PICKS OF THE WEEK Fifty Shades Darker (R)

— This second installment in the movie franchise based on the obscenely well-sold erotica books offers more less-wildthan-you’d-think sex scenes packaged in a degradingly dumb romantic plot.

In the last movie, Ana (Dakota Johnson) ditched chis-

eled billionaire bedroom badboy Christian (Jamie Dornan) after things got a little rough.

Now he really wants her back, and Ana can barely say no before giving in to whatever Stubbleface McMoneybags wants.

To try to develop the plot this time around, producers deftly avoided giving Ana or Christian any kind of depth or meaningful shift in their relationship. Instead, there’s a plot with Ana’s aggressive lawsuitliability of a boss.

Ana says she wants independence, before handing control of her life and career to Chris in exchange for lavish wealth and sexy times in a re-

ally nice shower.

Things to Come (R) — After 25 years of marriage, Nathalie (Isabelle Huppert) learns that her husband (Andre Marcon) is moving in with his much-younger lover.

Nathalie still has “intellectual fulfillment” as a professor of philosophy, with strong bonds to her adult children and former students.

As she explores the newfound freedom she didn’t ask for, a former student (Roman Kolinka) appears as a potential romance. Nathalie also must care for her ailing mother (Edith Scob) grappling with dementia.

Huppert’s performance already has award rumors popping up, as she handles a strong and complicated character. There’s a fine balance between coping with loss while embracing new beginnings and facing life’s ongoing struggles. All the while, Huppert gives a performance of stern intellect mixed with human vulnerability.

Void (R) — This low-budget love letter to 1980s horror traps a small-town cop (Aaron Poole) and a bunch of Canadian locals in a hospital surrounded by robed knife-wielding cultists.

The night really takes a turn

when people in the hospital start turning into twisted shape-shifting gore monsters, a la 1982’s The Thing.

As a true fan of that cinematic classic, this reviewer was impressed by the dedication to practical effects, and the confirmation that using good ol’ rubber parts and fake blood makes better horror than any CGI. Too bad the plot’s a bit topheavy and the characters aren’t as fleshed-out as the fleshy monsters.

A Street Cat Named Bob

(Not Rated) — James Bowen (James Treadaway) lived on the streets, strumming his guitar for money between metha-

done treatments and meetings with his addiction counselor (Joanne Froggatt). As James starts to piece a life together in a new apartment, a rambunctious orange cat breaks into his kitchen — and into his heart.

Dubbing him Bob, the cat and human help each other through their respective recoveries. Based on the best-selling memoir by the real-life Bowen, it’s predictability puts up barriers around many of the sentimental moments in the uplifting drama checklist.

Cats are good at getting around barriers though, and Bob defies you not to be charmed by him.

The music never ends for Broadway actress Susan Watson

Best known for her roles in musical theater, Tony-nominated actress and singer Susan Watson released a collection of 14 Broadway and jazz standards on her CD “The Music Never Ends” last fall.

“Some of these tracks I had sung earlier in my career and others I had always heard and loved, and just wanted to get them recorded,” said Watson from her home in Sherman Oaks, California (see www.susanwatsonmusic.com).

As an added bonus, says Watson, six of the songwriters on the CD were women well into their 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s.

“America remains a unique bastion of innovation and opportunity,” she said. “I’m 78-years-old and am still having a lovely time in show business and in life.”

Raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by a father who played the piano and mother who danced, young Susan performed in high school plays before heading to New York to major in singing and dancing at the Juilliard School. When the opportunity arose to move to London for a production of “West Side Story,” she grabbed it.

“I snuck away from classes one afternoon for auditions,” recalled Watson. “By the time I got back to my apartment I was offered a part.”

While her role was only the understudy for the leading lady, the experience was invaluable.

Director/choreographer Gower Champion offered her the role of Kim MacAfee in the Broadway production of “Bye Bye Birdie” which opened in 1960.

When casting calls were made for the 1963 movie version, Watson traveled to LA for an audition.

“I lost out to Ann-Margaret, but

that’s the way it goes,” she said. “I stayed in Hollywood for a while and appeared on TV shows like ‘Dobie Gillis.’”

