.

“That’s where we’re going.”

Bobbing Birds

You can tell you’re in the Southwest here. The land is devoid of trees. It’s so flat you could roll a bowling ball across it and the road runs arrow straight mile after boring mile.

It’s great for gas mileage and gives your brakes a chance to relax. Just don’t fall asleep at the wheel.

Along the roads in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico, you’ll see a strange wingless creature we named “Bobbing Birds.”

These birds don’t fly.

They’re oil pumps. As they work, they bob up and down, drawing petrol out of the dry ground.

They look much like those little toy birds you’ve seen that bob up and down as if they’re drinking water.

We rolled into Carlsbad, a dusty desert town 20 miles from the famous caverns that bear its name.

The young man who checked us in at the motel said he was a grad student working to pay off loans.

We would be smart, he advised, to drop our bags and head for the caverns.

The “Bat Flight” would begin just after sundown.

That was an hour away.

“Take a flashlight,” he said. “You may need it.”

Bat Flight

We’ve been fortunate to witness many wonders.

The Bat Flight is high up on our list of them.

We headed southwest on U.S. 62/180, turned off on the Guadalupe Mountain road that would take us high above the Chihuahuan Desert to the Carlsbad Caverns’ entrance.

Up to 450,000 bats, 16 varieties of them, come boiling out of the main entrance to the Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico nightly. They fly hundreds of miles round trip in search of food for themselves and their young back at the caverns.

Hundreds of cars were already there in a stepped mountain parking area.

Below us, we could see a pond the size of a Lake Murray cove, the caverns’ gaping mouth in the facing hillside and several hundred visitors in an amphitheater carved from solid rock waiting for the show.

The young woman park ranger told us we would be seeing up to 450,000 bats of 16 varieties, many of them Brazilian free-tails.

One amazing thing about the bats, she said, is that the mothers can find and feed their young in-

side the caverns’ total darkness.

The show begins

As a precaution, she asked us to turn off lights, cameras and phones so we would not distract the bats as they come flying out of the cavern’s mouth.

Minutes later, the bats began to fly out in black clouds, circling counterclockwise above the pond in the twilight. Then they swarmed over the hills to the east in search of food.

They would be gone all night, feeding on insects and returning just before dawn to feed their young.

We would not be there but the ranger said it is worth rising before sunup to watch their return.

Always ask the locals what they would show visiting relatives in their area.

Dachshund: You know I can’t reach that stupid lamp!

Rottweiler: Make me.

Boxer: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark.

Lab: Oh, me, me!!!!!

Pleeeeeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I? Pleeeeeeeeeze, please, please, please!

German Shepherd: I’ll change it as soon as I’ve led these people from the dark, check to make sure I haven’t missed any, and make just one more perimeter patrol to see that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation.

Jack Russell Terrier: I’ll just pop it in while I’m bouncing off the walls and furniture.

Old English Sheep Dog: Light bulb? I’m sorry, but I don’t see a light bulb?

Chihuahua: Yo quiero Taco Bulb.

Pointer: I see it, there it is, there it is, right there ...

Greyhound: It isn’t moving. Who cares?

Australian Shepherd: First, I’ll put all the light bulbs in a little circle .

Poodle: I’ll just blow in the Border Collie’s ear and he’ll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.

The Cat’s Answer: Dogs do not change light bulbs.

So, the real question is: How long will it be before I can expect some light, some dinner, and a massage?

Three Hymns One Sunday a pastor told his congregation that the church needed some extra money and asked the people to prayerfully consider giving a little extra in the offering plate. He said that whoever gave the most would be able to pick out three hymns.

After the offering plates were passed, the pastor glanced down and noticed that someone had placed a $1,000 bill in offering. He was so excited that he immediately shared his joy with his congregation and said he’d like to personally thank the person who placed the money in the plate.

And there sat our Rosie all the way in the back shyly raised her hand. The pastor asked her to come to the front. Slowly she made her way to the pastor. He told her how wonderful it was that she gave so much and in thanksgiving asked her to pick out three hymns.

