PICKS OF THE WEEK Get Out (R) — Psychological horror has finally caught up with modern psychology thanks to the debut of director Jordan Peele.

This pitch-perfect addition to horror cannon follows Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), a young black man traveling into the manicured suburbs to meet the parents of his adoring white girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams).

Rose’s parents (Catherine Keener and Bradley Whitford) are smiling upper-middle class liberals, who are just so pleased to welcome Chris with awkward attempts at slang. In a slow build, Chris uncovers the horror just beneath this smooth, milk-white exterior.

Peele is perhaps better known as half of the TV sketch-comedy duo Key & Peele. Social commentary is woven into a lot of what he’s done in the past, but the execution of this feature film — and the depth of knowledge it shows about horror — is more what you’d expect from a veteran director.

Logan (R) — Wolverine, the blade-brandishing X-Men poster boy played by Hugh Jackman, is one of the last mutants alive in a bleak-yet-plausible version of the near future.

The once-unstoppable slashing machine is starting to feel the years — he’s not healing like he used to, and he has nobody left but Caliban (Stephen Merchant) and Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), who’s losing his mind and control of his terrifying psychic powers.

This is the only good Wolverine-centric flick in the XMen canon.

Really good, not just relatively good.

I was never that psyched about Jackman’s Wolverine, but here stands a convert: Jackman plays Logan with such commitment that you believe he’s limping under the weight of five lifetimes of trouble, ready to sign his last page.

The R-rating also puts real fight into a character who has always felt a little declawed.

The Great Wall (PG-13) —

Craven, big-budget, global box-office dreams smashed up against this film like clamoring barbarians trying to topple a dynasty.

Alas, “The Great Wall” — a fantasy epic produced with Chinese and American collaboration — repelled those dreams with a monolithic and underwhelming structure.

Western mercenaries (Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal) join a legion of elite Chinese warriors (including Tian Jing and Hanyu Zhang) defending a great wall from waves of CG pitbull-lizard monsters. For the sake of international appeal, characters, themes and conflicts are stripped down to bare essentials.

zling visuals is on display, but doesn’t achieve the same sense of wonder as before.

My Life as a Zucchini

(PG-13) — This whimsically animated film of French origin deals with heavy topics, believably filtered through the lighter lens of kids.

Zucchini (Erick Abbate)

is a boy of 10 when he loses his abusive, alcoholic mother and lands in a group home for children with deceased and/or unfit parents.

The kids bond over their shared struggles with individual trauma. It’s an engaging movie that shouldn’t be dismissed as kid stuff because of its visuals.

It’s a Dog’s Life Upsetting the wagon

A farm boy accidentally overturned his wagonload of wheat on the road.

The farmer that lived nearby came to investigate.

“Hey, son,” he called out, “forget your troubles for a while and come and have dinner with us. Then I’ll help you overturn the wagon.”

“That’s very nice of you,” Willis answered, “but I don’t think Dad would like me to.”

“Aw, come on, son!” the farmer insisted.

“Well, OK,” the boy finally agreed, “but Dad won’t like it.”

After a hearty dinner, the boy thanked the host.

“I feel a lot better now, but I know Dad’s going to be real upset.”

“Don’t be silly!” said the neighbor. “By the way, where is he?”

“Under the wagon,” replied the boy.

A young man wanted to get his beautiful wife something nice for their first wedding anniversary. So he decided to buy her a cell phone.

She was very excited, and loved her new phone.

He showed it to her and explained to her all the features on the phone.

The next day, she went shopping.

Her phone rang and it was her husband.

“Hi, honey,” he said.

“How do you like your new phone?”

She replied “I just love it, it’s so small and your voice is clear as a bell but there’s one thing I don’t understand.”

“What’s that, baby?” asked the husband.

“How did you know I was at K-Mart?”

Questionable description

A man in a bar has a couple of beers, and the bartender tells him he owes $4.00.

“But I paid, don’t you remember?” says the customer.

“Okay,” says the bartender, “If you said you paid, you did.”

The man then goes outside and tells the first person he sees that the bartender can’t keep track of whether his customers have paid.

The second man then rushes in, orders a beer and later pulls the same stunt.

The barkeep replies, “If you say you paid, I’ll take your word for it.”

She replied, “Just because I reported him missing doesn’t mean I want him back!”

Trailing in their match at River Bluff High School 3-2 on March 21, Vihar Dilal knew he had to win his match to give Irmo a chance.

After dropping his first set, the number five singles player for the Yellow Jackets used his senior experience and fought back to win his match, knotting the score at 3-3.

