Who the heck is this Mailer-Daemon?

A lovely lady wrote the other day with a problem that drives some people crazy.

A Mailer-Daemon was using her email address without her consent.

What is a MailerDaemon? And why do you get them?

Have you ever sent an email to the wrong email address?

Chances are it bounced back saying the email address isn’t valid.

This email that bounces back is usually titled Mailer-Daemon.

It is the server’s way of telling you that the email address is bad.

Beware of spammers The issue we were facing is upwards of 50 Mailer-Daemon emails coming into the email’s inbox even though no emails are going out. This is because spammers are using your email address instead of their own. Possibly their email address has been black-listed, or rated bad, so they are using your good email address to send their spam.

Generally, there is little you can do to stop this happening.

How you handle it depends on how they send it.

What to do If the Mailer-Daemon’s information “From” email _ and address is not yours, then unfortunately they are just using your email address and have not hacked your account.

There’s not much that you can really do except delete the messages or change your email address.

If the “From” address is yours, then chances are they have the password to your email address.

If your account has been hacked or you just can’t tell how they are sending the emails, a spammer has gained entry to your account.

Either they have:

• Gained your password via malware on your computer.

Change the password to your email account and run anti-malware on your computer to clean it of any problems.

FISHING REPORT LAKE MURRAY: Striped bass: Good. It’s a special time to go fishing on Lake Murray, and instead of one or two species biting well right now you can find a good bite for pretty much whatever you want to target. For anglers who enjoy catching more than one species, the hardest part of the day may be deciding what to fish for! Lake World (803-957-6548) reports that the striped bass bite is already good and getting better, and free-lines, corks pulled behind the boat (to keep the bait a certain depth) and planer boards (to get the bait away from the boat) are all catching fish. A couple of weeks ago they suspected, but it was un-

confirmed, that cut bait was catching some of the bigger fish being caught, but now there is no doubt about it. The cut bait bite is definitely coming on strong.

About the only pattern that isn’t catching a substantial number of fish is down-lining.

Fish are still highly scattered, and they can be found over much of the lake. Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that he is also fishing free-lines and planer boards, and both live herring as well as shad are catching fish. He concurs that action will be found all around the lake, but he is finding that most of the fish will to some extent be related to a creek system (even if they are at the mouth of it). A lot of fish are also being caught under the birds using bucktails, spoons and flukes. Look for more and more fish to be related to points, too, as the bait continues to stage around points and then the herring (and shad) begin their annual spawn.

RAVELIN’ WITH THE CHRONICLE

The Silent Wings Museum in Lubbock, Tex., displays the gliders that during World

War II pilots flew behind enemy lines to take our troops where they could surprise the enemy and take and hold of strategic locations in France and Germany.

What reason do you have for traveling?

MacLeod and Jerry Bellune are spending their children’s inheritance traveling the country and enjoying every minute. Here is an account of their travels from South Carolina to the Southwest and back, a 4,736-mile trip through 11 states.

When we travel abroad, there are always a minimum of two problems: 1. The airlines.

They are poorly operated as people-carriers.

If they would get smart, as railroads did, and tell the rest of us where to go — that they only want to transport freight, which does not stand in security lines and gripe when the tepid water they serve you is lukewarm — they might be even more profitable.

2. Customs officials.

Most of them had mothers who dropped them on their heads as infants and now permanently resent all visitors to their countries.

A few seem to have slipped unnoticed past governmental human re-

source wizards and brought a sense of humor along to an airport terminal.

These folks are a blessing to the human race.

Reason, you say?

The fantasy writer Ray Bradbury — author of such classics as The Illustrated Man, Fahrenheit 451 and The Martian Chronicles — reported an encounter with an Irish customs official who still had a sense of the ridiculous in Belfast.

“What is the reason for your being in Ireland, sir?¨ the polite official asked.

“Reason has nothing to do with it,” Bradbury said.

“Well, then, you’ve come to the right country,” the man said. “Being unreasonable is an Irish specialty.”

“Then I will simply study the Irish,” Bradbury said.

“Good luck,” the official said. “Even God has gone blind doing that.”

We felt fortunate to be traveling across the fruited plain where you can cross borders and encounter no

one more intimidating than the folks at the state welcome centers or local museums and attractions.

Some will even go out of their way to be helpful if they aren’t busy talking with another employee about what they watched on TV last night.

Such was the case at the Silent Wings Museum here in Lubbock. Although it was advertised as a selfguided tour, volunteer Tom Nivens, a spry 94, and with 20 years U.S. Army service behind him, offered to show us around.

We were apparently the only visitors in the museum and Tom clearly enjoyed talking about the World War II days when gliders could land troops behind enemy lines. Their mission was to disrupt Axis forces and take and hold bridges and other strategic points.