Her eyes brightened as she looked over the congregation, pointed to the three most handsome men in the building and said, “I’ll take him and him and him!”

Just One Question Recently a teacher, a garbage collector, and a lawyer wound up together at the Pearly Gates. St. Peter informed them that in order to get into Heaven, they would each have to answer one question.

St. Peter addressed the teacher and asked, “What

was the name of the ship that crashed into the iceberg? They just made a movie about it.” The teacher answered quickly, “That would be the Titanic.” St. Peter let him through the gate.

St. Peter turned to the garbage man and, figuring Heaven didn’t REALLY need all the odors that this guy would bring with him, decided to make the question a little harder: “How many people died on the ship?” Fortunately for him, the trash man had just seen the movie and answered, “about 1,500.” “That’s right! You may enter.”

St. Peter then turned to the lawyer. “Name them.”

Chaos Did you hear the one about the doctor, engineer, and programmer who were debating what the world’s oldest profession was. The doctor said that medicine was the oldest because the Lord performed surgery in the removal of Adam’s rib.

The engineer countered that before that act, the Lord had performed feats of engineering by creating the earth and heavens from nothing.

The doctor conceded that the engineer was right and that engineering was indeed the oldest profession.

But then the programmer interjected that programming was even older.

He was chided by both the doctor and the engineer saying that engineering had to be the oldest, because before the Lord engineered the earth and heavens, there was nothing, only the Great Void, only Chaos!

The programmer simply smiled and said: “Where do you think the Chaos came from?”

The Farmer and the Pig A farmer and his pig were driving down the road when a cop pulled him over. The cop asked the farmer, “Didn’t you know it is against the law to ride with a pig in the front of you truck?”

The farmer replied, “No, I didn’t know that.” The cop asked the farmer where he was going and he said, “To Memphis”.

The cop said, “I will let you off the hook this time if you promise to take the pig to the zoo when you get to Memphis.” So the farmer promised he would.

Several days later the cop spotted the farmer with the pig driving down the road and he pulled him over again. The cop said “I thought I told you to take this pig to the zoo when you got to Memphis.”

The farmer replied, “I did and we had so much fun, I taking him to Kings Island now”.

Teaching the Teacher One day a 6 year old girl was sitting in a classroom.

The teacher was going to explain evolution to the children. The teacher asked a little boy.

TEACHER: Tommy do you see the tree outside?

TOMMY: Yes. TEACHER: Tommy, do you see the grass outside?

TOMMY: Yes. TEACHER: Go outside and look up and see if you can see the sky.

TOMMY: Okay.(He returned a few minutes later) Yes, I saw the sky.

TEACHER: Did you see God? TOMMY: No. TEACHER: That’s my point. We can’t see God because he isn’t there! He doesn’t exist.

A little girl spoke up and wanted to ask the boy some questions. The teacher agreed and the little girl

asked: LITTLE GIRL: Tommy, do you see the tree outside?

TOMMY: Yes. LITTLE GIRL: Tommy do you see the grass outside?

TOMMY: Yessssss (getting tired of the questions by this time).

LITTLE GIRL: Did you see the sky?

TOMMY: Yessssss LITTLE GIRL: Tommy, do you see the teacher?

TOMMY: Yes LITTLE GIRL: Do you see her brain?

TOMMY: No LITTLE GIRL: Then according to what we were taught today in school, she must not have one!

Direct Diagnosis Judy rushed in to see her doctor, looking very much worried and all strung out.

She rattles off, “Doctor, take a look at me. When I woke up this morning, I looked at myself in the mirror and saw my hair all wiry and frazzled up, my skin was all wrinkled and pasty, my eyes were bloodshot and bugging out, and I had this corpse-like look on my face! What’s wrong with me, Doctor?”

The doctor looks her over for a couple of moments, then calmly says, “Well, I can tell you that there ain’t nothing wrong with your eyesight.”