She also had a chance to work with a larger-than-life Hollywood star.

“I did a sitcom pilot for a show called ‘Maggie Brown’ with Eth-

el Merman and I was to play her daughter. Ethel was a take charge person, I can tell you, and didn’t need any instruction from the director. She staged the opening song, “Mutual Admiration Society,” that we sang together, and knowing I was a dancer suggested I should do a few kicks during the routine. We were

both disappointed when the show wasn’t picked up.”

Watson went on to appear in over half a dozen more Broadway shows, numerous off-Broadway plays, as well as in summer stock and other popular productions across the country.

Back on Broadway in the early 70s, Watson played Nanette in “No, No, Nanette” which featured 1930s film star Ruby Keeler, returning to the stage in her 60s, having retired from acting in the 1940s.

“She was a great hoofer, and we revered her,” Watson recalled. “She was very famous and sometimes you don’t feel comfortable trying to get close to someone like that, but she was always a dear to us.”

Watson is especially proud of her recent CD not only because it contains classic songs from legends such Stephen Sondheim, the Gershwins, Jerome Kern, and Irvin Berlin, but because it features works by veteran women songwriters including Phyllis Molinary, Gretchen Cryer, Michele Brourman, Amanda McBroom, and Marilyn Bergman.

“These women have had long, successful careers,” says Watson. “I hope that in the CD’s production and content, it symbolizes that active, empowered, senior women are a resource that America can be proud of.”

Airport High secures Region IV-4A baseball crown with win over South Aiken

The Airport High School baseball team needed a win over South Aiken on April 21 to win the Region 4-4A crown and got it.

Coach Tim Perry said the championship — or the Eagles’ share of it — was a result a consistent mental attitude.

“I constantly coach our players about handling adversity better and playing with confidence and positive body language,” he said. “I think we have done an amazing job as a team handling adversity in games as it has presented itself.

“We have trailed in almost every game we’ve played this year but have showed no panic, no pointing fingers and turning on each other, no bickering, just playing the game with with no anxiety and having fun. Our highs are never too high and our lows never too low.”

Perry said his team played loose and anxiety free, and that may have been because of youth and inexperience.

“We only have three seniors and five juniors, and of those only two played every day last year,” he said. “Our inexperience and youthful exuberance has worked out in our favor thus far. We enjoyed and embraced the pressure situations because we have not had enough experience to panic.”

And regardless of cool, Perry said his players were relentless and their effort was spread.

“Perseverance is a good way to describe this team,” he said. “Other than Tyler Corbitt, who is a 2-time

all-region and all-state performer and an almost lock for both again this year (.413, 6 doubles, 2 triples, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 20 Runs, 7/7 in stolen bases), there are no real stars or prospects, yet anyway. Everyone contributes, everyone picks each other up. There is a different hero every night,” said Perry.

Because of the way the Eagles have played, Perry said he feels his team could be a “scary” team in the playoffs. Airport opened at home Tuesday against Wren and would face the Eastside/Westwood winner Thursday.

“If we continue to swing it well and can limit free base runners and free bases defensively and run the bases well,” Perry said.

“Runs are a premium in the playoffs so it is imperative that we limit mistakes.”

Where it all began in WWII

R

achel Haynie loves local history. She captured an important piece of it in writing “Cornfield to Airfield,” her book about the World War II origins of what is now Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

As we approach the 75th anniversary of the Doolitle Raid on Tokyo, she answers her Chronicle Editor Emeritus Jerry Bellune’s questions about how the book came about.

Q. Whatever compelled you to write a book about an airport of all things?

A. In 2011, as the 70th anniversary of the opening of Columbia Army Air Base (CAAB) approached, my search widened for written history of the base.

I knew I would need such research to write anniversary articles for area publications, realizing many in the Midlands had missed that aspect of local history.

Yes, there was an air base here in the Midlands - from late 1941-1945.

The reason some Midlanders didn’t realize there had been an air corps installation here? Much evidence of a military presence was obscured as Columbia Metropolitan Airport took over the sprawling base and returned the runways to commercial use.