Heroes in the war

During the war, 6,000 young Americans volunteered to fly large unarmed gliders into battle.

They would fly into combat tethered to a tow

plane, cut lose and land.

The troops they carried would scramble out and head for the enemy.

The pilots, often with help from French partisans, would make their way back to England to fly another glider mission.

For these glider pilots every mission was do-or-die.

It was their commitment to repeatedly risk their lives landing the men and tools of war deep within enemy-held territory, often in complete darkness.

Thousands of lives were saved and battles won because of their efforts.

One of those glider pilots that landed in France was the late Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina.

Thurmond, at age 40, was serving as a judge in South Carolina at the time the U.S. entered the war.

Thurmond resigned from the bench to join the U.S. Army, rising in rank swiftly to lieutenant colonel.

As part of the 82nd Airborne Division, he and his men landed behind the German lines during the D-Day invasion, one of the

costliest battles in loss of life in modern warfare.

Thurmond’s men captured a German unit and turned them over to intelligence officials. They spent the next three months in the Allied drive to Paris.

For his military service, he received 18 decorations, medals and awards, including the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star for Valor, Purple Heart, Belgium’s Order of the Crown and France’s Croix de Guerre.

One pilot said the ‘G’ in their emblem didn’t stand for glider but for guts.

The museum’s origins

In 1971, possibly while some of us were still running about in rompers, former Army glider pilots organized the National World War II Glider Pilots Association to preserve the history of their contributions to the war effort.

They aimed to find and restore a WACO CG-4A glider for public display.

Several Texas glider pilots learned about one of these gliders atop a tire store in Fresno, Ca.

After the war the glider was sold as military surplus and placed on the building to attract attention to the store below it.

The pilots raised money to buy and restore it in time for their 1979 national reunion in Dallas. After the reunion, they started looking for a museum.

Betrayed and left for dead in the frozen wilderness, Glass goes on the most brutal hike anyone’s ever taken, hell-bent on survival and revenge against his backstabbing buddy (Tom Hardy).

“The Lady in the Van” (PG-13) -- The woman in the van is a fixture in the neighborhood.

She’s well-read and perceptive with a dry wit, but also cantankerous and positively smelly.

Miss Shepherd (Maggie Smith) is a tolerated presence in her London neighborhood, where she lives in her van and parks in a different spot every few weeks. She is allowed to pull into the driveway of playwright Alan Bennett (Alex Jennings) for a short stay, which turns out to be about 15 years.

It’s based on a true story and written by the man it happened to. On-screen, Bennet’s character is split in two (both played by Jennings), one version of himself does the writing, the other is more observant of the outside world.

With this little device, the writer of the movie is able to talk to himself, suss out any funny observations and work through inner-conflicts.

Smith is up to her usual tricks, but brings a certain edge to this wounded character that makes her stand out from other prickly misfits.

“Norm of the North” (PG) -- The human imagination is limitless. The mind of a child, innocent of the norms and structures of our grownup reality, can comprehend so much and find wonder in things strange and familiar. This movie doesn’t tap into any of that. It’s a forgettable animated feature where Rob Schneider voices a polar bear that goes to New York to

Antimicrobial silver essential for proper wine decanting This somewhat rare, early 19th century coin silver wine decanting funnel was made in Charleston by a well-known silversmith.

A close examination of this small piece reveals a pattern of construction that can be observed only when the surface is tarnished or very cold. It is nearly magical to pick up a piece made in this manner after it has not been used for a while. What the surface reveals is so much more interesting than reading a series of marks – something that can be easily accomplished.

Look closely and you will see the seam that runs from the small tapered end to the large opening where spirits would be poured. There is another seam where the tapered spout is attached and reinforced at the awkward angle required for proper operation. Each of the openings has a thinly rolled edge of silver. This was necessary to prevent drips. This rolled edge is gathered from the original construction material with an added interior ring of silver used to reinforce the circular form.

An even more interesting aspect is the indented line up the back that aids is balancing the funnel on the opening of the bottle used in decanting.

There is also a small silver ring on the back upper portion which allows the funnel

to be hung around the neck or stored with air drying in mind. As you observe the ring, you will see a reinforced area added to the surface under the ring, preventing possible damage.

An object such as this was an indispensable tool of the 18th and 19th century home. The antimicrobial properties of silver also assured the user of cleanliness, which was hard to come by, yet essential, in the decanting process.

Throughout Devontae Shuler’s junior year at Oak Hill Academy, prayer served him well.

It granted the former Irmo High School All-State guard the strength and patience to blend his talents seamlessly with a group of equally if not superior skilled players.