Couch Theater DVD PREVIEWS

PHOTO: Jennifer Lawrence in “Joy” Photo Credit: Twentieth Century Fox --PICKS OF THE WEEK “Joy” (PG-13) -- Jennifer Lawrence plays an unbreakable woman who writes her own destiny with the power of at-home TV shopping. It’s sometime in the early 1990s, and Joy (Lawrence, playing a character loosely based on a real-life tycoon) is a divorced single mother who has needy dream-stompers for parents (Robert De Niro, Virginia Madsen), a scheming stepsister and an ex-husband (Edgar Ramirez) who lives in the basement. Joy gets within reach of her dreams when she brings her improved mop invention to a starry-eyed producer (Bradley Cooper) at the new QVC home-shopping network.

Director David O. Russell continues his work with Lawrence and Cooper, but it’s hitting on diminished returns. The on-camera people are still holding up their end -you only keep watching because Lawrence remains charming and compelling -- but the storytelling is all over the place. It’s a strong performance let down by whimper of a conclusion.

“Race” (PG-13) -- Jesse Owens was a

track and field superstar who won an unprecedented four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He also was black, and that put a dent in Hitler’s whole masterrace thing. Owens (Stephen James) gets into Ohio State with a track scholarship in 1933, where he works with coach Larry Snyder (Jason Sudeikis), who teaches Owens to be single-mindedly focused on the gold. While Owens faces racism in his own country, deciding whether or not to compete in a country that’s undergoing ethnic cleansing is pretty tricky.

The film creates an engaging story, but does so by sticking irritatingly close to the trends and cliches in these hero-athlete movies. James and Sudeikis make a good onscreen team, but a lot of James’ character seems glossed over. There also are a few confusing historical revisions in the movie that keep it from the top-most podium.

“Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” (PG13) -- Jane Austen’s classic novel gets a gory reimagining with a fresh infusion of undead carnage. Based on a book by Seth Grahame-Smith that set off a whole trend of adding monsters to literary canon, the film is appropriately bloody and pithy, but it’s hard to say if it adds up to anything worthwhile. There’s a neat rush of absurd fun when Elizabeth Bennet (Lily James) display efficient zombie-slashing prowess. However, the bit wears thin rather quickly, and without the right balance, the high-contrast combination of zombies and stuffy period costume seems ever more pointless.

Indoor pets are also at risk. The grooming your cat does can mislead you on external parasites such as fleas and ticks. Flea allergy dermatitis is the most common skin issue of indoor cats. If your cat spends time on balconies, screened porches, or sits at screened windows; they can be at risk. Flea allergy dermatitis, mycoplasma, and hemobartonella are all important flea related diseases in cats. Hemobartonella is also an emerging disease in human medicine.

If you see flea dirt on your cat, it indicates a really bad problem. We often see fleas more commonly in cats, but they can also get ticks and tick borne diseases. If you have house plants, your indoor pet can be at risk if they dig or get in the dirt.

In South Carolina the main tick species is the Lone Star Tick, which may not always wait for you or your pet to come to them.

They have been known to actively crawl toward their unsuspecting host. We also have the American Dog Tick which likes your dog but also the squirrels and raccoons in your neighborhood. The Deer Tick is most associated with Lyme disease but transmits other diseases too. The Brown Dog Tick is the only tick that prefers to feed off dogs during all its life stages. It can survive a lower humidity and can infest buildings such as your home.

Prevention is the best way to protect your pet and your family. Talk with your veterinarian about what is the best approach for your pet. There are oral as well as topical products to protect your pet. The saying is true. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

451 wins and counting for B-C boys’ soccer coach

Brookland-Cayce High School Soccer Coach Kevin Heise is the newest member of the 450 career-win club.

He picked number 450 with a 2-1 win at Aiken on April 12. With currently 451 victories and the seventh-ranked Bearcats starting the week a win shy of a Region 5-3A title, Heise trails only River Bluff’s Phillip Savitz for most victories among South Carolina boys’ high school soccer coaches.

Heise began his coaching career in 1991 at his alma mater BrooklandCayce. That he’s involved in soccer is not surprising, but that he is a high school coach is.

“I’ve always loved soccer,” Heise said. “Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve loved the game,” It’s the ultimate team game. No timeouts.

No down time.”

