Why do computer parts matter?

So why do the parts to your computer matter in how well your computer runs? We’ll start with one of the smallest parts of the entire computer, but it is one of the most important, your processor.

Your processor is the little engine of your computer. It determines what all can run. A “single core processor” means that the computer is good at doing one task at a time. Think about yourself, you are really good at doing one thing, watching TV, at a time. The moment you start adding in something like reading a book while you watch TV, your focus is split and you don’t retain either very well. With a single core processor the same is true, it can run two things at once however the speed will be slow on both programs. A “dual core processor” can handle double

what the single core can.

So, it can watch TV and read at the same time.

Then we skip to a “quad core processor”, these little machines can run up to four programs simultaneously seemingly without issue.

Your processor also has a speed attached. It is how fast that little machine can work. The higher the speeds the better it is. It can work faster and won’t over heat.

The next part that can determine how your computer runs is your memory.

In the computer world it is referred to as RAM. There are so many different types

of RAM we could spend months talking about it. Essentially your memory is how much your computer can remember at this moment. Imagine, the memory of your computer is like your short-term memory.

How much can it hold for the next few minutes or hours before it just can’t handle any more. The bigger the memory the better it will be at running programs and remembering what it needs to do.

On to your hard drive.

This is probably the part that most people know about when it comes to the inner parts of their computer. You will know it is like a

little memory compartment because it holds all your documents, videos, images, etc. If the RAM is the short term memory, then the hard drive is the long term memory. It holds the important things for as long as we need to hold onto it.

Obviously when it comes to your hard drive it is nice to have the biggest hard drive in order to not run out of room for all those pictures of the kids, grandkids, and Fido. For a typical consumer a picture from their camera is 1-2MB in size (that MB stands for megabytes).

That means that the biggest hard drive on the market, which is a 3TB (tera-

byte), will hold approximately 2,500,000 photos.

Two million photos! I think that is a bit over kill, but who am I to say that you don’t have two million photos you need to collect into one convenient spot!

FISHING REPORT Lake Murray: Crappie: Good. Captain Brad Taylor reports that the best crappie bite is coming in the main channel of the Little River, tight-lining curly tail jigs in about 6-10 feet of water. Occasional pre-spawn fish are being caught this way, but most of the fish are post-spawn. There is not a significant bite throwing minnows (or jigs) at shallow cover. Down the lake there may be more pre-spawn fish than at the upper end, but 6-10 feet still seems to be a key depth range.

Striped bass: Good. Lake World reports that striper are being caught shallow on planer boards and free-lines.

The best advice is to follow the contours of the banks to pull baits, with the best action from the Gap down to the dam. There is also significant schooling activity, with most schooling activity taking place out in open water. The cut bait bite is just starting to come on, and cut herring fished off points in 3-25 feet of water will catch more and more fish as the spring progresses. At the same time birds are becoming less important as the flocks thin out, and on recent trips the striper schools guides have targeted have not had birds around them.

White Perch: Fair. Lake World reports that the white perch bite has slowed substantially, and far less anglers are targeting them than a week or two ago. Perch seem to have gone deep, and anglers should use electronics to locate them. The fish will take spoons, minnows, or worms when located, with most anglers fishing for them vertically.

Last year I had an injury and my 16-year-old son ran in my place. We didn’t tell him the team name was “The Muddy Mothers.”

Q. How are you preparing for what many consider an ordeal?

A. Rachel: As a trainer and co-owner with Mary Clare of CenterFit in Lexington, I train hard five days a week. I do high intensity interval style cross training and Pilates classes and I’m trying to get a few 3-4 mile runs in each week to prepare.

Q. What is your real purpose in this?

A. Hali: My favorite saying is: You only live once. I like to do as much as I can and more because there may come a time when thinking about things is all I can do and I don’t want to say I wish I would have . . .

Robin: To motivate myself to take care of my body, to prove to myself I can still do this and because it’s actually fun.

Mary Clare: Because I can. I figure when I get a little older, maybe I’ll have to sign up for different sorts of things. I will.

Rachel: It’s fun and I want to support Hali in her goal

of doing the Mud Run. Q. How are you motivating yourself?

A. Mary Clare: I am good with motivation. Either I am fairly motivated already or the need to get outside and release some energy is met by teaching middle school. I might have a moment when the water gets over my head and it looks like a snake ought to be on there with me . . .

Rachel: I don’t want to let my teammates down. That keeps me motivated.

Robin: By reminding myself that I have a team counting on me to do my best.

Q. What do you hope the result will be?

A. Rachel: We’re just running the race to com-

plete the course and have some great laughs while we do it. I believe we will be having the most fun out there!

Robin: I hope we all finish without injuries beyond some scrapes and bruises and I hope I keep up and don’t drag us down.

Mary Clare: I hope we will do all the obstacles. We are a tough little group but we won’t have a tall person on our team. That comes in handy. There might be some shoulder standing going on.

Hali: If I am unable to complete it, I will know that at least I tried.

When the driver of a huge trailer lost control of his rig, he plowed into an empty toll booth and smashed it to pieces. He climbed down from the wreckage and within a matter of minutes, a truck pulled up and discharged a crew of workers.

The men picked up each broken piece of the former tollbooth and spread some kind of creamy substance on it. Then they began fitting the pieces together. In less than a half hour, they had the entire tollbooth reconstructed and looking good as new.