The space had been used for commercial flights slightly prior to WWII. Some years before that date, my search had come up relatively dry as I sought history of the air base. At that time I needed background information because I was writing “Stalled,” a book of historical fiction.

That story opens when a now-renowned Mitchell bomber lost an engine and went into Lake Murray on a cool April morning in 1943.

The male main character of “Stalled” is the navigator bombardier on that crew.

At the time the aircraft was rescued from 150 feet of water in 2005, Hank Mascall was the only member of that crew still living.

My initial contact with Mascall and his family came through Dr. Robert Seigler who led the B-25 Rescue Group.

Q. How did you go about doing the research?

A. The attraction to writing the story was to experience Columbia and the Midlands through the eyes and ears of Oregon newlyweds who had never been East before Mascall’s WWII orders brought him here.

Phone calls and emails were soon deemed inadequate to capture the essence of their story. I drove to Oregon, across the Rocky Mountains,

to meet them in person. The friendship cemented with the family on that trip continues today, although both Hank and his wife Gerry passed away within a year of our visit.

Even though the plane in which the crew’s adventure began is now in the Southern Museum of Flight in Birmingham, Ala., it is called the Lake Murray B-25.

As I wrote over all those months, I kept hearing that (the late) Clayton Kleckley had written a history of CAAB. The joke was on me when one day I realized I had his history – in my hands. It was part of the material I had collected and studied. But his name did not appear on it.

Kleckley’s history amounted to only six typed pages. I didn’t realize what I had because I had been looking for an entire book. This was all there was, and I was glad to have it.

Kleckley’s work spurred me on.

We needed a fuller history of CAAB than six pages.

I found a great deal more at Maxwell AFB archives in Montgomery, Ala. One interview subject led me to another. I sifted through records and newspaper clippings, interviewed eye witnesses to the base’s development, and personnel who served on base. Because there had been no published history

previously, I received continuous encouragement.

Q. Who helped you?

A. My decision to start the history with local families whose farm land became CAAB led me to interviews with gracious and interesting people – many named Roof.

My most significant breakthrough came with my interview of Bill Hamson who was part of the photography detail on the base during WWII. Hamson, who had his CAAB photographs carefully sleeved in a notebook, was as delighted that his pictures would see the light of day in “Cornfield to Airfield: A History of Columbia Army Air Base” as I was to have them. His photographs made the book.

and his wife Mary blossomed in that collaboration.

My inspiration to write, as it has been for decades, is the opportunity to help tell a story that deserves telling, especially when it would otherwise go untold.

Q. What would you tell aspiring writers about how they could get started?

A. For anyone considering becoming a writer, I advise: start at the end. Know who your readers will be, where they are and how you will reach them.

For me, it has become im-

portant to figure out before beginning who is expert enough on this topic to proof what I write – not just the pure editorial aspect, but the factual content.

In getting the cooperation of such an expert, a writer also would want to consider: has this book or article already been done? Perhaps by the expert?

Even if something published already is on the market, a fresh angle could always be taken.

New information often surfaces that changes what we believed was fact.

It’s a Dog’s Life Perceptions

In my sociology class, we were instructed to write down answers to some questions the teacher was asking.

“Next question,” announced the instructor. “How would you like to be seen by the opposite sex?”

I was thinking about my answer when the young woman next to me turned and asked, “How do you spell ‘intellectual?’”

Intermission The symphony is playing Beethoven’s Ninth.

During a long break, the bass players decide to slip out to the local pub and have a few drinks.

Suddenly, one realizes they have been gone for a while and says, “We’ve got to get back.”

Another says, “Relax, we’ve got plenty of time. I tied a string around the conductor’s score and he’ll have a time getting it squared away.”

As they come back into the concert hall, a patron in the audience notices the confusion by the conductor and says, “Something seems wrong up there.”

Her date says, “What do you expect? It’s the bottom of the Ninth, the score is tied and the bassists are loaded.”

He hangs up, and the son immediately calls his sister in the Hamptons and tells her the news.