But at one time, when Heise was graduating high school, he figured he might follow a career path that did not involve education.

Luckily, soccer snared him

and it’s a job he loves.

“Players have to be coached in practice and execute in the game,” he said.

“It’s a tremendous game and you cannot hide players in soccer.”

Heise said he’s also motivated by the novelty of each year.

“I love the challenge that each year brings,” he said.

“Every team is different.

He said each team has different strengths and different weaknesses, with different personalities.

“It’s always a challenge,” Heise said. “I love having to play the hand you are dealt in high school soccer and try to get the most from every player and every team.”

He also said he sees the game just getting bigger.

“I think the potential for soccer’s growth is unreal,” Heise said. “With all the buzz about concussions and such in football, I believe you’ll see more and more youth take up soccer.”

He said soccer is already the fourth most-participated team sport in the country, behind football, track and basketball.

“The game is constant and players are always involved during the match,” Heise said. “With the amazing growth of the professional leagues - MLS and USL - and the enormous access on TV now, soccer is more visible than ever, more mainstream.”

Brookland-Cayce plays host to Swansea Friday and closes out the regular season Monday at Airport.

A Dutch Fork High School student has been named one of South Carolina’s top youth volunteers in this year’s Prudential Spirit of Community Awards.

Michael Templeton was selected as a “Distinguished Finalist” for K 4 Kids, a charity he co-founded with his sister to collect and distribute recyclable supplies for teachers and schools in need.

On April 13, Templeton’s charity delivered 1,400 books to Seven Oaks Elementary School.

In addition to leading the charity, the Dutch Fork High School junior also has been the school’s mascot for three years.

“It’s an honor,” Templeton said. “I’m grateful, but really I feel like giving back is just doing the right thing.

It’s what we should do….I love bringing all the supplies to people and seeing big smiles on their faces. I think it’s our responsibility to give back to those in need and that’s what K 4 Kids is all about.”

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards represents the United States’ largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteer service.

All public and private middle level and high schools in the country, as well as all Girl Scout councils, county 4-H organiza-

tions, American Red Cross chapters, YMCAs and HandsOn Network affiliates, were eligible to select a student or member for a local Prudential Spirit of Community Award.

More than 115,000 young volunteers have been honored at the local, state and national level. As a Distinguished Finalist, Templeton has received an engraved bronze medallion.

“The recipients of these awards demonstrate that young people are making remarkable contributions to the health and vitality of their communities,” said John Strangfeld, chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial. “By recognizing them and placing a spotlight on their volunteer activities, we hope to motivate others to consider how they can also contribute to their community.”

Last year three students from District 5 received Prudential Spirit of the Community Award honors.

A student from Chapin Middle School was selected as one of two state honorees for charity work to raise funds for a young mother in his community with advanced breast cancer.

A student from Irmo High was named a 2015 Distinguished Finalist, while a student from Dutch Fork High received a Certificate of Excellence last year.

District 5 Superintendent Dr. Stephen Hefner said, “District 5 has a tradition of giving back to the community, and we are proud that our students are leading the way in this area. We congratulate Michael on his recognition, and thank Prudential for shining a spotlight on the differences our students make in their communities.”

Do You Go to The Dentist?

You might be surprised to know that over half of Americans do not have a “Happy Dental Home” and over 60% of Americans do not go to the dentist regularly? Why is this?

The number one reason is not fear or anxiety (although that is often a factor). The number one reason most people don’t go to the dentist is….Failure to see a need! I was surprised when I saw this myself. But it shows a failure of my profession to educate the public of the need to make regular dental care a specific part of your overall health. (Now, many marketers and skeptics will point out that education is not enough to motivate most people to change. After all, we all know an overweight physician who smokes!)

So what is the reason that people think that the dentist wants to visit them regularly? According to the survey, the reason they believed was so the dentist could make money on recall appointments.

I was shocked! We view hygiene recall appointments as a cost effective way to maintain the dentistry that we have placed in the patient’s mouth and to keep the patient healthy.

