Fine Limoges candlesticks were part of large service

T

his lovely pair of porcelain candle sticks were made in France by Limoges in the 1890s. They are signed on the open base with an early Limoges hallmark.

They are made from the unique porcelain formula created by the Limoges Company and immediately recognizable to collectors. This porcelain is valued for its serene, mellow tone; the perfect palette for turn of the century artist who executed some of the most sought after porcelains of all time.

CANDLE STICKS MADE of porcelain are very rare and for them to survive over 100 years without damage is rarer still.

These pieces would have been made as part of a large table service, likely over 100 pieces and likely a custom order.

AS DEVOTEES OF Limoges porcelain will attest, it is the hand painted floral scenes that are the attraction. You will notice these are not decorated in the usual manner with a hand-applied gold leaf motif.

LAKE MURRAY:

Bass: Fair. Captain Doug Lown reports that cool temperatures and wind have made for some tough fishing, but expect a lot of fish to move up next week on the full moon. Smaller soft plastic baits will catch fish.

Striper: Good. Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that striper are scattered out around the lake from 3-50 feet of water.

Free-lines, planer boards, and cut bait fishing have all been catching fish.

Crappie: Fair to good. Captain Brad Taylor reports that a lot of post-spawn crappie are pulling out to deeper docks, bridges and brush.

Catfish: Fair. Captain Chris Simpson (864-992-2352) reports that catfish have backed out into deeper water with the cool weather but they will take cut bait.

Mini Printers In this age of smartphones, we’ve stopped printing photos quite as much as we used to.

How about a mini printer that prints photos we take with our phones?

You don’t have to worry about ink either.

Polaroid’s Zip Mobile printer has the ink built into the paper, you just send the photo over to the printer from your phone and it prints out decent quality photos. It is compact and easy to use.

Hopefully I’ve given you a few ideas. Now, I’m off to check the bank and see what I can buy myself, I mean mom.

MGES students place first in state competition

Lexington County School District One congratulates four students from Meadow Glen Elementary School who placed first in the EnlightenSC Energy Challenge that was conducted as part of the 2016 South Carolina 4-H Engineering Challenge, held April 9 at OrangeburgCalhoun Technical College in Orangeburg.

MGES Fifth-Graders Hailey Burrell, Cady Simril, Jane Taylor and Saniya Williams worked as a team in researching how to design an energy-efficient home, then creating a blueprint and scale model of the home for the state competition. The competition required students to design a layout for the home and surrounding property that maximizes the amount of natural light that brightens the residence while also ensuring that the residence is comfortable to live in and cost efficient to cool, heat and light.

Students were also required to incorporate an energy-crop garden in the

Students were asked to use only recycled or repurposed materials, such as old camera film, to create solar panels and skylights for their scale model home.

Lexington County School District One congratulates 14 students from three schools who won awards in the state competition that was conducted as part of the South Carolina SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference, April 14–16 in Greenville.

Lexington Technology Center Students Chris Brown and Devan Summerour, and Gilbert High School Students Nathan Craps and Hogan Hardee won a state championship by placing first in the TeamWorks competition this required the students to work as a team in constructing a miniature house and demonstrating their skills in performing carpentry, electrical, plumbing and masonry work. Judges evaluated students’ ability to comply with building codes, maintain a safe and clean worksite, correctly order materials needed for their construction project and properly use tools while maintaining accountability for all equipment that they utilized.

Couch Theater DVD PREVIEWS

--PICKS OF THE WEEK “Deadpool” (R) -- The first major Rrated Marvel flick follows jokey tough-guy Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), who enters a shady treatment program after receiving a terminal diagnosis. Wade’s torturous “treatment” awakens dormant superpowers (rapid healing and regeneration) but leaves him hideously disfigured. His new life is built around hunting down the baddies and rescuing his lady (Morena Baccarin) with the help of some second-string X-Men. It definitely shows how Reynolds has longed to play this character, and fans aware of comic-book “Deadpool’s” fourthwall hammering humor will be pleased with his delivery. He’s not morose or moralistic; it’s the refreshingly cheeky antithesis to the serious superheroes glooming up the cinemas these days.