The end result was another dominating season for the national basketball power.

Last weekend at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Shuler turned to prayer as the Warriors battled La Lumiere of Indiana for the Dick’s High School National Championship. Oak Hill trailed as many as 18 points in the third quarter and could suffer a fifth loss in the national final.

Shuler’s prayers were once again answered.

The Warriors rallied to defeat La Lumiere in dramatic fashion.

With the score tied in overtime, Khadim Sy tipped in a previous tip that fell short as time expired.

Shuler and his teammates stormed the floor to celebrate the 62-60 win. The victory wrapped up a 45-1 season for the Warriors.

Shuler has watched the final play a “couple of times”. While a national championship was a “dream”, he credited following head coach Steve Smith’s mantra of

hard work and unselfish play.

It was quite a contrast for the former Lexington Chronicle Player of the Year after leading the Yellow Jackets to the Region 5-4A title.

He averaged five assists and 13 points a game, nearly half of what he averaged as a sophomore at Irmo.

Unlike at Irmo, Shuler also believed he did not have to carry the Oak Hill Warriors.

Shuler was not surprised by his former teammates’ success given their talent and having a “great coach” in Tim Whipple.

Shuler will return to his AAU team in Charlotte, N.C., this summer. His list of colleges still showing high interest are Louisville, North Carolina, N.C. State, Kentucky and Georgetown, South Carolina and Clemson While Shuler would love to win another national title in Virginia, he did not completely close the door on a return to Irmo High his senior year.

A decision is expected at the end of the summer.

Asked what will play a role in the choice, he simply said “my surroundings”.

Based on personal history, prayer will also continue to guide him.

Real men and women wear kilts

Out of the pages of the bestselling Harry Potter novels, Quidditch has captured the imaginations of young people.

Tartan Day South founder John Banks is proud of his Scots’ heritage. He will show it when he dons his tartan kilt for the 6th annual event at the Historic Columbia Speedway in Cayce Saturday.

In an interview with Chronicle Editor Emeritus Jerry Bellune, he draws back the curtain to reveal what it takes to run an event that attracted more than 10,600 people last year. This year’s event featured something highly novel, a Quidditch match straight out of the pages of the bestselling Harry Potter books.

Q. Where did you come up with the Harry Potter idea?

A. I saw Quidditch played in a movie (“Interns”) and brought it up to a college-

age friend. He told me there was a team at USC and it was big with college kids.

Harry Potter has touched a few generations and we thought it would bridge our festival to an even wider audience.

We are always looking to add unique exhibitions we can tie back to the British Isle’s to our games. This is a sports that inspires wonderment and hustle from it’s origin.

Q. For non-Potter fans, how is Quidditch played? Do you have flying broomsticks like they did in the Potter movies?

A. Its is a ball sport where teams try to score by throwing balls through raised hoops. In the Harry Potter books and movies, they fly on their broomsticks. In non-fiction Quidditch the players run with

a broomstick between their legs.

You are just going to have to come out and check it out yourself on Saturday, April 2. The exhibition will be played on the main athletic field around 12:20 after the big Mid-Day Ceremony.

Q. What first interested you in staging a Scots’ event such as Tartan Days South?

A. I visited the Stone Mountain Highland Games over 20 years ago and enjoyed the opportunity to dive into another culture like a big Scottish area at Epcot.

I knew when we first created the Historic Columbia Speedway into an events ground, that Highland Games would be a natural fit. We have been sure to bridge into all the Celtic cultures. We are always open to new ideas to add to the fun.

We believe the key for our patrons is to have hours of fun and enjoyment. Take their minds away from South Carolina for a little while and research the family genealogy, watch the dogs herd sheep and have a taste of Haggis if you like.

There is so much more to see. We will have a world renowned genealogist from Scotland, Dr. Bruce Durie, doing two talks on Saturday. Get seated early for those.

He is fascinating and has great tips for tracing your family history.

Q. How has Tartan Days South grown over the years?

A. We have been blessed with the community jumping on board in so many ways. Edventure Children’s Museum will be out this year providing more fun stuff for the kids. We have grown substantially each year. Last year, in only our 5th year we drew more than 10,600 from 24 states.

We always work hard to add exhibitions and content. I do not want our patrons to see the same show each year. We are just starting to see what we can do. There are big plans brewing for the next 10 years.

Q. What are you thinking about to grow attendance at next year’s games?

A. We will have to keep some of that under hat for now. We do know that one of our biggest hit bands will be returning from Scotland “Soar Patrol”. We are really growing and spreading into the nine acre infield. The events may start to stretch into earlier in the week.

We want to keep our out-of-state visitors in town as long as possible, staying in our hotels and eating in our restaurants.