From there, it was up to Irmo’s number-one doubles team of Sean Nguyen and Andy Reed.

"By this time, the crowd had grown quite a bit,” said Irmo head coach Mark DiMaggio, who is in his first season with the team. "After every point, the place was going crazy. It was a heck of an atmosphere.”

After splitting the first two sets, the match came down to a tiebreak where Irmo clinched the victory 10-8.

The win improved the Yellow Jackets to 6-0 on the season, and proved to be the turning point of the year.

"That was really the match our guys looked at and said, ‘Okay, we could have something pretty special here,’” DiMaggio said.

And they did. Irmo ran the table in the regular season, finishing a perfect 15-0 and 12-0 in region play.

The Yellow Jackets earned a one seed in the lower state portion of the Class 5A playoffs. They won their first two rounds 6-0 over Ashley Ridge and West Ashley, but lost in the third round 4-1 to Socastee on May 4.

"The past few years we just haven’t been able to put guys in the right position to succeed,” senior captain Greg Rast said.

"This season has been totally different under coach (DiMaggio). He has been able to plug guys in where they fit best and it has made a huge difference.”

Irmo hopes to make it back to the state championship, a place they have not been in eight years.

"It would mean so much to have the opportunity to play for a state championship,” Rast said. "I remember watching my brother play on that 2009 team that made it there.

“If we stick to our game plan, I think we’ve got a good chance to represent Irmo.”

Physician recalls wonders of childhod at Lake Murray

Lake Murray’s summer season opened unofficially Monday evening.

The Dutch Fork Historical Society welcomed Dr. Robert Seigler to its monthly meeting at Chapin Library.

Waterskiing, boating, fishing, swimming, and diving are all Lake Murray activities representing Seigler’s boyhood.

In 2005, his efforts resulted in the recovery of the Lake Murray B-25.

Seigler, a pediatric interventionist at Greenville Memorial Hospital for more than three decades, spent the summers of his youth on Lake Murray.

“I love Lake Murray,” he told members of the histori-

cal society. “I still keep a boat at Dreher Island State Park.”

He recalled that when he’d come off the lake after an afternoon of waterskiing, he frequently soaked up the familiar tales of WWII aircraft resting at the bottom of the lake, ditched during routine training mishaps.

“Once I finished medical school and was settled in my practice,” he said, “I began to think about how to find out if any planes were really still down there.”

Seigler returned to Coy Bayne’s “Lake Murray: Legend and Leisure” to refresh his memory on details.

Next, he hired a law student to search area periodicals for accounts of crashes of planes flying out of Co-

lumbia Army Air Base.

(Note: this research pre-dated Google.)

Advancements in sonar technology and support from a Navy dive team willing to search as a training exercise moved the search along.

Help also came from eye witnesses.

“Katherine Townsend (Tapp) had been walking along the shoreline that April morning when the B-25 made a water landing,” Seigler recounted. “Decades later, from her sickbed, she was able to tell divers exactly where to look for the plane.”

“Their points of reference were what had been there before the lake waters covered everything; she told the divers the plane was ‘near the Little Red School House.’”

Seigler also got eye-witness information from Hank Mascall.

At that time of the search, Mascall was the only living member of the crew that had been aboard the ill-fated B-25 that April 1943 morning; he had been the navigator bombardier.

Seigler spoke with Mascall by phone at the retired lieu-

tenant’s home in Oregon.

The senior member of that B-25C crew passed away within a year of the plane’s recovery.

“Once we knew where the plane was, John Hodge joined the team to deal with the legal and regulatory matters, getting salvage rights from SCE&G which owns the lake. Bill Vartorella also joined us in public relations and fund raising.”

Seigler said knowing the plane’s location set off a decade of negotiations to find a museum that would take the plane and display it.

“That it be in the steward-

ship of a museum was one of SCE&G’s stipulations,” said Seigler, greatly relieved when Southern Museum of Flight in Birmingham, AL, said they would take it.

Turbulent weather from Hurricane Ophelia, pure physics of getting the silty lake floor to release the warbird, obstacles in getting lifting straps to do their job without breaking the fragile plane apart were only a few of the issues finally resolved, giving way to a successful recovery Sept. 19, 2005.

‘Tools of the trade’ could also be worn as beautiful ornaments

his lovely smooth piece of mother of pearl reacts to the light with a rainbow color play that reflects the shell it was carved from.