“The Boy” (PG-13) -- Down at the Spooky English Manor, a rich old couple reaches out for a nanny for their 8-yearold son. Should be an easy gig, since the boy died 20 years ago and they just need somebody to dote on the porcelain-doll

they treat like a real boy. Greta (Lauren Cohan, “The Walking Dead”) takes the nanny gig so she can get away from a menacing ex-boyfriend back in the States.

Her relief turns to weirded-out suspicion when she finds that “Brahms” is a creepy doll she’s expected to feed and tuck in at night. Naturally, once Greta is alone in the house with the doll, it starts doing things on its own and scaring the crap out of her.

You got your haunted doll, creepy estate, stranded-girl and a handful of other wornout tropes holding this thing together. Director William Brent Bell doesn’t try to add much to the genre, and so the whole affair feels destined to fade in with the crowd.

There’s also a heavy reliance on jumpscares and foreboding sets, which get less and less satisfying the closer we get to the credits.

“Creative Control” (R) -- In a near-future New York, an anxious ad agent, David (director/co-writer Benjamin Dickinson), puts himself to work promoting the next big thing in mind-altering mobile technology -- glasses that put a virtual-layer over reality. David’s big plan is to entrust the technology to somebody with real creativity, so he hires comedian/musician/filmmaker Reggie Watts to make art for this new medium. Soon, David’s building and falling in love with a virtual avatar of his sleazy best-bud’s girlfriend, while his yogainstructor wife (Nora Zehetner) cheats on him with another yogi. It seems like there should be some deep thoughts on the na-

ture of love, perception and technology, but instead we end up with a twitchy romcom with a slight sci-fi twist.

“Regression” (R) -- Detective Bruce Kenner (Ethan Hawke) sinks into a twisted world where it seems shades of satanic sacrifice and conspiracy are hiding everywhere in his blue-tinted Minnesota town.

It starts when a disturbed father confesses to doing terrible things to his daughter (Emma Watson), but his memories aren’t clear enough to make the case. Time to bring in the expert (David Thewlis) on the controversial psychological practice of regression -- pulling out repressed traumatic memories using therapy and hypnosis. Charred Corn Tacos with Radish Zucchini Slaw

To make tacos, fill each tortilla with 1/4 cup corn.

Top with cheese and radish-zucchini slaw. Serve with lime wedges, if desired.

Serves: 8 to 12 3 to 4 ears Sunshine Sweet Corn 1 small onion, peeled and sliced into rings 1 small red bell pepper 1 cup cooked chorizo 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened 1/2 pound spicy pepper cheese, like pepper-jack or habanero cheddar 1/4 cup chopped green onions

Preheat oven to 400°F and preheat grill to high heat. Remove cornhusks and corn silk, and place fresh Florida Sweet Corn, onion slices and red bell pepper on grill. Grill corn and bell pepper for 8 to 10 minutes, turning every 2 minutes until all sides are slightly charred. Grill onion slices for approximately 3 minutes per side. When veggies are cool enough to handle, cut corn off cob. Then chop onions and pepper, removing pepper seeds. In 8-by8-inch baking dish or onequart souffle dish, mix all ingredients together until well combined. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes until edges are bubbly. Serve warm with tortilla chips.

Lexington, River Bluff earn national rankings

These are happy times for the Lexington High School girls’ soccer.

Ranked first in the Palmetto State and 19th nationally by USA Today for the first time ever, the undefeated Lady Wildcats can add back-to-back Region 5-4A champions to their list of accomplishments.

The 6-0 win over Irmo on April 20 was the team’s fourth consecutive shutout and 12th on the season.

The Lady Wildcats close the regular season tonight at Blythewood. They finished region play Tuesday against White Knoll seeking its 21 straight region victory dating back to May 1, 2014.

“It’s a new experience for me, a new experience for (the players),” said head coach Chris Fryland about the high rankings.

“But every day in practice we try to push them. We set three goals this year.

“One was to win the Viking Cup. We did that.

“One was to win the region. We’ve done that.

“The third and final goal is to compete and try to win a state championship.

So that’s how we try keep them motivated and we’re 2/3 of the way there.”

The Lady Wildcats have outscored their last four opponents 17-0 and have allowed just 11 goals. Both sophomores Megan Classer (25) and fellow sophomore Brooke Power (15) have more points individually than Lexington’s opposition.

