Does technology intimidate you?

I’ll tell you a not-so-little secret.

I’m intimidated, too. At least sometimes.

Anything can be intimidating when you aren’t used to how it works.

The difference is that I’ve learned that technology is pretty darn durable.

I know. It seems like your brand new Ipad seems to go bonkers each time you touch it. Or that new cell phone has a ton of buttons.

But what if I told you I’ve had the same Android phone almost two years.

It has been dropped so many times that if anytime I barely hit it too hard it will restart. The camera lens is cracked but it still takes great pictures.

How is it still working?

Well, other than being

It has a protective case on it so that it doesn’t take a direct hit from a fall.

I lock my phone. Not just anyone can pick it up and use it.

I’m talking to the sixyear-old monkey who thinks Mommy should have every game she’s ever loved on the phone.

How about my desktop computer that I’ve had more than five years.

It still works great. I run scans on a regular basis and I do general cleanup of programs that I don’t use

anymore.

What is the lesson here?

Go for it! Use that new technology.

Be the kid in the candy store for the next two hours while you figure out how to dial on that new phone.

I know I do. Each new piece of technology I receive, I make sure to read the instructions though once.

Not cool, but very true.

Make sure you know everything about it and then proceed to push each button just to see what it’ll do. It is the only way to learn.

Can you break stuff? Of

course you can.

But what is worse? Having something new and exciting and being too afraid to use it? Or having that cool new toy make a weird sound that you have to run to a “youngster” to fix?

My youngster isn’t even me. It’s Google.

Anytime I’m stuck, I rely on message boards I find by searching my problem on Google. I know that I am not the first person to have the problem so someone, somewhere will have already asked my question and gotten an answer that works.

I will then use that answer to fix my own problem.

Let me leave you with this. When she died almost two years ago, my 83 year old grandmother had three laptops, a desktop and a smartphone.

I was constantly amazed that she taught herself to use them and only called me when she really messed it up. That is awesome.

Lake Murray: Largemouth bass: Slow. Bass are actually still pretty tough. You can’t just run the banks and throw your favorite lure, as people want to do in the spring. Big limits are coming soon with sight-fishing for spawning fish or following the spawning herring off points, especially early.

It’s a Dog’s Life Perceptions In my sociology class, we were instructed to write down answers to some questions the teacher was asking.

“Next question,” announced the instructor.

“How would you like to be seen by the opposite sex?”

I was thinking about my answer when the young woman next to me turned and asked, “How do you spell ‘intellectual?”

Intermission The symphony is playing Beethoven’s Ninth. During a long break, the bass players decide to slip out to the local pub and have a few drinks.

Suddenly one realizes they have been gone for a while and says “We’ve got to get back.”

Another says, “Relax, we’ve got plenty of time.

I tied a string around the conductor’s score and he’ll have a time getting it squared away.”

As they come back into the concert hall, a patron in the audience notices the confusion by the conductor and says, “Something seems wrong up there.”

Her date says, “What do you expect? It’s the bottom of the Ninth, the score is tied and the bassists are loaded.”

Stupid Question A young new teacher was trying to prove to her students that they could do the math problems she was presenting that day.

She said, “Anyone who thinks they are stupid, please stand up.”

No one stood up. After a while, a student stood up.

She asked him, “Do you think you are stupid?”

He replied, “No, but I don’t want you to stand up there all by yourself.”

“Hey there,” he said to the men. “Can you tell me what’s going on here with this digging?”

“We work for the county government,” one of the men said.

“But one of you is digging a hole and the other is filling it up. Isn’t that a waste of the county’s money?”

“Well,” one of the men replied, “normally there’s three of us — me, Rodney, and Mike. I dig the hole, Rodney sticks in the tree, and Mike here puts the dirt back.”

“Yeah,” Mike added. “Just because Rodney’s sick, that don’t mean we can’t work, does it?”

Shakers flee England for faith, freedom MacLeod and Jerry Bellune are spending their children’s inheritance and enjoying every minute of it. What follows is an account of their travels in New England.

Sabbathday Lake, Maine

Brother Arnold and his two sisters, both 30s years older than he, may be the last of the Shakers.

Yet they will leave a legacy of Christian faith and a simpler way of life.

You feel a sense of peace in the air here. It is so quietly intense and palpable it is almost as if you can reach out and touch it.

As we walked around the small Shaker community museum and gift shop here, we admired the furniture they have made.

It is simple yet elegant with clear lines and beautifully finished wood.

It has been planned with an artist’s eye, assembled and sanded with calloused fingers and loving care, respecting the wood and the generations who will use it.

We resisted the temptation to buy anything. It seemed to belong here, not in our busy world.

A celibate life

We thumbed through a Shaker cookbook.

The ingredients were right out of the field or the pantry, nothing fancy or artificial, plain and healthy like the people who followed the recipes handed down through genera-

tions.

The three remaining Believers, like those of this curious sect before them, are celibate as they believe Jesus was in his time.

Nothing is passed down mother to daughter or father to son. The Shakers have no children, just a faith that once attracted others to join them.

They did not recruit and, in the fast-paced 21st Century, they appear to have no converts to carry on the faith when they are gone.

They came to this country to escape persecution in England. Even the devout can endure just so much.

After repeated harassment and jailings, Mother Ann Lee decided America offered the hope of religious tolerance and freedom from persecution.

Escape to America

In 1774, two years before American colonists signed the Declaration of Independence, Mother Ann Lee and eight followers boarded The Mariah in Liverpool and sailed for New York City. They then journeyed up the Hudson River and cleared land for their first settlement.

On May 19, 1780, the famous “Dark Day,” smoke from forest fires, thick fog and cloud cover so darkened the sky that candles were required from noon on and did not disperse until the next night.

Children and chaperones visit the Shaker community at Sabbath day Lake in Maine. Only three Shaker Believers have survived the 20th Century.

People thought the Second Coming might be near. This brought converts — and persecution.

Despite America’s record of religious tolerance, the Shakers were harassed, beaten, stoned, driven out and imprisoned. This bitter persecution brought about the early deaths of the three English leaders, Father William, Mother Ann and Father James.

By 1787, the Shakers were led by converts Father Joseph Meacham and Mother Lucy Wright.

The Shakers established 18 communities in Maine and other New England states, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Georgia and Florida of about 5,000 souls.

The Sabbathday Lake Shaker Community was founded in 1783, in what was then called Thompson’s Pond Plantation, by Shaker missionaries.

In less than a year almost 200 converts lived here, raising a Meeting House as their first united venture.

Always referred to as

“the least of Mother’s children in the east,” Sabbathday Lake was one of the smallest, poorest eastern Shaker communities.

For decades they struggled to pay off debts piled up by dishonest business agents. Their struggle produced strong spiritual faith to see Believers through the most difficult times.

Today Sabbathday Lake is the only active Shaker community. The three of them live a life of work and worship, fulfilling the motto of founder, Mother

Ann Lee, to “put our hands to work and hearts to God.” The community contains 18 buildings on 1,800 acres of land including a tree farm, apple orchard, vegetable gardens, commercial herb garden, hay fields, pastures, a flock of sheep and other livestock.

Most of this falls to Brother Arnold Hadd, now in his 50s. When he is no longer able to do the strenuous work, who will take it up for him?