They are the best way that a patient can prevent bigger problems. It is really our duty as a health care practitioner to advise you of the best way to take care of your mouth and your dental care, and regular recall visits are usually a big part of that care.

The other reason to visit the dentist is the link between gum disease and heart disease (the periodontal-cardiovascular link).

The bottom line is that the same bacteria that causes gum disease has been linked to heart disease. And the inflammation in your

gums can cause inflammation in your heart and the heart lining.

What is the number two reason that people do not visit the dentist? A previous bad experience.

This afflicts so many patients, young and old.

And I still see it in practice today. The scenario plays out like this. A young child needs some sort of dental treatment. The last words that the child hears, coming in from the waiting room is “don’t be afraid of the dentist” or worse, “don’t be afraid of the shot”. The child can only be apprehensive or fearful going into the operatory.

It’s no one’s fault. It just is.

When most “boomers” or older patients were children, dentistry was far from “comfortable”. The anesthetics were not used routinely, and when they were used, they were not nearly as effective as they are today. The dental handpieces (“drills”) were not as efficient, and as high powered as they are today. The dental burrs were not as efficient either. Many older patients remember the old belt driven low speed drills. (As a child, I remember the dental assistant getting her hair caught in the old belt driven low speed that she was using on my teeth.)

No wonder patients have bad memories, or hate going to the dentist! Heck, I’ll bet that dentists didn’t like it either!

So often now, when I interview a new patient, or even just chat with an old patient, they say something like “Doc, I just have bad memories as a kid. The dentist held me down, and didn’t use any novocaine or gas.” These experiences, for the patient, no matter how true or embellished are real in the memories of the patient. They almost always occur between the ages of 7 to 10 and are “imprinted” in their psyche. Just as a baby duck is imprinted at birth to follow its mother, these memories are imprinted in their minds and are a part of them.

Let’s examine what happens in times of stress.

When the human is in a stressful position, a phe-

nomenon called “Fight or Flight” takes over. Adrenaline, or epinephrine is secreted by our adrenal glands. This adrenaline causes our heart rate to increase, our breathing to increase and get shallow, maybe cause some sweating, and our digestive system to slow down (or cramp up).

This bodily reaction served us well in “Caveman Days” to prevent being eaten by a saber-toothed tiger, but don’t help us deal with the stress of going to the dentist.

If you are plagued by these old thoughts and experiences, you can take comfort in knowing that the old days of dentistry are long gone. Today’s modern dentistry is much more efficient and much more comfortable. Today’s dental experience is totally different from the dental experience of the old days.

What can you do to help the dentist make your experience better?

Do tell the dentist exactly what you want. The more “exact” you can be, whether what you are expecting from the treatment, to how you want your front teeth to look, will only help the dentist deliver the experience or the outcomes that you want.

Do ask the questions that you need answered. Its only right that you get all of your questions answered, right?

There are no “dumb” questions, and you need to know everything to help

you make a quality and proper decision.

Don’t put off dentistry that you need until it really hurts. This only complicates things, and makes the procedures more complex and expensive. And, unfortunately, it is harder for the dentist to thoroughly anesthetize a tooth when it is hurting, or infection is around it.

Do act as a partner with your dentist. Give a complete health history. Tell the dentist your previous dental history. Be specific. The best thing you can do to help a new dentist is to tell them what you didn’t like about your old dentist, or dental office.

Do tell the dentist what you really envision for your smile.

Do realize that your teeth do affect your overall health. As we mentioned before, there are so many links between your cardiovascular health and your dental health.

Do let the dentist know if you have any discomfort, feel uncomfortable, or have to go to the restroom. It is easier for the dentist to deliver his care, if the patient is comfortable.

Do consider sedation dentistry. Many patients appreciate sedation dentistry, if they are apprehensive, or just want to get a lot of dental work completed, and not be aware of lying in a dental chair for an extended period of time. Sedation dentistry can be through oral medication, or intrave-

nous medication, and is a great way to accomplish your dental work and have a nice relaxing day. (Imagine, going to the dentist to relax!)

The good news is that dentistry has changed, improved and progessed from “the old days”. Its much easier than ever before!