The only negative for Lexington entering the post-season is losing senior All-Region and Clash of the Carolina selection Maggie Goodman. She suffered a torn ACL in last Friday’s win over River Bluff. The injury has Fryland juggling his approach to close the season.

“I go back and forth with that,” he said. “You don’t want players to get hurt but at the same time, you want to keep them sharp.

“We’ll play with different formations and different

people in different spots.

But we’ve got to keep the starters in for a little bit, keep them fresh, but get the younger players some playing time. So we’ll do a little bit of both.”

Gators suffer first loss Last Saturday’s boys’ soccer matched nationallyranked foes Wando against the River Bluff High Gators.

It was an anticipated affair for Palmetto State soccer fans.

For the second time in three trips, Wando had its way in “The Swamp”.

Wando’s 3-1 victory handed the Gators its first loss of the season and first since last year’s Class 4A Lower State final.

Afterwards, River Bluff (18-1) head coach Phil Savitz said both teams have wrapped up their respective region titles. This made the regular-season clash less intense than it would be in the post-season.

Based on the brackets, a matchup could take place in the third round once again in “The Swamp”.

River Bluff finished the regular season Tuesday at Irmo.

This marked the second “Homecoming” to the school where Savitz coached for 33 years and won 14 state titles. The weight room is also named in his honor.

The President we never had

The presidential primary season is almost over and it’s been a remarkable one.

Some 50 years ago, one presidential hopeful stood out from the pack. She was like no other candidate before or since because … she didn’t exist!

Meet Yetta Bronstein, the president we never had.

To understand this unorthodox candidate, you must first understand the genius who created her.

Alan Abel is a professional prankster who made a career of pulling fast ones on gullible news reporters who value sensational stories above journalistic standards; such as checking to see if the story is real.

Abel has a gift for producing press releases so skillfully written they make the preposterous sound plausible. He began by creating a (totally fake) organization called the Society for Indecency to Naked Animals whose mission was to put clothes on buck naked beasts. Its slogan was “A nude horse is a rude horse.” Reporters fell for it, and covered it as a real story.

Emboldened by that success, Abel and his co-conspirator and wife Jeanne set their sights on a bigger target: the 1964 presidential election. They cooked up Yetta Bronstein, a Bronx Jewish mother who had never held a job.

She needed a political party, so the Abels gave her the Best Party, whose slogan asked “Why not?”

Yetta’s platform was bold.

She wanted to: • replace taxes with national Bingo to finance the federal government • take Congress off salary for straight commission • allow gun ownership but cut bullet velocity 95% • put truth serum in all Senate drinking fountains She also had catchy slogans. “Vote for Yetta and things will get betta,” “A mink coat in every closet” and “If you want simple solutions, then you gotta be simple yourself.”

The Abels even designed a campaign poster. Problem: Jeanne, a 20-something blonde, agreed to play Yetta, but looked nothing like the image they had crafted. So they used a photo of Alan’s real-life Jewish mother.

The Abels cranked out campaign press releases, and interview requests

soon poured in. Reporters took those releases at face value and didn’t bother to check whether the Best Party or Yetta Bronstein existed.

Even the esteemed New York Times fell for the hoax. Its article quoted Yetta as saying, “I figure we need a Jewish mother in the White House. A mother will take care of things. Maybe our country could use a queen, you know? It certainly wouldn’t do any harm.”

The funniest moment came when Yetta sent a letter to the very real Lyndon Johnson as he prepared to attend the very real Democratic Party’s national convention in Atlantic City, offering to become his running mate.

She wrote: “Maybe I’ll see you on the beach in Atlantic City. That’s my home stomping grounds and I’ll be happy to show you around. I can also get many things there for you wholesale.”

Election Day arrived and LBJ won in a landslide.

Still, several thousand people went to the polls and actually voted for a fictional character. The Abels later produced a book about the experience alled “The President I Almost Was.” Yetta Bronstein isn’t a candidate for president this year, and that’s a shame.

Because the Best Party’s slogan resonates louder today than it did in 1964: “Why Not?” Please run one more time, Yetta. America needs you – now, more than ever.