The sister says, “I’ll handle this!”

She calls Florida and says to her father, “Don’t do anything until my brother and I get there. We’ll be there Wednesday night.”

The father agrees. He hangs up the phone and hollers to his wife, “Okay, they’re coming for Thanksgiving. Now, what are we going to tell them for Christmas?”

County workers A fellow stopped at a rural gas station, filled his tank, and took a break by his car while drinking a soda.

As he relaxed, he watched a couple of men working along the roadside.

One man would dig a hole two or three feet deep and then move on.

The other man came along behind him by about 25 feet and filled in the hole.

The men worked right past the fellow with the soft drink and went on down the road.

Overcome by curiosity, the fellow headed for the first man.

“Hey there,” he said to the men. “Can you tell me what’s going on here with this digging?”

“We work for the county government,” one of the men said.

“But one of you is digging a hole and the other is filling it up. Isn’t that a waste of the county’s money?”

“Well,” one of the men replied, “normally there’s three of us — me, Rodney, and Mike. I dig the hole, Rodney sticks in the tree, and Mike here puts the dirt back.”

“Yeah,” Mike added. “Just because Rodney’s sick, that don’t mean we can’t work, does it?”

Two guys are driving down the highway when they get pulled over by a state trooper.

The trooper walks up, taps on the window with his nightstick, the driver rolls down the window, and the trooper smacks him in the head with the stick.

The driver says, “Why’d you do that?”

The trooper says, “In this State, son, when I pull you over, you’ll have your license ready.”

Driver says, “I’m sorry, officer, I’m not from around here.”

The trooper runs a check on the guy’s license, and he’s clean.

He gives the guy his license back and walks around to the passenger side and taps on the window.

The passenger rolls his window down, and the trooper smacks him with the nightstick.

The passenger says, “What’d you do that for?”

The cop says, “Just making your wishes come true.”

The passenger says, “Huh?” The cop says, “I know that two miles down the road, big mouth, you’re gonna say, “I wish that sucker would’ve tried that with me!’”

Beautiful silver server was perfect for keeping the caviar cold

his flower pot shaped, small silver vessel is about the size of a julep cup. Its form is very simple with banded construction, adding strength and stability to the high-grade silver it was crafted from.

The vessel is double-walled, much like an old style thermos. The interior is also washed with gold.

You may recall from previous articles that silver is protected from pitting when gold is washed over it. This is why your grandmother’s berry spoons often had gold washed bowls. There was an actual reason other than the obvious added beauty. This gold wash is also an indicator of age and helps to establish the value placed on silver by generations before us.

This vessel was made in France by the famous company Odiot. It has two figural handles in the form of falcons that extend from two sides. These handles are beautifully and realistically rendered with great attention to detail.

They are functional, they lend further stability and allow the piece to be grasped when in use.

Made for the service of caviar, this simple silver dish would have been filled with caviar with no fear of the pitting that normally occurs when serving this delicacy. Once filled, the entire dish would be placed in ice. The silver would take on a lasting chill, which would have been perfect to keep the caviar safe to

The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are at 356.95 (full pool is 360.00) and surface water temperatures in the morning range from the low to mid60s. The lake remains pretty clear.

As on many of the lakes around the state, largemouth bass on Lake Murray remain in full-blown spawning mode. Andy found a lot of fish spawning towards the end of February, and for a little while it looked like the spawn might wind up much earlier than usual.

However, the cold weather that followed set things back to a more normal pace and as a result there are still a lot of fish on beds. Andy estimates that about half the fish have spawned, and another half are close to or doing it right now.

As far as catching bass, Andy says that this is still the one time of year on Lake Murray when you can just go down the banks with a worm and catch fish.

If he were fishing a tournament he would start out early throwing a floating worm in spawning pockets and then try to find bedding fish once the sun got up.

If he just wanted to catch a bunch of bass Andy would throw a floating worm or shakey head around docks and grass all day.

There are no signs that the herring are starting to spawn yet, but it’s not far away.

Typically the herring spawn begins around the first of April, and it usually starts in the backs where water temperatures are

warmer and progresses out to the main lake.