At the turn of the century, many pieces were made of Mother Nature’s Sea Treasures. You will find tiny hinged purses made of two shells, often ornamented with gold and jewels, made for ladies and men to carry. Carrying one would exemplify the taste and high social position of the owner. There are shells, once hinged by nature, then sealed by turn-of-the-century artists who crafted them into vessels for smelling salts or perfumes. Some were made into “posy holders,” which were worn on the lapel displaying one lovely bloom which, when worn by a man, was often given to the object of his affection.

The piece I am writing about today is made of American sterling and so marked. For those of you who collect or want to collect silver, the word “sterling” on an object indicates it was made in America or for the American market.

The mother of pearl was likely sourced from the chambered nautilus, as it is large enough to provide this tongue depressor size piece.

When mounted to the sterling end, it formed what was known as a “nanny whistle.” One shrill note on this Victorian tool would have gotten the attention of even the most errant little one. There are two rings on the side of the silver portion which would have allowed the piece to be hooked onto and worn on a chatelaine.

The motif is both interesting and beautiful. Set central is the clear image of a butterfly, its wings open in flight. The ideals of the Victorian period and its particular language tell of “new life,” indicated by the butterfly, “purity,” indicated by the white of the mother of pearl, and “cleanliness,” indicated by the use of silver — each component brought to us by Mother Nature.

Do it with an iPhone iPhones have a built in ability to store and sort images in your gallery.

Click on the gallery application icon, then click on the albums tab at the bottom. There you can organize those photos.

A plus sign at the top left corner will open a dialog box where you can name a new album. Hit save and it creates that album and allows you to add photos.

You can select multiple photos from the gallery and hit the Add To on the bottom bar. This will show all your current photo albums and let you create new ones.

Do it with an Android

Androids are a bit different.

The stock Gallery app does not let you create albums.

You’ll need an application like Google Photos to handle that.

Google Photos comes standard. If it doesn’t, it is free to download from the Play Store.

This will import all of your photos and even back them up to your Google Drive for storage.

With this application, you can sort photos into self-made albums.

Once you open the app, a menu is under three dots in the top right of the screen.

Click on album and you will be able to choose the photos you want and give the album a name.

There are still some other ways to catch fish, such as in pockets or on buzzbaits, but the shallow herring bite is pretty much wide open

Lake Murray water levels are at 358.14 (full pool is 360.00), and surface water temperatures have dropped from the low to mid-70s back into the mid-to upper 60s after the recent rains.

The lake is also significantly more stained.

There are still Lake Murray bass that are spawning on Lake Murray, particularly out on the main lake, but most bass fishermen are thinking about a different spawning species–blueback herring.

This week in my class at the Shepherd’s Center we discussed how to organize photos to make it easier on yourself.

On the catfish front, Captain Chris Simpson (864992-2352) reports that the bite is relatively unchanged and fish are still super scattered throughout the lake and across a wide range of depths.

People are catching fish anchored on humps as shallow as just a few feet, and catching them drifting as deep as 45 feet.

Herring and perch are working best but look for stinkbait to get better with the warming. Chris only rates the bite as “fair” right now.

3) The Black River Swamp Preserve is located near Andrews.

This slow-moving river is characterized by high concentrations of organic carbon, which accounts for the tea-colored water and gives rise to the diverse habitats in its widespread floodplain.

From its origins as the Fruzola, Jr. drink mix to its several current forms, SweeTarts has become one of the most iconic candies in America.

One candy’s messy secret: Baby Boomers helped create a classic

I

f you were a child in the 1960s or 70s, you likely feasted on a certain type of candy while watching a baseball game. Or walking home from school. Or after pulling it out of your Halloween treats pile.

Personally, I enjoyed its biting sugariness at the movie theater while taking in Saturday afternoon matinees.

Those little circles of sweetness MARK POWELL have stood the test of time and are still popular today.

Yet, you’ll be surprised to learn messy Baby Boomers played a big role in their creation. This is their story.

Kids and sweets have been a natural combination ever since the first child crawled out of a cave, dipped his finger in honey and

stuck it in his mouth.

In the 1940s, a Utah company developed something revolutionary.

It was a sweet and sour powdered drink mix that sold for a penny called Fruzola, Jr. You opened the packet and poured it into a glass or bottle. Kids were crazy about it.

One day, candy executive J. Fish Smith noticed something interesting: kids were skipping the liquid and eating the powder straight from the package.

A light bulb went off in Smith’s head. He tweaked the formula, made a few other changes, and rolled out Lik-m-Aid in 1952.

Kids liked the new version, but sales were nothing to brag about. Smith decided re-branding was in order.

The sweet and tangy powder was put into striped straws and marketed as Pixy Stix, hitting stores in 1959.

This time, it sold like gangbusters.