That’s not always the case, though, and Andy says that at times he has found early spawning herring on the main lake.

It can also overlap with the bass spawn, and sometimes prespawn bass will feast on spawning herring — instead of recovering post-spawn bass eating herring.

Striped bass are pretty scattered, with Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reporting fish caught from as far up the lake as Dreher Island all the way down to the dam.

Generally, they have been found near the mouths of creeks, and they are also starting to set up off points – likely in anticipation of

the coming herring spawn.

Pulling free lines and planer boards has been the best pattern, and anglers need to be flexible about what depth they fish as fish have been found from 10 feet out to 50 or more. Keep your eyes open and don’t get locked into one depth.

Some schooling activity has been reported this week, and when you find birds right now you’ll almost always find fish nearby.

It’s a good time for crappie fishing, and Captain Brad Taylor says that right now you can find fish in a lot of different depths and places — but they don’t seem to be super-concentrated anywhere. There are fish pre-spawn,

spawning and post-spawn, which likely accounts for their dispersal.

Fish can still be caught trolling jigs and minnows.

There are fish around pretty much any shallow cover, and there are also some fish around mid-depth docks and brush. Prespawn and post-spawn crappie can be found in some of the same areas.

On the catfish front, Captain Chris Simpson (864-992-2352) reports that fish are super scattered. People are catching fish anchored on humps as shallow as just a few feet, and catching them drifting as deep as 45 feet. Herring and perch are working best but look for stinkbait to get better with the warming.

Space on your plate: How astro eating launched 3 food fads

T

hings were supposed be so different by now. Futurists predicted that by the 21st Century we’d travel in helicopter cars, vacation on Mars and wear those nifty space jumpsuits.

It didn’t turn out that way.

One thing they especially got wrong was food. Yet, Americans' fascination with the early Space Age did send folks over the Moon for several astronaut-related products.

Time to revisit three food fads from a future that wasn't.

NASA’s early programs seized the country’s fascination like nothing ever had. Space was hip, cool, trendy.

And one item shouted “space” like MARK POWELL no other: Tang.

It burst onto the scene when John Glenn drank it during his Friendship 7 flight on Feb. 7, 1962, one of several items he consumed to test eating in orbit.

General Mills shrewdly capitalized on it.

Everyday folks could taste the glamour of space flight themselves right in their kitchen.

Tang was the brainchild of prominent food scientist William Miller.

He also gave us Cool Whip, powdered egg whites and an exploding candy that had absolutely no connection to space, despite urban myths to the contrary: Pop Rocks.

They briefly disappeared 30 years ago and later returned. Tang has always been available.

Then there was Astronaut Ice Cream.

It was freeze dried to eliminate water and sealed in a pouch, removing the need for refrigeration.

It also removed anything recognizable to human taste buds. I’ve had some; it tastes like fiberglass insulation.

However, despite “astronaut” in

NASA hired Whirlpool to produce freeze-dried foods that could be used during long trips to the Moon. Yet, this one didn’t go, in spite of claims to the contrary.

A report somehow made it into the press that Astronaut Ice Cream was consumed during Apollo 7’s mission in 1968. But it wasn’t.

Astronaut Walter Cunningham ought to know; he served on that mission and later told an interviewer, “We didn’t have any of that stuff.”

Which brings us to our final product. It had the least imaginative name of all: Space Food Sticks.

Unlike Astronaut Ice Cream, this one really did take the E Ticket trip aloft.

Scott Carpenter consumed three small food cubes while travelling in Aurora 7, just 90 days after Glenn downed Tang.

Pillsbury trotted out its version around 1970, calling it a “nutritionally balanced” snack, the granddaddy of today’s energy bars.

Space Food Sticks faded from store groceries as the glory faded from the space program. You can still find them in space museum gift shops and online.

Futuristic foods from the Final Frontier are now oddities from a bygone era. The trend today is toward natural foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, and away from pre-packaged processed edibles. Ironic, isn’t it?

And I didn’t get my nifty space jumpsuit, either. Bummer.
